- Reformist Masoud Pezeshkian has been elected as Iran’s new president, after beating his hardline conservative rival Saeed Jalili by nearly three million votes.
Speaking after the result was announced, he said he would extend his hand to all Iranians.
Dr Pezeshkian, a 71-year-old heart surgeon and member of the Iranian parliament, is critical of Iran’s notorious morality police and caused a stir after promising “unity and cohesion”, as well as an end to Iran's “isolation” from the world.
Millions of people boycotted the elections over the lack of choice in the candidates, dominated by Islamic hard liners, and the impossibility of real change as long as the supreme leader tightly controls policies.

Meanwhile, where in the world have we had elections with 100% participation? In Iran, the highest participation at the peak of hope for changes was 80%. It cannot be said that everyone who did not vote is against the government.
Pezeshkian himself is a true hardliner and a fundamentalist disguised as reformist .
As the western sanctions against Iran will not be lifted in his terms of office , unfortunately he will not be able to succeed and deliver the promises he has made .

Under the islamic republic system, every time a supposed reformer has become the president, your idea has been hoped for by the majority of the people but has had no results. Yes, more accurately, it means, “of the doctors”. He’s a doctor - I imagine his ancestors were doctors as well, hence choosing that surname ~100 years ago when surnames became required in Iran.
This is actually good news I really hope Biden also gets in as I think these two could maybe work together to sort out some of the problems that really don't need to be there between the two countries.

I think people voted for him because they could understand him better in the TV debates and people are hoping that things can improve economically if the sanctions can be removed but it all remains to be seen. He is also half Turkish and half Kurdish so he had a lot of support in those areas in Iran.

BBC gets this wrong (again). In theocratic fascist Iran all candidates are chosen by the the regime's Guardian Council whose job it is to protect this unpopular regime from its people. Pezeshkian gave the impression of being reformist simply to avoid an embarassingly low voter turn out, which is why he was Khomenei's preferred successor.

Whatever you can truthfully say about Iran but they show and proof that Iran accepts the outcome of an election. Would ever somebody imagine that Iran accepts voter outcome, Trump does not.? He is no reformist. He is another ' Project ' by Khamenei. Six months ago he couldn't even apply to be elcted as a memeber of the Islamic Parliament in Iran because the Guardian Council had disqualified him. The disqualification was rescinded by the order of the Supreme Leader Khamenei. The other candidate the conservative Mr Jalili wrote a letter of protest to the body supervising the ' elections ' last month as to why Pezeshkian was allowed to stand for the ' The Presidecy ' only to be told that it was by the order of the supreme leader. Pezeshkian had already tried for this post three years ago and he had been disqualified by the Guardian Council. To me it seems that a plan was devised by Khamenei & Co to allow him to stand so that people who were sick to death of the Islamists and the Hardliners had a glimmer of hope and bring them to the voting stations which had previously been boycotted by the Iranians. Secondly, the real power resides with Khamenei and these guys are just a bunch of puppets to take the fall for the Supreme Leader if and when the need arises. Pezeshkian had already said in an interview on the Iranian state TV that anyone who becomes the president must respect the policies laid out by the Supreme Leader and work within that frame work, so it seems that after a period of honeymoon, nothing will change. Opression of women, taking political prisoners, executions, forcing the Hijab on Iranian women, animosity with the US and Israel, exporting terrorism, sending arms and money to the proxies, corruption, ransacking of Iranian national heritage, etc etc will all be back on the agenda. I really don't understand why the BBC seems to be so excited about this guy's ' election '? It was the leading news very early in the morning .
