Helmets off to you !! That looked really difficult. I was in same boat as you. I have a 23 GSA and did the ABR festival Bridgestone Trail on it last year (in the dry) and thought wow this bike can cope with anything. However, the penny has now dropped that as a novice, slimey rutted UK green lanes are on a whole new level for the beast. I have just bought a Fantic XEF250 Trail for this purpose to learn the ropes on. Pick it up start of Feb and off to Mick Extance for some training at the end of this month. Cannot wait. Good luck with your new bike hunting and keep up the great vids 🤟

Let a little air out of the tyres before attempting any off road surfaces in/on any vehicle, you will get more traction and grip as the bottom of the tyre is flat on the surface. Back on the tarmac reinflate the tyres as they will need to roll with the bends in the road. Ask any trial or scrambler rider, they never ride with full inflated tyres. I used to ride a Ossa trial bike with almost flat tyres and it would normally go anywhere. Good video

@thepeakybiker , if you had time and knew where you were trying to travel, sometime another motorcyclist may have filmed the route. This is no criticism of your journey. Other bikers will now use yours to pre navigate their journeys from now on. Even search Google earth maps for a sky down view, I use both when out on the fell trails , either walking or biking.

In WWII they sometimes sent off pilots in their Spitfires to battle with little more than a few takeoffs and landings. The sink or swim mentality. You had the courage and metal to jump in the ring and made it back alive....you got my vote as a road warrior.

Good effort, music and video matey! I started this off road stuff in September this year and bought a managable Scram 411. I started on small tarmace tracks. then progressed to broken concrete tracks.......then to donkey tacks and then mud and filth. I slipped and the bike went down on mud and filth. Note to myself keep the front wheel away from the ridges. I repeat to myself, 'easy twiddle'....and its all good training.

Fair play to you bud you gave it a go, on a fully fuelled GS with your wee legs, it looked real greasy in places too. When it gets chewy and lumpy momentum is the key, which is counter to what your brain is telling you, lighter and lower is definitely easier also less tiring. Trail riding is brilliant fun, especially this time of year... and yup... you are generally never cold out trail riding in winter. Def a good work out.
Having better tyres makes a huge difference in the slop and mud, but there is no getting over the fact these big GS BMWs are big and heavy and take a lot of skill in the slime.

After exactly 2 years I decided to trade my big old R1250 GSA for that very reason, it's a fantastic bike for touring but it is very heavy and lumbering in so many situations, constantly having to manage the weight sucked a lot of the joy out of riding for me, I traded mine in for a much more fun bike which is more than capable of doing road trips, 2024 BMW S1000R, as soon as I left the dealership and hit motorway home I was back in my happy place. I have nothing bad to say about the GSA, for the fans of them they are great, but they aren't for everyone. Just to add my own personal opinion, the big adventure bikes aren't the best choice for off road and aren't necessarily the best for touring, there are much better choices for off roading and lots of capable bikes for touring that are more comfortable and not so high or heavy to manage, summing up it's more of a bike you want rather than a bike you need.

Nice one Peaky. 95% of GS owners wouldn’t dream of taking them on the trails. Amazing touring bikes but not the best off road.
You are a long way towards losing the “novice” status 🙂 You will have so much fun on a smaller bike 🤩

Great little vid peaky but as you said you really need like a 790 Ktm or proper enduro bike for that stuff but I would never take if I had one a bmw 1250 adv bike off road it’s to heavy to big and I wouldn’t want to scratch it or get it covered in shit yes I am one of them 90% that never took them off road I had Ktm 1190 and 2 x 1290’s they were fantastic bikes but I never went off road with them to expensive as well to take the risk anyway take care I hope you are getting by and we’ve turned the corner now just try look forward to this year I wish you well I can’t say about PTSD because I’ve never experienced that and nobody should like you fellas in the forces do when you’ve fought for your country and there’s fk all to help you out afterwards this country is shit for that but best wishes mate take care always watch your videos and Jays you are 2 great characters if only I lived in your area I’d love to ride with you happy new year take care

the bike can do it just fine, it's the pilot - it's always the pilot, you need some skills and i suggest you get a small bike and some seat time so you don't end up with a broken femur or worse

😊 TH-cam makes it look easy, 30ltr fuel half a Ton bike semi off road tyres and probably road pressures.
Then rolls in lighter KTM 🤔 full knobby tyres low pressures and you know your in trouble, great vid Brian I bet you had a real blast, was you blowing out your ass
Did 50-50 tyres on a R1200gs some years ago, had a go at the odd track Rich had been on and realised GS is a Nooo once front goes it's not coming back, and then the tyres were shit on road, be careful swapping bikes remember how good on road the GS is Happy New Year pal.

you did well considering you where on a massive bike full of fuel and with road tyres on but to be honest mucker I give the off roading a wide birth the last thing you want is to seriously damage your bike

Far to big and heavy both those bikes for off roading and green laning ! This is a fact unless you’re a top rider. Never understand these people on these bikes that think they can do what a Enduro bike can do 🤷🏻
Stick to the roads with your over loaded 12 million cc tanks ( My opinion )
