Thank you for making these videos. Because of them, not only have I been introduced to a lot of amazing music, but I also have become interested in learning Gaeilge! Go raibh míle maith agat!
My Gaelic speaking grandparents left the Highlands and arrived in Manhattan about 1920. They were in love but they were in service to the Laird of Butte , who forbid them to forbid to marry. So, Donald and Eileen left their employ and sailed for the new world. This song makes me think of the difficulties they must have endured when two naive Gaelic speaking newlyweds arrived in the harsh bustling city streets of New York.
Thanks for your touching, personal story. Irish, the appearance of the Pogues original version coincided with my first visit to my paternal relations in NY/NJ whose, predecessors had emigrated to the US in successive generations from the mid-19th Century to the 1920's. Thus my own attachment to this song. Being sung in Irish - to me, as a lifelong Gaelgeóir, is an added bonus. PS Having been exposed quite a bit to Ulster Irish, my Irish has the same origins as your grandparents; google "Kingdom of Dal Ríada" - a kingdom that encompassed east Ulster and Western Scotland. Mar sin Leibh! ('Bye - as your grandparents have said it ("sin" pronounced "shin" - as in Sinn Féin, but we won't to there.
From the description this sounds cool. I can’t listen to it right now sadly though maybe later I will. And 🙌🏾 I’m kind of here early for the first time.
I start singing the English version: night’s getting good. I start singing the Gaelic version (I don’t speak Gaelic): time to go to bed, and anybody who doesn’t let me is braver than I’ll ever be.
I agree with the description - the quality is poor. I prefer some of their other songs, because this one was not sung well enough. We know you can do better! Nevertheless, may God bless you!
Because if you translate something to irish its not literal or its very wrong and also the words have to fit the song id imagine its not too easy to do
Merry Christmas 🇮🇪🇳🇿🎄🍻

Don't mind me learning how to swear as Gaeilge-
Awesome!
I start singing the English version: night’s getting good.
I start singing the Gaelic version (I don’t speak Gaelic): time to go to bed, and anybody who doesn’t let me is braver than I’ll ever be.
Sláinté chara,go raibh mhaith agat, nollaig shona duit,

Original is legendary but gaelic is great too
Nollaig Shona duit

Plus there's no swear words in Gaeilge
I dunno, i think the curses were part of the charm.
Tá sé go hiontach
Shane MacGowan go raibh a anam ar dheis Dé
Go raibh maith
Honestly, I dislike Irish parodies, but that translation of the insults part was absolutely amazing
but this isn't a parody, simply a translation
Ar fheabhas! :D

These are not the proper lyrics they dont say most of these lyrics in the real one
Because if you translate something to irish its not literal or its very wrong and also the words have to fit the song id imagine its not too easy to do
@@alicecollins776 and with most Languages same sentences may tirn into one word from english to that language so it would not fit the song to well
As much as I want to learn Irish-Gael, you butchered it like the Shankill. FFS Leave a good old song alone...
