    The cantata BWV 146 predates the BWV 1052 harpsichord concerto by about a decade.

      I think scholars suggest it's more likely that Bach added to the original orchestration. The earliest manuscript for the cantata does indeed predate the earliest manuscript for the concerto, but apparently that's not decisive as to whether the cantata was indeed written first. It seems unlikely that Gardiner wouldn't be aware of this, it seems far too simple a fact for him to overlook.
