  • Following many requests from viewers, I made a video of some of the many and varied edible plants found in the sand dunes and estuary of my home county of Carmarthenshire ,West Wales, UK,this is not the whole list of edible plants we have ,but just a snapshot of what I found while taking my son Dafydds' Golden Retriever "Llew" for an hours walk (and swim ) ! We are really fortunate to have such a diverse range of plants and wildlife here in Wales. I hope you like it . A special thank you to my other son Anthony for editing the video.

Talking of nursery for fish, I remember when I was a teenager back in the 80s during the summer we used to swim in the Tawe river up between Alltwen and Godregraig and in the very shallow, wide slow moving part of the river where the river temperature was higher near a "swimming hole" known locally as the cinders by the old rec there would be what must have been hundreds of thousands of eels but there are none there now, apparently it is because of the barrier that has been put across the river down at the Swansea marina, my first taste of eel was caught and cooked on the river bank surrounded by the smell of wild garlic one day while my friends and I were mitching off school and I must admit I enjoyed it, and the eel lol

Great story Jas, I used to "mitch " from school in Pontardawe too! sometimes education is acquired by means other than school !
In spring and early summer we could see young eels "climbing" through the wet moss at Pwll Y Wrach falls in Gwaun Cae Gurwen. They are not as common now, I believe the issue is not due to tidal barriers etc as the design of these would have been taken into account to mitigate the adverse effect on migratory fish e.g. Salmon, sea trout, eels, lampreys etc. It appears the issue of the reduced number of eels is more to do with changes at sea which could be the current from the Sargasso sea where they spawn, this is subject to much research and the answer has not yet been discovered.Eel numbers are vastly reduced in all rivers that flow into the North East Atlantic. Kind regards Craig

@@coastalforagingwithcraigev8447 thanks Craig, yes i definitely learned a few things on the Mitch lol, when I was told that the barrier was stopping the eels migrating up the river I thought surely they would have thought about that first but I had nothing else to reference to.

I am so jealous of your life and knowledge sir. But please don't pander to vegan propaganda from the media that everyone is yearning to eat carrots kelp and wild plants. You jumping into a rock pool naked with a knife in your teeth and emerging with a big fat lobster and 2 dozen giant oysters is what we want. : )
