  • Who on Earth are the Albanians: the enigmatic, mostly Islamic peoples of the Balkans? Today we're going to delve into some of the history of Albania and the Albanians in depth, including their origin, the country itself, the Greater Albania region and a global diaspora that easily rivals that of the Armenians, Greeks and others in terms of size and impact.
Please let me know your thoughts on the Albanian nation and their emergence over the centuries. Sorry about the gap guys, still getting over the flu, but I'm pushing through! Thanks for watching!

I’m in Albania now. Their loyalty is much more tied to their nationality and language than to any religion. This country is also probably the most ecumenical society on the planet.

@@Johnny-pk3iq The hypothesis of the "Balkan Indo-European" continuum posits a common period of prehistoric coexistence of several Indo-European dialects in the Balkans prior to 2000 BC. To this group would belong Albanian, Ancient Greek, Armenian, Phrygian, fragmentary attested languages such as Macedonian, Thracian, or Illyrian, and the relatively well-attested Messapic in Southern Italy. The common features of this group appear at the phonological, morphological, and lexical levels, presumably resulting from the contact between the various languages. The concept of this linguistic group is explained as a kind of language league of the Bronze Age (a specific areal-linguistics phenomenon), although it also consisted of languages that were related to each other.[61] A common prestage posterior to PIE comprising Albanian, Greek, and Armenian, is considered as a possible scenario. In this light, due to the larger number of possible shared innovations between Greek and Armenian, it appears reasonable to assume, at least tentatively, that Albanian was the first Balkan IE language to branch off. This split and the following ones were perhaps very close in time, allowing only a narrow time frame for shared innovations.[62]

That’s probably thanks to Marxism destroying their religion and turning them all into atheists. But I do believe many of the traditionalist Albanians want to bring Islamic values back to their country, while the liberal Albanians want to keep atheism.

I'm Muslim but I don't feel proud or happy if someone knows me as a Muslim instead of being known as Albanian. Most of Albanians are Muslims but only like 30% of Muslims are Islam practicants the others they say they are Muslims but they don't even go to Mosque or Church(christians who say they are christians), here in Albanian people the religion is more like 'Pagan style' people say they are Muslim/Christian but not practicants and everyone of them puts the country first then the religion.

Most countries think of Albanians as wild and rough people. The truth is, it’s hard to stay soft when most of the countries around you try to dissprove your history and your existence. Our language is unique, we share a lot of elements of our culture with some of the ancient tribes of Illyria. Although the documentation is limitied, there is enough evidence to support our presence on the region of balkans since the b.c ages. It is infuriating when a nation of slavic roots, which has absolutely nothing to do with our people whatsoever, tries to claim our land as their own. We appear as wild and rough, because we have been forced to act that way, in order to protect what’s left and rightfully ours of our currently severly mutilated country.

Agent FoK and where is your proof? You know, there is no chance that an entire population moved inside Byzantine empire without somebody writing about it. On the other hand, there are a lot of documents for slav migration. Albanians are descendants of the Illyrians, or atleast the language is, because illyrians dont exist anymore because there is no dna clean people in the Balkans today. You should also check for pileus hat, that hat can be seen in old greek statues, but the only people that wear it are albanians.

It is not fair to compare them with Greece that Europeans countries helped it a lot. By the time Albanians are hard-workers deserve respect. When you respect them it is sure that they will do the same to you. Tourism is growing with high rate last 3 years and it is a cheap destination for holidays.

Albanians are SPIRITUAL PAGANS who believe in God without the need of religions. No matter how much Albanians say I'm a Muslim or a Christian or whatever, they will drop any religion the moment it goes against their traditions and their superstitions. Everything that Albanians do during the day, they unconsciously follow all pagan way of behaving or acting upon something.
They will follow the Moon if they want to cut their hair, they will protect a snake on the walls of the house as it is "the protector of the house", will try not to walk under the trees at night" because you might step on a baby Genie", will not look outside when the trees prey to God, otherwise your head will swallow and you might never get it inside from the window", " will not comb their hair at a certain timings and moments because it is bad".
Oh, I can keep you all day with little things like this. No matter how much we try to ignore these habits, they still seem to keep us on our toes. There is nothing religious( Abrahamic religions) about these beliefs.
This is the big reason why Albanians are so tolerant towards any religion. We celebrate Eid, we fast as well, but we celebrate Christmas too, Easter as well, and we find nothing wrong getting on top of the Mountain to the Saint Antony's church in Lac town, even though we are Muslims. We believe there is one God for all people of the world and we can make this connection with Him, without the need of an Imam or a Priest.
This is the reason why Orthodox Churches of Greece and Serbia along with Ottomans, prohibited and cursed the Albanian language to be written and even spoken.
The Romans claimed that Albanians were never fully Christians, Turks claimed Albanians were never fully Muslims. By simply being Albanian, it means a threat to organised religions such as Christianity or Islam. Those Albanians who were fully Christians or Muslims are assimilated into populations of Greece, Serbia, Montenegro and Bosnia. The true Albanian has stayed loyal to its ancestors religion, the Paganism.
I have respect for all religions, I don't hate anyone of them. I have fasted, celebrated Eid, but I have prayed to Church too.
In the end, aren't they all coming from one person( Abraham)and believing on each other' s Prophet's ?

I spent three weeks in Albania, which I thoroughly enjoyed. They are an interesting people to say the least, and have a very unique history. My longest stays were in Tirana and Shkoder, so those are the two cities I know the most about personally. I visited Muslim mosques, Catholic and Orthodox churches, and also Bektashi tekkes. And one thing that really struck me is just how nominally religious Albanians are. The four faiths (Bektashi branches from Sufi-Shi'ite Islam but diverges greatly from Sunnism) intermarry among each other, and seem to all be animated by a common Albanian identity where Albanians are Shqiptarët before anything else, religion being strictly personal. I saw so few religious places of worship in such large cities, clearly a hold-over from Communism but also what I got to know as a peculiar characteristic of Albanian history even before that with a quite relaxed approach to religion....The language is very unique and in no other country where I spent so much time had I absorbed so little of the language; it can be difficult and hard to master, but this fact speaks to just how unique it is, occupying its own branch of the Indo-European language. I do lend some credence to the Illyrian theory and see some links also to the Thracians, but perhaps there were also links to other pre-Slavic peoples of the Balkans, such as the Dacians?

Not bad indeed. However, I think the title of the video " Europe's Original White Muslims" is a little misleading for the fact that Albanians are really not 'real' Muslims but rather former Albanian Christians (and pagans before Christianity reached the Balkans) who converted to Islam some years after the occupation of the Balkans by the Ottoman Turka simply oit of necessity (primarily to avoid the Ottomans possesing their women if they remained Christian - and they were a proud honor-based clan society like the Scotish Highlanders, but also in order to avlind heavy taxes that the Ottams imposed on Christian population, as well as outnof opportunistic reasons). In other words, Albanians have historically been known to never give up on their Albanian ode toty and replace ot with the Ottoman one (which included Islam)...They never really succbed to the Ottomans and never gabe up their Albanianess to embrace Ottoman identity, and used various methods to preserve theor identity (inuding the fake ismamization - they would publically declare themselves Muslima bud i reality and in their hearts they never really embraced Ottoman culture (including Islam). In faft they always considered the Ottoman the occupier. This is even reflected i many Albanian traditional sayings like "Turku do zor" (The Thrks only u deratan the language of force), " As e mira e turkut as sherri i shkjaut", etc etc. This is something that many non-Albanian- friendly Serbs either are not aware of (still naively thinking that Albanians are a muslim people) or ignore this fact on purpose in order to continue with their propaganda portraying Albanians as people who were just poor and illiterate but dangerous asian muslim people who came to the Bakkans and lived on tje mercy of Serbs, only to raise to power by serving every occupier of the Balkns (incmuding the Ottomans) and raising to power that allowed them to i crease their polulation, overpopulate Kosovo (a cradel.of Serbianism) and put the Serbs in a servamt position under the Ottomans. Of course, Albanian national.romantics also have a version of history charged with nationalist romanticism (the Albanian one).....
Majority of the so called "muslim" Albanians (both in Kosovo and Albania) are actually only nominally muslim as their primary and most important ide toty os Albanian. aThis is why I believe

Hoxha has left a positive print into out culture. Even if most families consider themselves Muslim or Orthodox, they don't really practice it, it's just the religion of their grandfathers. The article even brought up one of the shield designs used by elite legionaries from the late roman empire at the time of Diocletian. I think that specific legionaries were called Herculiani Juniores (Rookie Herculians) and wielded an oval shield with a yellow-golden border, a red background and a one-headed black eagle in the centre, implying that Albania was pretty much clinging to its past as a former roman province and a former major roman recruitment base along with the rest of Dalmatia, trying to remember its origins and implicitly remaining loyal to Rome, intially Constantinople and later, after the Ottoman invasion, to the Vatican Church.

There are sooooooooooooo many mistakes in this video its actually unreal.
The name "Albania" is not derived from Latin, Albania is the latinized VERSION of the actual native Albanian name "Arberi" "Arberia"- Latinized Albania.
As seen by the map Ptolemy drew mentioning the tribe of the Albani in central Albania and other toponyms throughout Illyria that had the "Arb" part in its name like the dalmatian island "Arbona" or the "Abri" tribe - true name is "Arbi" but the Greeks did a wrong translation of the name.
Shqiperia is mentioned for the first time in the 13th century but it replaced "Arberia" at the 17th-18th centuries. Its theorised by various scholars that it derives either from "Shqiptoj" which means "To speak clearly" or the more folk etymology of "Land of the Eagles" which in Albanian the word for Eagle is "Shqiponje"
Also the genetic of the Albanians is NOT l2a.
Its actually J2b2-l283 which is associated with the Illyrian colonization of the Dinaric Alps which also correlates to the Dinaric Race in northern Albania which is over 50%.
The biggest haplogroup is E-V13 neolithic farmer haplogroup that entered the Balkans at around 6000BC with its mutation happening in Western Anatolia and its distribution started in the Balkans.
E-V13 is seen alot in Albanians but also Greeks due to the fact when Illyrians and Myceneans came, they mixed alot with the native populations of the Balkans and gave birth to the Albanians and Greeks which is why J2b2-l283 in Albanians is just 20% but E-V13 is 35% and those in Kosovo have 45% and Greeks at around 30-35% in certain regions, but E-V13 is also seen in South Italy which ALSO correlates with the Illyrian and Greek colonization of South Italy.
Illyrians colonized Apulia as seen by the Messapic inscriptions and the city of Brundisium/Brindisi for example which has an Albanian etymology, same with Dalmatia and the ancient name of Kosovo "Dardania" also being of Albanian etymology.
Also your map of the Illyrian language is super wrong, its about x4 times smaller than the actual extent of the language was.
Illyrian was spoken from Pannonia to the north, till Epirus to the south, Apulia to the west and Dardania to the east and mind you, the PROPER Illyrians as mentioned by the Ancient Greeks lived in Albania, Montenegro and a part of Kosovo, so Albanian might be the proper Illyrian descendant but Illyrian had numerous dialects like Messapic and Dardanian.
Btw, Albanian is not theorised to be related to Balto-Slavic or Greek.
The only theory out there about Albanian is the Paleo Balkan continuity of Illyrian, Thracian or Dacian, most belivable theory is the Illyrian one, not just geographiclly but also alot of toponyms in ancient Illyria and Messapic are related to Albanian so this itself disproves the Thracian or Dacian continuity because Thracians or Dacians never lived in Italy.
Albanian, Balto-Slavic and Greek are related but not directly, they all come from Proto Indo European but were divided in about 2000BC.
Albanian & Greek are the last surviving Paleo Balkan languages

@ 3:27 "The three haplogroups most strongly associated with Albanian people are E-V13, R1b and J-M172". E-V13 is verified in many tests with over 30% among albanians, which are clearly a peak in nowadays kosovo (ancient Dardania). Dardania has a meaning even today in albania (dardh/pear) and was mostlikly an illyrian tribe. And in general from genetics and linguistics facts albanians have a lot in common with italians, there are some italian historians who consider italians also as illyrians.

Thank you @Masaman for the time and effort to produce this video! A video of 11 minutes can of course simply never manage to mention the endless crucial aspects of one nation's/country's history, but you have managed to list up some important of them, including those which are disputed. As an Albanian I can only be thankful to anyone who takes the time and the energy to produce some informative material on my people without prejudice (be it positive or negative!)!
P.S. the comment section below shows the very ugly side of the global opinion's exchange...

Albania was a most closed country in the World !
They have for first time in their lifes stepped out of a country in 1991 !
Enver Hodgia was asked why do you keep them closed and very detained by Police ?
      He said :
If I let them out they'll ruine all Europe , they like someones elses objects , but dont give their !
Since 1991 they made overpopulation in Kosove !
All serbians were tortured and expeled to Belgrade and now Kosovo is theirs !
It is not for the good !
