TCGPlayer is a vital source to tracking your Pokemon Card Collection. It has a ton of data and tools that helps business owners and Pokemon Card Collectors make the best decisions when it comes to spending their money. However, TCGPlayer also has some severe flaws.
In today's video, we take a look at some of those flaws and how to navigate through them on your Pokemon Card journey. The thing I don’t like about TCGplayer is that people will blindly buy a “NM” card and only go off of a stock photo with no idea what the actual condition of the card is. With eBay most sellers post decent pictures for seeing condition. You also can’t go off of “NM” sold listings for prices because some cards are listed NM but have whitening and scratches all over.
i agree reputable sellers are pretty good with it, but on a higher value card i like to see pics on ebay
You can easily take that risk with modern on the low to mid prices since there are so many readily available, but yes, ebay is the way to go for older eras and what not.
@@joshuapark4329 yeah I agree low to mid priced cards with reputable sellers you can take that risk but paying $100+ for a card without evening seeing what it looks like is insane to me.

If it is a little whitening in the corners with no scratches that’s still near mint . Remember near mint is a psa 8 I remember selling a card on eBay with really great pictures and the guy complained about a spec of whitening and a print line on the card 😂 he said that I deceived him and gave me a bad review and filed for a refund without even consulting me . He said I put near mint and the card was not near mint . I showed him a psa 9 with a print line on the same card with whitening on two different sides which was worse then what I sent . So sometimes I think buyers expect a psa 10 when they buy singles and don’t realize a near mint card can have whitening and be off center or have print lines . This card was Morty’s conviction from temporal forces when it first came out . Which most of them had a print line going through the gangar. . Every listing I found had one except for one or two at the time . I do agree the card should still be a psa 8 if sold at near mint listing .
The only thing to fight this is to not buy the cards at these prices. The sellers can sell to themselves all they want but that doesn't actually make them money. Unfortunately, human beings are not known for self control.
This, period. The buyer has all the power. If no one buys a scalped ticket or video game console then they get returned to buy at retail price. It's a really simple concept.
People FOMO to much. The market fluctuates and prices WILL go down again. Buy outs for Tag Teams, Supporters, Waifu, Alt Art, Rainbow have all gone up and come down at some point. Some stay higher for longer but for the most part they all become affordable again. Megas have literally gone up and down 5 times since they first started coming out!

It's possible these people are using a bad credit card that will reject payment. But tcgplayer still take that purchase into account bumping up market price.

Bottom line is that people should do their own research, especially if they are buying a $100+ card. This can go both ways too. When I was buying the Metagross alt art last month it was like $4 on TCGplayer and $6-8 on eBay. Now it’s more expensive on TCGplayer. Just separate markets so as a buyer you need to have some awareness.

Danny and people often dont realize/acknowledge that these prices dont reflect people that buy cards but cancel their orders. Also people buy their own stuff to fluff the price then "return" it

The price increases become even wilder compared to foreign counterparts : I just grabbed the Chinese PSA 9 of the Gengar Mimikyu for $19.99 days ago.
Literally why i only collect foreign copies now. Only thing worth actually speccing on us the chase SIRs aside from that im Japanese singles all day. Even then the Greninja just isn't good enough especially when the promo Greninja and Kingdra were revealed shortly after TMs release.
Foreign quality usually better too anyways
So glad you adressed this from TCG Player! I've noticed that a couple of times too recently, certain cards going for sometimes 4x the actual value, only over the course of a couple of weeks...

Maybe if a certain percentage of a card gets sold there could be a price freeze where you can only post cards for that price for a week or so

I "bought out" a couple of cards I love, not to resell but to get the quantity I wanted, some cards I want a 100 copies of and I prefer to get them from TCGplayer as I can but in bulk vs picking cards up at a time.

With TCG buyouts something I notice is the card will be listed at the same inflated price in various conditions (NM LP HP etc)..I wonder if those reflect the actual cards for sale or if it is a loophole that helps inflate the price across the board

I think a percentage cap from market price should be established such as say 20%, then a card with a market price of $100 could only max out at $120 and so on and if it goes up it's truer market

Whether it be market manipulation or not there’s no use winging about spikes in prices now, most of you had the chance to buy these cards at reasonable prices, for example that Gengar/Mimikyu GX was sitting below $50 for ages, you either didn’t love it enough for your collection or you were waiting for it drop to an unrealistic low price.

I don’t trust buying cards I can’t see first.
Always felt like tcgplayer NM was LP at best but with no pictures, even bigger gamble than buying packs hoping for a nice copy.
Here is the thing, I don't think they should hide sales cause that just is being shady and manipulative. What I think they should do is give a marking on the card that they experienced a buyout for this card for X number of time or just say that X card jump X amount the last day

Hi! I want to know if you think crown zenith will ever go up in price.
I’ve never sold on TCG player but I do dabble with selling some of my collection here and there on eBay. I saw that the Giratina Vstar secret rare from crown zenith was selling for like $120 recently on TCG player and was like wow I’ll throw mine up on eBay. I made the mistake of thinking I’d easily sell it for no less than $110 based off the tcg player graph and low and behold my eBay auction ended and it only sold for $88 lol take away eBay fees I really only made out with $75. That was really eye opening for me

Dishonesty. They are banking on the fact that most people believe what they are told is true and correct (spoiler: it's not), and that they won't make a fuss over receiving a card that isn't in the condition they expected/were told.

I am one of these buyers who "buy out". But there is a science to it. You don't just choose random singles, or spiking cards. You use data to track customer spending habits, and cross check that with vendor quantity.
When a card is draining faster than its refilling in stock, the floor goes up, until it hits a tipping point. Typically 1-2 pages of listings before there is a massive increase in the next lowest listing.
Naturally the customer demand is there (as proven from data) so eventually a single customer will buy the next copy. It may drop 10-20% from the new high been set, but that floor will always be far above the old listings.
But before you even buy those few copy's which will raise the floor, you need to source many other retail outlets globally to get yourself a position of these singles, so that when the new floor is set, and your purchases are in transit, you have a position to capitalize on.
Those who just buy out pages without really understanding what they are doing, will not get the outcome they are looking for, instead they just burn money.

Does TCGPLAYER charge the sellers per transaction? If not maybe they should. It may stop these fake purchases for almost double the market price
Buy outs are not bad! People who are originally listing their card wants their card to be bought out. There should be no alert, nothing tcg should do. Everyone is happy except the person that didn’t buy the card at that price. Content creators can make content to alert those that didn’t buy at the old unboughtout price
I think if buyouts happen on all platforms because of demand of a card that is something organic and completely different. But if the card is much cheaper on other sites I feel it’s important for people to know how to observe the market and make better decisions.
