    I play a lot of osu! (rhythm game) and every custom keyboard I’ve built has noticeably worst input latency than a lot of gaming keyboards, so gaming keyboards have always been my go to choice. Hopefully customs start widely adopting things like optical switches and software features like rapid trigger so there can truly be a best of both worlds

    • @IntelEdits
      @IntelEdits ปีที่แล้ว +42

      Better durability is also something I want, on my keyboards that have lubed switches (I’ve both lubed them myself and have boughten them from services that lube them for you) I’ll always have a few switches that die after a few months of heavy use. For now I’ve given up on customs, the novelty isn’t worth the lack of functionality compared to significantly cheaper keyboards IMO

      I've found that custom keebs are rather tall and produce much more strain in my wrist when gaming. Gaming keyboards aren't as tall and feel much more comfortable for me anyway. Also the input delay is so important when gaming.. It's overlooked forsure

      But the thing is, latency is varied on MCU performance, firmware, not a switch itself. there is a keyboard uses optical switch, but the latency is over 20ms, 200Hz scan rate.

    • @SupperGammer
      @SupperGammer ปีที่แล้ว +11

      I don't know what kind of customs you've been building, but the ones I've done (exclusively 40% truly custom boards) have performed better in almost every way (with the exception of RGB, because I'm shit at soldering SMDs). First of all, all the pro-micro based keyboard run on a 16Mhz Atmega chip which is way faster in both scanning the matrix of the keyboard and processing the inputs. Stock QMK runs the keyboards at either 250hz or 500hz polling rate to the host which is a little slower than most gaming keyboards but with a simple change in the config file you can set it to 4000hz easily and it works like intended (as long as you have USB2.0 High Speed set up on the MCU which is a whole other task in itself), which, again is faster than most gaming keyboards out there. The thing is those pro-micros are built for doing much more than run keyboards so they're not bottle necks at all (usually, unless you're doing stuff like split keyboards or screens using I2C, which throttles them and is better left to ARM based MCUs). There's even the chance to run without diodes and matrix scanning using IO expanders, which, in theory should be even faster. The thing about durability is that it depends much more on the switch and the manufacturer than it does on what you do with it. I run a heavily modded Gateron Aliaz switch daily which has paper in it for leaf spring stiffness, lubed housings, stems and springs and none of them have gone bad for over a year now, while, I had very lightly lubed Tecsee switches that died constantly and seemingly randomly. The durability of the keyboard itself is much the same way, depends on what you get, and as a bonus, it can be easily repaired/cleaned/maintained. Also, once you write your own code for them the usability just increases beyond novelty, macros, tap-dances, tap-hold features and so on that no keyboard OEM will ever do.

    If latency is a concern, it's definitely worth trying QMK. It scans at about 1000 Hz, and can get ~10ms latency with the default deferred debounce, or ~5-7ms with asymmetrical "eager" debounce.

    • @SupperGammer
      @SupperGammer ปีที่แล้ว

      Also the USB polling rate can be increased. I run mine at 2000Hz whereas most stock configs have it at 500Hz I think.

    I think it'dve been worth mentioning how you can still have gaming features like macros with QMK/Via firmware boards since it was mentioned a bit earlier in the video. In some ways, those keyboards can be even more capable than the gaming keyboards that use closed source proprietary software. At some point, a segment on firmware could potentially be informative to the average keyboard buyer. I've been thinking lately about building an ideal (to me) gaming keyboard layout, and it'd probably be some sort of split ortho build but with more keys than you'd find on a typical split ergo board, but I don't really game enough with mouse and keyboard anyway so it's hard to justify given putting time into figuring out given there's other stuff to do. It is kinda surprising that there's not really many gaming boards that use ortho 1u layouts since it's a lot easier to reach keys with those layouts than on an exploded staggered board.

  • @NainGeantMiniature
    @NainGeantMiniature ปีที่แล้ว

    Main features I like about my logitech boards (vs most mechanicals in the same price range):
    - Multi-device support with rapid switching,
    - consistent support for regional layouts,
    - good, mature software with lots of quality of life features,
    - performance is usually top tier (operational, but also battery life, luminosity, connectivity),
    - same software as other peripherals (less bloat),
    - great warranty service and support.
    Personally, I'd love it if Logitech designed an MX Keys Mechanical variant geared towards keyboard enthusiasts. They did one for the regular MX Keys for media creators that has custom features for artists.
    I don't think something that you'd need to assemble, that's not their business model, but something that allows for custom switches and keycaps with other gamer benefits would be a good middle ground and very interesting. Especially if those "gamer benefits" are stuff like:
    - Lightspeed connectivity
    - TKL with a numpad attachment (like the Asus Claymore II you tested last year), but that can work standalone and can have the keys remapped as macros with a profile switching feature.
    - Removable faceplates like the Logitech G715
    - Wireless charging (like the Angry Miao Cyberboard)

    Why I like gaming keyboards: I do not like light and saturated colors, I LOVE clicky switches (I would endlessly enjoy a keyboard that sounds like a typewriter), there is FAR too much confusing info on custom keyboards, most custom keyboards do not have what I need (100% layout and volume rocker of some kind are an absolute must), choosing keycaps is insanely hard(mostly because of availability), the custom keyboard crowd's take on RGB (RGB should be functional - it is utterly pointless in non shine through keycaps). I think that about covers the important parts. And another thing is, I am not rich enough to test everything out, to find out what I would like more, talking about the myriad of parts that can go into a custom keyboard and influence it's final feel and most importantly sound.

  • @Lortherain
    @Lortherain ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Nr.1 My favourite switches are clicky so any sort of lubing is out of the window.
    Nr.2 The simplistic look of custom keyboards gets really tedious to me, of course they look clean but at the same time it would be too hard to match it to the rest of my setup.
    Nr.3 I find customs having differences in MS compared to your regular run of the mill ''gaming'' keyboard which immediately negates any upsides they might have for me.
    To conclude : Customs are cool, people that like the sound and feel and type a lot will love them. Issue comes with polling rates, with the price of customs I cannot justify having problems like that.

    The part about the keyboard being faster than the razer blackwidow v3 mini is false. Using the hyperspeed adapter(which the keyboard comes with) make it one of the fastest(lowest latency) on the market. That number displayed looks more like the bluetooth latency.

    I have a GMMK2 from Glorious, it's kind of a nice middle ground since it supports hot swapping switches, has rgb (listen, listen, I love me my rainbows), has good switches that I believe come factory lubed (don't quote me, I haven't had any rattling or scratching, stabilizers feel good too with no issues or rattling). Most importantly though, it's small. I do digital art (as well as more traditional mediums) at my desk so I need room for my drawing tablet when I'm working on projects. My last keyboard was a full size one, so going down to a 65% one has really freed up a lot of space. Doing research when I was looking into getting a new keyboard actually led me to your channel, and while building a custom keyboard is very interesting to me the price and time to acquire all the parts was less enticing; the GMMK2 was compelling at the price point and for the fact many local stores carried it in stock and I could just plug and play. If I ever want to dip my toes into customizing, it's not a terrible platform to build from too.

      and in the community, loudness for the most part isnt that much of a concern. for the most part, thats usually a concern when it comes to specific cases like using a custom at work or having others around in ur desk space.

    For the “every mechanical keyboard has roughly the same latency so gaming keyboards don’t count” argument, in some games, every millisecond matters. 10 ms latency on a keyboard might sound unfamothably godlike to normal people, but to professional gamers, it’s pretty high, even if no one can visually perceive a difference between 10 ms and 5 ms keyboard latency. Just wanted to point that out for ya.

That is why I stick to Keychron and cheaper** AKKO boards right know.
    I would really like to see more nicely colored keycaps with shine through - but there isn't much available.

    This is probably the strangest comment you’re gonna get about why I much prefer my £40 prebuilt board over a custom keyboard: I really like the rattle noise you get from bone dry stabilisers.
    I don’t know why. It doesn’t do anything, it doesn’t affect me in any way, I just really like it as a background sound when playing games.
    It’s gotten to the point that playing on keyboards with lubed switches will make me do WORSE in game because it feels too unnatural to me, the keys feel too squashy like there’s no resistance at all. Then again I’m also the same type of person who played on a membrane keyboard for years because I didn’t know there was such thing as a mechanical keyboard until I was 15 years old.

    To answer the RGB question
    I have 2 different profiles I usually switch between, one with rapid fire and 1 without rapid fire but certain keys have a different actuation point. One profile is running static and the other is running a reactive ripple effect.
    So I use the RGB to let me know that I am on the right profile. Also a Wooting keyboard 🤌🤌😊

    For me its not about the eastatic. I honestly couldnt care less. As long as its black and types well. I can play games perfectly fine on your average office keyboard. Granted, ghosting comes into play, but despite that, they were designed to feel somewhat good when typing on. Thats what makes a keyboard a keyboard to me. (I should probably state that I vastly prefer a well made keyboard over a keyboard made to just work, lol)

    Before I built my board, I was using a Ducky One2 Mini and I took it apart and adding foam, then getto lubed the switched and stabs (basically, I just put the lube on my brush and shoved the bristles into the switches). I also left the middle screw just barely on. So basically, it's there, but it's ever so slightly turned just enough to not come out. And, it's crazy quiet now. It actually sounds good for what it is. But that made me want to start from scratch. So I bought a cheap GK61 kit that comes with everything you could pick from. So I played around with it and I love my new board to the point that I'm leaving really long comments just to use it more than I normally would use a board. But, I do need new stabs. While they aren't bad, there is some rattle in my backspace and space. Mostly my backspace. Hey, a reason to type better.

    I wanted to have a custom keyboard, but latency, and key presses handling per polling(aka chord split) is crucial for rhythm games. I use ASIO, so the audio latency is about 1~2ms. most of cases, you won't feel different between custom keyboards, and gaming keyboards in terms of MCU performance, but in ryhghm games, nah. latency is subjective, don't need that low, but constant interval of polling processing, key presses handling per polling is really important. BTW, you can modify QMK config, and make settings game ready...? if the MCU of board is powerful enough.
    I believe the default setting of QMK is about 125~250Hz of polling rate, and only 1 key press per polling, readlly bad for gaming.

      You legitimately cannot notice a difference. I guarantee you, you will not perform better or worse

    • @RaceDriverMIKU
      @RaceDriverMIKU ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@fruittree1670 Yeah, I have already written that, most of cases, you won't feel any differences. but as I've said, some of games, especially rhythm games, some of which have very short latency is about 1~2ms(milliseconds, I'm not joking). and human is QUITE sensitive to the delay of sound, you will feel it, but it is not meaning you can play better. (RTL latency within 20ms ok, under 10ms is recommended. but I did much better with my huntsman V2) but the less latency is, the better what so ever. trill, and scroll speed becoming slow is really helpful when low latency is achieved. human is really sensetive to audio delay, so trying searching about it.
      Just in case, without using ASIO API, or WASAPI exclusive, you can not achieve under 20ms audio latency, so most of applications, their audio latency is just more than 50ms, even more.

    • @RaceDriverMIKU
      @RaceDriverMIKU ปีที่แล้ว +1

      And also, timing window rhythm games have quite tight is about ±12~18ms.

  • @MladyWellz
    @MladyWellz ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The only reason I love my razer ornata is the low profile keycaps, there's no angle to the keyboard(I like the flat feeling), the wrist rest, and the RGB choices I have. The thing I do hate and am now learning about is the loud switches as it wakes up my husband and myself if one is awake and the other is sleeping because of the loud typing. (he has the same keyboard and were both very fast typers so it's LOTS of noise when sleeping)
    I'd swap to a different brand for more variety of what I want but finding a wired low profile RGM keyboard with thock sounds impossible. I'd swap to Razer's huntsman v2 as it sounds the best to me out of the choices, has a wrist rest, and is less clicky sounding than my ornata but idk what those switches feel like and they don't have a low profile option for keycaps which are my dealbreaker.(regular full-height keycaps hurt my fingers so I like my smol boys.)
    It sucks because I love the idea of a custom keyboard but they're pricy and I love my rainbow effects so sadly, I'm stuck with razer. If anyone has any recommendations without breaking the bank, that'd be appreciated.

    • @jessebensen3569
      @jessebensen3569 ปีที่แล้ว

      Razer does make a cheaper version of the Ornata that doesn't have the mecha membrane switches (so it doesn't make the clicky sound). I've been using it as my spare keyboard (for my laptop) since it's only $40. Alternatively, The Razer Deathstalker V2 is low profile and comes with red linear optical switches that are extremely quiet, but it's an expensive board and if you're used to the clicky Ornata, you will probably find it difficult to adjust to the linear keys. I gave it a try and found that it was too easy to accidentally actuate while resting your fingers on a key.

    • @MladyWellz
      @MladyWellz ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jessebensen3569 Heya. I've looked at the ornata's but their sound profile is still just too loud for me, trying to get away from that type of switch sound. The deathstalker is a bit overpriced for sound profile imo as you can just make a custom board yourself for the same cost and get everything you'd want, I just don't wunna get into that hobby yet.
      an update since this comment though, I got away from razer since they're just too expensive for what I'm looking for and got the dustsilver k84 which comes pre-modded, RGB, thock sounds, pre-lubed switches, and pretty decent stabs right out of the box. It's not perfect but I can mod it later which I appreciate. but as you mentioned, getting used to linear switches has been incredibly hard lol. It's SO easy to just hit another key because they're so absurdly smooth and easy to push down. I love the feel but as I mentioned, lots of typos. So I kinda miss the mecha membrane feels but I can get used to this one over time. I also will miss the low profile board but I've gotten used to higher keycaps over time. Still kinda hurt my finger tips a bit but I can settle.

      1. Open the keyboard (duh).
      2. Take out each individual switches.
      3. Put them in a container.
      4. Take them to a ventilated area to lube them.
      5. Grab your lube and shake for a couple of seconds or so.
      6. Hold your switch down and turn it upside down.
      7. Spray the inside of the switch (MAKE SURE YOU ONLY SPRAY IT ONCE, DON'T HOLD THE NOZZLE).
      8. Repeat with every switch.
      9. Line the inside of the previous container with some tissue paper.
      10. Place your switches inside and wait for it to dry, make sure you put it in some place that is ventilated and avoid dust build-up.
      11. Fill your case with any dampening material (I use killmat and a layer of shelf liners).
      12. Once switches dry, put them back into the pcb.
      13. (Optional): Tune the stabs.
      14. Reassable your keeb.
      15. Enjoy.
