Okay so basically this whole thing is Homura's fault to begin with. In the end of the original series, she decided it would be safe to tell Kyubey about the 'witch world' because in her mind, they already have a method of gathering energy so they won't investigate. But it turns out because of that they decide that that sounds like a more efficient way of gathering energy but because of the "law of cycles" (Madoka) they can't turn magical girls into witches. However because Homura always refers to the Law of Cycles with a person's name, they come to realize that the Law of Cycles is a living entity. So they trap Homura inside her soul gem in order to draw out Madoka. Because of this, the cat's out of the bag. It's been proven that Madoka exists, and people can interact with her, meaning that they can trap and control her (even if it takes time to figure out how). So when Homura escapes the labyrinth she has to make a choice, knowing now that Kyubey knows that Madoka exists and plans to contain her. Her choices could be to ascend to magical girl valhalla and watch as Kyubey eventually takes Madoka prisoner, or take Madoka prisoner herself to ensure that Kyubey can't control her. So she overtakes Madoka, steals her universe-rewriting powers, and remakes the world in a way that she's the only magical girl and all the curses of humanity are placed in Kyubey (torture). There's a reason she refers to it as a sin in the end, and why her own familiars in her new world pelt her with tomatoes. She *hates* herself for it. But she justifies it to herself because in this way, Madoka can be happy as a normal girl, even if her own existence is suffering to make that happen. This also ensures she can be close to Madoka, which is the selfish act that basically turned her into a devil. Homura is to Madoka as Lucifer is to god - a subservient that loved him so much it destroyed him. Homura is basically what happens when a person is tortured to the brink of sanity, given forbidden knowledge and then given a world-shattering choice. No choice she could have made was a *good* choice or a perfect choice, so she picked the most selfish one she could. In the end Homura's world is technically better for everyone - except Homura (and Kyubey).
Oh okay wow this actually makes the story so much cooler to me haha. I had a feeling I was missing out on some depth but I didn’t realize it went THIS deep. What an amazing series. Thank you for your comment!
> when Homura escapes the labyrinth she has to make a choice And before escaping the labyrinth she had (and made) another choice - to be killed as a witch while Madoka had forgotten she's a goddess, just to keep incubators away from her. Homura is torn between desiring to be with Madoka, and wanting to keep Madoka safe. She constantly picks the 2nd option over the course of the TV series and most of the Rebellion - until the last part when she finally slips. > In the end Homura's world is technically better for everyone I agree, although there are hints all over the place that the world is unstable (could be a plot of upcoming 4th movie). > so she picked the most selfish one she could. There was a great summary of Homura's character and motivation on 4chan, and I'd like to quote its final part: "Everyone gets a pretty decent outcome out of it. Mami gets a little sister, Sayaka is alive and Kyoko gets her friend back. Are you going to be their friend? Not a chance, buddy, you've seen way too much idiocy from them over the years. And oh, who's that coming down the road? Yep, its fucking Sayaka. Let me guess, the first thing she's going to do is complain about this all and- yup there she goes. Oh, what's that? I don't have the “right” to do this? Fuck off Sayaka, I don't care if I do or do not have the “right” to make things not suck. And if that makes me evil? Then give me a black dress, skeleton wings, and sign me the fuck up. Oh and I'll totally hatch an evil doomsday plot to blow up the ocean or whatever, riiiight after all the wraiths are gone. You know, the enemy of magical girls where more and more keep popping up no matter how many times you kill them? Now take your morality and go try not to kill yourself over not getting a" - well, google up the rest, it's a good read.
She want madoka to be happy okay. Remember in the field of flowers scene Madoka said she can't wish something like that being forgotten by everyone. Madoka said she can't bear something like that. That's why homura ran amok. After all homura wish was to protect madoka. If madoka was unhappy or suffering because of her wish it's natural for homura to snap like that.
I remember a theory stating as to why Homura did what she did was not just out of possessive love for Madoka but because she was protecting her from Kyubey who. If yoi think about it, Kyubey may try this experiment again and Homura wants to protect Madoka. She made a mistake for Madoka even if it means Madoka potentially diskiking her for it. A topic Madoka's mom told Madoka herself before the fight between Sayaka and Kyoko.
If you think about it, Rebellion ultimately serves as a giant character analysis of Homura. We see her strengths, her weaknesses, we see the ideal world that she desires in the labyrinth, and of course we see what it is that she treasures most, which is seeing Madoka living a happy life. The fact that it all literally takes place within Homura's soul just sort of cements the concept of soul searching/self-reflection. Kyubey seeks to enslave Madoka for its own purposes because Homura let her guard down, assuming that there was nothing Kyubey could do to someone who literally became a god who wrote a new law into the universe. If you go back and watch Homura's transformation sequence again, what you might notice is that she has erected something like a witch's labyrinth that has grown to encompass the entire universe. She has effectively made a barrier that has forced the human portion of Madoka to physically manifest in the world, cutting her off from the rest of the law of the cycle. Madoka became a goddess because her wish caused a paradox in the world. Because her wish was to save *all* witches, she had to manifest as a magical girl at the end of the world in order to save herself, meaning that she existed both as a witch and a magical girl at the same time, which is impossible. What Homura did was actually very similar, but the paradox she caused was in her own soul rather than in the outside world. As Homura began turning into a witch, she told Kyubey that she made her wish in order to save Madoka. Now, she began to purposely flood her soul gem with a curse for the very same reason. It makes no sense for a magical girl's wish and curse to be born out of the same thing. The wish happens because the magical girl desires something, and the curse happens because the magical girl's wish ultimately betrays her. That a wish and a curse are both generated out of the same desire creates a paradox, one that Homura calls love. Her soul gem is forced to take a new form because of this, and Homura becomes an entirely new existence, much like Madoka. Have you ever watched Fate/Stay Night Unlimited Blade Works? If you haven't, that might be a good project to watch next. Fate/Stay Night centers around the Holy Grail War, in which seven mages each summon a hero of myth and legend in order to fight over the Holy Grail, an omnipotent wish granting device. Unlimited Blade Works has a prequel called Fate/Zero, which was written by the same person that wrote Madoka Magica, and also features the same sound track composer. There are also three movies titled Heavens Feel, although I don't know if you can find those for streaming anywhere. The Heavens Feel movies are an alternate timeline to the Unlimited Blade Works series, and the events that play out are vastly different. If you choose to watch these and can find the movies for streaming, I would recommend watching Fate/Zero last (although opinions vary on this subject).
Homura decided to fight Madoka's new reality because of the reason she fell to despair and became a witch in the first place: Madoka's new reality isn't fulfilling her wish. Not only is Madoka living an eternity of suffering for the sake of all magical girls (we love you mahou shoujo jesus-chan), but Homura now spends the rest of her mortal existence with Madoka no more material than a mere concept. Her wish hinged On Saving Madoka. And she simply doesn't view this as Madoka being saved. She views it as her being conned into the worst possible ending for her. She even says that her love has turned her into the devil. Homura ripped Madoka from godhood and rewrote reality for a second time specifically because she was so corrupted by her love of madoka and harbored a deeply rooted desire to save her from this vicious cycle. A real Shakespearean tragedy.
Just a fun thing about the cake song. Madoka's line is smth like "I'm the melon! if you split it, it will give you sweet dreams!" - foreshadowing the ending.
This movie does take a couple of watches to get the full understand of it. But in my opinion, there are two factors that ultimately leads Homura to making her decision in the end. One is Kyubey. He told her the incubator's plan to try and capture the law of cycles(Madoka) to revert the universe back to the witches formula of collecting entropy, since Homura was the one who told him about it in the first place at the end of the show. The other factor, in my opinion, is that it was an inevitable conclusion. Out of all the magical girls, Homura's wish was the only one that could not be truly completed since Madoka no longer existed. At least not in that current reality. So it's just Homura completing her wish and continuing to protect Madoka fron the Incubators. It's also very selfish teenage love, but thats just another layer on a already loaded cake.
I'm glad some people here have already written way smarter answers than i can at this moment , i absolutely love this series and movie and my heart hurts so much for Homura tbh
ESSAY WARNING (i got carried away, english is not my first language so i apologize for any grammatical mistakes.) Homura does selfish things with good intentions. I don't think shes a good/bad person, she's totally in the gray area. Imagine seeing your first friend, the first person to see who you are and treat you with respect (Which is the bare minimum, but Homura never experienced that in her whole life, because we never saw her having any friends, family or hell, even hospital staff members to talk to, she was basically doomed to fall into insanity in that school which she was bullied in, if it weren't for Madoka) die over and over again, for at least 100 times (and since every timeline is about ~1 month it means that she is in her 20s by now with the mentality of a MIDDLE SCHOOL GIRL) and not being able to do shit about it only to discover that by reseting timelines you are only making it worse. Since Homura did NOT mature at all since trauma doesn't do that, it only makes sense that when Madoka tries to get her soul gem (basically ''killing'' Homura) Homura rebells (name of the film) agaisnt it not accepting hers or Madoka's fate, because that would mean everything she did was useless and Madoka would also be miserable since in that scene where they talk in the labiyrinth Madoka would NEVER do something that makes her unable to see the people she loves ever again. (Evidenced by the fact that in the film when Madoka reaches from a window for Homura with her arm, there's a lot of scars) Homura would never let the person she has to protect at all costs have a worse fate than death just like that. But doing that would go agaisnt Madoka's (God's) wish, but Madoka's wish also goes agaisnt Homura's, so she turn into motherucking SATAN. Since the only entity who could go agaisnt that is the devil. (If Madoka is a god, Homura can't protect her, but if Homura can protect her, Madoka can't be a god etc.) Also, there isn't 3 cities or whatever, because when Homura goes agaisnt Madoka and turns into a demon, the only way that she can do that is by rewriting the whole universe to make that possible. (evidenced by the fact that she has already seen that place before in the series when Madoka turns into Jesus) And she basically turned the whole universe into a labyrinth, which also explains why Sayaka and Madoka remember shit. Sayaka remembers because she was part of the law of cycles (Madoka) and her entire role is to remember, but going agaisnt Homura would make Madoka (law of cycles) hate her (the whole reason this all happenned) and since Homura is the devil she makes everyone forget everything, and it's not like that's bad, since i think it's safe to say everyone regreted all of this and having another chance to live a ''normal'' life again is a miracle. Although Madoka forgot that she has powers, that doesn't mean she isn't a God anymore, because if anything goes wrong there, Madoka can just go back to that form, that's why i think Homura knows that's inevitable (evidenced by the fact that at the end of the film she says ''One day i'll have to fight you'') but she still keeps an eye close on Madoka. But Homura HATES herself for doing all of this, even though this was the ''best'' option for her at that moment, in the end, Homura WILL have a bad ending, not only she can't live normally in that reality, she can't be happy because she knows this is all a facade and everything is fake as hell. (Evidenced by the fact that her familiars kill themselves by jumping off of cliff and throw tomatoes at her) But she goes along because the only thing she wants to see at that point after all the torture she has been is to see Madoka finally have a good ending. You can see this because when Homura wasn't aware the city wasn't a labyrinth, it was basically what she thought a perfect world would look like, but now that she can't live the bliss that ignorance is, she can't even be happy with what she thought was the best for herself. Is it the worst case scenario for her? No. I don't think so, since it's not the ''nightmare'' that she talks about during the garden scene, ''a world where i could never see you again.'' but that doesn't make the situation better. The new reality is just a personalized hell for Homura, disguised as a paradise. As for Kyubey, when Homura is rewriting the whole universe, she says that the incubators will ''finally'' have an use for humanity, which is to ''absorve'' or ''be'' all the bad things for the humans/universe (Things such as sins, witches/nightmares/wraiths; that's why magical girls aren't a thing anymore) and he is in that state because of that torture. On a similar note, Homura never got the same attachment to the other girls as Madoka did. She just sees the other 3 girls as ''obstacles'' and values their lives less, and considers her mission as more important, since she is willingly to sacrifice them herself for Madoka. And when she does try to interact with them, she just manipulates them and dips. i'm going to try and explain why: Mami: I think Homura never was too fond of Mami after the first timeline was because Mami was too reserved, and didn't express her emotions and feelings very often (unlike Madoka) and when she does, she has like a mental breakdown (Like the one she cries infront of Madoka in ep 3) and in that scene she tried to bring Madoka with her in the rabbit hole that is being a magical girl so that she isn't alone anymore. (A selfish desire). She just started caring less and less. She still spared Mami in rebellion though, and i think we can all agree that it's because she doesn't want Madoka to deal with another dead friend. Sayaka: She was always the cause of Madoka's and Kyoko's downfall, making Madoka suffer because of her death, or by dying influencing Madoka to wish for her to come back from the dead. (Yes, it can happen since in the very first timeline Madoka wish to save a SINGLE CAT.), And she makes Kyoko sacrifice herself, making Homura have less support at the end of the month when she needs it most. It doesn't help her case that she also doesn't accept the truth of the contracts when Homura tells her, insulting her etc etc. Kyoko: In rebellion, we can see the two getting along really well, i just think that because Homura was too focused on her mission she only saw Kyoko as a tool to defeat Walpurgisnatch, and maybe because they both have a stubborn nature, such as Kyoko not listening to Homura's advice and Homura refusing Madoka's fate. Madoka did an act of ultimate selflessness sacrifice, creating an universe of fragile hope, which still had flaws. Homura did an act of ultimate selfishness, sacrifing herself for an universe with no flaws in the eyes of every other soul in there except her-, creating fragile hapinness. And being the only whole who knows the whole story.
Remember in the garden scene where madoka said she wouldn't want to go somewhere where no one remembers her and she wouldn't be so courageous to take on such a heavy burden. That's why Homura did what she said. Her love for Madoka is more possessive than anything. She wants to 'have' Madoka
@@SpunkReviews The thing is if homura went with her Madoka would still be in a situation where she’d be away from her family and friends (still having to continue her duty to protect magical girls from becoming witches and seemingly hardly having any time for herself). Homura took her so she could live the life she previously lost. A life where she could be with her family again. If homura wanted to take madoka for herself she could’ve just made a world where Madoka was in love with her or something (considering that she has godlike powers) but she decided to make a world where madoka and the others can live normally
@@SpunkReviews yeah, it's mostly teenage love, like, her wish wasn't just to be with madoka, she wants to save her, i'm not obsessed with homura enough to have a full analysis of her character at the ready like i do with sayaka but i feel like it's kinda the same situation, they both feel like they by themselves aren't deserving of love so they have to "win" the affection they want, in sayaka's case by restoring kyusuke's hands and acting like a hero, in homura's case by taking madoka for herself
Also Madoka's answer in that scene is tainted, because she's not fully herself. Her lack of memories of what happened outside the labyrinth changed her perspective and she willingly made the wish she did at the end of the anime.
Just in case somebody did not mention this in the comments Bebe was The girl that eventually became the witch “Charlotte“ (the one whom bit Mam’s head off
Even tho I’m incredibly late I’m gonna give my opinion about what Homura did at the end. As stated by different comments the main reason Homura did what she did was because she realized at the end of the serie she was right, that was a fate worse than death. That is also the moment when Homuraks views of goddess Madoka get shattered. This is a portrayed in the scene in which Homura is clinging to Madokami’s mural as it is falling apart (as contrast to how it was stable before the flower field scene) while the Clara dolls (Homuraks subconscious and emotions) repeat the phrase “got ist tot”. This is a reference to a chapter in “the gay science” by Nietzsche, that (I may be wrong) basically talks about how when the idea of a God is destroyed so is everything related to it and the world made by said God. In this scene, after Madoka tells her her true feelings (it was confirmed by the author those were her true feelings) Homuraks realizes Madoka is NOT a goddess, she’s the same 1r year old girl that loved her life before she had to commit a sacrifice for the sake of the world. With this realization, Homuraks views on the world and the worth of saving and protecting it become vain to her. . This is took up again before Homura and Madoka beat Homulilly, when Homura says she “won’t hesitate anymore”, which is something she beats herself for doing when Madoka made a wish in the series. Homura’s reasons are once again taken up again in her voice lines in the magic record game. (English isn’t my first language and I can’t see what I’m typing so sorry if something doesn’t make sense)
Alright let me give my perspective on what I understood on everything that happened. So one of the earliest scenes that's super important is probably when they meet within the flower field. The scene where Homura is getting her hair braided, is pretty symbolic of Homura being inbetween personalities at that second, She's stuck between the original sweet innocent girl she was before everything started in the original timeline, and the obsessive magical girl she became. When she's talking to Madoka, who still has her memories altered, her feelings are being changed. I feel that she was originally kind of ok with allowing Madoka's wish at the end of the series. However, now Madoka herself is confirming Homura's doubts about her wish not being good, not keeping Madoka happy, which is where her betrayal seems to be started. Then we see Homura's interaction with Kyubey, and here she starts to go over her own feelings, and her past. She plans on dying there because, it would be the better alternative to the incubator's getting there hands on Madoka. That's why she isn't acting against Madoka just yet. Another important detail is pointed out in the holy quintet fight. That is that Sayaka and Bebe are retainer's for Madoka's memories and powers. That's what will come out later. Now the big part of what happened, and what most people have problems with. So I think we all know that Homura is pretty obsessive. Her going with Madoka just wouldn't have been enough, after all it would be Madoka saving Homura again, which isn't what she wanted. Further, if you remember the flower scene, Madoka, though through altered memories, confirmed to Homura that she wasn't happy being so far away. So she obviously couldn't allow Madoka to continue being a Goddess. Now how did Homura have the power to actually do what she did. Well her wish from the original timeline after all. She wished to be able to save Madoka herself, Madoka being non existent could be considered the same as her being dead, so not saved, therefore her wish would not be completed. That could mean that her wish transformed and became the power that she used to change the Law of Cycles. Another theory I have, is the same way that Homura was putting fate on Madoka when she went back in time, she probably put fate on herself as well, which also helped boost her wish, just as it allowed Madoka to make such a powerful wish. So now, the principle that was changed by Homura was her taking Madoka and making her into an existing being, something she wasn't as the Law of Cycles. Overall it makes sense, through her experience in the labyrinth and her obsession with Madoka. Now how could Sayaka remember, I'm assuming it has to do with the fact that she was used as a retainer. I'm sure the powers imparted on her, and her nature of being a retainer, is what allowed her to resist Homura's powers. As for Bebe, well she was never really super serious, so I'm sure it just slipped her mind, so to say. Another important detail that I want to point out, that is kind of important I feel is this. Homura's which, Homulily, is referred to as the Nutcracker which. The Nutcracker being a play, and her familiars, the Clara Dolls, are referred to as observers. That's why when Homura has the unprecedented character shift to pure "evil" they are throwing tomatoes. She's putting on an act and they don't consider it to be particularly convincing. It's important to realize that the Clara dolls are said to be Homura's negative aspects, or what she considers to be negative anyway. So she herself doesn't believe that she is playing her part very well. Though she chooses to play it in order to save everyone. After all they are very happy, or able to become very happy in this new reality. So yeah, I can't say she did nothing wrong, but all things considered I can't say she is evil. I mean at the beginning she herself mentions that the only salvation they have now as magical girls, who "traded their souls for an eternity of battle and conflict" is to completely disappear. If anything, I'm not sure the full extent of the changes she made, but everyone is able to continue existing and she used the incubators to handle all of the curses. Which they kind of deserve. So that's my opinion and understanding.
im so glad people still watch this movie and enjoy it. i rewatch it like, 3 times a month bc im ALWAYS seeing something new and also i adore it with every fiber of my being (i am foaming at the mouth). this movie has changed my brain chemistry everyone in the comments has done a fantastic job of explaining the movie's events i love reading it so much aah!!!!
A lot of commented already mentioned the flower field scene, but that's (probably) not the only reason for what Homura did! Kyubey made it clear that they are trying to control Madoka, especially now that they've confirmed her existence. What's stopping them from trying again, without Homura? And like Homura said, even pain is precious to her now, so of course she would sacrament eternity with Madoka in Magical Girl Heaven to continue protecting her. And, to her traumatized 14 year old mind, this may be her only way to redeem herself from failing to stop Madoka from making her wish. And to punish herself from betraying said wish, she becomes a demon because thats how she views herself. Of course the next entry to this story should hopefully clarify her intentions, but thats my understanding of it for now.
Yeah…. This movie broke me, I was in udder horror at the ending with homura and just “WTF” to the point my roommate had to come in Xd TBIS movie is so good, and I love it Mani vs homura is still one of if not the best gun fights In anime , I will die on this But now for the big question When are we getting our magica record , a Madoka magica side story review
YESS THIS MOVIE IS INSANE AND THE MAMI VS HOMURA OMGGG!! Also you will get that sooooon! What do you think is better.. one big review with all the spin offs or a discussion on each of them?
@@SpunkReviews well there is only one anime spin off, being the spin off to the mobile game, but it is 26 episodes (or 28, one of the two) sooo do what you want Also I’m gonna tell you this now, magica record is not going for MM2 it’s going for it’s own thing so go in with a open mind
If your talking about the mangas , I have not gotten to them yet as dyslexia sucks ass, (why I like watching anime dubs more, makes life easy) so, I don’t know how to answer
I agree 100% with this. I found out about the show like two years ago, I have seen both the sub and dub maybe a little over 5 to 6 times. And the more you watch it the more there is the analyze
9:15 What are you talking about? Homura clearly lost and had to be saved by sayaka, and even sayaka tells homura "Did you really think you could beat mami in peak form your either really dumb or full of yourself" lol, homura loses to her if mami is mentally stable, but can easily beat mami by the end of the movie once she turns into demon homura.
In addition to a lot of smart explanation for Homura's action I see in the comment I do want to add something I don't. Homura Soul Gem was corrupted by her love for Madoka. My girl was turning into wathever a love based witch would be, a succubus let's say. She was not going to be able to control herself. Madoka can't stop that since her powers is against witches, not succubus. I also like how her fall mirrors Sayakas in that they both made their wish for someone else and broke when it did not work out how they hoped. Insert that Lucas meme about rhyming here. Btw: Becoming the devil because you betrayed Gods wish out of love for god. Very biblical, classic devil stuff , love it. This movie is actually pretty good if you focus on the plot points. It's mostly the execution that is a little meh in parts. Mostly the ending, a tad rushed on the info dumps. The series was much better paced.
theres a prety long video essay about homura's character that i always recommend since its so mindblowing!! its called ""Beyond Good and Evil" - Encomium of Homura (on Nietzsche, Camus, and love)" by mimikyuno. thanks for the review!! its always wonderful to see someone enjoy madoka and just have more madoka content bc of it hehe. this is my favorite movie ever, even though its incredibly dense lol
literally all the people in this comment section: oh Madoka is so noble, she sacrificed the love of her family, her friends, her ENTIRE LIFE so she can work forever, with no breaks, this is so noble, surely Madoka (a 14 year old) is okay with this, with no way to talk to the people who love her, forever. and like. How can you all miss the point?? You know that theme in the original series? How selflessness *is not always a good thing* and that it can hurt you and everyone around you really badly? Do you think that this theme has suddenly gone up in a poof of smoke because Madoka’s the one to do it?? Also you all: Homura’s the DEVIL she is SELFISH she is POSSESSIVE, she made all these girls come back to life with the SELFISH POSSESSIVE INTENT to watch them from a distance and the DISGUSTING satisfaction from watching them NOT DIE. Like. What the hell. This comment section is really hostile to Homura. Who is trying her best to give people happiness, who is trapping herself in her own personal hell? Is it “selfish” to want to see your loved ones be happy? Are you seriously listening to her go “I am so EVIL I am the DEVIL and I will DESTROY THE WORLD” and saying to yourselves, yes, I believe that this child is very serious right now, she is totally telling the truth. I want to SHAKE PEOPLE HERE. (more in the replies because everyone is going “HOMURA COULD HAVE GONE TO MAGICAL GIRL AFTERLIFE” and “MADOKA IS SO SO HAPPY TO LIVE AND WORK FOREVER NEVER TALKING TO ANYONE” and I am so mad. How do you all come to these conclusions??)
1. There is no magical fucking afterlife. There is no happy meguca heaven. Those girls are dead. Madoka’s salvation to magical girls is *death* - much better than suffering forever as a witch and killing other people, but magical girls do not go to some made-up afterlife. NOWHERE is it ever stated that Madoka’s wish somehow created this afterlife when nothing in her wish ever said that! In fact, there’s production notes that say that she takes magical girls and puts them to sleep. They do not wake up to eat. Or talk to her. Or talk to each other. They only wake up when they have a mission like Sayaka and Nagisa in this movie. That’s why Nagisa is SO EXCITED to eat cheese. There is no cheese in heaven. There is nothing in heaven. The fandom loves to imagine this made-up afterlife because knowing that magical girls go nowhere hurts so bad. I like to think about this too! But it’s not actually canon and people keep using it to say that Homura should have just waited to reunite with Madoka, as if Madoka could ever talk to her again. Madoka CAN’T.
Literally, in the Rebellion Production Notes, the writer of Madoka Magica says that someone suggested being a god might be too heavy a fate for a 14 year old girl. And he agrees. I’m going to remind you that Madokami is a god of death, that she has to watch magical girls of every age (usually other children) die forever and ever and ever. Remember how she reacted after mercy-killing Mami in the timeline where Mami tried to kill everyone? Do you think she’s going to be happy to harvest magical girl souls forever? Another thing from the production notes: the writer specifically asks the reader if they think Homura is going to be happy if she let Madoka take her. He says something like “The moment Madoka takes her, Homura will disappear. Will that make her happy?” *Of course not* because there is *no heaven* and Madoka will never talk to her again!
“Oh but Madoka respects the wishes of all magical girls and Homura is overruling-“ I am going to just lift my finger and point to Nagisa Momoe, the new girl in this movie. who is NINE YEARS OLD and made a wish for a fucking cheesecake because Kyubey approached her in a moment where she couldn’t think straight because her mother was dying. Is this okay?? Don’t we have a word for this…. oh, right, coercion. If you look closely during the end of Rebellion, you’ll see Nagisa laughing and dancing around Homura. Looks like someone is happy to live more than nine years. Never forget that Madoka had no fucking choice when she made her wish. Homura was dying. The city of Mitakihara was being razed to the ground. Her family is there somewhere. If she doesn’t make an absolutely amazing wish, she and Homura (who she just found out had done all of these incredible things for her) would have died. She’s so brave for doing this but she is also….. fourteen!
“Oh but Madoka isn’t suffering when she saves other people-“ look at her wrists in that scene where her gigantic hand reaches for Homura. Look at it. Look at how many scars she has on her wrists. Does that remind you of anything. That scene with Homura and Madoka in chairs, and Madoka stands up, and Madoka tips over with her arms spread like she’s on a cross and turns into mush. Look at it again. Then LOOK AT THE LYRICS TO MATA ASHITA, the ending song for the original series, where the singer is talking about feeling small and watching the world go by without being able to touch it. The singer talks about how much she wishes she could talk to someone more and she wants that someone to see through her fake smile. But in the end the singer says “see you tomorrow” and knows it’s a lie. Look at Madokami’s dialogue in Magia Record. Madokami spends nearly all of it talking about how she still watches her family and how she can’t help her mother anymore when her mother collapses. How she can’t play with her little brother. How she knows how much people love her (specifically mentioning Homura, by the way) and how she tries to be worthy of it. WOW MADOKA IS SO HAPPY. SHE SOUNDS SO HAPPY TO ME. Now look at her fucking smile as she’s around her family again in the end of Rebellion and how Sayaka CRIES just from talking to her friends.
this is all really rambley but I am so mad. Homura selfish and evil my ass. At worst she’s sacrificing people’s memories for their lives and you know what? MADOKA. did that too. When she rewrote the universe. She left Homura to grieve (knowing that this would taint her soul gem by the way!) and remember a universe completely different from the new one and while I sympathize with the idea that she just wanted someone to know she existed, Homura nearly went insane because of this. Homura thought she made up Madoka and all of her own suffering and the previous universe just to stop herself from being lonely. That is horrific. You can tell me that it’s wrong for both of them to do this, but you can’t say that Homura is evil because of it-Madoka did it first. As far as I can judge it, rewriting memories to fit a kinder universe is better than letting someone go insane. anyone can chime in here. I will happily debate you.
My brother you didn't understand a lot of the movie im afraid. I dont blame you, this is not something easy to wrap your head around, i suggest watching it a couple more times and mabye if you are still confused talking it out some more. People are still trying to make theyr mind after more than ten years xD "Homura's kinda toxic" is a good place to start :D
Haha yea I know I definitely didn’t give the most analytic insight into the movie ever, it was more of a raw reaction / first thoughts than like a super well thought out and scripted review, that’s kinda the whole concept of this channel d: thank you for watching!! (Ive been meaning to give this movie a rewatch and this comment may just push me to do it ;) )
@@SpunkReviews I kinda hope you do, Rebellion is a very deep and complex movie and little bits of realization can drastically change how one watches the movie. As a quick example we hear Kyubey rambling about entropy and the heat death of the universe and how the Magical Girls are necessary to slow it down or even stop and that's good and all, but when you see the current Madoka Magica timeline (the one rewritten by Madoka's wish) outside of Homura's Barrier, in the last part of the movie before she rebels, the slandscape looks like a wasteland. Mabye it's just artistic flare or mabye the heat death of the universe is not so distant as we though :)
Okay, I mostly like your takes but I will not stand by that Hitomi slander. She had a crush on the same guy as her friend and she called a meeting and said "you have dibs and I respect that but if you don't confess to him soon, I will" which is a very mature way for a 13-year-old to handle that. Like, she couldn't know about Sayaka's other issues
True I think I it’s just her over all attitude and way she said things seemed off to me HAHA but that could just be me . After all I am well aware these are middle school kids and I’m not saying it super serious lolol. Ty for watching !!
@@SpunkReviews Homura is my favorite character and I'm so glad you love her too!
> when Homura escapes the labyrinth she has to make a choice
And before escaping the labyrinth she had (and made) another choice - to be killed as a witch while Madoka had forgotten she's a goddess, just to keep incubators away from her.
Homura is torn between desiring to be with Madoka, and wanting to keep Madoka safe. She constantly picks the 2nd option over the course of the TV series and most of the Rebellion - until the last part when she finally slips.
> In the end Homura's world is technically better for everyone
I agree, although there are hints all over the place that the world is unstable (could be a plot of upcoming 4th movie).
> so she picked the most selfish one she could.
There was a great summary of Homura's character and motivation on 4chan, and I'd like to quote its final part:
"Everyone gets a pretty decent outcome out of it.
She's amnesiac though director notes point this out
I remember a theory stating as to why Homura did what she did was not just out of possessive love for Madoka but because she was protecting her from Kyubey who.
SO PEAK DUDE I LOVE MADOKA
SAME IM DUMB AF BUT I APPRECIATE THE COMMENTS HAHA
ESSAY WARNING (i got carried away, english is not my first language so i apologize for any grammatical mistakes.)
Homura does selfish things with good intentions.
(If Madoka is a god, Homura can't protect her, but if Homura can protect her, Madoka can't be a god etc.)
Also, there isn't 3 cities or whatever, because when Homura goes agaisnt Madoka and turns into a demon, the only way that she can do that is by rewriting the whole universe to make that possible.
And when she does try to interact with them, she just manipulates them and dips. i'm going to try and explain why:
Mami: I think Homura never was too fond of Mami after the first timeline was because Mami was too reserved, and didn't express her emotions and feelings very often (unlike Madoka) and when she does, she has like a mental breakdown (Like the one she cries infront of Madoka in ep 3) and in that scene she tried to bring Madoka with her in the rabbit hole that is being a magical girl so that she isn't alone anymore.
OK see that makes sense. I just feel like if homura went with madoka she would have her more…? But yeah middle school logic
No, it's explicitly NOT a desire to have Madoka for herself. She just wants Madoka to be happy, to be with her family. The flower scene explains it.
So that's my opinion and understanding.
im so glad people still watch this movie and enjoy it. i rewatch it like, 3 times a month bc im ALWAYS seeing something new and also i adore it with every fiber of my being (i am foaming at the mouth). this movie has changed my brain chemistry
everyone in the comments has done a fantastic job of explaining the movie's events i love reading it so much aah!!!!
Yeah…. This movie broke me, I was in udder horror at the ending with homura and just “WTF” to the point my roommate had to come in Xd TBIS movie is so good, and I love it
Mani vs homura is still one of if not the best gun fights In anime , I will die on this
But now for the big question
When are we getting our magica record , a Madoka magica side story review
YESS THIS MOVIE IS INSANE AND THE MAMI VS HOMURA OMGGG!!
Also you will get that sooooon!
What do you think is better.. one big review with all the spin offs or a discussion on each of them?
@@SpunkReviews well there is only one anime spin off, being the spin off to the mobile game, but it is 26 episodes (or 28, one of the two) sooo do what you want
Also I’m gonna tell you this now, magica record is not going for MM2 it’s going for it’s own thing so go in with a open mind
If your talking about the mangas , I have not gotten to them yet as dyslexia sucks ass, (why I like watching anime dubs more, makes life easy) so, I don’t know how to answer
You've watched it twice? Ahh, there's your problem. We need double digits.
HAHA IKKK I want to show friends and family so I’ll def get up there eventually haha
I agree 100% with this. I found out about the show like two years ago, I have seen both the sub and dub maybe a little over 5 to 6 times. And the more you watch it the more there is the analyze
9:15 What are you talking about? Homura clearly lost and had to be saved by sayaka, and even sayaka tells homura "Did you really think you could beat mami in peak form your either really dumb or full of yourself" lol, homura loses to her if mami is mentally stable, but can easily beat mami by the end of the movie once she turns into demon homura.
homura goated!!!
Me when I become satan cause I have a crush on a girl (I am in middle school)
@@SpunkReviews she was so real for that
In addition to a lot of smart explanation for Homura's action I see in the comment I do want to add something I don't.
😍 i love it
theres a prety long video essay about homura's character that i always recommend since its so mindblowing!! its called ""Beyond Good and Evil" - Encomium of Homura (on Nietzsche, Camus, and love)" by mimikyuno. thanks for the review!! its always wonderful to see someone enjoy madoka and just have more madoka content bc of it hehe. this is my favorite movie ever, even though its incredibly dense lol
Beyond good an evil is a lie
Either You're evil, not evil or neutral
literally all the people in this comment section: oh Madoka is so noble, she sacrificed the love of her family, her friends, her ENTIRE LIFE so she can work forever, with no breaks, this is so noble, surely Madoka (a 14 year old) is okay with this, with no way to talk to the people who love her, forever.
I will happily debate you.
hey this is the one i asked for
damn, wandavison....that makes me remember just how bad that show is compared to anything especially Madoka
Holy crap I'm 5 months late forget everything I said lmao
„All I know is that I like it…“ 😂 that will be my response from now on everytime someone asks me why I did sth. They consider „wrong“
i watch this movie when i’m 13 😂 it takes 5 times for me to rewatch and finally get it
My brother you didn't understand a lot of the movie im afraid. I dont blame you, this is not something easy to wrap your head around, i suggest watching it a couple more times and mabye if you are still confused talking it out some more. People are still trying to make theyr mind after more than ten years xD
"Homura's kinda toxic" is a good place to start :D
Aka the asspull ending
