The NEW VISSER: I'm EMBARRASSED for this company! They failed worse than imaginable!

  • Please read: Visser turned a once happy customer (despite issues) into a pissed off customer that no longer trusts the brand. He contacted me via StripersOnline asking if I could talk, and take a look at the reel.
What you see in the video, was exactly how the customer received the reel after being serviced by the manufacturer. The reel had not seen use since being serviced.
Bear in mind, the customer sent Visser a note letting them know that he suspected saltwater intrusion. They acknowledged receipt of that information.
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Below are a few of the relevant communications between the customer and Visser
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
FIRST Communication sent from the Customer to Visser on Visser's website.
Purchased the reel on 11/11/2020 from J&H tackle
And I’m pretty sure one of the seals failed that protects the clutch and main gear. I’m seeing milky grease inside the housing and the main gear has rust on it. This shouldn’t happen to a 10 day old reel
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
First reply from Visser to customer....(very prompt reply on a holiday by the owner of the company)
Hello (redacted), your absolutely correct! We have to see why it failed so please send it to our service center.
The address is: VISSER Reels LLC 591 North Main street Seymour Ct 06483
We will identify the issue and get will get the reel back to you quickly!
    Thanks
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NEXT IS A DIRECT REPLY TO THE OWNER OF VISSER
There’s internal water damage I hope this weill be address as well. Thanks for the immediate response. Happy Thanksgiving
This reel is a monster, i really do like it.
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THIS IS HOW VISSER DESCRIBES THE WORK THAT WAS PERFORMED (and what you see in the video is how it was received by the customer)
"We replaced the spool shaft seal assembly and clutch housing nut and main seal on your reel and re greased the gear case. FYI the grease we initially lube the reels with is a bit milky in nature. There is a slight chance that the spool shaft seal may leak again in the future. We have experienced one other reel that may have took in a little water and have already redesigned the seal and upgraded the actual seal material. New seals are being manufactured as we speak. They will be available the end of December. Once they arrive I can send you a new seal with instructions on how to replace it."

A very fair and impartial review... willing to cut the company some slack when it's realistic (i.e. we don't live in a perfect world and things go wrong even with the best companies and their intentions, and talking about their quick turn around times when contacted with a problem), but also lets us know what is completely unacceptable when you send things in to be serviced and they don't do their job. Visser should send you a thank you for helping them identify their quality control issues in their service department so they can fix them PDQ (likely someone is going to get fired and replaced!)...

I'm glad I found this video. I was considering buying one but no more. Possibly this is a one-off situation or possibly this new design has some issues. Great example of why it sometimes doesn't pay to be first in line to buy a new product. I do hope you do a follow-up on this. I'm curious how Visser handles this. Anything short of a free replacement in this case would be disappointing.

When you're in the premium line business - whether it's cars, watches, electronics, or fishing tackle...reputation is EVERYTHING. Yes sure, your products may be hand-made with the most expensive materials...but if word gets out that your product or service is subpar - bye bye profits. The fact of the matter is, people can buy cheaper products than yours that will likely get the job they need done just as well or almost as well, but they chose your product because they expected the premium "experience", which includes performance, reliability, and in case something goes wrong - premium service. Not a good start for the boys at Visser. Props to you for calling it like it is. I know you're not out here just trying to rip into companies and ruin them...but the truth is the truth. This $700 reel they cheaped out on when it came to repairing it will likely end up costing them 100 fold in the long run. Already several people on this video posting about how they were just about to buy one for the holidays but now they're not.

Warning- Reel Companies and Service Departments, if you want to stay on top of your game and continue to make a name for yourselves- don't end up like this where your stuff ends up on Tackle Advisors' bench and be put to shame! End of story!!! Thank you Tackle Advisors for your keen observations and keeping us up to date on sorry equipment and services out there. I live in North Carolina and had a bad situation with a certified Shimano service center in Goldsboro. I sent my Twin Power to them to get the "Higher End" service to it due to the class of reel that it was. When I got my reel back it was obvious that they didn't even touch it. All dust and small sand particles were still on it. I called them up and made the complaint. They paid for the shipping to send it back in. On the second round- it was no different. At that time- I've come to realize that you cannot trust people anymore and it is definitely hard to find good quality service these days.

I've worked in manufacturing over 40 years, and this looks like the type of attention to detail that most employees put into the job; NONE!
The prevaling attitude of the majority of production workers is to shrug their shoulders and say "So what? I'm getting paid."

I’ve been wanting to buy a new reel but it seems the only fully sealed real is a van staal which I and most people probably wouldn’t want to dish out 700 bucks for a reel, what reel would you recommend? Should I just go with something like a battle 3? And if I have issues it’s not a big deal since it’s 120 bucks? What are you’re thoughts or do you think spending a few hundred more for a spin fisher/ sarragossa is worth it? Thanks so much and keep up the good work

I've got an old Shimano 5010 baitrunner that's been used on rivers, canals and off the rocks in West Scotland, never been serviced or cleaned (rain takes care of that) and still works like new. It's at least 15 years old, maybe cost me £60 or so, can't remember!

I had a very old VS100 serviced by (name withheld). It took almost the whole year to get it back. When it finally got to me the shop initially sent it to my former address (I had moved in the interim) even though I spoke with someone and gave them my NEW address. When I called about it’s whereabouts everybody denied speaking to me. Whatever. After numerous calls to USPS it finally arrived. As soon as I took it out of the box I IMMEDIATELY noticed the handle kept turning if you cupped the rotor. I called the owner and he said “I never check for that, I just assume that it would work.” I flipped out and after numerous regrettable comments from me he agreed to take it back on his dime. It came back about a week later working.
The moral of this story is this: reel repair guys are rushed, they don’t pay attention to what they’re doing or they just don’t GAF.
What happened here with this reel was it probably got mixed up with someone else’s and a reel mechanic “thought” he repaired it when he actually didn’t even crack it open.

As a Staten Islander, I liked your accent Scoob,.. pretty good. "Garbage." --a commonly used adjective on SI. That olive colored grease looks very "aluminum oxidized green grease that looked unaffected where it was sticking to the side-plate. I have seen many aluminum gears completely oxidize a white grease to gray in one minute of handle cranking. What's clear to me, is that they simply applied fresh grease to the old. Tool tip: under low torque this doesn't matter but you want to turn the wrench "over" from how you had it, to loosen the nut--less likely to pull away/slip off a greasy nut in that orientation. You probably know anyway. That does indeed look like rust. Some salt got in? Stainless doesn't mean stain-free, it just stains less, with rust or corrosion. The problem with stainless steel is that it can chew up brass and aluminum. That add lash space between the teeth and it gets geary. Penn used bronze which has much better sliding wear-resistance than brass. Bronze is copper and tin (fairly harder than zinc which is in brass, so it won't agree with stainless. What's rusting that gear, made that bearing crunchy. And is that gap at the rotor still wide open to water? That pinion may be pseudo brass they use to make hose nozzles now. So, the materials are "garbage" for $700. The reel, to me, is a $100 reel. That clicker spring is backward, yeah, unless it's to give you a choice of more/less tension for preference. I doubt that! And, "Pentium Brake" sounds so 1990s, like "Intel Inside" chips. They may be quick to respond but given the quality of service, this Visser eviscerates your wallet for old school technology of design and materials (except the shaft?), let alone service. Gobbage! It reeks of gimickry. There's a sucker market out there for high end junk if you knkow nothing about materials/design and have to trust the exortionary price to convince you it must be superb. Eggs are eggs no matter who scrambles them. The Visser folks lay rotten ones. How dare they sell eggs for 700 bucks!

I despise Daiwa...they are break down faster than any reel ordering parts from them is a nightmare usually weeks on back order. The customer service is terrible..schimano might not make bulletproof reels and I hate their stock drag. But when something breaks I go online click the schematic and order the part and have it on my door 3 days later.

I cant believe they want you to sign an nda, they should take this video with a grain of salt and look forward to any future videos you do on them since you provide really useful information, that they can use to improve thier company. If I were them, I would try to address the issues you brought up and then send you a newer model to try and get a better review out of you, because I know your reviews influence alot of ppl on thier purchases. (My self included)

What good is a review on a cherry picked reel when it comes to anything but design and tge quality of parts. The issues with Visser is they seem to have employees techs with the lowest pride in their work and no procedures are in place for accountability and tracking of tech to reel associations.
The design is awesome. The overall quality of the parts is good to excellent [a bit of room for improvement]. But the overwhelmingly piss-poor area that puts them below reels on the open shelf at Walmart is assembley and service. You could open 100 $30-50 reels and not find a defect in assembly. With Visser I would not be surprised if 25% had some defect.

@tackleadvisors what’s your opinion on the van staal vsx reels? I am considering purchasing a 275 instead of a zeebaas zx27 and I would like to hear your opinion on the quality of the van staal. I purchased a zeebaas reel about 8 months ago and it’s had problems with the main gear with machining defects on the drive side of 3 gear teeth on the main gear. Ron replaced the gear set mentioning that the gears were functional but replaced at customer request. For a $900 plus dollar reel supposedly made in the USA the gears should be functional and of high quality. The second set of gears were also very poorly made and were abnormally rough and would bind at different parts of the handle rotation. They have now had my reel for 3 months and it’s a battle to get anyone to look at it and get it fixed. I try to support American made products but was shocked at the poor quality gears placed in the reel. Makes me wonder if the gears were made in China or perhaps were made in the US by someone who obviously doesn’t care. This is why I am actually considering a van staal vsx for once.

I'm sorry zeebaas hasn't taken care of you. Last time I spoke to Ron they moved to be closer to where all the parts are manufactured... And last I was aware... Gears were made stateside. I could reach out to him if you want on your behalf... If ya want just email me at tackleadvisorsinitiative@gmail.com.... They both should be as tanky and with the edge going to ZB for drag and refinement.

What at first appeared to be stellar customer service suddenly turned into a Chicago-style quick oil change service. Sad that the tech at the 'service' company didn't even appear to try. BTW, I've never liked Diawa, dating back to the early 80's. But that's another story...

Companies pay lots of money to consultants for dissection and troubleshooting that you just did for free. How they move forward will determine what type of company Visser is. You gotta work harder than the established companies like VS if you wanna play in their sand box.

Since all sealed reels leak why not make a reel that you just fill up the body with gear oil like the transmission on a car? They could make it easy to simply empty the used oil and change the oil. Could make it easy to change out used bearings and install new bearings. Could make the components out of brass.

Interesting channel. I've always liked messing with reels--baitcaster and spinning. I've never spent more than $150...probably more like $100. If I used one in salt, apart it came when I got home. I guess even Van Staal spinning parts are made in China. I can't imagine spending $500 or more on any reel. If I did, I'd want it to be flawless. Planned obsolescence...boo.
