1993年8月19日に東京の両国国技館で行なわれたスーパーファミコン版スト２ターボ全国大会のビデオ（VHS）です。全国各地のゲームショップで行われた大会の優勝者や抽選（葉書など）に当たったプレイヤー約7000人が東京の両国国技館に集結しました。
パッドはスーパーファミコン純正のものが使われ、ボタン設定がデフォルトのままだったので、大パンチがＬボタン・大キックがＲボタンなど操作に制限があったのもこの大会の特徴です。

Watching this brings me tears. My younger early 90's self would never believe we would be able to watch games tournaments on our everyday gadget anytime and anywhere. It's been a long way since those nostalgic days.

my friend matthew won a nintendo 64 on release day in 1996 in brooklyn new york. by winning the street fighter alpha (local) tournament at bulletproof comics using SODOM of all characters.

SFIITurbo was thee only game that mattered in my small northern English town in the SNES heyday. (well and Mario Kart) We used to have tournaments at each other's houses, even outside on nice days, set the TV up, put shade over the TV so we could see it and man it was on! All the best players from my town would battle it out and I have such fond memories, but God dam if you didn't have game at SFII they you were a nobody, you wasn't getting any smelly fingers off girls or nothing! Such a nostalgic time being a young teenager when the SNES came out, it has to be my favourite console not just for the incredible games but the time I put into that console and the friends I made through gaming. This is a awesome upload btw even though I have not a jot about what's being said but I appreciate the upload so thanks very much!

@Dutch Predator No, it's sf2. When sf2 came out, FF was still a game were you pick 3 characters and only played a arcade, no verse. As a high level 98/02um player, I can safely say that SF2 is the most significant fighting game of all time and without it, those games won't exist.

I miss the 90s, i was 12 when sf2 was doing the rounds it was massive, every Amusements i walked into as a kid had wall to wall of sf2 coinops absolutely love this game, i own the original sf2ce coinop from the day its my pride and joy anf also own every sf2 jamma arcade pcb now including hyper Street fighter 2, bloody live and breath this game even after all these years, can't believe where the times gone though, 42 now unbelievable, so happy to be born at the right time the 90s was the best decade for gaming it all kicked off then.

Legal é que os participantes estavam nitidamente se divertindo, rindo quando perdiam, se falavam... Bem diferente de hoje, que tem essas tretas e rivalidades, com casos de quase tendo briga real entre os caras. Fico abismado com esses combos do Street 2. Sou fã desse jogo desde moleque.
Ali eles não estão disputando porra nenhuma, não vale nada, não é cenário competitivo, não recebem porra nenhuma, é literalmente por diversão. Com 18 já estão na universidade e seguem a vida.

You could just tell through the body language who was going to win the final. The guy playing Ryu was hunched over and was saying "I'm sleepy" and the Sagat player was completely alert and confident.

Man I didn't know they had tournaments like this back then. That's awesome, I remember as a kid growing up in the 90's, everytime I went to the video store I always rented street fighter, because I was Soo obsessed with it that was the only game I ever rented more than anything else. Good old days
Japan is where the games were actually conceived and developed. It's not at all surprising that they would hold tournaments.
No surprise to see the champion using Sagat, he has great moves and reach.
Bear in mind, this port of Hyper Fighting was only released 39 days earlier.
That doesn't mean much, we were already doing these combos when figured out all the special moves, because there was no internet or a guide book showing inputs. Tomo Ohira was the best SF player in the world at the time and was winning all the tournaments in 1991-1994 at age 13. quit the game at 16. He still could been the best if he stayed around, but he and many of the OG hated Super Street Fighter 2 so they quit as well. Everyone in this video would have been crushed by anyone in the top 20 leader board. Jeff Shaffer destroyed prime Daigo at ST and got 8 to 9 perfects on him and won 13 to 14 sets out of the 20 they played. Bear in mind ST isn't Jeff's game and was retired from SF for 10 years at that point. All of you need to learn your history! Oh one last thing, the better player were playing game game centers in Tokyo, not SNES version of the game! LOL!

I have in no way claimed that these were top players. I merely stated a fact.
Whilst you’re unimpressed, I think that they managed to get to these levels without the internet, TH-cam tutorials, endless credits (in the arcade) is a testament to how much kids in the 90’s loved SF- and I’m certainly one of them.
Jeff, Tomo and Mike were amazing, I don’t think I disputed that anywhere…
You have an excellent memory however it’s not quite perfect regarding the sets that Jeff played against Daigo. They played over 30 with Daigo destroying Jeff over the first 12-15, then they ran even and then for the last 4-5 games, Jeff was dominant.
What was uploaded on TH-cam was incomplete and gave a skewed narrative of how the matches went.
I got my information directly from Jeff himself so, there’s no dispute as to its validity.
That’s not to say Jeff wasn’t outstanding that day- he most certainly was but it wasn’t as one sided as you’ve claimed.
Now, could Tomo have been the best ever?
Quite possibly but being excellent at CPS1 games doesn’t mean you’ll be great at any other games.
Look at Old Mastah- he was probably the best HF player in the world and he retired Jeff from FightCade but he’s nothing in ST.
Also- don’t forget, Mike Watson played Kurahashi and got perfected by his Guile back in 2000/2001. Sure, it was a Sawna JLF stick but he lost badly in his matches- and it wasn’t that he was missing inputs- his understanding of the game wasn’t as developed as his opponent’s.
The thing about Daigo, is that he is excellent in *every* game.
Regardless of whether he enjoys the game or not- he’s an expert in all of the Street Fighter games whilst Tomo was an expert in CE and HF.
Don’t forget- Tomo lost badly to a 9 year old in SFIV- albeit Noah was top 32 at Evo.
@@TwistedSoul2002 I was there at FF when the matches when down. Maybe my memory of what happened could be off, but i remember 20 sets and Jeff took more than half. Also, about Tomo losing to Noah, come on. that was a charity event and Tomo never took SF4 seriously. He quit SF all together. I was lucky enough to watch all of them play at WFC during the golden era. Tomo was doing things that we never though were possible he was and still is the best ever. Daigo is great, but he's a try hard and tired for a short time. Now about the Mike situation, I felt the American teams pain. I went to Japan in 1999 to play in a small tournament, and I remember I couldn't use their sticks. I did well, but I could have done way better if I had my perfect 360. Which I still use to this day today, except i use fusion American style concave buttons that uses Sanwa microswitches. I think Maybe John, OG Ken, Mike, and Me and maybe Ducdo are the last to use the American style fightstick. Also I think you forgot Valle in that same event in 2000 took out 4 out of the 5 gods of ST during that time. I know Mike didn;t win a match at all. John did okay. I don't know Seth was there. Also, really? Old Mastah?? He is great and all, but he is no Tomo, and he played a 20 year old tired Jeff. They put in their work. We are all old now, those golden days are over, but i still do just fine here in Tokyo. So Daigo hasn't won anything major in terms of SFV, i personally don't like that game at all it is Marvel lite with easy combos, but still my point even Daigo is getting old he can't be on top forever. He was destroyed by an OG that day a tired one at that prime Daigo got rocked. Too bad FF is gone, that place had a lot of strong fighters come out of there in the later years before the arcade scene died.

Yeah real lucky as in what games came out. but it wasn't the best you had to pay to play every match wait you're turn and couldn't play these games at home until console release years later. while now you buy these games play them for however long you want without having to pay for every match and can play with people from around the world. it was cool at the time but let's be honest it sucked ass back then compared to now

Great memories from the 90's. I remember winning 500 deutsche Mark (about 250 Euros) 1995 in a tournament that was held in a disco. It wasnt a classic tournament setting and the rule was, the one who is champion at 12 o clock gets all the prize money. So there was always one champion and all the others could challenge. You had to pay a few bucks to challenge the current champion - think it was 5 deutsche Mark - and if you won, you got challenged by others.
But i have to admit i probably wouldnt have won against these players on the video. They were higher level. Back in the mid 90's i didnt even have internet and i missed a lot of high level strategies for SF2.
I remember playing the Snes USA version of Street Fighter II Turbo Hyper Fighting.

In 2004 I finally made it to Japan and played street fighter in one of those multi-level arcades in Tokyo. I versed and beat a guy too.

This brought back memories. I was one of the early street fighter kids and participated in a lot of local tournaments in NYC in CE, Hyper Fighting, and Turbo. It's funny to read the amazement that people have that the same tactics they use today are the tactics that started here. I never really changed my style of play since 1992 (other than things like incorporating supers and super combos and learning new matchups) and I was an effective tournament level Street Fighter all the way through CVS2.
The arcades around me all closed after that so I never tried the games that came CVS2, but from the videos it still very much looks like the same game today.
It is except the floor is lower on newer games because of dumbed-down mechanics. But that just makes it easier for pro-level players to dominate ironically (for the most part).
If you can get yourself a gaming pc and get into emulating and when you're ready lookup fightcade.

Yeah he was really really good. His timing and zoning was on point plus he throw fakes to his opponent.
One technique I notices he would do to throw a crouching punch to baits his opponent and once they drop at him he does the tiger-uppercut.
It is what it is. The Ryo guy was still amazing in the other matches too.

@@thaitran4527 I’m from USA bro. It more likely started when that game first came around. I’ve always grew up on mortal kombat and in my household with my father and brother we would never grab, we always felt it was a cheap way to hurt an opponent since you have moves that have overhead starters

I remember the day when I would look for coins near park benches so I can play Streetfighter 1 in the late 80's. One fireball took almost half the life of the opponent. Oh, those were the days.

It's unbelievable how much of a revolution this game created. Keep in mind Street Fighter II was just released in 1991. By 1993 it was already a world sensation with tournaments in every continent.
It took over the world. And fighting games were never the same after SF II. Even the legendary King of Fighters saga (in my opinion way better in terms or complexity and competitiveness) paid homage making a representation of Ryu and Ken with Kyo and Iori.
How was this particular video intended to be watched? Was it televised? Many say StarCraft was the first televised eSport.
