There is even a super rare one out there known as a Syncro, it had a fantastic 4WD system in it, probably the same as what was used in the VW Iltis which was a military vehicle, we even made licensed Iltis's here in Canada at a Bombardier plant for the Canadian Armed Forces. I watched in amazement one day how a Volkswagen Beetle would go anywhere. Well that’s a slight exaggeration but honestly those little things are incredibly capable off-road.
Observation & suggestion. It seems most vehicles have recovery points on the left or right sides in the front and some rear also and when connected to the towing vehicle in the center while pulling it tends to pull the towed vehicle to the side and they try to steer to compensate and it all goes bad especially if the road drops off on the side. My suggestion, add tow points to both sides of the tow vehicle like maybe adding hitch receivers so you could move the pintal hook where needed. I don't know what do you think Matt.
If I could have ever imagined the person that would have been driving the VW bus in 2023, that gentleman is it! I mean no offense, I'm just saying he is exactly the person I expected!
To correct Matt's description, the water-cooled Vanagon went right to the end of the '80s. The very early '80s Vanagons were air-cooled. I owned one of those, an air-cooled 1982. The water-cooled one in the video would be 1983 or newer.

Early model VW vans were actually one of the most off road capable vehicles of its time due to its rear engine and rear wheel drive configuration. Also had good ground clearance
Matt - you need to contact Powermaster to get an alternator that makes high current at idle. @Devin Vanderhoof had them design one specifically for his race car and covered it in a video.

After that, I think VW had a front-wheel-drive van, and after that I think they had a Chrysler minivan they rebadged with their name. Great video!

I hope some time they'll record those customers reactions.

I think his older sons are over 15, but agreed. I think Matt's shown from the start of the channel he prides himself on teaching not just doing. When people are young it's important to teach them "why" they do something not just to do. Plus all the extra hands help out on jobs lol.
There's this time I was riding my bike at some road and I approached this railway crossing. There was a Toyota Corolla that had stopped in front so I decided to just overtake since there was no train crossing at the time. When I took a glance at the driver I was awed,a small boy probably at an age of eight to ten years old was behind the wheel. An elderly man probably his father was sat at the passenger seat and a woman and some girls were sat in the rear seat (wondering how I was able to see all that at a glance). The point is this, teach your kids to do what you do. Be their first driving/riding instructor.
With the prevalence and popularity of side-by-side vehicles with younger and younger people allowed to operate them, it's becoming extremely common in many areas to see a fifteen-year-old with ten years or more of offroad driving experience.
What Rhett doesn't know is that power steering has a different ratio and smaller steering wheel so you have less leverage. That's why it is so hard to steer power steering with no power. Same thing with power brakes.
I drove VW buses my whole life. Ive taken them laces 4x4 tricks won't go. Ive taken them places that freaked people out, like the top of Mt Antelope back in 2003 and 2015
Always wondered if there were any Vanagon recoveries out there. We call them the "T3" in europe. The Transporter 3. That sounded like a Diesel one, probably an early rabbit style engine.
Sorry to correct you. The early vw bus came with air-cooled engine at the back. As several of the vw at that time, beatle, variant. The liquid cooled has the engine in the front. From 1990 the T4 has the liquid cooled front engine.
Will heavy D and his crew be making an appearance.? When your two crews did that cliff side recovery that was awesome to watch. They would make some good judges and commentary.
Great job guys!! That VW bus was pushing it's luck on a dry road... Not a good idea in the mud! Looks like Rhett got some ojt from Dad!! Good job "young'n" LOL!!
Rhett? I always heard it as Red, and thought why would they only use his nickname when calling everyone else with their real names. Well, now it makes all sense.
OMG, I've been wondering when I'd see a fellow Vanagon owner get rescued on your or Rory's channel... and it finally happened!😁😁 (Customer probably wished he had a Syncro version at that moment.😆🤪)
ปีที่แล้ว +1
Same here. My guess was that Syncros would never need a rescue. 😀 This 2WD one is a proof.
I am guessing the sone of the judges will be at key areas along the trail to judge particular segments. More judges means more segments can be judged instead of shuttling judges ahead to the next event. Their vehicles would have to arrive before the wreckers which may slow things down and drag the whole event out.
Don't underestimate the capabilities of the VW Transporter. I drove a 71 VW Transporter up and down Baja and all the way through Mexico to Guatemala, Belize and back to San Diego. I went through deserts, mountains, rain forests and swamps on mostly unpaved roads.
Are any of your judges Nationally Certified Tow Operators? I hope so. I did a stint driving a dynamic and a roll back. I am certified!! Can't wait to see these Olympics!!
Considering you said "dark and rainy" while the Heavy Wrecker's welder was in the shot, you might want to consider building a water-proof enclosure for it. It'll also keep the mud off too.
I have a 7.3 Powerstroke shuttle bus that I take off road sometimes and as long as you know what you're doing it's surprisingly capable but people always look at me like they're expecting me to get stuck at any moment... all you need is tire speed baby!
I towed one of those when I still was driving rollbacks. Husband and wife going on a cross country trip. Those are pretty suite for a compact camper if it’s just you and your significant other.
Who's coming to the wrecker games? www.mattsoffroadadventures.com
actually, even though vanagans had multiple engines, the only wasserboxer (german designation) they had was the 1.9, the rest were air cooled.

Ever met a farmer's kid on a combine? Grew up with it
Excellent job guys. If I ever get my bay window to run that far...or maybe you could drag it part of the way.😀
What Rhett doesn't know is that power steering has a different ratio and smaller steering wheel so you have less leverage.
That snow and desert looks unreal cheers from OZ.
The syncro 4x4 version of this van had fully locking front and rear diffs from factory. Pretty capable!
Not all of them had both lockers, mostly they had just rear locker if any. Still they did an amazing job offroad.
Great video and great job with the recovering and God bless from GA and stay safe
Sorry to correct you. The early vw bus came with air-cooled engine at the back. As several of the vw at that time, beatle, variant. The liquid cooled has the engine in the front. From 1990 the T4 has the liquid cooled front engine.
If making corrections it helps to be correct ;) t3's from 1983 onwards were rear engined, yet liquid cooled. T4 didn't come along til 1990
The one being rescued was either a diesel or a 'wasserboxer' as it has the extra cooling intake above the front bumper

I've known not to exactly on the point. Counted on you to know exact and put it here.
@@ivovanzon164 Diesel ... by the sound.
Wow, the picture @ 12:43, but I can see the pressure on to get it finished and all of this event planning, Huge!
Rhett's getting more and more comfortable with the camera. He and Jefe make a good team.
Jefe is the most annoying one there, and that's saying something with a guy like Tom Tom around lol.
Rhett or Rad?
@@franksmith8210 enjoy them both
Rhett? I always heard it as Red, and thought why would they only use his nickname when calling everyone else with their real names. Well, now it makes all sense.
I agree. Rhett's really becoming a valuable member of the team.
Great recoveries. That VW was in great shape
This has got to be the greatest thing on TH-cam. Real people keepin' it real.
Rhett and Jefe are the A TEAM 😂🤣
OMG, I've been wondering when I'd see a fellow Vanagon owner get rescued on your or Rory's channel... and it finally happened!😁😁 (Customer probably wished he had a Syncro version at that moment.😆🤪)
Same here. My guess was that Syncros would never need a rescue. 😀 This 2WD one is a proof.
I’ve also wondered when I’d see a fellow Vanagon owner get into some trouble (as I have many times myself 😂) and need MORR to come to the rescue!
Good work all around.👍
... isn't that a few too many judges for one event? 🤣
But maybe I'm missing a key peice of information
Please share with us when you discover the information
There’s more that’s curious

Matt really punted that first weather report 😂
I have a 7.3 Powerstroke shuttle bus that I take off road sometimes and as long as you know what you're doing it's surprisingly capable but people always look at me like they're expecting me to get stuck at any moment... all you need is tire speed baby!
Brit great job , Matt and Tom Tom good job guys
Good MORRning everybody and thumbs UP to Matt and crew! 🥳🥸
What's a homie?
@Bobby Knight you mean hometown?
Afternoon here though.

I towed one of those when I still was driving rollbacks. Husband and wife going on a cross country trip. Those are pretty suite for a compact camper if it’s just you and your significant other.
You know it's going to be an expensive clutch repair when you see the "Dual Clutch Transmission" sticker.
Hopefully honda will warranty it if it's actually brand new.
