Brother, keep doing what you are doing! It is obviously meant to be. I look forward to my Bowie from you and am so grateful you agreed to let me commission you to make me one. (It’s Joe from the US, I don’t use my real name here on the YT).
Now this is interesting. Good job!...Can i suggest something. Last part where you start to grind that blade....outreached arms and not in control if you dont mind me saying. Have to get right on top of that stone. Have it almost between your legs where your grind position is above your knees while in a seated position. You need to be in control not the stone in control of you. Have it grind away from you not towards you. Watch the speed....too fast & those things can do serious injury if it lets go. Drain the sump after every grind or half that stone will absorb water, the other half or exposed half will not making an imbalance for the next job.....that wheel will serve you well for many years. Good luck with it........
Can you share the link for part 2 please. Love your work have a much smaller stone that was being used as a doorstop for many years by a freind of mine. He finally gave it to me and now want to restore it
Hello! I came upon this video due to an internet search on how to repair a stone grinding wheel. Have you ever come across a situation where your stone cracked? If so, how did you repair - if you did? I subscribed to your channel as I also am impressed with your metal skills. Thank you for advice, cheers, Mark
Does anybody know how fast this kind of waterstone eats away steel ? My grandfather has one sharpening wheel, but its man powered, and its just painfully slow to sharpen knives. I am just wondering if its worth the effort and the money to make a new base and put an elecric motor.
Hi there do you know where I could get parts the one I have has the smote the original cart but the top that would cover the bearing ? Where the shaft is missing Thanks
ashura izumi This one has cut marks (see the sides of the stones) which tels me its a "newer" one.Probably milled. Realy old ones are hand carved and chiseled. My grandfather had grinding wheel and when i asked him how they were made he answered me by simply saying "With hands and tools. There are no people left who do this anymore" Its kinda sad that such a beatiful craft is dying. By watching this video i am trully inspired to make my own sandstone grinder. And in later conversations with my grandfather he told me that his homevilage had a river where this master craftsmen would often find sandstones. Maybe some cloudy day i will take a hike there. Peace ✌
Nice! You've probably done it by now but it could use dressing, also I haven't seen many wheels (and I've seen 3 on youtube! :) ) of this size used like a normal bench grinder, they usually have the wheel spinning "away" from the operator and the workpiece contacts the top of the wheel, in one case the operator used a lever to push the work against the stone.
I look forward to seeing more! I was mistaken about the video I remembered with the lever, that was a much smaller "carborundum" (silicon carbide) wheel running much faster, good video though, filmed in 1965. th-cam.com/video/Qr4VTCwEfko/w-d-xo.html
Has anyone put a new shaft in the middle of a sandstone wheel on a treadle grinder? If so how did you match up round shaft with the square hole in the stone?
Freerk, the part where you push that metal plate against wheel to grind is too short so I didn't see what happened. Does it grind slowly or fast or do you think it needs to be improved, i.e. it is too dull???
Cool thing, a friend of mine has pretty much the same in a bit smaller size. He wants to give it to me, since he's not using it :D I don't have a belt sander yet, maybe I won't have to Buy or build one if the grinding wheel works good enough.
M Sall sorry for being rude man, sounds to me like you made the right choice. as long as you wire brushed any flakes of rust off before hand like freerk did
Where's the other parts, you've gone a while without other parts to this video. May you please upload the rest of the parts, I wanna see the end result 😁😁😁
Freerk Wieringa Ok thank you, I appreciate you took the time to reply to me, I don't see that often, so I respect you much more than other TH-camrs who don't reply. Thanks Fred you're a heavy metal rockstar 😁 (#BadJoke) you should compete on Forged in Fire, or Forged in fire Knife or Death 😉 anyway enough wasting your time and thanks for the reply 😄
Great vid! Just a tips, when cutting a thread on your lathe, cut a relief groove where you plan to end your thread before the threading operation. Due to the absence of this relief groove at the end, without the flexion of the part, the tips of your tool would have flown away... And do not stick out the part that much from the chuck, do you see the huge deflection when the tips of your tool reach the part ? Cut your thread closer to the chuck or put your tailstock, then you will be making real chips and it will be a lot easier (plus your threads will look a lot cleaner) Not trying to be the asshole critics police here, just giving a tips ;)
Больно мелкий круг купил по зерну Он пригоден не для грубого снятия слоя металла Еще люфт есть. Такое себе приобретение. Еще двигатель напрягается что бы его раскрутить
Ive got one, JUST the stone. I would need to build everything else for it. So this video helped me a lot with ideas for what ive got on hand.
Nothing "light weight" about your projects or your attention to detail. Love it!
That's awesome. I continue to be surprised by your work. Your attention to detail and mechanical skill with your hands is amazing.
thanks, thats what I love to do. it feels "natural"

That wheel is damn huge!! Well done man.
Wonderful! Looking forward to part 2.
Awesome work Freerk, reminded me to fix up the one I've just bought :D
That wheel is a peace of history right there before sanders and grinders we had sand stone wheels and they were revolutionary.
Wow awesome job, and that beast will last you a lifetime, and then some!
You can repair anything. Very talented.
Wow awesome wet grinder Freerk nice find 👌
Cool
Enjoyed
I love when items are refurbished and put back to work that they are meant for when they still have life left in them

Good job buddy, looks like great fun.
thanks! it is, now planning to install an inverter for speed control.
So damn cool, I was just thinking about how no one I watch use any!! Nice project
nice work all ways enjoy your uploads no matter what the project your skill set is vast
duuuude this is awesome. like really cool stuff man
That would be cool to have, especially if it had foot pedals. 👞. Rock on Freerk.
Now that is a beast.
Great video

No, not ready. I can imagine it's fixable with powdered stone mixed with some sort of binding compound /mortar
looks good is that a water grinding stone or dry??
i think water
Niiiiiceee! Oh, this is really cool.
Where did you get your leather wrist things ?

I wish I could be your apprentice... I'd happily work for free with an experienced person like you, but in my country they don't even exist
major wants one like that
Hi there do you know where I could get parts the one I have has the smote the original cart but the top that would cover the bearing ? Where the shaft is missing

Ye Gods - what a monster!!
would anyone happen to know how the grinding wheel is made?

SPE yes, thanks for the tips. I am still examining the proper way to use it. I am. Planning to make another video of my findings.

Here's a video that shows a huge, old wheel being used in that way.
Very good
Do you know how to repair a cracked sharpening stone?
Interesting. I like your job. Is that your work garage?
Has anyone put a new shaft in the middle of a sandstone wheel on a treadle grinder? If so how did you match up round shaft with the square hole in the stone?
It's usually done with a block of wood fitted to the "square" hole in the stone. Not as easy as it sounds. good luck
Freerk, the part where you push that metal plate against wheel to grind is too short so I didn't see what happened. Does it grind slowly or fast or do you think it needs to be improved, i.e. it is too dull???
Harald Bearclaw there will be a part two. I think it still needs allot of work in general .
Cool thing, a friend of mine has pretty much the same in a bit smaller size. He wants to give it to me, since he's not using it :D
I don't have a belt sander yet, maybe I won't have to Buy or build one if the grinding wheel works good enough.
Hey, do you use this much? Couldn't seem to find a video of you using it / what purpose you found for it. Great video, thank you!
Welke laskap gebruik jij ? Ziet er erg praktisch uit ...
Very nice, is it for you, or a customer?
for me. but i am open for options. lol
Does anybody still make large grindstone anymore? If so where can they be purchased?
Norton will custom make any size grindstone for customers, just gotta call them.
what sprey did you put on the stand?
M Sall if you have to ask then you probably don't need to know
the rails outside my house are rusty. i srayed them with some chemichal paint to prevent further rust and i don't know if i used a correct one :(
M Sall sorry for being rude man, sounds to me like you made the right choice. as long as you wire brushed any flakes of rust off before hand like freerk did
Kiwi Bird I used a rustoleum spray. But any decent one will work. It is just a mild barrier for my uses
Where's the other parts, you've gone a while without other parts to this video. May you please upload the rest of the parts, I wanna see the end result 😁😁😁
i am currently very busy. as soon as i have the time i will continue.
Freerk Wieringa Ok thank you, I appreciate you took the time to reply to me, I don't see that often, so I respect you much more than other TH-camrs who don't reply. From where did you get this?
Dan T I got it on a second hand site. It was in a old shed in the middle of nowhere. Never used for 50 years
mag een zandsteen wel zo snel draaien?
gebert jenniskens mogen is een groot woord
pas je op ;)
i wonder why they make such a big wheel?
Great vid!

thanks! i will try it.
I've been checking your channel, I'm also a bladesmith although not on the same level as you, amazing work that you do! You got a new sub'!
About how old is this grinding wheel?
James H around 1890/1910 is my gues
Nice work. Why don't you try to make an axe or tomahawk .
The Best
Needs to be dressed and balanced.
Beautiful stone, way too fast turning speed
the wheel is spinning the wrong way
Камень надо отбалансировать
Больно мелкий круг купил по зерну Он пригоден не для грубого снятия слоя металла Еще люфт есть. Такое себе приобретение. Еще двигатель напрягается что бы его раскрутить
Wheel should turn about30 rpmnot 300!!!
you have way to much speed if that wheel has any imperfections and comes apart your screwed!
I’m fairly certain this is the most hipster thing possible as of the date of this comment.
Its off center
