  • This mower came in and it was nice to have something different for a trouble.
    The owner (my neighbour) said it needed a tune up but it required a lot more than that. Automatic choke explained at 13:00

    Thanks for pointing out that choke thermostat, Bruce! I couldn't figure out why my mower wouldn't start even after cleaning and rebuilding the carburetor, testing the ignition coil, and replacing the spark plug. Crossing my fingers that this is my problem. You have helped me with other mower problems, too, so I just wanted to thank you Sir!

    Someone threw away a mower just like that, I found it at the curb Wednesday, except it was a rear wheel drive with electric start and all kinds of features. It was a top of the line Craftsman built in 2008 by AYP-Husqvarna. Anyway the carburetor was all gummed up and grass was all jammed into the belt area and wheel gears, otherwise the thing was still in near like new condition. I cleaned the carb, washed it and than sold it 3 days later with an ad on craigslist. I got $225 for it. Not bad. It looked brand new when I sold it.
    ......From one mans curb to another mans lawn in 3 day's, it was a really nice mower, but it was a little too big/heavy with the e-start component's for my taste. It cut really, really well though, nice striping, it had that precision plus cutting system with a special expensive blade that goes on those models, probably the most I ever sold a walk behind for, I'm up to 6 walk behinds sold this year so far since mid March and I still have more to go, keep them coming I say.

    I had a similar problem with my Craftsman mower. The bolts that hold the pipe to the engine were loose. Tightened them and decided to check the carb. Small pieces of black which likely came from the gas hose. Mower is 14 years old. cleaned all orfices and put every thing back together. Took clamp off gas hose and gas poured out of the carb. Removed the carb and noticed the float was sitting on bottom of bowl and pin was in the support but not thru the float hole. Ouch. Fixed that and mower runs fine. Really appreciate your videos.

    At first glance, I honestly thought that someone had tried to work on the mower, failed and brought it to you but seeing all the loose parts and no air filter....gosh, are they letting the blade cut the grass or are they using the mower to beat the grass....wow. People treat their cars, mowers badly and then wonder why it doesn't crank or work anymore.

    I just watched a vid of a guy I like following in North Carolina; picked up a Toro and the original owner had tried to "fix" the carb. Ended up stripping a screw, bought a new carb and had not tightened down anything! The video maker also found the new carb has stripped threads for the choke vane thing and the spring for it was missing. He later found the spring when it blew out the side of the engine while he was test running (probably bouncing around under the flywheel). This must be loose carb season.

    I could use a little help troubleshooting a lawn mower that was handed down to me by an older brother. He last used it 6 years ago and from I can see he did not empty to fuel from the tank. Here is was I have done so far to resolve the none starting issue. I have cleaned the gas tank, cleaned out the fuel line, cleaned the carburetor (i wasn't aware of the bolt so I will take that out and give that a good spray), and replaced the spark plug. I tried to spray some gas into the carburetor and start it that way but I don't get anything. It could be it's not getting spark but I don't really have a good way to test that, I tried to pull it in a dark garage with the plug out and connected to the coil but couldn't see a spark. Any advice would be very welcome!
    EDIT: So I checked the intake valve and it's not loose and I also checked the carb. bolt and that is totally clear, I sprayed cleaner in there and it came out all side. I spun the blade by hand on the bottom and there is resistance and I can hear a wheezing sound like when I pull the cord. I also sprayed cleaner in the intake valve tube to see if I could get it to fire again and nothing.

At least, that's how it is here in South Texas. I'm so jealous of you and where you live. I know your leaders are scandalous... but all person on this earth's are. At least you have beautiful lush green forests full of waterfalls, streams, moss, animals and wild edibles to make up for it....our wild food isn't nearly so elegant, unless you're in the hill country here in Texas on the Guadalupe River, which I'm an hour away from, and it breaks my heart. Before I even use any spray cleaner, I run a guitar wire through the parts which require it. I have noticed with my Craftsman mower is that various bolts loosen up and fall away. The red plastic cover broke free of the two screws holding it. Seems that Craftsman should stick with its great line of tools and skip the mowers. Too much trouble that need not happen.

    "tune up" is an abused term for sure.....When ever someone brought a machine in for a "tune up", I always asked "what is wrong with it"....Folks rarely brought in good running machines for a "tune up"....Very interesting indeed...I remember those cross over intake tubes from many years ago as well. The two tiny retaining screws would get loose (like you showed), and sometimes the tube would get loose in the aluminum elbow fitting....I too though of an unbalanced blade/bent crankshaft when you found the sheared screw and loose parts...Was the blade/crank OK? If so, I suspect we/you did not hear the whole story on what happened. Doesn't seem likely that screw would have sheared off on its own...Perhaps someone was messing with the carb and over tightened the screw causing it to shear off...I have only seen one or two of those automatic choke deals, seems kind of hoakey but did work OK. The one I messed with had the governor blade screw backed out of the carb mount as well, but I attributed this to the blade that was bent up like a pretzel....

    Good Job Bruce It does look like the customer takes good care of that mower it looks in great condition. I'M wondering how that bolt got broke you normally don't see that one broke on a briggs. Good thing he didn't run it with out an air filter thats a good way to ruin a good engine pretty fast. I like rear wheel self propel better than front wheel the problem I have with the front wheel drive they dont seem to pull very well the back wheel design seems to push the mower better to me. But I'M a honda fan I like the hrx217 I think they are the best mulching and bagging mower on the market. Did you ever get the balancer we talked about last fall to balance the blades with? Very strange those bolts vibrated loose. Should there have been any lock tight on the threads? Was the blade out of balance? Very lucky the broken bolt came out. My luck I'd have to either drill it or torch it out. Great job. You should get a clip on visor flash light for your baseball cap so you don't have to fumble around with the drop light. Bruce, my Snapper self-propelled, Briggs 725 engine, that I bought in May 2013 broke apart May 2019. My carb mounting bracket bolt sheared off level to block--so I could not unscrew it the way you did; my front throttle bracket split in two; my front mounting base broke up into several pieces, so now the engine leans downward. I believe this was due to poor casting quality. In my 60 years of mowing this has never happened to me. Are other people also encountering these problems?

    • @BrucesShop
      @BrucesShop  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Do you have an easy out? Or a welder yo weld a bolt-stud onto the end of the broken bolt? Just trying to help.

    • @wisconsinmile4670
      @wisconsinmile4670 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BrucesShop Thanks for your prompt response. The main issue is that the front-flange base broke into several pieces, so that there is no support to keep engine level with deck. Briggs customer service did not want to go into details why the metal base simply broke up. I plan on using the engine for parts. A man with your experience would have heard of poor casting quality issues. Thanks anyway
