When Mary was on, her groundstrokes were scarily good. A lot of natural power and fast-twitch firepower in her shoulders...probably one of best ball strikers of all time. The only ones I've seen with kind of raw power combined with supreme ball striking are Serena and Sabalenka.
Great video quality....also I like how they used a variety of camera angles in that match.
Wow!! Even at such a young age...Steffi was so FREAKIN GOOD!!! 😱
I remember how badly wrote the (german) press about that young girl Davenport.
ahmmm..seles is the only one that can trash graf, vicario, pierce, sabatini, navratilova, evert, hingis, sharapova, serena, venus etc. If not for gunther parche attempted murder killing, seles is the real GOAT. Period. Full stop.
😂
Steffi hadnt dropped a set all that year so far, a record I think that still stands. It was considered a huge achievement for Lindsay to have a set point. As for steffi, this is where her 1994 started to go downhill. She lost her first set of the year in the final to Zvereva, then took 5 weeks off. There's an interview with Steffi on TH-cam from August 1994 where she said after she came back from that 5 week break she was frustrated she wasn't playing as well so started to do a lot more training off the court. She said that normally during tournaments she put on weight, but she was still losing weight. She said it took her a while to realise that all the extra training was leaving her very tired and depleted and that was the reason why she had the string of losses that Summer.
5 yrs later, at Wimbledon finals, Davenport beat Graf only because Linds got fitter and her game improved as well...Also, Graf had an injured knee and had played 2 tough 3 setters previously.....Otherwise....a 100% Graf would have won that final!!
Lindsay on her day very tough for any player. She had a decent record against Steffi.
Davenport's talent was noticed very early on. It was her fitness that many questioned if I remember correctly. Her career kind of faltered in 1995 but she was back on track in 1996 after dropping a significant amount of weight. It took her a short while to break through at the majors though. But in fairness to her, she played in a very competitive era.
8:58 minutes: Graf hits a rare double handed backhand longline!!!
One of the best watches ever. How Chris pulled back-AMAZING.
Always loved how you would barely hear a peep from Steffi. Yet she was hitting as hard and running as much. God these noisy women are so annoying. 😂😂😂😂 ......Just had to get that off my chest glad Steffi was able to break back and pick up her game. Cunningham had her on the ropes but as great champions do Steffi pulled it off. 😊😊😊
My country Woman Amanda Coetzer vs my idol. Great match thank you for sharing
Rinaldi beat a teen Steffi. Steffi in her 20s in my humble opinion would have beaten her. 😊😊
Steffi también volea de maravilla!! Vaya drive más bueno ,slice y footwork
Мартина просто супер! Для меня она всегда лучшая ❤❤❤❤❤
Gosh. In full flight, there is no thher woman who had a more beautiful game than Steffi. She will forever be my GOAT
I don't think Chris liked Golarsa hitting the balls across the court in front of her. I think she probably felt very satisfied by the last point on many levels.
It was not that Chris played badly to lose the second set and get down in the third, and it wasn't that Golarsa played badly that Chris came back.
Steffi Graf was on fire that day. Her best I still believe even today 27 June 2024 is still the best ever. She is the standard in woman's tennis.
3R not 4R
Graf's speed around the court was mind bending. Arguably the greatest female athlete to play WTA.
Your right graf is still the best of the bests😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
3:36. What can you say?🤷♂️
Nothing but to admire her. That's what a GOAT can do.
It’s not Sugiyama playing bad but Steffi playing too good. Her serves, her slices, her footwork… just like going back to her vintage era.
Thank for the upload. 🙏 Do you happen to have Graf v Capriati from this tournament?
They met in Miami, not Indian wells.
@@Rune8119yes, you are right! 👏👏👏
This match would be very interesting to watch. Graf destroyed Capriati.
@@stacked7476 yes, Capriati said after this match that it was the best that Graf had ever played against her which is why I am interested see it.
gran actuación de Lucic, llegar a Semis de Wimbledon, por otro lado Steffi siempre dominante el Césped!
I remember watching tjis match live on Spanish TV at night. Steffi had beaten Huber very easy in the semis and Arantxa did so with Coetzer. Anticipated final with Graf on top ❤
When Natasha was on her game, she could be very difficult to stop. Just ask Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario and Gabriela Sabatini. In the 1st round, Natasha got by Arantxa in a tight 2-setter and then Natasha disposed of Sabatini in the QF. In fact, Natasha had already beaten Arantxa earlier in 1995. And after several tough losses to Sabatini in previous years, Natasha put it all together to oust Sabatini who was the defending champ at the '95 WTA Championships. Unfortunately for Natasha, she couldn't keep the momentum going and eventually fell to Steffi in the semifinals.
In the Spring of 1993, Steffi seemed to be continuing the steady progress she'd had in autumn 1992. She won here and in Hilton Head and was also a finalists in Miami. She apparently only entered Hilton Head in the hope of playing Monica Seles to test herself and see what level she was at. But Monica was in the middle of what was then the longest absence for any world #1 (before the stabbing), and didn't play after her loss to Navratilova in Paris in February until her return in Hamburg in April. It meant that in the 12 months leading up to the stabbing, Steffi had actually won more tournaments than Monica, which is the reason why she got the #1 ranking back so quickly after Monica couldn't defend her French Open title.
True. 9 for Graf vs 8 for Seles over that period of time but from the top 5 Graf had 1 and Seles 4. I didn’t know the background on Hilton Head. Thanks for sharing
Спасибо, Ваши слова лишь подтверждают, что Штеффи играла по нарастающей в 1993 году . Думаю, что и без нападения Штеффи стала бы в скором времени первой, оттеснив Селеш. Кризис у Штеффи был пройден.
I thought Steffi was a late entry it Hilton as Seles had pulled out. Steffi usually skipped this one in favour of Amelia Island the following week. I do think Steffi has started to understand what she needed to do against Seles and it would have been an interesting 93 season. She never lost to Gaby again after Amelia island 92. Good fact sharing about the amount of tournament wins from both. One always thought Seles would have had a bigger lead as held 3 out of the 4 slams.
I think it was after this exhibition Sabatini said she thought Steffi could easily return to the wta tour without missing a beat? That's very high praise from Sabatini, she didn't play that badly here but no way Steffi was gong to lose this match in basically her own backyard. Just wish we could have seen both girls play some exhibitions against Arantxa and Jana before she passed.
At some point the commentators say that Monica could win the Grand Slam if she were able to pass the grass exam, whereas in the men field they could not envision anyone winning the Grand Slam. Monica sure would have won in 93 :'(
It's a pity these two didn't meet more often. They both have such beautiful style of play. Great reflexes by both players in this match. A quality match despite the lopsided score.
this was the golden age of women tennis
Steffi got her revenge from the prev yr loss to Martina. I gotta hand it to Martina. I may not agree with some of her stances off the court, but there's no denying she changed the game for the better.
In the first half of 1994 Steffi's level of her game was as good as ever (might be her best ever) but suddenly that slump happened in the second half mainly due to her back pain.
Yes especially after sending innocent Seles to trauma, with the help of her basterd fan . She did so well.
@@cyriljacob4839again came those Seles's nutters fan. Seles was fit enough to play 1993 us open according to her doctor & ny times article but she choose to stay back at home.
I think Steffi's losses in 1994 proved that her win or loss could happen depending on her physical and mental issues. As you all know without Seles in 1994 Steffi won just 1 slam. So saying that Seles was the one who stopped Steffi from winning slams didn't make any sense. The real obstacles that could prevent her from wining were her dad's scandal and injuries.
Absolutely well said. Steffi was clearly distracted by her father's extramarital affair with nude model & blackmail scandal. That's clearly hampered her game. Remember Steffi at that time was losing to Sabatini literally every time (1-7 h2h) including 5 consecutive times against her, losing to ASV (infact ASV bagelled her in 1991 F.O SF ), losing to the likes of Garrison & Novotna. But even in that slump Seles hardly dominate Steffi infact on Steffi's favourite surface like indoor & grass she got blown away by her.
I agree...Steffi played the best of her tennis in that first half of 1994....also probably in the first half of 1995 after her comeback from injury which made her miss the Australian Open won by Mary Pierce.
I remember reading the paper saying that the way Mojoli played was similar to Seles’s. Do you agree and what is the similarity between them?
They both had to bend a little bit to hit Graf’s sliced backhand? I don’t know. Seles was unique as she played with both hands on both wings. Majoli had one handed forehand.
Both played Bolletieri style 😊
@@funky69funky34and came from ex Yugoslavia
Majoli got very nice width on the backhand and handled the slice well.
Iva was never able to trouble Steffi. She just loved the pace Iva gave her on the ball.
Mary had such power & is very friendly & charismatic. Great for promoting women's tennis. And stunningly gorgeous too
I think this 1998 and not 1999
11:54 stunning topspin backhand by Steff
Like l mentioned earlier with another match involving Mary Pierce if the other player is trying to exclusively slice on the backhand side it's going to be tough. Mary Pierce like many had several issues , injuries and problems that got in the way of her success. But when she was clicking it was scary.
Arrantxa play horrible tenía, not power not atack not service just come to all the shoots
Great to watch. Never a dull moment with La Pierce. Gawd, she could be breathtaking.
I think she won against Steffi post 1996 mostly by throwing in moonball and topspins that bored Steffi to death.
Final! Why was Graf so calm? no even happily smile.
What??? She had a nice smile at the end!
Muy agradable juego de Steffi. Pudo ganar este partido
OH the footwork Iga like steffi
While she was coached by Gavin Hopper, Amanda really improved upon not only her fitness but her anticipation and court positioning looked better too. At least until 1998 when she and Gavin parted ways.
