  • Today's adventure took us to Florence & Penrose, the Prison Capital of America! (October 9, 2022)
William Bent created his first stockade on the Arkansas River near Florence in 1824. Since then the area has gone through an oil boom and gold rush; and is currently famous for being the location of a dozen State and Federal prisons.
My family and I are on a mission to learn about the history and geography of where we live by visiting every town within a 4 hour drive of our house. We live in Pueblo West and once per month we are going to venture out and explore the great state of Colorado, one town at a time!

What is called Pulse Church was Florence High School before the new high school was built on Hwy 67. I graduated from the old high school in 2002. Hard to believe it's a church now.

Thank you for these very, informative videos. During the pandemic, I got out and toured many small Colorado towns, particularly old mining towns. Florence was a nice surprise. Interesting history and a charming downtown without the touristy crowds. I highly recommend the historical museum near the train station on your next visit. It has quite an extensive collection of historical artifacts and photos.
