Today, we explore 10 AI That Ruined Speedruns. In most of the clips, speedrunners were near the end of their run, when the AI performed something absurd. This ranges from bad RNG, to a glitch within the game's code. Although AI cannot know if you are in fact speedrunning, the things they are capable of when on a said speedrun, are pretty insane.

Hi everyone, this was my first attempt at creating speedrunning-related content! Feel free to leave any suggestions of what I can do better in the future! Also, feel free to mention any games below that can be made into a future list. This list is not limited to the 10 games featured.

EDIT: EZ and I are not the same person, lol. Also the "Scape" suffix comes from Old School Runescape when we made our TH-cam accounts back in 2014, 2015.

Developers dont care unless a new edition of the same game is coming out on a new console
Case in point, KH2 FM remaster on the ps3 had a lot bugs. It took Square Enix years until the bug are fixed, and thats only because the PS4 edition are coming out. Worst part is, they only fix the PS4 editions version and let the PS3 one riddle with bugs

Well, the vast majority of their customers won't even hit the bug, and if they do, they just shrug and reset the game. It's not a big deal since there's an easy workaround. It's more of an annoyance than a game breaker.
It's easy to get caught up in the speedrunner viewpoint and forget who the customers for most of these games are.
It's been 5 years and payday 2 still hasnt fixed the civilians calling the police out of bounds glitch

It’s not like he even got extremely mad. He just walked out. When people say rage quit you normally think of some kid getting super angry and pounding a table, not walking out without breaking anything
Funnily enough, a couple of months ago during a real-life Yugioh tournament a player using a Exodia deck managed to draw all five pieces on his starting hand (it was proven no cheating was involved). That left the literal entire playerbase around the globe astonished.
What I'm saying is that imagine just how damn unlikely is for that to happen that even seasoned veterans were impressed.
Lord Starscream, True leader of the Decepticons it was bound to happen eventually. The game has existed with Exodia as a playable card for over 20 years now.
What tournament? Was it just someone's locals or something more akin to a regional? Because no one is playing that crap at a YCS.
I thought that Exodia was banned from tournaments? Its been about a decade or so maybe I'm miss remembering.

I actually find them kinda relaxing.
Speedrunning is kinda braindead in general most of the funny reactions come after a dozen attempts or so when the runner gets an actually good pace going on

@@DINOSHREDDER Multiple dude. I've got a quad array of giggle engines, and I use them very often. Well worth the investment.
From what I've heard, the AI in Forbidden Memories will actually morph cards away from Exodia, which means that the probability of him drawing all the needed pieces is much less than if it played fairly.
I know nothing about the game, can the speedrunner obtain the exodia cards as well?
@@RaymondCampesino Yes, but Exodia decks are incredibly inconsistent. You’re looking for five specific cards, and missing even one of them will ruin your entire win condition. There are other, more reliable win conditions used in speed runs (and professional matches) for this reason. Yes, you CAN get an Exodia win, but you saw the odds. Now try hitting those odds on every duel you’d need to win a game or tournament. It’s just way too inconsistent to be viable.
Actually the enemys in FM have a deck pool and not a defined deck which means they won't always have exodia in the deck. Getting Exodiad is so rare that it only happend a handfull of times in the entire speedrunning history off this game. While the Chance off him having Exodia in this duel is probably higher than stated in this video. The chance off getting Exodiad might even be lower over all

Me neither. Never had that happen before, but I am not speedrunner so I wouldn't lose much unlike these poor unlucky speedrunners. I feel bad for them.
They use it to their advantage against Materia Keeper through poison damage (considered self-inflicted damage). An optimal fight is casting Bio, it doing 99 damage and poisoning on the same turn. 2 or 3 poison ticks take him down to 7777 health. Next tick does 7777 damage and ends the fight.
That Zelda one actually made me feel sad for the dude when he said "Why on this run, no!" FeelsBadMan.
At about 50 attempts I think I would wait for him to walk and just have it over with. Props to the runner for sticking it out.

Wait, the police aren't supposed to shot the tires at the end of that mission? It happened to me twice in a row. I thought it was a bs scripted event from Rockstar.
@tipaKA Sure, that's what I meant. Just about to enter the tunnel, the chopper always shot my tires. I hated that mission because the other cars with you move like trains on rails and they will blast you away if you stand in front of them, but failing the mission because of some poorly timed scripted event was a bit too much for me.
Nah I didn’t speedrun so I had bulletproof tires. But that sucks dude. Blown out tires makes the game almost impossible at that point.
Not only did they shoot my tires out but they managed to do it when I was UNDER the bridge.
@@RondoOfBloodX They shot them outside the tunnel and it popped inside its how GTA works if you shoot out a tire the tire has to have motion to pop

Okay, i always thought i was just seeing things, my car should have been faster then theirs, and it was as i was passing them at speeds of around 30mph more then theirs, however as soon as i was 100 feet ahead of them their speed went up and they were always behind my tail. This explains a lot.
A lot of the time, racing game AI loves to cheat, and it's not even always because of rubber banding. Very few games restrict the opponent's stats to the vehicle they SHOULD be driving.
The most obvious case of rubberbanding in racing games I know is when you play the original F-Zero. Pick the vehicle with the highest top speed, literally speed-run the best route in a race, and watch the vehicle with the lowest top speed come in about 1 second behind you.
I haven't played any of these games and understood almost everything cuz of short but sweet explanations. Nicu.

@@scotthecarnerd1995 Don't get me started on NFSU's rubberbanding. You could have a rocket car going 400 mph and be in the lead for 5 rounds but the moment you make one effing mistake, you'll get promptly overtaken by a stupid Mazda.
@@mbirth actually, switching to your previous, less upgraded car usually helps. Guess it gives so less of a stat boost for rubberbanding the player, though I'm not sure on how that works.
Honestly, the rubberbanding in burnout 3 was done really well for normal play. Besides how silly it has to be for road rage to exist as a gamemode.

Well put it this way. After so many attempts I'd be like, "it's statistically highly improbable for me to not succeed this time around", so I don't blame him. He should play the lottery. That was very unlucky. Imagine flipping a coin and getting heads 20 times in a row.
For how slow Dampe trudges around the graveyard, it's hard to gauge when it'd be better to cut your losses and stop reloading. I've never speedrun the game, but the last time I played that part of the game, I didn't get the heart piece until the second to last hole (maybe the last one, it's been a while). For a speedrunner to wait and let the game go at normal walking speed, that probably makes the choice even more difficult.
I've never timed it, but to do the whole circuit walking the graveyard probably takes around 7+ minutes.

Man, I rage at games normally, I couldn't imagine how mad I'd be doing a 5 hour speed run to have a bullshit glitch ruin it. I'd likely break a screen.

First time I played Wind Waker, and fought Ganon in the end, I did the finishing attack animation immediately and killed Ganon within 3-4 seconds.

Can't be RNG, as it's scripted that it should only play if you do the attack after Ganon is stunned when the arrow reflects from your shield, so it has to have been some wierd glitch
DarkViperau has some really great AI moments. One of my faves goes like this: Theres a mechanic in gta 5 where a car drifts in front of you in order to try to hit you. This is usually pretty natural and you can avoid it, but one time a tow truck just kinda moved horozontally suddenly at the last moment knocking viper off lmao

@cumquatrct3 no, it doesn't work well in mario kart, it's easily the worst aspect of that game.
@cumquatrct3 Item boxes don't work equally well for human and AI in Mario Kart. AI will always get exactly the item they need in addition to the regular rubberbanding that causes them to catch up for no good reason. They'll also never get hit by stray green shells or run into bananas on their own.
i refuse to play arcade racers due to rubber banding. sim racing for life!

Ah rubber banding! It all makes sense! I always thought when I modded my NFs most wanted and gave me a maxed out car to get a starter boost. the AI still kept up in their stock Honda civics lol
Rubber banding made no sense these days.
It's not just rubber banding, if you play on PC (60 FPS) you can see cars teleporting slightly forward and moving as if they where being pushed by something as well as ignoring friction
police cars are even worse, with a high enough resolution you can see it clearly by looking behind you while at full speed or while they recover from a crash
It's like instead of backing up and steering themselves back on track, they just play an animation as if they did that

At that point spin the ai out at the start it takes half a sec longer but saves having cancer and a brain aneurysm at the end

When I was young I thought racing games looked kinda fun, but disliked them, because I somehow always lost at the last minute.
I later found out about rubber-banding/slow-downs, and it put me off racing games for good.
Never knew Forbidden Memories cheated. Loved that game. Explains why I could never beat the six, though.
Even with some really lucky draws, they still always had something better than me. lol
In gran turismo 3 in rally race it would probably made things more interesting. Don't get me wrong it is definitely rage inducing when it happens but when you lap somebody every two laps if I did manage to get passed it would taken extreme amount of rubber banding. Nobody keeps up with the pikes peak escudo in rally races. Nobody.

I enjoy watching speedruns but if some of this stuff happened to me I'd be so tilted.
About the Exodia one, I once had the AI (think it was the 5th duel out of the bunch or around there) pull Exodia on the second turn in a casual run, that was when I RQed the game for like a year, hate it when AIs have insta-win stuff in games when you can't save in-between:/

the difference here is that the mailman in MM isn't an AI giving a response. In the JP version of MM more or less its, 10.01 and 10.00 share the same input frame and so you can just get 10.01 instead of 10.00. Now that isn't a problem in the English version of MM. You can always get a 10 second time on English if you actually time it right.

Little correction on geometric series: The probability of 103 trials needed is actually a tenth of what is stated in the video.
A geometric distribution with success rate p and failure rate 1-p (abbreviated as q because we're lazy) would have p = 0.1 for this dampe case and q = 0.9.
The probability that k trials are needed for the first success in a geometric distribution is q^(k-1)*p. The value given in the video, about 1/50,000, is roughly the value of .9^102. In fact, this event is ten times less likely than this - out of half a million cases, only one would ever have this outcome.
The explanation for why the chances are so much lower follows: We see that the probability of the first run being a success is 10%. The probability that we get one failure and the second pull is a success is the probability that the first run failed times the probability that the second run succeeded, or p*q. For the third run being the winning run, we require the first two runs to not succeed (so q^2) times the third run winning (p). For K runs, we observe that the first k-1 runs must not succeed (q^(k-1)) and the final run must work (p).
1 in 464798 is the probability to get a success at 103 attempts.
But keep in mind, 1 in 464798 is the probability to get exactly 103 attempts. In the video he is saying that is the probability to need at least 103 attempts. Which is to say 103 attempts or more.
We can calculate the probability of succeding prior to 103 attempts, which includes all possible outcomes prior to 103 attempts.
We want to know what the probability to have this bad of a run, or worse.
The probability we are looking for here is P(X >= 103), not P(X = 103)
P(X >= 103) = 1 - (P(X = 1) + P(X = 2) + ... + P(X = 101) + P(X = 102) )
If you do this, you get around 0.0019%*, like stated in the video. or 1 in 51644.
So, the video is correct in that succeding in 103rd attempts or worse is equal to 1 in 51644.
Worded differently, 1 in 51644 or 0.0019% of all attempts, you will fuck up as badly as this speedrunner did.

@8-bit pepe Yes, I understood that. But the glitch wasn't really the AI's fault in thst case.
The AI just threw the potion and UKOGMonkey jumped on the blob too early.
