I never thought I would see young kids like this singing popular songs in Irish. Nor singing with such enthusiasm. What a beautiful thing this is. My mother would roll in her grave with happiness. Long live the best Irish language teacher ever: LIsa MItchell, who lived in Ceathru, Dun Chaoin, Dingle, County Kerry.
Almost 3 years since this has been released and it has taught more people and children As Gaeilge in 10 minutes than what a school has in 6 years, this song is a perfect example that future generations really don't hate the language, they just hate how the schools are teaching it, simple as.
Exactly!! I'm doing my Leaving Cert rn, and I had to drop to pass Irish last year I just couldn't handle the copious amount of notes. It was ridiculous, the amount of learning crap of by heart, without knowing what it even meant. I love Irish so so much, and it breaks my heart how many people hate it, due to how awfully it's taught to us.

I can not understand how it is possible that at present the Irish language is minority in its native land. You, as Irish, are lucky to have this treasure that you must keep alive. As I always say, the best way to maintain and defend a living language is speaking it as possible. Congratulations on this great version of this Avicii's song. Greetings of a Spaniard who loves your language and his own (Valencian / Catalan).
Monstervill History more or less answers your question, when the British took total control of Ireland in the late 1500s and early 1600s they introduced a set of laws called the penal laws that more or less outlawed anything Irish. The language was forbidden and owning land or gaining an education was ilegal for catholics. Despite this Irish was still widely spoken, then the Irish potato famine hit, the hardest hit areas were Irish speaking regions, the language literally died off and many other native speakers left for America. Those that remained in Ireland viewed Irish as a language of the poor after this and stopped teaching their kids the langauge. It was only in the early 1900s when irish nationalists started trying to start an Irish revival, as they believed to win true freedom from Britain was to reclaim our culture, that interest in the language grew again, once Ireland gained independence many schemes were introduced and funding given to the language, however unfortunately it might be too little too late.
Today, casually I have read about you have explained, for this reason I have remembered this page with versions of songs in Irish and I found my 3 years old comment and your answer haha. I guess that it could be useful trying that schools used the Irish like a main language since the first years, this could let you obtain new natural speakers. I believe that It may NOT be too late, for example, in Israel was revived a dead language (Hebrew) and now is spoken by 8 milions of people, you only should have hope. I appreciate your irish history lesson!! Go raibh míle maith agat!!

Keep the Irish alive! Just like I'm doing! I went to a Irish primary school and now I'm in Irish secondary! I'm so proud to be able to speak this language!

To quote genealogist John Grenham "...the Irish we were taught in school was not a language like French or German, a medium of communication. It was a form of advanced obedience training, a series of phenomenally complicated grammatical hoops to be jumped through." ...
Lukes TFitz I think the classes in secondary school should be divided whereby 2 classes a week are strictly Irish speaking classes .. no poetry nothing , almost as if you go to the gaeltacht for 2 classes a week and the other classes in the week should be for the stuff like poetry etc. however the primary school teaching of Irish should be taught just like a language such as French/Spanish are thought in secondary , primary school Irish teaching is a disgrace

There is a lot of talk about it, particularly in secondary schools. Students need to give their opinion on it, and suggest how it is taught, because they are the ones learning it. Personally, I think it is too serious.
In 4th class we learned this and sang it in front of the school and parents. For our Christmas plays we always add a Irish song into them. I'm in secondary and they do nothing.

To quote genealogist John Grenham "...the Irish we were taught in school was not a language like French or German, a medium of communication. It was a form of advanced obedience training, a series of phenomenally complicated grammatical hoops to be jumped through." ...
Lukes TFitz I think the classes in secondary school should be divided whereby 2 classes a week are strictly Irish speaking classes .. no poetry nothing , almost as if you go to the gaeltacht for 2 classes a week and the other classes in the week should be for the stuff like poetry etc. however the primary school teaching of Irish should be taught just like a language such as French/Spanish are thought in secondary , primary school Irish teaching is a disgrace
me encanta escuchar a Lurgan cantar.. gracias por el video!
Someone sent this to me, and I must say, it is absolutely beautiful. :)
This is my granddaughters favorite song. She did it in rang a dó.She has happy memories from it.She choreographed a dance to it with her friends.

Good music can be appreciated by other people than native speakers. Playing this in the kitchen of a Welsh-speaking family in Penarth, south Wales

Ill have you find t'easpainn dom not ar an bhothair easca cothrom
I'm part Irish, Love the sound of this song, don't understand the Gaelic but the only way I could appreciate this performance more would be if someone provided English subtitles for it.
I'm 64 years old, and I don't know the English version of this song, does it have a name so I could look it up and listen on TH-cam ?
Claude Chase
its called wake me up by avicii
"Thank You!"
the lyrics are different from the English sond as in cíbe treo Ata I ndán means listen to my song which isn't in wake me up

Roisinn Campbell doesn’t sound like much of a French name now
very nice song, even beter in gealic than in english, keep on going with that language!!
it is so wonderful not only to hear this amazing remake of Wake Me Up, but to see that the youth of ireland are still keeping the old language alive.
Avicii was an amazing artist, I'm sure he was so happy to see this was made
He loved it! He posted about it on Facebook when it first came out
This is what Irish should be taught in schools.
Well it is for like one day when we have to preform a song in Irish..... But meh good do with out Irish tbh
Lá amháin sa todhchaí. Déanfaimid cinnte
@@whatdisd haha
Oh trust me, they use it in my school lol
I wasn’t this in school lmao
I'm trying to translate the lyric to English.. Can't be done with Google or Rosetta stone. Keep the language alive and translate it so we can learn Irish. It's much more fun listening and learning the words in a song. Go raibh maith agat. I think that is right
+Bill B Hi Bill, ancroiait.wordpress.com/2013/0... this site has a wide selection of English translations
I am going to Ireland to learn the heritage, where would I go
+Bill B anywhere?
+Bill B If you're coming here to study heritage, I would recommend coming to a Gaeltacht city
Thank you Amethyst. I am researching them now. Maybe we will meet up in the future.. Go raibh maith agat. I've got so much to learn...
