Newly qualified GP here. This is just my perspective, with current situation in the UK, I will struggle to earn 70-80k per annum before tax as a locum. If I find a salaried job, that will probably be 6 weekly sessions so 60k per year. With additional locum sessions, again ~80k if I'm lucky. Not to even mention regular overtime unpaid work. And we are talking about 2024/25, when everything is 30-50% more expensive than 5 years ago. Australia literally needs to be 2X more expensive to be financially comparable to the UK. Again, I've never lived there so just my perspective based on information that I have.
Thanks for your comment. You are right of course. The more I work here the more I realise that, actually, you are better well off financially in Australia. I'm really sorry to hear about how things are going in the UK, it honestly does not sound good at all :(
@@GPONTHEMOVE yes 30 +years of boom and no bust is all Australians know. Which city did u end up in. I’m considering return to Melbourne next year. Kept my APHRA which makes transition back easier!
Hi. Thanks for your video. Always quite precise and informative. What are your thoughts about full time locum in Uk ( being mindful that this may not last for long ) VS working in Australia. Also, do you know if we can have limited company to work in australia which I use as full time locum here in UK? Thanks in anticipation
Hey thanks so much for your comment. I was wondering if you could expand a bit more on the comparison aspect, what do you want to know? Secondly, not many people are talking here about limited companies. What are the benefits you are hoping to move over from the UK?
I don't know if you would be able to answer this question on here or maybe another video. Due to the other health professionals working in primary care and on call role in practices, GPs in the UK see more complicated presentations. Someone mentioned in Canada they don't have the same setup, so can see more patients in an hour due to dealing with simple presentations like UTIs, prescription refills, etc. Is that the case in Australia too?
I would say the setup is very similar in Australia as it is in Canada. As a GP, I see a lot of complex cases but I also see a lot of acute "simple" stuff and that does break up the day a little bit and keep that variety aspect of GP going.
Insightful ++ in a concise video duration. In NZ two years now and miss uk more than i thought, but i have to try aus now I think as may regret not doing so. Have you found gp practices to be sociable? To do events each year or heck, eat lunch together?
I was considering Aus, but also Canada seems attractive as I heard that in some places you don't need licence exams and it seems like a nice place to live without all those animals
@@ogwangjoshua695 :) I feel like I did 5 years ago before choosing Australia. Pretty happy here to be honest. Good luck though with whichever path you choose
Hello doctor!…I just shocked when you said GP don’t make more money in Australia because I was planning to move Australia as a GP….So, doctor what advice would you suggest me?…should i come to Australia as a GP as i am talking about money?
Hi! Thanks for your comment. There are many other reasons to come to Australia and I am very happy here, but loads more money as a GP isn't one of them :) As a specialist you can earn 3-4x! what you would make in the NHS through private work in Australia, but that doesn't apply to GPs sadly.
I've not done a comparison video yet :) I'm waiting until I have done a full tax year here in Oz to see if I'm better off in Australia than in the UK. Which locum market has long gone?
@@phoenixwright321 Ok perfect. Sadly I have heard the same from a buddy who runs a locum GP agency in the UK. He told me the reasons, but I prefer not to share them on a public forum like this channel because they may be inflammatory! :) I was a salaried GP in the UK so I'll try to make the comparison once I do my tax return this year.

Buying a house is biggest drawback- certainly in Melbourne and Sydney. All that extra money you make goes towards the 1-2 million dollar mortgage
And meeting mortgage brokers is also an interesting experience. How much can we borrow? - How much do you want? :)

Are you comparing locum UK GP salary compared to Australian GP salary? The locum market has long gone

@@GPONTHEMOVE oh ok. The UK GP locum market. So it would be better if you would compare salaried or partner UK GP salaries to the Australian one.

Would you please make a video on the 10 year moratorium period in australia for foreign trained medical grads?
