Sizzix Big Shot Tips for Cutting Thin Lite Dies the Easy Way

  • I purchased a Sizzix Big Shot for cutting my Thin Lite dyes. I had 2 issues. One was that the plates seemed too thick and the other was with the paper sticking in the tiny parts of the dyes. For the issue with cutting I used the cutting sheet I made for the Texture Boutique. Here is the link for that tutorial.

And as far as the sticking paper I saw that others were using dryer sheets and cutting the dryer sheets along with the paper . But I discovered a trick that I like even better. I used a dryer sheet but not like you think.

I just found this video and it fixed a problem I was having with some thinlit dies that weren’t cutting properly. I used your mats trick and the dryer sheets. They all worked awesome! Thanks so much for posting this!

Thak you so much. I went from having a box of dies I never used to having the cuts turn out perfectly.

Thanks for this, I'm glad I'm not the only one with Big Shot problems! I've had the same issues to the point where I was going to return my machine. To those that are saying "it's supposed to make those awful noises", this is not just about it cutting into the plastic plates. When I follow the instructions, the top clear plate buckles and arches and just will not go through. When I try to force it through, it really does feel like it's about to break. There have been a couple of occasions where I've managed to push down on the top clear plate when it's arching but it made such a horrible bang, that I never did it again. I've read other posts where people have said that their machine (also bought in the last year) had cracked underneath. I don't want to risk that! I'm ordering a cheap cutting mat right away to see if that will work for me - thanks again!

Brilliant, thank you. PVC sheet is also a good protection against the cutting marks, and as you’ve discovered, a slightly thinner sandwich, maybe with a double pass through the machine, spares your cutting mats.
If they do warp on you, in your sink, in a flat oven tray, cover them in boiling water and cool for 20 mins with a weight on top. If the weight is another big pan full of boiled water that’s good, because it keeps the heat going longer. This allows a gentle melting and reshaping. You do need the weight. DO NOT put in oven with more dry heat because the plastic will off gas and poison you! But boiling temp is ok, it seems. I make no claim for the chemistry, no warranty or guarantee for safety and obviously be careful handling
pans of recently boiled water, you could scald yourself, but I’ve seen this done by a scientific person who gave that warning, so that’s good enough for me. Please make your own decision. What I saw was it returned the plates back to being flat! And released fluff from all the little cuts, so cleaner too. Nice!

Thank you for sharing this great idea, I'm going to give a try. The cutting mat you said you got at the dollar store, was that the kind you use for cutting vegetables and food items?

Can you send me the link on how to create the platform piece you made for cutting thin die cuts? I was told you should not use a metal shim with the big shot plus, so this would be a great replacement for the metal shim.

It's supposed to cut into the cutting plate. They get cut and ugly, but work fine!!
