Honestly, the way he articulates his words and his expansive vernacular, I would pay good money to listen to him cut a commercial for old-timey spirits and drinks. Could you imagine him cutting a commercial for Big Ginger 50/50, Hires Root Beer, Fitz's Cream Soda, Tropical Delite, Good Grape, or Dixi-Cola?

@@OneNewHope original root beer, using actual sassafras roots, was more like black licorice than the super sweet concoction we have now. Regardless, root beer is always sweeter than what is used in Moxie, but root beer is supposed to have the black licorice note to it.
Safrole was banned though so you don't get the genuine root beer flavor anymore these days unless you find a homebrewer with a supply of sassafras.
It makes a great BBQ sauce.
An extract is the thing you draw out of a substance, and an extractive is the stuff left behind. Kind of like sugar and molasses, but with extraction, rather than refinement.

I've been drinking Moxie for at least 55 years. I love the taste and get it when I can. I moved away from Maine many years ago and finally found a source for the original Moxie with sugar as opposed to high fructose corn syrup, at Cracker Barrell in Georgia. You will either love it or hate it.

If you’re doing regional drinks now, try some Ale-8, a Kentucky tradition since the 1920’s.
It’s a ginger citrus soft drink that’s nice on it own and also plays nice with another Kentucky specialty, bourbon.
The first thing I had in Louisville, it was nummy.

I live in Maine and occasionally I'll add whiskey to moxie. But if you wanna be fancy, cherry cordial/brandy and moxie. It just works. Also, you should review Allen's coffee brandy, another Maine staple.

Moxie! It Makes Mainers Mighty! As someone from the great state of Dirigo, however, you're a little off the mark:
This pairs well with an inflated sense of New England Pride. With sweatshirts that say Maine, and simultaneously, baseball caps with with a lobster on it. It pairs well with both buttered lobster, *and* Allen's Coffee Brandy. Figure that one out. Also pairs well with snowblower oil and frostbite.
Who would be drinking this? Hungover lobstermen at the Eastport Denny's at 4 AM on a Thursday immediately following a dock dispute at the wharf which ended with at least one gunshot, and a lot of insults involving the other party of being from out of state. USM dropouts showing their friends from "away" how kitsch and unique Maine is, as if to prove to point. People who are vacationing to Maine, and want to experience the 'culture', as it were, then save the (plastic) bottle as a display piece for the mantle, right next to their souvenir of an animatronic singing lobster that plays the parody song "Dirigo Again On My Own".
I give it a 77, which is also the last good college football year the USM Blackbears have ever had.

If you can’t find Moxie, put a few dashes of Angostura bitters in a Coke and you’ll get a decent idea of what it tastes like. I’m on the west coast where Moxie is very hard to find but they do occasionally have it at Cost Plus World Market.

Moxie is deliciousness in a bottle! If you don't like it, it's because you don't like the taste gentian root adds to the beverage, and you should probably avoid anything else containing gentian root as well.

Love this drink and I am not even from Maine.
I make my "OWN" Moxie by putting 3 or 4 dashes of Angostura bitters in a nice cold glass of Coca Cola. The gentian in the Angostura makes a very refreshing copy! There's also Orange Angostura for experimenting.
You should do a Smorgasvein! It's elegantly cultural.
There is a group called the Moxie Congress and a Moxie festival. Try Moxie jelly on hotdogs, it's great.

Went to a family reunion in Maine (I live in California), I asked, "Who here has tried Moxie?" A majority of my family said they hated the taste compared to the country wide brands.
I scoured the towns of Portland and Cape Elizabeth for it. Luckily our branch family found a case in two locations in Cape Elizabeth. Corner type market place stores.
i don't know if i said it anywhere before, but you should totally review a smoker's cough shot. if you can get through that swish test and not projectile vomit everywhere, it'd be a huge accomplishment... (you did survive malort, right? this wouldn't be as bad as that).

I want to see a baijiu review. I enjoy Moxie (great with Gosling’s Rum), grappa, Malort, black licorice, anchovies. Liver and spinach? One of my favorite meals. But baijiu? I can’t get it past my nose. So see how you deal with that!
