Really helpful - my Redwing sole (white) lasted only a very short time and I am in agreement that this sole looks (and presumably lasts) much better ! Look great with the selvedge jeans too - Thanks for posting
I had vibram sole put on a pair of r.w.202...came out looking great. vibram totally outlast any white sole. I've notice that the material used to make the white sole in red wing boots are softer and spongier than those made in the 1980s and 90s and early 2k decades. the newer wear out quickly
Great look! Good to hear Red Wing offers this as a resoling option for the 875 -- I like the white crepe look, but it does wear pretty fast, and there was never much grip to speak of. I'll look into it!
Use a good insole with the hard rubber Vibram outsole. If you walk a lot, a good insole significantly reduce shock to your foot from impact. If you sit or stand all day, but not walking a lot, then you don't need it. The thick leather insole was cushioned by the white crepe sole before, but you had change the outsole. A good half-sole insole won't change your shoe fit much.
I love the look of your boots. The deep rich looking tan with a few bruises is very appealing to me as well and I agree with other comments, it looks even better with a Vibram sole. I would prefer one with shallower depth of treads though so as not to collect much mud to be reckoned with before entering our office. Thanks for the videos and keep up the good work!
Great channel. Just wanted to point out that by swapping to the Vibram lug sole, you’ve converted your 875 to an 8175, which I believe is only available in Asian markets. It’s a very popular SKU too. I just ordered a pair of factory seconds for myself from Sierra Trading Post. Cheers! Love the channel.
I quite like that boot with the new vibram sole. Looks better than the wedge. When you go to resole them again you could probably save money by sending them to a good local cobbler in UK rather than shipping them all the way back to USA. The cobblers at Redwings aren’t employing any special or unique techniques (like soleofair/dr martens) to resole the boots. It’s a standard resole
They look great! They craftsmanship is excellent - good new welting and they are symmetrical. That symmetry really adds a lot to me. The black looks much better to me. Good call man!
I took your advice and just got my black Chrome Red Wings back with a new lug sole, they are so much better for the winter months! Plus I had got through three Christie soles in 10 years so hopefully the lugs will last a lot longer between re-soling. I took them into Red Wing in London and they instantly knew I'd had them done at Timpsons previously as they hadn't replaced the mid-sole, even though they are supposed to be an official repair agent for Red Wings! I think they have lost their licence now but beware if not.
Just to let you know that you can get this boot with super sole instead of wedge.lt's practically the same leather if not better.By the time you resole that wedge sole twice you could have bought a new boot.l do have one and they are super durable, still feels like new.
It looks like Red Wing doesn't put a shank in the 875 because it doesn't need one with the wedge sole. The Roughneck is really similar to your resoled 875 but has a steel shank.
Nice clean job on the welt, but there's no stitching visible under the sole. Did they stitch the welt to a midsole and glue the outer sole on? Checking as I need to get my beckmans re-soled and might choose a commando type sole.
Yes, looks like thats what they did, its nice to see the through stitching but I dont think it adds that much structurally. These are nice and clean and look to be robust.
Did this boot get a new midsole, it’s hard to tell. I just did the same resole on my 8890 and put a leather midsole on. Curious to know if there’s a difference? Love the lug sole over the wedge!
One last thing, if you don't wear insoles, you might consider it. This vibram lug is hard on the knees, as it is tough and durable, but not really good for providing cushioning on your feet and joints, in my opinion.
I have two pairs of the Roughneck, one is about 8 years old and ready for a resole and the others I've only worn one day, Glad i have them as i believe the Roughneck is no longer being made.
Going to bring my 875 in tomorrow for this and I will let you how it works out I have aluminum chips sticking in the bottom of the original white from cleaning a CNC also I am going to have them put hooks on the top two eyelets they said $100 2 to 4 weeks
The beauty of Red Wings is that they are virtually immortal with PROPER care. Resoling is like an oil change for a car. It must be done every however long it takes YOU to wear them down.
For anyone who likes the classic moc toe design, but would rather have the heavy duty Vibram sole, and you're looking for a NEW set of Red Wings . . . look up the "Roughneck" style 2942.
@@Nobody4rpresident OK . . . to be clear, the 2942 is the Copper Rough & Tough version that I ordered. The 8146 is the Briar Oil Slick version. Both numbers are Roughnecks. So, we were both right, but we were both HALF-wrong. LOL
Is that the same sole as the roughneck? Is it harder / less cushioned under foot than the usual white red wing sole? I mainly want the roughneck as its just so much easier to keep clean and nice than the 875.
I really like the new look of these. I have the same boot with the original white sole... when the time comes Ill follow your lead. Thanks for the video?
Without wanting to seem rude WTF you sent these to Red Wing to get a Vibram sole I am astounded. I took a pair of Cheaney's from 1998 I might add in 2009 to a cobbler in Bristol the Dannite soles had worn down the shoes barely look like they had been worn. The cobbler changed the sole for a SVIG made in Italy the Black Monte Bianco they may now have changed models. Anyway 40 quid all in. I then having moved to Australia did exactly the same thing 2 years ago same sole cost AU$75 so about 40 quid. The lug sole is equal to and if not better than many Vibrams soles (some perform better than others not saying your wont be a good one I have had many and some last for ever others seem t wear faster. Why oh why spend 110 quid getting them done when any decent cobbler will stock Vibram or SVIG soles in the UK. Timpsons comes to mind. They do look good I am just shocked you would go to that degree of difficulty and cost to get something done in the USA when it is readily available in the UK.
No excuse to ever ever change the soles on these. They will never ever be worn out. These boots should now have these soles on forever. No reason to change them ever again now. You better like them better than you did before.
Man, that looks badass now. Thats usually the look of the boot I wear although (from your review on them) I just picked up the golden fox wedge moc toe for comfort reasons, not really sure how I will feel about the look of white soles just yet. if they are super comfy then ill keep them regardless. But damn, you just took these from looking like a plain ol stock car and transformed them into a monster truck.
The Vibram Lug looks good. It does make the boots much heavier, and your legs will feel the difference. Also, The Vibram Lug is not really good in terms of slip resistance. You would think they have real good traction under water/wet substances, but in actuality this is not true. Lastly, with the deep tread, they pick up tons of dirt and objects, so be prepared to track in a lot of stuff into your house, car, everywhere. I've always like the black vibram lug, but I want the vibram lug light honeycomb color, just something different that stands out.
Awesome resole! Unfortunately the guys at my red wing store in Australia aren’t allowed to resole moc toes with heels or add a shank. So I’m stuff with my funky chunky white sole.
I wear this style for work but sometimes wear them while out in the woods. Love the comfortability. Do you or have you went in any type of places like that and how were they?
I like keeping my Red Wing boots in their original box ., I sent off my Iron Rangers to be resoled in their original box and the RedWing rep said they couldn’t guarantee I would get my box back., I don’t like that. What are they going to ship them in? I’ve not a good experience with Red Wing so far.
Red wing classic Mocs don’t have a shank but the roughneck moc toes do, you can send your boots to Brian the boot maker or northern republic and they’ll add a shank or a sole or new cork filling.
I really don’t like the white christy sole, I opted to get the Red Wong Roughneck 2942, the look almost identical to your resoled 875s. Also, your channel is awesome. Keep up the good work.

Great follow up review! Quick question, what is the difference in weight between the original wedge and the new Vibram Lug? I have an old pair of Irish Setters from the 90's that have the Vibram Lug but are ridiculously heavy. I'm thinking about having them resoled but am hoping the more recent Vibram Lug's are lighter than they were almost 30 years ago.
Man! You’re lucky! Red Wing messed up the welts on my new Iron Rangers which I had them resole. They trimmed them by half and they did a very sloppy job. I am so upset . I paid $100 to have my boot’s welts made very irregular. One is bigger than the other now. They had the nerve to tell me that those imperfections are normal. That’s BS . Will never take my boots to them for repair.?You run the risk of having a careless and sloppy repair person work on your boots which btw I believe they have lots of. Their quality control isn’t all that great either.
Have you been able to put some miles on? I'm impatient to find out. :) The thing keeping me away from this sole, and indeed from any sole with an exaggerated heel, is as you mentioned, the lack of support in the middle. Are you still noticing this? I try not to slam my heels into the ground and make an effort to land my feet on the ground at the midpoint, not the ball or heel. This can be done with the wedge, but when there is nothing in the middle between ball and heel, you have no choice. I'd love some Iron Rangers, but that's what puts me off of them, too. I'd totally buy Iron Rangers with the wedge sole, but I suppose they'd be crucified by the fashion-conscious. :)
Mate, just get a pair of Red Wings Style 8146. Its the same shoe (last #23 for the shape) that comes from the factory with the Vibram lug sole. If you're wondering what type of sole is on the shoe, its the Vibram Montana. It is rock solid. Will hold up longer than the shoe and won't wear at the edge even if you tend to dig in with your heels when you walk. It is a heavy sole, so it won't feel as light as the Wedge version of the boot.
I've been on the fence with getting the classic white sole moc toe, vs. the Roughneck. This helps swing me to lean toward the vibram that I instinctively wanted in the first place.
I think the reason they yield more and have a softer flex is that there is no shank in that Red Wing model. I'm thinking about putting on the same one or a Roccia sole like the Beckmans (unfortunately discontinued). Have you been happy? Any issues with the flex over time? I'm wondering if I will need add a shank to mine when I have it resoled.
I have been very happy with this resole and they are still going strong.. I now also have the Sawmill that come direct from RW with this sole. Both boots feel the same under foot and I have had no issues with fatigue whilst wearing the 875s therefore I believe they added a shank in the resole process.
875 with lug sole those are beautiful nice ben davis shirt too Gorilla Gear. USA Son. I don't have redwings yet. i even like the flags on the laces. I wear Chinese Carolina 6" wheat boots.
Im new to the channel, and Im sure you may or may not get asked this a lot; but where can I get some of those awesome American flag doodads that are on the bottom lace of your boots?
It wears well and has good flexibility, I think its a good sole from a practical sense, albeit, I do like Christy aesthetically and have just picked up some 1907's
I’m willing to bet that most of you commenting don’t use your boots for work or everyday. This is why you are stuck on the cosmetics of the boots. Vibrams bad idea! He must think he’s a genius for his idea... redwing been doing this over 60 years. Don’t you think they would make them that way if they were better? Or more comfortable? Come on bro don’t try to reinvent an AMERICAN classic. But then again you guys are probably just walking to the office in them anyway. He wasted his money LMAO and I will give him credit at least he was honest that they are not as comfortable.... comfortable boots don’t come off your feet very easy because you forget you have them on.
@@marting8841 actually, the 8146 are the same as the 8138, with the vibram soles (vs the christy). and none of the crepe sole boots have steel shanks, which makes a huge difference in the models that come with the vibrams. that's why they offer the option. long story short: if you want red wings with the vibram soles, get a model that comes with them from the get go. of course, if you're just wearing these boots to look "cool", then forget what i've written. i'm talking function, not form.
@@GK-vj9dz Thanks for the reply! What does the shank do to improve the shoe for a vibram sole? Also, could a shank be added later to a model that doesn't have it?
@@marting8841 the steel shanks give support between the heel and the forepattern. The crepe sole boots have no open area. Hence, the reason for the steel shanks. I don't think you could add one after the fact, without totally having to reconstruct the boot. That's why it's best to just get a boot with the lug soles from the factory.
Be interested in seeing how these have worn over time. Thinking of doing the same.
Really helpful - my Redwing sole (white) lasted only a very short time and I am in agreement that this sole looks (and presumably lasts) much better ! Look great with the selvedge jeans too - Thanks for posting

Right, but the heel still hits the ground first, followed by the toes, and the mid-foot is suspended above the ground by the shoe/shank/etc.
If the heel is the thing that sticks out the furthest on the bottom of the shoe, it is difficult to land on anything else, especially the ball!

875 with lug sole those are beautiful nice ben davis shirt too Gorilla Gear. USA Son. I don't have redwings yet. i even like the flags on the laces. I wear Chinese Carolina 6" wheat boots.
Im new to the channel, and Im sure you may or may not get asked this a lot; but where can I get some of those awesome American flag doodads that are on the bottom lace of your boots?
they are available at the Redwing store
I like them very much.
The wife would never let me in the house with those. Mud and dog poo.
PeERFECT
No shoes in the house!
Nice agricultural sole. You shouldn’t get stuck in the mud.
Where can I buy some thorogood moctoe boots in the Uk?
Try the internet. It has a pretty good selection of almost everything.
They have to give you new laces
The crepe sole is one of the key features of the Moc toe. Lose the sole and it loses its soul.
You'll wear em in mowing that grass😉
nice....
You need to wear a tapered pant, the boots would really look nice.
Your cuff needs to hug the boot ankle.
Oh no bad choice of sole mate.......😳😳
The 8146s are basically the 875s with that sole, so Red Wing does the exact same thing that he did.
