  • Steve Rinella - Writer, author, host of MeatEater TV, expert outdoorsman, true conservationist, talented story teller and tons of other complementary traits, sits down with Jimmy and Mark to share some of his “highlight-reel” near-death experiences incurred along the way of this crazy thing we call life. From charging a grizzly (not the other way around) and icy water to icy roads, with a fair bit of humor (you can always laugh about it later if you live to tell the tale) and a whole lot more, this was a fun one you won’t want to miss! We also dive into Steve’s new book, “The MeatEater Guide to Wilderness Skills and Survival” - a must read for any seasoned or budding outdoorsman. This comprehensive book, packed with incredibly useful information gained through first-hand experience and lessons learned the hard way, is designed to get you into the wilderness safely and effectively. Death by selfie, moss myths, mountain lions, food, water, shelter, OCD packing and unpacking, and tons of other great topics - this book might just save your life.

I just….kinda wish it had only been Steve talking while he was telling his stories- it was kind of a wet blanket repeating exactly what he just said as if it needed improved upon. Also, if you’re familiar with how Steve talks, when he pauses, its not so the other person can take over… its to let what he just said sink in before he adds to it… ugh im not trying to be rude… but it was like two nervous fans killing the humor and enjoyment of his stories.

Those bridge stories remind me of one bad trip back to university. Cool fall rainy day, about 6 of us in the car, still cruising at 60 mph we cross a village at low speed and noticed the rain was freezing on the bridge and it was very slippery. So we get back on the highway and up to speed. When we got to the next long bridge, there was one stationary vehicle in our lane and about 100 yards further was a second one stopped in oncoming lane. So I slow down to about 20 mph and start crossing the bridge. Getting to the first car I check my mirror and there's a car coming up behind us fast. So I desperately try to pick up speed to get around the stopped car and just make it past and back in my lane when the car just zipped by us fish tailing. He was using the whole width of the road trying to slow down. An oncoming Suburban separately tried to stop and saw he wasn't going to make it so he drives into the retaining fence to stop as the fish tailing car just misses him. So we make it back unscathed but it could have been so much worse. from then on the police were at every bridge and overpass slowing down the traffic. I was never so glad to make it back to university.

Did you get it yet? It's pretty good. Lots of high level stuff so that it can properly cover such a broad subject. But it also goes into good, valuable detail in areas. I do wish it went into closer detail, but I guess that's what more specialized manuals are for. For example the knots section gives you about 5 good general-use knots and teaches you how to tie them. Then if you wanted to learn more knots, rope types, etc you could get a specialized book for that.

I was hunting moose in an old logging cut, way off the road. I had to take a shit just before dark and l was up on a nole. Had my rifle leaning on a stump about 10 ft away while finishing up my business. All of a sudden l hear sounds of growling. I look up and l see 3 wolves about 60 yards away pacing amongst some tag-alders. Then l to my right l see 2 more maybe 100 yards if that. My pants are at my ankles, l didn't waste any time pulling them up. So l lm cocked and loaded my 30 06 that is...lol; waiting to see what gonna happen. They just paced back and forth amongst the thick branches. It's getting darker by the minute and l have extra ammo in my back pack, so l fill my pockets. I got to get back to my truck which is 45 min. away. I fire a shot in the air to scare them off. Too dark to see, so l put on my head lamp and start walking back to my truck which was the longest walk in my life. Took me over an hour, while kept stopping, listening and looking over my shoulders. Wish l had photos.. sorry. My sister said my new name is... SHIT'S-WITH-WOLVES. 😄

I know I'm late to the party but the coffee reminds me of a story. A lady puts groceries in her back seat and jumps in the front seat. She hears a loud bang and sharp impact on the back of her head. Immediately she grabs the back of her head and feels something cool and damp. She panics and thinks she's been shot. She is scared to remove her hands because her brains might fall out, she starts screaming for help. Then help arrives and inspects the situation. A can of biscuit dough had exploded from her groceries and smacked her in the back of her head, when help arrived she was holding biscuits to the back of her head and was to scared to let go.

I've heard this same story. She hears the loud bang, gets blasted in the back of the head, reaches up and feels this soft gooey content in her hair, on her head near the wound she just received on the back of her head....and yeah, she immediately thought the soft goo at the wound, was her brains coming out her head wound. And apparently she diligently held her brains in, refusing to move her hand even when the EMTs first arrived. But yeah, as the story goes...obviously it was not her brains but actually the biscuit dough from the exploded biscuit can.
But like CampingOutOfDebt88, I also don't know if it was a true story...of just an urban legend. But he's not the only one to hear of this story...as I had heard it too. I grew up in Colorado if that maybe helps explain any auditory connection...

Well he got this pepper plant from a guy and he said it oddly enough had purple peppers on it so while mowing the grass he got close to it and picked one of the peppers and took a bite his mower didn't make it back to the house before he jumped off of it and ran in the basement screaming he had a laundry sink rught inside the door he said water was the nost painful thing but laundry detergent wasnt that bad we googled it and it trurns out it was a Japanese ornamental pepper plant not for consumption

I found a dollar bill while Steelhead fishing with a couple of friends. I went to pick it up only to see a pile of shit by it, so I left it there. Later one of my friends found it, and cleaned it. If it were a bigger bill I would of grabbed it! I did find a $50 dollar bill out camping though!

I had some dude try to board the airplane I was piloting (private jet) with bear spray on his backpack and was angry when I told him he couldn’t take it. It would NOT be a good thing if it discharged at 41000 feet. I know the guys in Alaska carry it, but they can get on the ground pretty quick.

I had a lion cross in front of me and I jumped out barking like a dog, chased it into the woods and heard the most god awful sound coming from up in the canopy! I froze and started running backwards till I was safe! My first thought afterwards was fuck that cat!

I came up on a mountain lion on the Middle Salmon out of Stanley when we ran it at flood stages starting at Boundary Put In. Boat got loose and had to run down the trail along the river and found an elk still bleeding and INSTANTLY had the hair on my neck go crazy and looked up the field (this was after a particularly large fire about 10 years back and a major landslide at Pistol Creek that had cleared out the underbrush and opened up the hill a lot to river right) and saw a BIG cat with blood all over its mouth and paws hunched down and then screamed at us as we ran off the kill and down the trail to luckily jump from the bank to a friends Aire Cat floating by and down to find our lost boat... I will NEVER forget that sound and feeling. I was carrying my Glock 20 but it was all so fast and we just ram off the kill so it likely lost interest and went back to its meal but...

The bear spray stories reminded me of when I was in the police academy. We all had to get sprayed with pepper spray and for extra credit they offered one other cadet and myself the opportunity to get sprayed with bear spray. It ruined my week. Every morning having to shave was the worst. Totally worth it to earn my PT shirt back though.

@@mattthadd4663 Don't worry, it is a frecuent mistake among Spanish speakers, to change a v for a b or vice versa when writing. The problem is that in almost all words, if you change that letter it means something else ...;) but it's funny that Rinella refers to him by his second surname, when the correct thing to do would be to use both or just the first one.

45:15 you guys might be interested in this video th-cam.com/video/js0haocH4-o/w-d-xo.html 21 feet is the general rule for a person with a knife to be able to close the distance faster than you can draw and get shots off. Did a quick google and found the fastest man is around 23mph, and grizzlies are about 34mph. Some basic math puts it at about 35feet for a grizzly to close the distance faster than you can draw
