Hi Chris. Great video, much appreciated. Straight to the point and the fingering chart was precisely what I needed. If you are still considering requests, I would love a video review of the styles and differences in approach to jazz standards by the classics: Dizzy, Miles, Chet, etc.
As a trombone player learning the trumpet, I cannot tell you how much I appreciated your positions insight. That made everything significantly easier than I was expecting!
I'm new to playing the trumpet and this video alone has helped me progress so much! I've been confused about some of the notes and the chromatic scale in general so thank you for clearing that up!
@@ChrisDavisTrumpet question i just picked up my horn and it hasent been used in a year and all my valves are oiled good and my middle one right now is going down but delaying i oiled it so many times i cheaked for dents theres no dents i also tried oiling from the bottom cap and turning it upside down but nothing is working mind helping me out sir?
Amauri Younger when that happens typically the second valve slide is out of line adding pressure to the second valve. This isn’t always visible to the eye although sometimes it is. If you’re able to release that pressure then the valve should lift up. You may need a repairman.
i'm a trombinsit (from school days) teaching myself trumpeet. i NEVER knew trumpet had 7 positions in the way you are explaining here. And, as a trombonist, this is So helpful! Thanks.
Great video. I just bought a trumpet and appreciate your explanation of this technique. I especially like the muscle memory and metronome tips. Rhythm is where I am a slacker.
Your tutorial has gotten me even more pumped about starting back up after 25 years out! My new trumpet arrives, tomorrow 😍 and I'm so excited to get back down to the nutty gritty, and blow away a few neighbors in the process lol. Thank you so much!
Hi Melissa! We just completed our “Buzzing Challenge” and we had many players that returned after 20-30 years off the horn. It was a great experience! I hope you’ll join us for the next one!
Great video. I learned a lot. I already knew all the notes and fingering from low F# to high F# but I never thought of them as positions. FWIW, I noticed your 3rd valve was sticking a little bit when you were holding the horn in front of the camera going from position 7 to 1.
Stephen McGrew sorry but I don’t know what FWIW represents. What does that stand for? But, yes, my trumpet is still pretty new and I wasn’t washing the valves as often as a new horn needs to washed. But yeah about the positions.... I was teaching a brass class some years ago when I finally realized the positions were the same on trumpet and trombone. It can be helpful to know that especially if you’re teaching in a classroom situation. Thanks for reaching out!
@@ChrisDavisTrumpet FWIW = For What It's Worth : ) You're video is very helpful. I appreciate being able to look at the finger positions in a different way. With time and practice, it should come natural I suppose. It's like when I learned to type. At first I had to think about where every key is located in order to spell the words. But in time, that went away and my fingers learned where they needed to go without having to think about it. It's probably the same thing with Trumpet. I'm teaching myself Trumpet right now; that's why I'm watching TH-cam videos. I'm using the piano as a guide to the trumpet. Because I know all the major and minor scales on the piano, I made a chart of the piano keys for the full range of the Trumpet and wrote the trumpet fingering for each note on each piano key. So if I want to play a scale, I just look at that chart and I can see the scale and what fingering is necessary. Kind of an easy way to teach myself scales and arpeggios. I've memorized the whole chart, so I don't have to look at it anymore. Soon I'll have to do some sight reading though.
5:04 I'm transferring from the trombone to the trumpet, and I'm just confused why going down the chromatic scale is as simple as 1-7, but going up skips 6 & 7. Is that supposed to happen, if so, why?
Going from G to C skips 6&7 but going for C to G does not. G to C is only 5 half step, but C to G is 7 half steps. Edit: assuming you are going up the scale in both cases
It is for this reason that it is possible to play any note with any fingering you'd like in the upper register (although it may be out of tune). The notes are soooo close. Study the harmonic series! Great observation and great question!
Hey @Chris Davis, I love the design of your horn... is that custom build or is there a brand making them. The combinations of matt gold and silver and those tuning rings... I also like the finish and the size of the instrument. I am an industrial designer so I see those things, and make me wonder :D. enlighten me please
Yes, absolutely! Ideally, you would want to use the same fingering as usual but while you're learning it is possible to use 1-2-3 combination and bend down to the goal notes from that position.
On this particular video, I believe that I used the Perception 220 by AKG 🔌 into my Zoom H5 for both my voice and 🎺. I had to manually turn the gain up for my voice and down for the trumpet. What do you use?
I Play Edwards X-13. I can't say what flugel is made for a beginner but Yamaha makes a solid intermediate horn. Edwards flugelhorn is incredible too but I'd say that it is a pro horn.
I don't understand. Same position is beeing used for the same note but in different octaves. There was an octave interval between the notes C you played but you used the same position for both!!!
What video topic would you like me to record next?
