I bought my eldest son one of those HST trains in the mid to late 70's for Christmas . Decided to check it late on Christmas Eve , I love the lights as it went forward , same in reverse . If the wife hadn't stopped me I'd have been there all night . Great days

Hi Charlie Informative and down to earth . I’m 60 now retired last year(lucky me). Only have a test track DCC but I have 167 locos and 70 coaches plus wagons buildings scenery etc waiting to be used on the 28ft x 10ft Ickworth to Stonham Ave railway when it’s built(mk2 version) I have all track plan ready. I put the decoders in using lais one cheap and cheerful. I have crew added as I do this. My period is BR 1954-64 so BR green/ black and experimental on diesels. Love this hobby as it stops me going nuts! Altho the obsession can revert that feeling! Cheers and stay safe.
I have been building a Pirate board game for near on 100 years, or so it seems, I have always wanted a train layout but as life doesn't always give you what you want, your TH-cam posts have filled the void. So my hobby is finishing the board game and watching your clips. Thanks for a great insight to your life.
Another great clip Charlie. Interesting to hear your background story and what lead you to your interest in the hobby. Looking forward to your next video on layout construction. Nick Australia
It was great to see your stock running Charlie and hearing the different sounds from the various decoders and speaker units. Your track work on the curves looked very nice as the HST125 drove through them. You could see the engines and coaches tilt slightly due to your little shims under the outer rails, that added a lovely touch of realism to them. I look forward to seeing Chadwick's fleet growing and the rest of the layout build.

Hi I am from Sri Lanka. I have enjoyed watching your locos and also your commentary. I hvae many boxed hornby, lima and fleischmaan locos and rolloing stock woth a good inventory of nickel silver tracks. Time has been such a constraint, professionally and now with the COVID- 19 taking us all round the bend. Watching and listening to you tonght, has given me some inspirational strength to pick up some courage and take them all out. Sadly, owing to moving houses many times, and job related commitments, I have never been able to have a fixed layout. I am originally from Crewe & travelled by train to school from Crewe every day (steam then BRCW Class 104 DMU's from 1957). I saw the Crewe built Class 52's regularly in their undercoat paint with their running numbers chalked on the cab sides. They were usually going on test runs on the Crewe-Shrewsbury line & the same applied to the Crewe built Class 47's. I still have my Ian Allan Summer 1961 Combined Volume suitably underlined with locos spotted plus the new Class 52's/47's added manually on the rear blank page. Amazing how time passes so quickly! Thanks for another great video. Like you I also loved the Class 52's & it was great seeing them emerge from Crewe Works in their final paint colours of Sand, Maroon & Green. Happy days :-)
Hi Charlie, Nice to see part of your loco fleet in detail. My layout is also based on the Western Region in the early seventies. I am a huge diesel hydraulic fan due to the fact that I was raised in Swindon. I visited the BR railway work shops in the town on a regular basis to view the hydraulics being overhauled and repainted. Although I no longer live in Swindon due to work relocation, I am proud of my Swindon roots. regards John Cave.
Your intro about train spotters made me smile Charlie. Why did we get such a bad press ? At times like this I'm glad I stuck with my Triang P5 controller that i bought in 1955 and its never let me down. No chips, no sound and I dont need a degree in physics to run my trains. Of course the hobby must develop and some of your sounds are really good. I especially liked the 125 coming off the viaduct. Swindon ? Well I suppose they knew a bit there !
Back when Royal Mail used to use trains We used to load mail bags into the old guard room on the 125. We had a special key to open the door. I used to load 2nd class bags onto the parcel wagons, then go around to the other platform and collect mail from the 125's when they came in.
I appreciate a good spreadsheet Charlie, as I use one for my loco’s. Helps me keep of what’s has been completed and yet to complete for each one, and yes I would say I have too many, oh well! cheers Paul.

that class 37 sound was spot on , when in school we used to 'mooch off' down to the track near Llantarnam school and put washers on the track for the coal and steel trains to squash. great fun then but we never noticed the danger side of it. atb
Nice to see the trains running Charlie and get the background as to why you are into it . Way to organised for me . I deal with spreadsheets all day so I suppose loathe to use them in my hobby . But it is good to be a bit disciplined !
You know I enjoy your videos because I have told you so! I am also "sad" and have spread sheets of my locos. Interesting to compare the column headings. I like your idea of making them dynamic and helping to readily identify jobs to be done. I have just added a couple of columns which I find useful. First is a picture of the loco; obviously only appears as a thumbnail but I find it helpful. Second is a record of the principal CVs. For non sound locos I just record CVs 1-6. This came about because one reliable loco suddenly became a really poor runner and I found the starting CV had somehow reset itself to max. Resetting it to 6 brought it back to normal. But it made me realise how useful it would be to have this vital info recorded on the spreadsheet. Keep up the good work.
Nice update Charlie, thanks for sharing. The detail of the worker on the front of the class 08 is a nice touch. Your layout updates along with a number of other you rube modellers have been very inspirational in getting me back into the hobby after a significant break and I’m most grateful. I’m making a start this month (when my order arrives) if your interested in having a look after a bit of garden running during lockdown! All the best, Paul
I also just got trains running properly on my layout too! It's such a relief to see that first one go round with no issues- especially when you're filming it lol!
Hi Charlie - thanks for sharing all your locos and the history behind why you have them etc. Very enjoyable video to watch whilst on my lunch break from work. Great idea around the spreadsheet info to keep track of each loco - something I should do myself for the locos on Blackwood. Cheers Euan
Hi Charlie, great video as per usual. My layout is a anologue steam one and what I've done is fit a steam sound module from Train-Tech, one in a rake of Pullmans, one in a goods wagon. Clever things, they are motion activated and whatever loco goes on the front, you essentially get a steam train. Yes the modules have their limitations and I'd say NOT as as good as chips etc but not a bad anologue alternative. Thanks and take care Charlie, regards Terry.
Loved the Video. Can relate to the SABLE reference. We get sucked in by going to large with our modelling and wanting the best for our layouts and sites. Need to be more circumspect with our desires. I have 30 plus locos because I love the mechanics of them with decoders but live in a unit that doesn't have enough space for a layout. So I collect and store and run them on a programming track. Keep up the good work.
I am always of the belief that if you can use a spreadsheet to help with something in your life you should. Every hobby I have has various catalog spreadsheets to catalog my collection and like you what needs doing on that collection.
Hi Charlie, great video this week. If I recall the 9F Black Prince is on the North Norfolk railway after it was sold a few years back by David Sheppard. Of course used to be on the East Somerset line. Thenloco you're thinking of that he sold to North Yorkshire was Green Knight. We've had the Evening Star down on the West Somerset line and I had heard it had been modified to run on the mainline. Having said that, last time it came down was on the back of a truck.
Do not feel bad Charlie, I have a check list of all my locomotive's in the works. I have ones made up for the vehicle / motobikes I own as they do come in handy to remember what needs to be done. Was nice too listen too your back history in your life along with seeing your collection of British locomotive's up and running!
Those spreadsheets are an awesome idea. I've a similar one for brainstorming ideas in each part of the layout to help me keep track of plans before I forget them. Lovely video. I love the 125s. Remind me of my trips to "town" (London) with my old man (along with Network South East livery).
Charlie - I completely agree with you about Digital Sound having transformed the Hobby. I'm lucky to have two layouts, one a tail chaser and the other a small terminus station. I love watching the trains run by (with a glass of wine as I get older!) but the terminus station also comes into its own with sound locos idling in the sidings. I have a Dapol Western which I think is a great model, though my favourite locos, after the Deltics of my early years, are the Class 50s of my holidays in Cornwall and especially Penzance. Great video - I share so many similar experiences with you. All the best. I'm glad you have trains running at last!
Thanks for the video Charlie. I had Hornby 0 gauge clockwork but my first 00 was the Tri-Ang 0-4-0 running under the name of Nellie. When Kitmaster engines and coaches came out I built a number and then I was hooked. I come from Malmesbury, only a few miles away and although I worked in Swindon in the 1970s. My favourite diesels are probable the Class 20s, Class 33s and Hymechs although I was wowed by the Western class when they first came out. I never liked the Warship class, and when on a trip round Swindon works, we were hurried through the shop containing at least 5 Warships all black with smoke where they had caught fire.
Hi Charlie , I love watching your films , I've always liked model railways and just recently I got the bug again but when I mentioned it to the Wife she said I could have a pair of cats , Love the cats, though they put fur all over the house and its get on my records ( another interest ) , I love the imagery in this video. Keep up the Great work Ade
Hi Charlie always look forward to your videos. Think the spreadsheet is a great idea. Like you my model railway journey started with the Bachmann class 25.
Hi Charlie, To quote the great Michael Caine "did you know " the first class coaches on the HSTs were always at the London bound end of the train. "Not a lot of people know that ". Great vlog as usual. Andy Culham.
Another great video Charlie. I only found your site about 3 weeks ago and I use a spread sheet to make a note of the subject in the video, I haven't started my layout yet but when I do and want to, say ballast track I can do a sort and all the videos covering ballasting track will be listed. Bill
Thanks again for another lovely honest video ! The class 22 had me in stitches. I have a class 142 that refused to travel anti clockwise without derailing on the first corner. After researching online i decided to strip my track clean and Re lay it ballast and all. Only to find the problem was a the coupling( timely mistake there) I think the hobby is about the little problems you get to overcome. Some hobby sights often paint a false no issues if you are experienced persona. Potent words towards realism and prototypical ideologies in the hobby. I am in my 20s and found it off putting when hunting for class 142s - being sniffed at and told to purchase other more reliable/ more prestigious models. I kindly persisted and now have 4 class 142s as I used to travel on them daily and they fit into my 90s era. I love watching them tootle about. A bit of pick up adjustment and fitted them to DCC and they work perfectly . (That class also known for it’s uncomfortable quirk) I sadly avoid railway magazines as they tend to only feature layouts they seem to be prototypical of certain eras. I am a stickler for realism myself and my layout is based on 90s North Yorkshire. I did however add Stonehenge last week to celebrate solstice. I have drafted up an article to stomp modelling snobbery, I have named it ‘ never mind the buffers, here is henge in Yorkshire’ it will be in the post to all major railway magazines soon. Sorry for the rant but an important message I feel. thanks again. P.s do you know where I could get hold of a class 142 sound chips without re mortgaging the house? Keep uploading love it
I am a spreasheet addict, have all my points, locos and stock in them as well as all the modelling magazines where I have listed all relevant or good articles. Sad or what. I moved to Spain in 2005 with two boxes of model rallway thiungs and following inspiration from you I have been setting out a layout during lockdown.
The hst 125 is one of my favourite diesels and the yellow and blue livery would have to be my favourite livery as well. The sound from it is mighty impressive! You have a lovely range of locomotives and how you record their progress or todo items is a neat idea. That class 08 really has some lovely sound coming out of it. Got to admit seeing your lighted brake van on your trains looks great and it’s growing on me to attempt something like that in the future. Really enjoyed watching this and hearing your thoughts on your model. Keep well, Clint
I must admit (though probably not to you Charlie) that until the 125s came along I hadn't really noticed what sort of engine pulled the trains I had traveled on until then. Perhaps it was because I grew up in London and we rather took the Tube for granted? Anyhow they looked so good and so modern and got us down to Bath Spa, and later Chipp'nham, so easily and so comfortably that I really noticed them. I was also impressed by the 225s that took us up to York, easily the most comfortable trains I have traveled on - and they had edible meals in the buffet. God alone knows what old rubbish was pulling me into Victoria and London Bridge from Lewisham, later, when I was commuting, but they usually worked, pulling the old 'slam-door' compartment carriages! Now I just do the occasional trip into London on the Chiltern line, and I must admit I have started noticing the engines in recent months, or had until… Yes, well, thanks for the tour of your collection, and so good to see trains going round your tracks. Nice one Charlie.
Another great update and a cracking way start to the weekend. loved seeing your fleet, especially the 125, phenomenal sound quality and like the differences in speakers. Like how you manage your stock and the to do list on each, may have to nick that idea for my fleet.
As we are in stage 4 lockdown here in Melbourne and basically can't go out of the house, I've been catching up on old videos. I can't believe I have more Locos than you! Most of them are decades old and not really suited to my main area of interest and I'm actually selling them off slowly to help fund newer more suitable ones. Luckily I haven't really been bitten by the sound bug, I only have 1 ESU diesel and 3 TTS steam locos but with iPhone speakers instead of the standard ones. Nice to see and hear some of your fleet trundling around - Cheers
awesome video i really enjoyed it! those 2 0-4-0s are clearly the best locos ive ever seen!! awesome stories, keep it up ill loo forward to more videos!
I had to stop railway modeling last year Charlie, after moving onto a 40'' narrowboat. but still like to watch how a few TH-camr's develop their layouts, for me I was brought up in the area where class 40's & later 37's where introduced, as for a favorit loco class introduced by you for power and style it's the Western, but the all time real favorit locos are, the class 14, and the small Suzler locos 24, 25, 26 &27's (would be a toss of a coin/which day between these) would be my other option. on a preserved railways these are the best, (on the clas 14, now the radiator has been increased by a inch in depth for cooling, so reliability is better).
I have in my tools a little paint stirrer .Its batterie operated and its a very handy little tool I would recommend one . By the way another great film well done
Afternoon Charlie loved the video trains running at Chadwick lovely hst I think everyone loves them young and old I have 1in GNER and 2 GWR the new green livery and 1in Sir Kenneth Grange I have yet to add sound but they are dcc fitted and my GNER is tts sound fitted don't you just love that valenta engine when she starts up.I bet when you first saw that class 25 with sound back then was amazing Best wishes Kev
Being a Western fan it's nice to see other eras represented other than the grouping era, if or when I get the space I would like to represent a mixture of late crest locomotives and early TOPS, a thoroughly good video Charlie

This came about because one reliable loco suddenly became a really poor runner and I found the starting CV had somehow reset itself to max. Resetting it to 6 brought it back to normal. But it made me realise how useful it would be to have this vital info recorded on the spreadsheet. Keep up the good work.
What a heartwarmimg comment Barry Harding. Stay safe, regards Charlie
Ok Charlie thanks for being helpful with my 125
No problem 👍
Nice update Charlie, thanks for sharing. The detail of the worker on the front of the class 08 is a nice touch. Your layout updates along with a number of other you rube modellers have been very inspirational in getting me back into the hobby after a significant break and I’m most grateful. I’m making a start this month (when my order arrives) if your interested in having a look after a bit of garden running during lockdown! All the best, Paul
I’m so pleased that you enjoyed the video Paul and good luck with your layout.
Thanks for this video Charlie really enjoyed your presentation. Thanks. G
Thanks Graham I’m so pleased that you enjoyed it
Very enjoyable. Good to see some loco action.
Thanks Tony I’m so pleased that you enjoyed it
You have some beautiful locos Charlie.
Thanks Philip, I have some dogs too!
I also just got trains running properly on my layout too! It's such a relief to see that first one go round with no issues- especially when you're filming it lol!
Well it appears that we have both got there in the end. But it is such a relief.
Hi Charlie - thanks for sharing all your locos and the history behind why you have them etc. Very enjoyable video to watch whilst on my lunch break from work. Great idea around the spreadsheet info to keep track of each loco - something I should do myself for the locos on Blackwood. Cheers Euan
Glad that you enjoyed it Euan.
Hi Terry, well you’ve obviously found a good workaround, good for you. Regards Charlie
I just hope that one day you will the opertunity to build that Layout Russell.
What a Fantastic collection you have (even though that was a small selection) layout look great Charlie, great view from the viaduct ☺
Thanks Justin, I’m so pleased that you found it interesting
It’s lovely to hear your story Charlie. Best Wishes, Nigel.
I'm so pleased that you enjoyed the video Nigel. Stay safe, regards Charlie
Hi Charlie, plenty of variety has made this a very interesting video. Cheers Greg
Thanks Greg, I’m very pleased that you found it interesting.
I am always of the belief that if you can use a spreadsheet to help with something in your life you should.
Every hobby I have has various catalog spreadsheets to catalog my collection and like you what needs doing on that collection.
So I’m not going mad after all. Regards Charlie
Thanks for the info Stuart.
This was a fantastic video! Thaks for giving us a bit of back ground on your journey and career.
You’re welcome Vince.
I'm so pleased that you enjoyed the video The Hobbyist Den. Stay safe, regards Charlie
Those spreadsheets are an awesome idea. I've a similar one for brainstorming ideas in each part of the layout to help me keep track of plans before I forget them. Lovely video. I love the 125s. Remind me of my trips to "town" (London) with my old man (along with Network South East livery).
I'm so pleased that you enjoyed the video robotmonkey. Stay safe, regards Charlie
What a great comment ash. I to remember the diesels in Penzance, such good times.
Brilliant video thanks for showing us what your stock is and the sound locos you have. 🤪
I’m so pleased that you enjoyed it David.
Great back story Don. Many thanks.
what a great video..and some superb angles and views of your layout..great stuff!
I'm so pleased that you enjoyed the video skyfall 23. Stay safe, regards Charlie
Great to see some running Charlie, all the best...Chris
Thanks Chris. Regards Charlie
Thanks Charlie that made time fly 🌈😷🇬🇧
I'm so pleased that you enjoyed the video Lee. Stay safe, regards Charlie
Charlie, you are the real thing for sure....
You’re too kind David. Regards Charlie
Enjoyed that Charlie no complicated electronics and other stuff 😂😂😂😂❤️
I'm so pleased that you enjoyed the video Robert. Stay safe, regards Charlie
Hi Charlie , I love watching your films , I've always liked model railways and just recently I got the bug again but when I mentioned it to the Wife she said I could have a pair of cats , Love the cats, though they put fur all over the house and its get on my records ( another interest ) ,
I love the imagery in this video.
Keep up the Great work
Ade
I’m so pleased that you enjoyed it Ade.
Enjoyed the video as always Charlie - you've clearly built up a good collection over the years.
Thanks DL, I’m so pleased that you enjoyed it.
Class 108 you dips tick! Love it, entertaining as always, cheers Charlie stay safe 😎
I'm so pleased that you enjoyed the video Chris. Stay safe, regards Charlie
Another interesting video, thank you Charlie. I also have a couple of locos that insist on only running one way round the layout.
Life just isn’t fair Chris.
Hi Charlie always look forward to your videos. Think the spreadsheet is a great idea. Like you my model railway journey started with the Bachmann class 25.
I'm so pleased that you enjoyed the video Ambleton Layout. Stay safe, regards Charlie
Hi Charlie,
To quote the great Michael Caine "did you know " the first class coaches on the HSTs were always at the London bound end of the train. "Not a lot of people know that ".
Great vlog as usual.
Andy Culham.
I certainly did Andrew.
Another great video Charlie. I only found your site about 3 weeks ago and I use a spread sheet to make a note of the subject in the video, I haven't started my layout yet but when I do and want to, say ballast track I can do a sort and all the videos covering ballasting track will be listed. Bill
That's a great idea Bill. Regards Charlie.
single red tail light on the Warship at 14:43 - nice :)
I'm so pleased that you enjoyed the video Roaming Adhocrat. Warships are lovely!
Stay safe, regards Charlie
Nice one Charlie. I personally love steam engines but you can’t beat old diesels too. 👍👍
Thanks SJ, I’m so pleased that you found my diesels interesting.
Thanks again for another lovely honest video ! The class 22 had me in stitches.
I have a class 142 that refused to travel anti clockwise without derailing on the first corner.
After researching online i decided to strip my track clean and Re lay it ballast and all. Only to find the problem was a the coupling( timely mistake there)
I think the hobby is about the little problems you get to overcome.
(That class also known for it’s uncomfortable quirk)
I sadly avoid railway magazines as they tend to only feature layouts they seem to be prototypical of certain eras.
Keep uploading love it
What a heart warming comment Selby Model Railway.
I normally use ESU chips and just pay the price!
Stay safe. Regards Charlie
Great show. When you were sat face on i was expecting to see sooty pop up. LOL. Very interesting thank you.
I’m so pleased that you enjoyed it Terry.
Great video as always! The green Pullman cars I think were the Bulmers Cider train
The Pullman cars were named after the wives of the restoration team.
great story Charlie
Thanks Colin.
14:25 I could see the sweat jumping from the driver as he approached those go-nowhere points!
Now that would be taking modelling too far.
Give me time Thomas!
Great video charlie -the layout is developing nicely
I'm so pleased that you enjoyed the video mike.
Stay safe, regards Charlie
Just the one word from me Charlie " Wonderful ".
You’re too kind Rodd.
What a heartwarmimg comment Terry. Stay safe, regards Charlie
Love your locos charlie you have some really awesome ones
Thanks Adam.
Early to a Chadwick video, this makes me happy
Great content as usual, Thank you
Glad you enjoyed it Gabe.
Why didn't then just add more sound-cladding for the HST guards, rather than re-organise the whole configuration?
Im so pleased that you enjoyed my update Clint.
I think that I was the power of the unions.
Now I just do the occasional trip into London on the Chiltern line, and I must admit I have started noticing the engines in recent months, or had until…
Yes, well, thanks for the tour of your collection, and so good to see trains going round your tracks. Nice one Charlie.
So pleased that you enjoyed the video. I remember eating overpriced cheese sandwiches with curly edges. They were dreadful.
Well I had chicken curry with saffron rice - tasty!
Most interesting video Charlie, I enjoyed the story of yor start in Model Railways.
I'm so pleased that you enjoyed the video John B. Stay safe, regards Charlie
Brilliant as always! Thanks Charlie! :)
Thanks Peter.
Another great update and a cracking way start to the weekend. loved seeing your fleet, especially the 125, phenomenal sound quality and like the differences in speakers. Like how you manage your stock and the to do list on each, may have to nick that idea for my fleet.
I'm so pleased that you enjoyed the video Alaric. Stay safe, regards Charlie
As we are in stage 4 lockdown here in Melbourne and basically can't go out of the house, I've been catching up on old videos.
I can't believe I have more Locos than you! Most of them are decades old and not really suited to my main area of interest and I'm actually selling
them off slowly to help fund newer more suitable ones.
Luckily I haven't really been bitten by the sound bug, I only have 1 ESU diesel and 3 TTS steam locos but with iPhone speakers instead of the standard ones.
Nice to see and hear some of your fleet trundling around - Cheers
Stay safe during your lockdown Gerry. I've only just noticed what a huge population Melbourne has! Happy modelling mate.
awesome video i really enjoyed it! those 2 0-4-0s are clearly the best locos ive ever seen!! awesome stories, keep it up ill loo forward to more videos!
Thanks Loco Force.
Thanks for the great comment Vinny
Nice review of your loco fleet Charlie! Thanks for sharing. Cheers Onno.
Glad you enjoyed it Onno.
I have in my tools a little paint stirrer .Its batterie operated and its a very handy little tool I would recommend one . By the way another great film well done
I’m so pleased that you enjoyed it Paul. And thanks for the tip on the paint stirrer too.
Hi Charlie nice collection of locos , I love the passion that comes out on your videos . Keep it coming mate 🍻🍻👍🏻
I'm so pleased that you enjoyed the video Todd. Stay safe, regards Charlie
Brilliant stuff as always ! Really makes my Friday 😁
I'm so pleased that you enjoyed the video Pjanic. Stay safe, regards Charlie
Afternoon Charlie loved the video trains running at Chadwick lovely hst I think everyone loves them young and old I have 1in GNER and 2 GWR the new green livery and 1in Sir Kenneth Grange I have yet to add sound but they are dcc fitted and my GNER is tts sound fitted don't you just love that valenta engine when she starts up.I bet when you first saw that class 25 with sound back then was amazing
Best wishes Kev
Hi Kev, yes sounds bring a whole new dynamic to railway modelling. Regards Charlie
Being a Western fan it's nice to see other eras represented other than the grouping era, if or when I get the space I would like to represent a mixture of late crest locomotives and early TOPS, a thoroughly good video Charlie
Thanks Thomas I’m so pleased that you enjoyed it. Regards Charlie
Good evening Charlie,
I have very much appreciated your advice, but, everyone makes their choices and I’ve decided to go with Marklin Trix HO C Track.
It’s simply because I just don’t understand electrical circuits and this appears to do what I want.
If it’s alright though, I’d still like to ‘follow you’ because you’re a true mine of information and as such I’ll always learn something.
Yours sincerely,
ross
Hi Ross, I’m so pleased that you find the information useful. Regards Charlie.
Really enjoyed seeing all your loco’s,yep my favourite is the class 52 as well. I’ve got a Western Champion in Green also Heljan, followed closely by the Midland Blue Pullman. Cheers
I’m so pleased that you enjoyed it David. I’m actually after the Bachman reverse livery Pullman.
