I’ve read this book a while ago and I find the content easy to understand but difficult to implement as it is quite different from what we are accustomed to. Hence I’m reading the book again now to refresh myself. This is a good video summary which I can watch over and over again in the future to reinforce myself with the ideas from the book. Thanks for making this video summary of this good parenting book.
Once in a while, I would have everyone put their “hand in” and then say the family last name on three! Or some other word related to what we are doing, Just like a sports team, giving us a feeling of connectedness. My kids thought is was fun! I coached many sports teams, and family is a team.
I do this anytime. It's very common in EU to see children at all variety of places. They are well behaved us usually. I am us native but became a parent in the EU. So I have seen how our culture in western world shames parents for bringing children in places sometimes. It's like the idea actual is already starting the social anxiety at a young age.
The author herself started her journey when she had a toddler. I recommend reading the book. She has some amazing examples for introducing these concepts with children of all ages.
How to make a year and a half old follow directions as in, the chores such as washing a spoon 🥄 when parents are washing dishes… My child just takes the spoon and plays with it instead of doing what we’re doing.
He’s learning how it works, so that he actually CAN be helpful. This whole situation is new to him… the spoon, the water, the act of cleaning, and of course the fun. I would consider this as ‘helpful’ for a one year old to be teaching himself how to use this tool and trying to understand for himself how it works! What an intelligent little human. All while observing his caretakers wash, which he will eventually partake in himself once he feels confident enough in how this tool works
Give simpler instructions. "Take this cup to dad", "open the cupboard so I can grab the detergent", "put that fork in the sink". Try a couple of instructions a day and as they start to participate more, increase it.
Well done! Great summary. I have been using the ideas in this book for years now and it definitely works!

Love it! We have a little jingle with all of our names in it that we sing.
The thought of taking my 2.5 year old to a coffee shop is hilarious.

What is the map for parents who've only stumbled upon this when their kid is 2.5 years old? What happens when there is a shift in how we parent?
