The fact that Skyrim came out in 2011 and is still relevant today and enjoyable to play speaks volumes. Skyrim made a huge impact when it first came out and still manages to draw in attention.

Tbf that has a lot to do with the modding community, which kept the game alive. And of course because of Bethesda, and their strategy to rerelease this game on every new toaster that comes out.

For me, I love botw, but I felt at one point there was a time limit. I was walking around having done all the shrines and side quests basically just looking for koroks lol. I beat the game in around 140 hours after realizing there was nothing much else for me to do. It was an incredible game that was well rounded in all aspects. But you do get to a point where you just have to beat the game.
Whereas with Skyrim I am already a good 300 hours in and have barely touched the main quest at all. There is literally SO MUCH to do that it sucks your life right out from under you (kind of a bad thing for me since I'm a student). It is definitely way more buggy and there is not much diversity in fighting, but if you are looking for a massive world with endless things to do, Skyrim is the game for you.

  • @Scotttjt
    @Scotttjt 7 ปีที่แล้ว +93

I’ve played both for roughly 50 hours apiece, and I gotta say... Skyrim takes it. Don’t get me wrong, they’re both phenomenal games, but for me, the sheer grandeur and epicness of Breath of the Wild’s landscape is surpassed by just how free you are to interact with the world of Skyrim:
You wanna tackle the main quest and be the hero of legend? You can do that. You wanna ignore it completely and be a sellsword or thief? You can do that. You wanna just be a peaceful citizen, only occasionally going on the odd quest? You can do that. With Breath of the Wild, your options are more limited: True, you could skip the main quest if you wanted and you’d still find enough to do to keep you entertained, but your ability to carve out a place for yourself in Hyrule is limited by the fact that, regardless of where you go or what you do, you’re still the hero of legend.
In addition, Zelda’s leveling up system is really... REALLY slow and repetitive. To gain more health and stamina, you have to clear four shrines and collect four spheres in order to increase either by ONE point. So, to make yourself strong enough to tackle the games harder sections, you gotta clear A LOT of shrines consecutively, while occasionally being distracted by the odd minor quest. As beautiful and epic as the game is, the grinding for health and stamina goes a bit too far. Skyrim, on the other hand, is more natural and progressive: You just... do what you wanna do, and your skills and abilities will strengthen depending on which ones you use. Additionally, you’ll receive perk points with every level you increase to, allowing you to devote those to whichever skills you want.
As for art style, it’s almost pointless to compare them; even taking away the fact that these games are 6+ years and a console generation apart... it’s two completely different styles. Skyrim is going for a sharper, more realistic look for its landscapes and characters, while Zelda is more cartoonish with its exaggerated designs and bright colors; it looks vary much like the characters of a medieval tapestry or a fantasy storybook come to life. If I had to choose in this particular regard, though, I guess I’d have to go with Zelda; even ignoring Skyrim’s advancing age, I like BothW’s art design too much to pass it up.

Since I first played this game in 2011 on Xbox it has become a growing tradition of mine to revisit Skyrim every Fall/Winter. There is something comforting about just being in the world and exploring and hearing the music and seeing the landscapes. Most of the time I take the same path but I think the next time I play I will take a new path. Funny enough I've never beat the main campaign. At the end of 2022 I am picking up my old file from the Nintendo Switch Online cloud and planning to finish my Level 40ish Wood Elf. I'm joining the Thieves Guild and taking side quests but really focusing on the main quest so I can finally beat the game proper. Even if I don't finish I'm sure I'll find myself wanting to visit Skyrim next year or sometime in the future. There's so much nostalgia and memories I've had with the game. It was the game that really changed my perspective on open world games. GTA is great yet Skyrim really gets me in that fantasy mentality and reading the books and soaking up the lore never ceases to captivate me.

Virtual Nerd that’s either a lie or evidence of your lack of understanding... I’ve been playing video games for what? 20 years... your “just better” sub point is completely preference but as far as immersive? I remember when weather conditions, day and night cycles, and different topography in video games was ground breaking, revolutionary! Bethesda has been doing what they do best for years and not much has changed and to their credit they’re one of many pioneers HOWEVER... Breath of the Wild is by far more immersive than Skyrim... for example, I’ve found myself on my way to a shrine that took me 10-15 minutes to get to ONLY to be rained out and I had to find a different task to do because it was nearly impossible to get to without freezing or falling to my death... in Skyrim you can traverse the open world and you’ll only feel immersed in the dialogue with NPCs and not the actual world around you... BotW feels the most immersive and every other night the blood moon reminds you of the evil spreading across the world as the red moon spawns more difficult enemies... the shrines in my honest opinion feel disconnected from the world but pays homage to the puzzle like dungeons from the past... that parts being reimagined to fit with BotW world. Again BotW is by far the most immersive RPG to date...

You're the one who don't know what he's talking about. BOTW? Immersive? It's certainly realistic but it's not that immersive compared to Skyrim. All your points are towards a game being realistic but not being immersive, the two are different things.
While realism plays a factor in being immersive, it's not everything when it comes to immersion.
Immersion is when you can feel yourself being inside a game, you can self insert yourself to the character and be the character having the same name and as close to your appearance as possible. Can you self insert yourself to Link and be Link? Possible, but the character is still Link, not you.
In BOTW, you can become Link.
In Skyrim, the Dragonborn IS you.
Not to say that BOTW isn't immersive, it is but not as much as Skyrim.

@@nexus2828 yes you can be link and the world is more immersive due to the better gameplay mechanics. In skyrim I was a cat person.....when I went to third person I wasn't more immersed as a cat named mittens than when I was as an elf named link.

I couldn't agree more. I have had a hard time putting Skyrim down. I absolutely love it. One thing I have been saying for months now is "I wish BOTW had more towns and stuff to do." The only problem I have had with Skyrim is it seems that Lydia can't be resurrected. I tried everything it said to do in several TH-cam videos and it seems she is just gone. Oh well. Still a great game. So glad I got it.

Skyrim for me the game is a master piece! The fact you can play so many play styles be a warrior a mage a theif a assassin a archer and many more! or you can mix it up! A mage warrior a thief mixed with assain skills! So many more so you can play the game over and over with different play styles I've lost count how many different play styles I have played! BOTW done a fantastic job but once you played it I doubt you would start a new game any time soon due to lack of play styles you just have a bow and a sword and I hate the fact weapons break

There is way more to do in Skyrim but Zelda had me smiling the entire time. I’ve been playing Skyrim on Switch and I’m right back again lost and loving it in Skyrim. I think BOTW is a top 5 game for me and I can’t wait for the DLC. Both games give me an excuse to go portable. I play them soo long that I need to share the TV so portable is awesome. Both are great. I'm perfectly ok with them doing open world, they just need to give the player a better reason to explore than just finding new environment and looking for shrines. Korok Seeds is NOT content. Plus, the enemy variety in BotW would work better with a linear Zelda, but this is open world. Reskinning enemies and calling it variety doesn't work here.

I have over 1500 hours on Skyrim all together on multiple different consoles/play throughs and have never even completed the main story line. To me that shows how much this game can take over your mindset and immerse you. You can be who you want and live how you want. There are Npc’s all around that although may not be the most uniquely dialogued , feel like people. The game is buggy/clunky and sometimes hilariously unpolished but it in the end makes it more of a sporadic experience. I myself hate to fast travel in games and choose to avoid it all together. In Zelda although i find the game beautiful and fun , i seem to lack the will to travel because everything comes off as empty and dull. You can walk on a road for 2 hours and see no npc’s and if lucky will see a man with a backpack who doesn’t want to talk to you.Vanilla Skyrim still holds up until this day unlike many games from early 2010’s . Zeldas art style however is unlike anything I’ve played . It is so pretty and smooth that it makes you want to explore when there is nothing much to explore being completely honest. I read comments about BOTW and all i hear about is the amazing “ATTENTION TO DETAIL “ but I myself see zero detail at all. Everything seems lifeless and as if you have seen it before .

Skyrim's over 200 awards is especially impressive because there weren't as many outlets giving GOTY awards back in 2011. However there are other factors of course like competition between games. In 2017 Horizon Zero Dawn grabbed 52 GOTY awards and Mario Odyssey 26 though I don't remember what was Skyrim going against back in 2011. Witcher 3 holds the record with close to 250 awards followed by the last of us which is also close to that number.

+Ryan Wilhite I'll take Skyrim over ZBOTW any day. While ZBOTW is a great game, it's a one and done for me. I have no urge to play it anymore. With Skyrim, the world is still the most immersive world ever in gaming. It's a world that you lose yourself in. From Home ownership to marriage and adoption, I have a stake in Skyrim. If I want to place a bunch of apples on my kitchen table I can. If I want to lay all my collected staff's on the floor I can. Want to sit by the fire and read an open book, you can. Want to build your own home, you can. There's a lot more I could say, but I've said enough. In my opinion Skyrim is the better game overall.

    • @ryanwilhite

WITLESSMASS Yeah I acknowledged the world of Skyrim is much deeper, I just prefer all of the zelda gameplay elements like patterned boss battles and shrine puzzles they put into BOTW more than the rinse and repeat gameplay of the Elder Scrolls series (which I've put about a thousand hours into overall). The next LOZ game should still be open world like BOTW but set in a Hyrule that is bustling with towns and villages full of people who have their own quests for you like the towns in Skyrim.

If this is ANYTHING like Breath Of The Wild, I know I'll love it. BUT....can you play the entire game in third-person mode? I read that you can in other versions. But I'm not sure about this one. First person games make me extremely motion sick. In fact, I was getting sick just watching this video.

Well, it is a Zelda game first. You go to the villages, you complete a main quest, and then you complete a few side quests for a few of the people there. You also complete a few dungeons, er I mean "shrines" by solving puzzles. Then you run around an open field and fight monsters in between. This is just how Zelda has always worked. It's just with this one, they've made the map the size of GTA 5's, and took away the linear gameplay. It's more about exploration than the storyline. I just wish that they gave you a big city to explore, the one we only see in ruins with guardian inhabitants. Would've been a bit nicer. Even without that though, I still love running around in that game, trying to find new shrines or new treasures and a few other things.

I happen to own both games. I got both from the local Pawn Brokers. Breath of the Wild I got preowned in its case, while Skyrim I got as a bonus with Assassin's Creed: The Rebel Collection, because it was in the same case as the latter. The owners of the Pawn Brokers let me have it for no extra cost. Lucky!

I've played Skyrim probably a thousand hours and BOtW 60ish hour. I have much more fun with Skyrim overall. BotW feels too sparse. You have to explore 30 min to pick up an apple. The dungeons are more puzzle than exploration. There's no sense of building up your character with weapons and armor. I don't really understand people who think BotW is a better game. I tend to think they just say that because it has Zelda on the cover.

Skyrim has a way better open world botw may have a huge open world but it doesn't have that much variety and quest and dungeons and skyrim had way more variety and quest and dungeons and way better story and writing lots of fun things to do hyrule was pretty empty af compare to skyrim

    • @TheAbsol7448
      @TheAbsol7448 5 ปีที่แล้ว

The only things I'll give BotW are its world(just Hyrule and not the content. It's absolutely more polished than Skyrim, especially with mountains), style, aesthetics, boss fights(I think), and maybe combat. The Champion's Tunic is also on par or even above Skyrim's outfits. The races are just as cool. I think the Zoras are just as cool as the Argonians(now I kinda want a Zelda that's built just like Skyrim, where you choose a race to play and write your own story).
Skyrim has better characters(Teba is bird dad, though), better music, you can actually craft weapons in armor and make them stronger(could repair weapons in Morrowind), way more outfits, more combat variety, better quests, much more enemy variety, better houses, better traveling NPCs, better towns(except maybe Gerudo Town), and maybe better lore.

Gotta say, going to Skyrim after beating Breath of the Wild, Skyrim looks kinda weak now. In term of how the world is crafted, Zelda is far better, you don't even need the map to know where you need to go...or even better, to find where you WANT to go.
In Skyrim...well, everything looks more or less the same, some trees on the left, some trees on the right. Oh a dungeon!...oh wait...didn't I do this one before? It looks so familiar =')

    • @skollybob

Weak? Compared to the ridiculous, cartoon graphics of Zelda? Lmao the game is awful, the character design is awful, the landscape is awful, the mapping system is a complete joke and I'll stop there coz I'm running out of breath!!! Plus dont forget Skyrim is nearly a decade old. 😁😁

I honestly prefer Skyrim. I have over 3000 hours in 3 different versions combined, I haven’t even beaten BotW because I got so bored with it. I love Zelda, in fact I’ve only played three Elder Scrolls games (Skyrim, Online, and Oblivion which I hated), while I’ve played almost all the Zelda games, but BotW is boring to me compared to other games in the series.

I got BOTW for the Wii U and later for the Switch. Incredible game, but I haven't finished it because there's a part of me that loves completing everything first! Just got my first Elder Scrolls and seriously I'm loving Skyrim a lot, and the fact that everytime you begin again it will be different gets me really into it more and more! Not feeling the need of getting everything but just surviving.
