Dear Charlie, this video brought me to tears. I was born and live in Australia, but in the 90s I lived with my Uncle in the UK (who was like my dad). His passion was railways, and he would take my out every weekend to look at the stations and trains around his area.
My layout is British in honour of him.
He has passed on and I’ve not been able to return with my family to the UK. Your video was like being back with him again, having a day out and learning his about his love.
I was also able to share this video with my children, showing them what it was like for me going out with their great uncle. They were fascinated and finally saw why I have such passion for British model railway.
Thank you so much for all your time and effort in putting this video together. So heart warming. Would love to see more.
    God Bless you Charlie
    Anthony

I have shown a couple of these videos to my advanced level English students in Kazakhstan and they neither know model railways nor the compound adjective heart-warming but they've said pretty much the same thing.

Dear Mr Bishop. How dare you place that signal box that you paid for, on your layout in your own home in the wrong position. At our last meeting of the Wanksworth Entitled Rivet Counters and Twats Club, it was decided you that we will send a strongly worded telegram to your manager. It has also come to our attention that some of your sleepers are slightly too close together and that you gain FAR too much enjoyment from your trains. This is an appalling situation and must be rectified immediately. You seem to be under the impression that you can "do what ever you like" with your own property. If people just did anything without care, it would be chaos. Where would we find situations to be superior? Yours Sincerely J Knobhead. Secretary.

A good mix of on the road and back in the studio shots Charlie. Some good ideas of how to make railway buildings into something different. Clever shots from drone which put the trains in context. Please do a few more of these from time to time they make a welcome and refreshing break.

Yes, except it's a false expectation to calculate the selling price of something based on its production cost. Things are sold at a price that customers are willing to pay for it, regardless of costs. After all, this is capitalism, not accountantism.

Charlie, Signal boxes can be a can of worms. Templecombe, haven't been back for many years. Just passed the station was a shop that served ice creams in the summer. When railway stations were being " modenised" ( 60's) you could have a British Rail, signal box. Some looked like World War 2 gun emplacement bunkers ( all concrete) and at the other end of the station a Pre- Group signal box. Even though British Rail had their own "House colours" a lot of signal boxes could be found in pre grouping colours. At Liverpool's Lime Street station in the cuttings was an L.N.W.R. signal box in full pre-group glory. Until it closed in the late 60's. I wonder what happened to Airfix's Midland Signal Box kit? In 1963 it only cost around 2/6d. Cheers Chris Perry.

Really enjoyed the video. Signal boxes come in all shapes and sizes, and that was just in Lincolnshire. Have taken 100s of local signal boxes, covering the Cleethorpes to Barton line, Cleethorpes to Sheffield via Brigg and Worksop, Barnetby to Nottingham and Doncaster to Peterborough via the GN &GE joined line. Photos all on Flickr, but one of my favourites must be Hubbert's Bridge signal in Lincolnshire 1960s, wish it was a better day when I took the photos.
A few of the boxes I have photographed have been pulled now, modernization plan, Ulceby, Pasture St, Sleaford South and North.
Did manage to take pictures of the last place to have a signal boxes called North, South, East & West back in 2010s, Sleaford.

Cracking video Charlie...stuck out here in SW France that road trip was just what I needed. I was well impressed with your drone shot, its always fun trying to spot the 'pilot' Re SBs there is also the Wills SS48 kit at a reasonable £13.50 though it is SR and based on Farnborough. The interior kit SSAM103 ironically is £16.50. I also like the card version you had, Superquick I think it was and have these and the Airfix kits on my layout as its only me that knows they aren't region specific. The AA box you can get from Oxford Rail IIRC along with an AA patrol bike and sidecar 🤗

Hi at roughly 12:27 the gentleman outside the steamer, handed the firemen a ring, key ? What was it ? As for the people jumping on you about the signal box, I would like to see how on point their rails are. Mine starts in the 1800''s and ends in the 1980's, then after an army base supplies you go into another room which is a 50's/60's monster wars. So my train so far off traditional, but it is my world. Keep up the great work, canadian subscriber.

    • @marknicholson2281
      @marknicholson2281 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Hi. The signalman was passing over the token to the fireman to signify that that engine now has possession of the single line.. it will be handed back to the next signal box as they pass. This prevents two trains entering the same piece of single track and the possibility of accidents. Hope that is clear. M

    • @knottyal2428
      @knottyal2428 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

The looped gadget is a single line token. It gives the driver permission to proceed, and ensures another train isn't coming the other way. There's only 1 token per section of track.

Charlie, a very different and enjoyable video. More of these would be great if you can find the time. I also follow Tony North Eastern who models railways in Tyneside. Recently he has done some competley different videos by interviewing an ex signalman who worked the area that he is modeling. The stories and info that he told brought the whole layout to life. It's not all about laying track, points, DCC or DC. It's also about the people who used to work on it and the history and knowledge that they can pass on. See you in 2 weeks for another great video. Shame on me, I'd always assumed 44-064 was based on a box "somewhere in that there Lundun"*; given the sister station buildings are based on Sudbury Town and island buildings, I think, Harrow on the Hill. That's me made a fool. Plot twist: This is not difficult, as it is my default setting. I'm not that familiar with that part of the world though, so I can kind of be excused.

Hi Charlie, another great video and very enjoyable to watch. For what it’s worth, I think you should install your daughters signal box on the Chadwick layout. To the ‘really knowledgable’ types it would be a talking point as to why a midlands signal box was sitting in Yeovil town, but for me, the family significance of the midlands box would outweigh all that ‘prototypical’ nonsense. As a father of 3 young children and being in the early stages of a model railway project, I fully expect to be the recipient of many a non-prototypical addition to my layout. Your HST shares platform space with your Western Pullman so why not apply a similar poetic license to your signal box selection?

So glad you are using the Cranmore style box and I think it will look brilliant about 3/4 of the way up the branch towards your representation of Barnstaple. And yes it would be nice for you visit other layouts and see what you could produce from that inspiration, and could inspire us (the viewers) too. See you again in 2 weeks :)

Worth watching for the (Sadly) BR livery EX-GWR 0-6-0 PT, As I kind of like them, as mt first 'proper' train set was the Hornby GWR pick up goods set, with a GWR 0-6-0pt and five wagons and a guards van, small staton a siding and a goods shed.

Loved the road trip Charlie...I struggled to find a GWR box that I liked and that was at least vaguely accurate!....I finally settled on the 0 Gauge Finescale box from Lasercut Railway models...£30 for the kit and with suitable painting/weathering & a few additions of a Peco interior and chimney and also some finial ridge tiles from Smart models it is now looking quite presentable....and although it hasn't got the hooped roof it now looks very like the GWR Signal Box on the Llangollen Railway at Glyndyfrdwy . Like one of your boxes I've kept the roof removable for access and installed lighting too :-) More excursions please!👍

A very useful and enjoyable video. I am planning a Southern Region layout based loosely on Woking and Brookwood Having seen your video I immediately recognised Woking Signal box as another SR type 13 and this one is grade II listed. I also found a useful publication from historic England called "signal boxes" (just google: heag137). This also has a good picture of Brookwood signal box, which it turns out is an LSWR type 4 - also available as a kit!

You didn't mention the Dapol signal box of which I have several produced by Airfix. They are generic Midland so are wrong for your model. Because your box on the "branch" is joint Southern GWR you have the option of a second box which could be Southern rather than ex GWR. Enjoyed the video. I was expecting a picture of the box at Buckfastleigh swell. Thanks for keeping me entertained.

A great video Charlie with some nice ideas for signal boxes. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Lovely to see a bit of my native Somerset too, I'd almost forgotton how green and beautiful it is, since I haven't been since pre-covid. I'll be double jabbed soon, so hopefully it won't be too long now before I can visit my family down there.
N.B. Regarding station names one trick I use is to combine parts of local names to create a fictional one. e.g. Shepton Mallet & Midsomer Norton to create Shepton Norton. Other examples might include Stanton Thrubwell, Dulcote Gurney, Temple Compton, Godney Combe, etc.

Another entertaining video, Charlie, well done - can't beat a bit of 12" to the foot research. But no pubs...? (OK, you were driving!). Getting back to the original theme there is a lot of material to aid the scratcbuilder on youtube. If you've got an hour to spare, have a look at this: th-cam.com/video/R5QEFen5SMc/w-d-xo.html - it looks at BR upgrading their signalling network in the early 1970's, and the wholesale decimation of smaller, older signal boxes that this entailed is an eye-opener. It makes me wonder whatever happened to the (must be hundreds) of signlalmen no longer needed in consequence? And don't even start on the contemporary Health and Safety arrangements: PPE? What's that? I got me wellies on!!

Hmmm. That price of 25 pounds seems in line with plastic structure costs over here in the US. My solution was to buy a bunch of structure and freight car kits I didn't need about 20-25 years ago, then immediately drop the hobby until recently. Now I have "The Hoard" to draw from, occassionally looking at the original price I paid back then and laughing (or crying). Of course, the efficacy of this strategy assumes I'll actually use the kits before infirmity and old age stop me. Cheers from Wisconsin!

Haha. I was going to add to those comments about your inappropriate signal box, but thought I would lessen the embarrassment by at least onje comment. There is modellers licence to apply though and "foreign" companiys did infilttate. After all, who would expect LNWR then LMS in Swansea.
I think Chadwick "rover" is a good idea for an occasional series, but maybe only once every couple of months at the most. Your core raison d'etre is model railways and that is what you do best. Following yours and others videos on the sujbect, I have embarked on Kadee couplers. There are a number of TH-cam vids, but not many which touch on or show why the different NEM sizess are relevant. Hmm, £23 is ±US$31, a bit spendy for a signal ox, but, given petroleum prices for making polystyrene of late, not horribly out of line.
Now, the tough part for signal boxes are the fussy windows. Sure the body of a given building could be made up in foamcore, and masonry cladding ginned up in foam that was suitably carved. But, fitting out the windows and doors (and stair runs) are going to try the patience.
So, it's back to "What monetary value do you put on your leisure time ?" Which tends to guide how you spend it. For some, the time spent painting & weathering a finished kit is a better use of their time; others will differ. There's a similar debate over 3d printed items, as to whether it's "really" modeling to have a finished item faithfully to scale, that you still have to paint and weather and install.
Personally, I'd rather argue about which is a better pint to have with a bacon sarny. That's my 2d.

The signalman nearly lost the token on the locomotive handrail; that might have caused some delay! I agree that £23 seems a lot for that kit, especially when you think that the Dapol (ex-Airfix) kit is around £10. Perhaps GWR modellers are better off!

Hi Charlie, apologies for the delay in commenting, I’ve had a pretty busy couple of weeks ! I love the format of this video, what a great concept - a field visit followed by practical application in a model railway. Well done, I look forward to seeing more of this kind of thing. As a suggestion, how about doing a similar one on ballast ? Ok, I hear you, what’s so interesting about a load of stones 🤣 Well, I’ve done some ballasting on my railway, but to be quite honest, I’m still not settled on colour. So I wondered if I’m the only one ? Perhaps you could visit a few locations and look at how the ballast is formed and what colours are contained in different scenarios - say, main line, sidings, stations and preserved railway tracks. Then perhaps a Part 2 video recreating some of what you’ve found in your field trip ? Anyway, just a suggestion. Take care Charlie.

That’s a great idea Bryan and I will most certainly film some more unusual ballasted areas for comparison.

Very much like your vid Charlie. Love the intricate research you’ve done. Also like the comparison between the different models you showed. £23,- indeed seems a lot for the last one.
Anyhow, whatever which signal box you decide on to put on your layout; you should also consider the one from your daughter, even though it isn’t historically accurate. The gesture of her present is recognition from her heart. Than historical inaccuracies have a lot of leeway.
It’s not that I don’t count my rivets, after all we all try to depict our layouts as accurate as possible. But in the end it is your railroad, your 3d view on what constitutes your passion, with images that are yours.
To close, my humble railroad, I mainly build for myself. Because it’s a great hobby, because I love to scratch build, predominantly from junk. That in itself requires a level of compromise to accuracy, which defies too stubborn rivet counting.
    Thanks for sharing!!

Hi Charlie. Glad you enjoyed your visit to the SDR. It’s my local preserved line and the subject of my layout. I particularly liked the drone shots.
The Ratio kit is actually based on Buckfastleigh North box, but shortened so they could use the roof moulding from an earlier kit. The small box at Staverton is the small Wills box. And the Gaugemaster Teignmouth Box is close to the Totnes Riverside box,
But of more interest maybe, is the signal box you pass shortly before Staverton, Bishops Bridge Signal Box.
This can be constructed by changing the brickwork on the 1st floor to wood by using micro strip or plasticard on your Ratio kit. Or by using the top half of a Gaugemaster Fordhampton Signal Box on top of the bottom half of the Ratio kit. And there lies the advantage of plastic kits, they can be used to make almost any variation if you want an exact replica. But for a fictional line I think I would take the ease of a resin one. Horses for courses.
PS forBuckfastleigh North I used two of the Ratio kits to get the length right, new roof from wills slate sheets and two ratio interiors to fill it, so kits are definitely not the cheap option.
A full history of each box and loads of photos are on the SDR Association sdrsignalling.com website.
If you pop down again I hope I’m there. I’ve always found your channel to be very informative with a good sense of humour. Very much appreciated.

Hello Charlie, this may have already been pointed out (I haven't read all 951 comments!) but the signal box that was a gift from your daughter is of Midland Railway origin. The Midland Railway did reach as far south as Bristol and Bath. Beyond Bath it was part of the Somerset & Dorset Joint line. I am not an expert on the Midland Railway but I know that they had their own lines in the Bristol area and provided their own signal boxes. It may well be that the specific box you have is of a vintage that would not be found in the Bristol area but there were Midland Railway signal boxes in Bristol and the surrounding area so perhaps you could find a way of incorporating your daughter's gift such as a junction with off scene imaginary branch line that connects to a former Midland Railway line/station/yard. Hope this is of some use, Brian.

That was a bit different. Beautifully produced and edited too: like watching an actual TV programme. I kept expecting Tim Dunn to pop up and explain interlocking or something.
Had to laugh out loud at the "scratchbuilding" of the first two signal boxes.
Many years ago, there used to be a model shop at Carnforth, in a signal box on what was then Steamtown, when the public could visit the depot. As well as the shop in the signal box, they also had a model railway layout in a parcels van parked next to the signal box. Wonder what happened to that? Or at least I think it was a parcels van. Someone else is bound to remember better.

What a lovely idea those signal box-style offices are. I'm sure they cost way more to build than the ugly concrete box ones we usually see,
but in 20 years the concrete boxes will be knocked down to make way for bigger uglier ones while these will have a bit of age to them and look even better.
Great to see some video from the old country (I'm in Australia now). As for the modelling, well I've got a GWR signal box on my LMS layout

Enjoyed the road trip Charlie and would certainly be interested to know more about the chap who built the two boxes to house his business. You mentioned the price of kits and I really think it must be a generational thing, I find the price of a lot of model railway stuff quite shocking £18 for a wagon for example and around £40 for a carriage and anything up to £350 for a loco if you have DCC sound. I do agree that that kit looked like a lot of money and although the various parts were coloured there is still a lot of work to make it look realistic rather than just coloured plastic. As I said I think it's a generational thing and not confined to model railways, I just had to buy a washer pump for my Volvo which I expected to be about £30 and it cost over £130 so I have concluded that I am getting old and out of touch!

I thoroughly enjoyed the road trip and video. I have always appreciated your modeling skills but I'm even more impressed with your driving skills. As an American I would have certainly killed someone driving in the UK.

    Hello Charlie,
I am enjoying all of your videos. And even though I am using Marklin in gauge HO, I allways find it very usefull to see most of them. It gives me a lot of fun and inspiration, so please carry on.
Dear greetings from John Stevens, Rotterdam Holland

Charlie, I really enjoyed your road trip, but it is amazing how fast you seemed to be driving, I know this is an allusion caused by filming but it is funny. I'd love to see you visit some modelers home layouts and showcase the huge talents out there. If you do these visits could you include an Irish layout, which there is a lot of RTR equipment being produced nowadays. All Irish Railways were extensions of the English railways I believe. I model Irish railway in Canada. Great videos, keep it up.

Love your drone footage Charlie. I was somewhat surprised to see a Southern Railway signal box at Templecombe. There is a smaller version in Deal, Kent which Hornby produced at one time. There is a preserved one somewhere, but I can’t remember where? I did not realise they will not list it if it has changed its windows - sadly the Deal one now has Upvc windows!

Hi Charlie. Really enjoyed the video and if you're thinking of a smallish signal box for your railway, have a look at the perfect little one at Highley staion on the Severn Valley Railway. So perfect that Bachmann, I think, have made a model of it so if you can get hold of one it's literally plug-and-play.

Thoroughly enjoyed that Charlie. It is nice to see what UK rail is up to. I'll have to go looking about to see what remains of South Australia's signal boxes. I can't say that I have seen any other than at platforms.
In Victoria and NSW, there are plenty of old signal boxes about.
I'd like to see more of your local railway area for sure.

    Rivet counters at work...
Continental stuff is a bit easier... especially when doing an Era 3 layout. Just assume the bridge has been bombed in the war, so throw in 2 stacks of logs and a put a discarded Donnerbuchsen carriage on top. And there you have your 'Behelfsstellwerk'

Rest assured Ivo, I will use that signal box in a different area. I’m not intimidated by rivet counters! Regards Charlie.

Hi Charlie - You picked a lovely time to go out in your beautiful part of the country. Loved the signal box tour.
If I had a large lottery win I would build have someone build me the signal box at Bruton as a home and the upstairs would be one big model train layout, mind you with all the sun coming in I might have to rethink that. Possibly have it in the back garden with automatic blinds just as a railway room, I can dream. Loved the walkway around the building though.
The art deco signal box at Templecombe is the same as the one we have at Bognor Regis and which I am going to have to scratch build as I model in N Gauge.
Must visit the signal box at Totnes as I just love Bakewell tart. What a lovely building, looking forward to paying that a visit.
I think I know where our next caravaning holiday is going to be, thankyou.
    Regards Chris

6:32 shows perfectly where the old link line from the L&SWR to the S&DJR used to run - the wall on the right was a bridge abutment leading into the back road of Templecombe station, with the road to the left running along the old track bed, round to the industrial estate where the S&D's goods yard used to be.

That was different. It does make it easier to understand the British system vs. the US system to see real examples and hear the terms.
As for costs, well... thank your lucky stars you're not over here where inflation is putting the entire middle class into poverty and beholden to the government for handouts that will bankrupt the nation.
Anyway, for those over a certain age 🤚, everything is out of whack. Prices double and product halves. Shrinkflation.
    Thanks for the tour!

Lovely video, Charlie. Nice to see you out and about rather than on or under your baseboards! Can't say you don't do your research. I don't think I could ever be the person who would tell someone else that their signal box is the wrong design. I'd just be impressed they might have one with, perhaps, lights and a lever frame. Your railway, your rules..
Chadminster might be nice as a name for the branch station to suggest a link to Chadwick on the mainline not so far away..

Hi Charlie, yes I like the roaming outdoor style once in a while. Name for the station, Wick Street. At 4.39 on your video, I noticed the clock face facing the track had no hands, any idea why. In Kingsbridge, there is a clock high up in the town center with 4 faces but only three tell the time. The fourth face is blank that faces the old workhouse. I am told it is so the people in the workhouse did not clock watch but is that just a story, I don't know.
