Hi Nick and Terysa, thank you for your 'vlogs', enjoy them very much, avid follower. I have sailed some myself (far from as much as you unfortunately) and I like your respect for the elements and your 'cautious' approach to sailing. That said I was a bit surprised that you chose to take down the sails and motor the last of this episode's leg and would love to hear more about the reasoning behind this decision. When I am out I actually feel safer sailing than motoring, motors can fail, sales rarely, and sailing 'sets' the boat more stable and safely in the water/waves (please note that I only have experience from monohulls). Fair winds!
Sound is great! I can hear you just fine and the wind noise in the background is not distorted noise. Near perfect. After watching hundreds of sailing videos I'm really tired of the solution to wind noise being canned music. And in my rookie sailing experience, it's so remarkable that when you're doing a close reach how you feel and hear the wind, but in a broad reach same conditions the same wind seems to disappear. And I always enjoy wind and sail set talk.
We chartered a Seawind 1160 for 2 weeks in the Whitsundays at the end of 2019 because my partner wants to live on a boat but I wasn't so sure about it. He has lots of motor boat experience but neither of us had ever sailed before. The day we picked up the cat was just like your video except that it was rough right in to the mooring area outside the marina. We go our beginner's lesson on how to sail a cat in rough, windy conditions and then motored all the way over to Hook Island. It was rough and rolly, but I was pleasantly surprised at how comfortable the trip was. Thankfully we got some good opportunities to try sailing for the first time in easier conditions during our trip. And I'm happy to say that I'm now just as keen as my partner to live aboard a cat... now we just have to find the right one to buy :) Thanks for providing me with insight and inspiration while we're still in our planning phase.
It must be deeply satisfying to set sail, face and overcome a challenging passage and spend the evening watching a stunning sunset from a secluded coral beach sipping chilled beer. A special kind of freedom! Oh, and the mic certainly passed the wind test :)
Funnel Bay is at the entrance to Pioneer Bay in the Whitsundays is called that for a reason. The wind always funnels through there. Then you probably had wind against tide across the Whitsunday Passage. The Whitsundays has a big tidal range, so it always pays to know which way the tide is flowing, to make a more pleasant sailing experience.
For the most part the audio was fine Terysa, a few instances where the wind noise threatened to overpower your voice but in broadcast you learn to expect that when shooting outdoors!
Awww...can't believe you doused your sails. Sailing the Whitsundays is all about enjoying the QLD wind and a solid sail before anchoring each day. Sure there's some PUFF there but get settled, find a sweet spot in sail area and roll with it. I absolutely LOVE the breeze and rolling seas there! Magic!
As Shawn D. said, I too have watched thousands of hours of you vloggers on sailing vessels and have no idea what it takes to sail but I have thoroughly enjoyed every tense moment or monumental sunset and wish I could be there with you even if I was just a fly on the wall. I am looking forward to see more of the Whitsunday Islands as I will be cruising near there in 2023.
Yep just another day in North Queensland. Typical weather/wind in the region and as you go up the coast. I lived in Townsville for 5 years and I loved the fact that around 10-10:30am every morning the sea wind would pick up and come in over the shore and start to cool things down. Throw open the windows of your house with a cool drink in hand and relax. Nice episode, but WAY too short. 👍
Glad you guys are back! MissTerysa, I absolutely love your country, and have not been in 32 years, thank you for sharing. Nick, I love your allusions, and very descriptive self assessments.
I have watched literally thousands of hours of sailing over Covid on a half dozen YT channels and still have no idea how sailboats work. This tour of Aussie though is amazing and you do a great job of sharing it.
Ah, the Whitsundays! These episodes will make up for our charter that didn't happen. We're Kiwis who had two charters there in 2013 and 2015. We were booked for the first week of August 2020, which then moved to 2021, but delays in vaccinations and the on-off Australian Covid situation meant we had to pull the plug - also we'd have had to pay $3000 each for quarantine on our return to NZ. So we'll pour a large drink and watch you guys instead...
It's been a windy year for us. we went out a couple of weeks ago, stayed in the marina at hamo overnight, and it was magical, (power boat). I'm waiting for the wind to drop again, but not in the short term by the look of it.
Great stuff! Two jobs I'd have to do though. Take that flag down and fix the wind gauge. You can't sail by numbers without numbers. I'd either shin up the mast or take the boat back. You've got a month and it's going to be a constant pain otherwise.
Great video, remember you have big tides and tidal flows up there. So it’s good to know where they are when the wind is up a little. The sea state can be a bit of a surprise under those conditions.
Don't stress about the wind sound, after all...you are on a sailboat, ya know? Sounds fine. You do such a great job with the filming and editing that the wind noise really isn't anything to worry about. I am looking forward to this series. If ya gotta count the days til RR2 is delivered there are certainly worse places you could be stuck doing it!
You are coming thru very clear, there is background wind noise. Another fun video, not trying to learn to sail, I just love seeing the sea or country you visit.😎🇺🇸🧜♀️⚓️
Apart from the sailing experience, Im totally loving seeing the different aspects of Australia guys, are you free to sail anywhere or restricted, Im hearing there are covid travel restrictions in parts of Australia ! Stay safe and keep up the great work.
With respect to the mic there was some wind noise but in my view, acceptable ambient sound giving the viewer an understanding that it was blowing like stink. That said, if you were not using a wind sock then that addition would, I think be a positive, although not necessary addition. I found Nick's comment about equipment on the 1260 that you had determined you needed or would like on the 1370 really interesting and hope that you can include similar comments on future episodes. The research that you two did was outstanding but there is nothing like being on a boat which resembles your own to figure these things out while changes are still possible. Hopefully, in this respect, the Covid delays will actually be of help to you.
Hey rowdy there it was like that all the way up the Queensland coast for us glad that you’ve shown that , got to say that it’s not Our most Favourite area to sail in .
I realise you've already commissioned Ruby Rose II but your cat review series was so informative and viewed by so many people, I wonder if you have any plans to do a review series for the 'perfect blue water monohull' for a live aboard couple.
The mic was pretty good for those conditions, the sail looked a bit challenging (as Nick would say). That beach was mind-blowing, I've never seen a beach that was covered in coral like that. I know some smarty pants out there is going to say all sand is coral, blah, blah, blah, but I've seen my fair share of beaches and never seen one with that level of coral on it, awesome. Always love the videos thanks.
I’ve become totally hooked on cat videos since watching your reviews leading up to choosing the Seawind. We were up at Magnetic Island a few months back and there was a 1260 anchored out in the bay, that of course I noticed, and I’m sure it was Pirate Pete.
I'm looking forward to the next episodes. I chartered a boat in the Whitsundays during my trip in Australia in 2018. Those five days were the highlight of the trip!
It's been a while since I've seen one of your videos. And been a while since we met in the BVI. Glad you guys are still out and about doing it all. We have been doing some cat research lately for our next adventure but our budget is more of the used and abused side. Carly (sailing saltykisses from Nanny Cay)
Welcome to the Whitsundays - and be advised some of the bullets of the top of the hills can seriously upset your day. (best diving to be found on the NW sector of any island - away from the prevailing SE wind and waves
How do you charter a Yatch for a couple of months ?? without it costing a bomb ??? Just did a 12 day Whistsunday on a Lagoon 40 Chantilly and you could buy a boat for what it cost for a couple of months ??
Yes a vigorous sail...Interesting during the blasting wind, I didn't see either of you hanging on for dear life... Testimonial to the nature of the Seawind perhaps...
Ok, cat noob question here: compared to a monohull (or not if easier), how do you notice that the boat is overpowered? Heeling? Running out the rudders? Drift? Re. Power winches: I would install some sort of power/amp gauge to it so that you can not only hear but also see what's happening. Maybe even a simple bar or LEDs.
Hey Rob, we are still too new to this to give you a definite answer. Leeway would definitely increase, but I’m not sure that you would notice it by feel. It would be more a function of plotting. We are still happily learning as we go along, so will keep you informed as we go
@@sailingrubyrose OK thanks, I'll just wait patiently while you find out. I'm really curious about it. Like; what happened that made you decide to put the extra reef in... Sailing a cat, to me, is like operating a nuclear reactor. I know what parts are there and what it should do I just lost the user manual.
I'm no expert but the 1160 we hired in the Whitsundays became a bit "unmanageable". There's no feel through the wheel (no weather helm?) so the boat felt as if it was losing grip and being pushed around. We eased the main and turned away from the wind (both these things "depower" the boat) and it went back to feeling smooth and connected to the water. We were definitely "lifting" a hull (15-20 cm) and so it was probably just losing grip in a random way as we rocked and rolled over the swell. It was a great way to learn about sailing a cruising cat. I also owned a 16' Hobie. When it was overpowered the pull on the rudder was simply to great to hold onto for any length of time. Highly recommend the Whitsundays and hiring a boat there. You can just motor from place to place if you want or, on the right day, you can get a good sail going on. Lots of issues to manage as the tides are strong(ish), the wind can be vigorous, there's reefs to avoid, other boats to deal with and so on. We seem to have had a fairly intense education in a week. NB. Our 1160 had fairly short dagger boards.
Sailed cats in whitsunday for many years, basicly for 2 major indicators for me is the cat slipping down the wind and the windward hull starts to lift. I used to a race a 35 foot race cat and it used tillers so you could feel the boat which you cant really get on a helm
I don't remember your using the motors so much on RR1. One of the reasons I like to sail is that I am cheap and hearing engines when there is wind is like blowing cash out into the water. It's painful for a poor guy. However, I have noticed that many of the sailing YT shows motor a lot. Happy Trails
Tired !!!! After a half a day sail !!!! Nick, your getting soft mate !! Relaxing lounging around while Teresa works her tail off....Your starting to look like Buddha !!! lol. Whats the confusion you did the right thing you reffed then you dropped the main and motored....Better to be safe mate. God forbid anything happens before you get your new cat !!!! I enjoyed this one you had great weather. Good job Nick
“Thongs, to my fellow Australians.” When she said that I suddenly realized why called them that growing up in Alaska. My parents had an Aussie friend who would visit occasionally. I had to of picked that up from him. Just one of those things you never think about until someone makes an off the cuff comment. 😀
Thanks for your video! Interesting how lack of one piece of kit can make life more difficult. Beautiful Australia - never got to the Whitsundays (travelled mostly around NSW, Victoria, SA) remember the spectacular sunsets on land - I always thought it was just because you got to see more horizon than in Britain (where there's always a building or something in the way, but perhaps it's just Australia. In tems of your poll etc. you did what you thought was the right thing to keep the boat and yourself safe, you can't judge that based on a video, it's going to be context specific in terms of your own experience level, how comfortable you are with the boat and a host of other factors - how long the fix will be where you expect to be. I suppose the lesson here is to have spares for your anenometer on your new boat:-)! Have a great sail!
Hello As I would like to buy a 1260 I was interested in the two main sleeping accommodation. How easy is it too get in and out of beds. To me it would be like waking up in a coffin. It looks like there is very little clearance. In the other cabin does the person sleeping next to the hull have to get out to let the person sleeping in the Middle of the boat.get out. .
Having to look around the salon must drive y’all crazy. Yea, l know you can look through the salon and salon windows but on a beautiful day I’d want wind in my hair sitting at the helm. Y’all should have bought the Balance 442. I’ll bet Seawind gave you a sweet deal otherwise you’d be on a Balance 😄
Great sound quality guys. Im a massive fan of the Whitsundays, hope your enjoying it. Regarding the boat, I do like the Seawind brand, but I reckon the 1370 and 1600 are better than the 1100 or 1200 series. Mainly because of the galley up design.
A challenging sail. The new microphone works a treat. It really cuts the wind noise to very tolerable level, I could hear every word. What type and brand are you using?
Used to be beautiful sand until Cyclone Deb destroyed the reef directly off the beach, it was also a beautiful dive but that's nature. we crossed paths when you filmed this, the winds and weather was a little abnormal, compared to what we have seen over the last nine years sailing at that location at that time of year.
Sailed the Whitsundays in early June in an Seawind 1160 Lite. Lots of 25 knots. Got 10.2 knots on a reach. Easily achieved 6-7knots, just cruising around. Coral may be a product of Cyclone Debbie?
I'm guessing this was early July when the fresh to strong south easters can blow for days on end in the Whitsundays. Also that you were on a flood tide so you had that wind against a few knots of tide in the Whitsunday Channel. It gets really uncomfortable in these conditions. The tides are the main challenge in that area and you have to plan around them. Hope you got to Gulnare Inlet. The entrance is too shallow for most monohulls so, if you can get in, you can have it almost to yourself.
Sailing in the Whitsundays has been challenging for the last three weeks although winds are forecast to abate later this week, hope to see you out there somewhere.
Hey guys, What are you most looking for on the 1370 that the 1260 lacks or doesn't have? Do you really thing there will be a lot of difference between the two now that you have spent some good time on a new 1260? Take care.
not sure why you picked blue pearl bay for your first stop over. Its mainly over rated because its got good reef to snorkle around for the tourists,. amazing to see you had the place to yourselves. normally unheard of. What date were you doing this charter ? Whitsundays is my fav place to hangout , I hope it will be for you also...Cheers
Blue Pearl Bay anchorage? Exact same conditions we had on our first transit across to Nara Inlet. Props to you guys hitting out to Hayman on Day one. Looking forward to the rest of these. We went in 2019 and same time of year. It was same temps. Will go at warmer time of year next time - water was delicious though.
"You sail with your ears" ... very good point and very often lost on people. love your honesty !! Stay Safe & Fair Winds !!
Best mic I've ever heard. No obtrusive wind noises, just excellent sound.
Nicks giggle at the sunset
So stoked I’m leaving a comment for the algorithm alone! That being said, Nick! Drink more beer. 🤙🏼🍻
Sounds good & can hear you well. You can still hear wind but it's not causing any bad over modulation from the wind.
That's the windy Whitsundays for you. Extra specially good with SE wind against south flooding tide!!
A sunset ties us and releases us from the day. The best star we know : - ) x

It’s not just my cup of tea, it’s the whole bloody teapot 👍
cheers to that!

Audio is fine, I can hear you fine with the wind in the background.
Whitsundays look beautiful.
I agree. Considering the wind, it's amazing you could be heard at all.
Those bullets coming off the hills are always pretty wild. you eventually get to learn where they are though.
Your music choices really are superb👏

Wow, have I missed it before or have you totally upped your game with the intro. Great quality video, thanks!
Haha welcome to the trade winds!! The best part of the Whitsundays is South of Shaw. There are some magnificent anchorages without the crowds.
Glad you guys are back! MissTerysa, I absolutely love your country, and have not been in 32 years, thank you for sharing. Nick, I love your allusions, and very descriptive self assessments.

I need those!!

Love your videos love you two

Hiya. Please please can you tell me what your beach chairs are when you are sitting on the coral beach? They look awesome 👌

7.7 Knots seems slow for that boat in that wind. Taking it easy cause of the seas? Great Video. Really enjoyed it. Mushroom infused Wizard. LOL
Slow for such a great boat. A course on how to sail such fast cruising cats may be a good idea.

In the other cabin does the person sleeping next to the hull have to get out to let the person sleeping in the Middle of the boat.get out.
.
Ha! No one can ever believe how windy it can be in the Whitsundays. Trade wind sailing. Head to the southern group
Great video guys....sailing looked wild!.....as evidenced by Nick looking like he'd gone 3 rounds with Giant Haystacks! 😁
Until the weather turns foul
@@Corey-pd3mi on the Balance at the helm you simply lower the wheel and close the helm top. Easy and fast.
Lol , believe me when I say that’s an average day when the sth easterly wind gets going up here !!
Nice one! Yeah not sure about the coral situation
Nick the wizard…🙂
I'm guessing this was early July when the fresh to strong south easters can blow for days on end in the Whitsundays. Also that you were on a flood tide so you had that wind against a few knots of tide in the Whitsunday Channel. It gets really uncomfortable in these conditions. The tides are the main challenge in that area and you have to plan around them. Hope you got to Gulnare Inlet. The entrance is too shallow for most monohulls so, if you can get in, you can have it almost to yourself.
Maybe soon you can see a big Crock 14' or better as you are getting close the there home lands. Just a word of warning. Be safe as always guys.
We loved blue Pearl! Beautiful spot for sunsets but got a bit rolly
Where did the dinghy appear from?
Hi, another great video 👍. Any chance you could include a ‘filmed date’ in the video description?
I wonder if you would prefer the galley up or galley down setup?
Blue Pearl Bay anchorage? Exact same conditions we had on our first transit across to Nara Inlet. Props to you guys hitting out to Hayman on Day one. Looking forward to the rest of these. We went in 2019 and same time of year. It was same temps. Will go at warmer time of year next time - water was delicious though.
Nara is closed for a cull
@@caylieanddavid - a cull?
The Audio is fine it adds some perspective
Cheers
