Women’s tennis was so good back then.

Real tennis. Or as true tennis aficionados know the description of tennis being "chess meets boxing". That's been gone for the past 20-25 years. Very unfortunate.

Arantxa always seemed to do best at the Canadian Open when it was held in Montreal (winner 1992, 1994, finalist in 1996 and 1998), rather than Toronto where this semi final was the furthest she ever got after being a finalist in 1989. I get the impression that the courts were quite a bit slower in Montreal than Toronto.

It was also known that Sanchez-Vicario (and her entire family) enjoyed the tennis facility/centre and atmosphere, as well as the city itself. She was also very vocal about the wonderful crowds and fans in Montréal as well. Those two cities are in fact known to be like night and day, oil and water from each other.

We didn't know it at the time, but Arantxa was in the middle of an almost 1 year title drought. After such a strong start to 1993 where she won 4 tournaments, after winning in Hamburg in early May she didn't win another singles title until Amelia Island at the start of April 1994.

It would take Jennifer 2 years and a half to win another match 😢

I seldom saw Arantxa making so many unforced errors as what she did in the second set, maybe because she lost the composure after wasting 5-0 lead in the first set tiebreak.
Their matches were always interesting. Both were quick movers, with Jennifer were excellent ball striker when she was on while Arantxa were great counterpuncher and tactician.

That traditional hard court colour was nice, but mainly live in-person. On television it was a challenge for viewing especially with the sun factor you mentioned.

@@alexsdb9712a real problem I think with the TV system that was used in North America, and Japan back then, which was called NTSC. It had far fewer lines in the picture and therefore noticeably worse picture quality than the TV systems (such as PAL and SECAM) used in other parts of the world. The joke was that NTSC stood for "Never The Same Colour".
