Many reviews of the Redwing Christie soles or the Thorogood variant is that they wear down fast. To this point, and worth mentioning here is that the original christie sole was specifically created to ease foot pain from walking and working on concrete job-sites all day. Specifically, they were designed for carpenters and masons who at the time, were hand nailing, framing, or pouring and screening concrete on their feet non- stop for 8-10hrs straight. The boots were always intended to be resoled many times over, with the leather uppers continuing to last for years. Ultimately, Like many things, boot sole choices should depend on how and where you plan on using your boots. The lug soles that you moved to were created for greater grip for working and hunting on natural, slipping surfaces and logging. The original, American- made Irish Setter boots (since bought my Red wing and now sold as the lower boot made over seas) included an "upland bird hunting boot" that is a moc toe with the lugged soles (basically, what you have transitioned these into). Always remember that all of these types of boots were designed as "work boots" even though they have also become the latest fashion statement. thanks for the solid comparison here on yoru review.

I’ve got both now. Prefer the 875’s for the style, colour when new and I also got the extra wide EE width 👍🏾 1907’s also a great boot 🥾 Excellent video ❤
I have the 877s. They didn't need any break in at all. Comfortable from day one and I can ware them all day long. They are a bit warm in summer, and I agree ( true to size ). Great boots, I'd like to get the roughneck from Red Wing to use on non snowing days that are warmer and plowed. My Chippewa Arctic 50s are for major cold and snow. Something in the out sole rubber that grips ice in a way my 877s don't.

I use boot cream on my boots to condition and keep the original color, it will not darken the leather. My normal size on Air Jordan’s is 8.5.
The 1907’s are in fact smaller in size and take much more time to break in. The leather is really tough, they keep their shape much longer, so don’t take them too small in width. The 1907 is the super moc toe, looks better on the foot (wider) but is in fact tighter in the same size as the other models from the moc toe family.
Yeah with the insert. Not without it. They fit so much better than other Mocs without the insert. And they're supposed to. As they are built bigger to support an insert

Your review made me feel way more certain about my decision to go with the 1907s when I first got them.… thank you. I originally went to my local RW store looking for the 875 but after finding that they didn’t have any in stock, decided on the 1907. I do still want to get the 875s at some point as I really love the Oro Legacy leather, but I don’t regret getting the 1907s at all. They are $309.99 here in America which makes them only $10 more than the 875 ($299.99USD). For that $10, you get the improved last, the Norwegian welt, the insoles that RW sells for $40 alone, and a secondary set of leather laces valued at $15. You can’t really go wrong with these. They were a great first pair of heritage boots for me with the insoles and roomier last. I do recommend for anyone breaking these in… remove the provided insoles for the first 2 months or so. As much as it sucks comfort wise, it’s a good idea to get the shoe sole (permanent leather and cork) to mold to the shape of your foot. You can always add the insoles back later on if you want the comfort, but they definitely do impede the shoe molding to your specific foot shape.

Ive been buying thorogood moc toes for about 10yrs now. I recently bought my first red wing moc (8146) and have found that red wing sizing is difficult for me. I measure at 12E so i tried a 12d on in the 8146 and the 1907. Both of them had my pinkie toes smashed in to and slightly on top of the toes next to them and my big toes were touching the end of the boots. They didnt have an EE width in stock so i went up to a 13D. I wasnt able to try the 1907 in the 13, but i think im going to have to buy a pair of the leather insoles for mine. The length is perfect as my big toe sits just behind the stitching of the moc toe on the end but now the boots feel a tad too wide. I really feel that RW needs to make a 12 1/2 for us big feet people. I love my 8146 but im not sure if their lasts are gonna work for my feet. I will give the 1907 a try before I make my final decision
1907 is one of the best boots I've owned and I own alot of Redwing heritage boots. They literally fit me PERFECT without the insert. I wear 12s in shoes. I wear 11s in any Redwing Moc Toe. Enjoy your videos very much. Thinking of taking the plunge and buying the 1907's. One question please for the 875 what colour are they ? I have also subscribed to your channel.
I have gone for the 875 nevertheless. Just more classic last and don’t need the Norwegian stitching anyway. As for the wearing out of the soles, I had my cobbler glue a very very thin layer of white micro grooved vibram. Admit I have no traction challenge usage but the soles never wore out and most importantly never wore unevenly which would have caused major back issues.
Hey, Great Video! Just a quick one: what’s your size in the 875 and the 1907. I bought both in us 9 and I think the 1907 are a little too big. They are quite roomy in the front and in the heel area.. best regards from Germany
The wedge soles wear out because they're soft and squishy, which is one of the things I like about them. Vibrams are ok I guess, if you don't mind picking pea sized gravel out of them 50 times a day.
I assumed the wedge would be better for me as I have plantar fasciitis but as soon as I read your comment I’m imagining the gravel issue would drive me up the wall 😄 I got gifted a pair of 875s and was planning to take them back to swap for roughnecks or 1907s but now I’m not sure 🤔
Well what’s your job? If you have a casual office job or something along those lines then they’re fine, if you are working a construction or trade job then I wouldn’t recommend them, I’m not saying they aren’t durable. There’s just better options for work.
@@charlesbronson240 Honestly, I love them for outside work man. I've found certain heritage hold up better than work boots. Work boots unfortunately are made like crap. Ironic isn't it. Other brands work boots seem to fall apart. The 1907 is a better work boot then the Redwing 10875 imo too, which so considered a work boot. So idk Once I wear these soles out I'm gonna go with a lug type vibrim maybe
Just picked up a pair of 1907's. The guy at the store said they are dress shoes and not to be used for work. Is this true? Also noticed they run a little big, should I go a half size smaller?
I'm a fan of the style of the 1907's. I just wish the white sole lasted longer and had a bit more grip. The sole on my shoes is always the first thing to go since i have some weird walking patterns. I'll likely go for those and just plan on resoling but maybe in the future i'll get the roughneck version as well.
Picked up the 1907's about a month ago. The break in process is no joke. I've never had pain like this before in a boot . Most of it is the heel slipping and rubbing.I will not give up on these beautiful boots. A lesser man would cave... or at least that's what I tell myself.
Love the 1907s. The original soles wear down a little fast I wear mine everyday for work and after work. When u go for a resole I go with a thicker little tougher sole. They sell a vibram Christie sole and the soles on the redwing 411 are more work wise bottoms. Take care of them and u will have em forever. And I like the leather insert as well. The leather laces are nice but I put the other laces in just feel like there better for work.
The 1907 is harder to break in. Thicker leather and they seem a tad smaller in length in the same size and they have an other last that looks better, wider, but in real life they are feeling a bit narrower in the same size as my 8131 Moc toes. I use special insoles by the way. The problem with new Moc Toes is also that the white sole is not very flexible and your heel wants to pop up all the time if you don’t tie the laces very tight. I always buy my Red Wings second hand as there are people who quit wearing them within a month or so. They buy them too large as they don’t like the break in period. My advice is, you have them for many years so be aware of the molding to your feet in the long run.
How long or how many wears would you say they take to break in? How long does that standard sole last? Can you put your own cushioned EVA footbeds into the 1907 then but not the 875?
Why would you want to buy a boot whose sole wears out so quickly? Thorogood is marketing a Max Wear sole that has good reviews for durability. Even though I really like the design of the Redwings I’m leaning toward the Thorogood boots.
Great in-depth comparison. I have just picked up a pair of the 2955 Blacksmiths partly based on your reviews of them. Did you ever work out the best product to care for them?Where's that flannel from please? Sorry for all the questions!
Thanks, I havent needed to treat the blacksmiths, they are holding up fine. I think I may try and wax using a product similar to that used for wax jackets (rub on and then melt in with a hairdryer). The shirt is actually from Joules, a UK high street brand, rather than a heritage work wear brand, a present from my wife.. nice comfy shirt with a decent fit.
@@DevonReviewer thanks for the reply. I will have a look at Joules, we have a store in Cambridge. I've never been in there. I like the look of the 1907 too. Similar fit to the Blacksmith?
Are your 875s and the 1907s are same size then? I found that with the insole that the 1907s have made them a tighter a fit, I wished I'd sized up a half. Instead I've just removed in the insole.
I work light duty in a machine shop, walking around on concrete and metal/ plastic grates, where safety toes are mandatory. I like mocc toe Red Wings for being not only stylish, but American and even union made. I also like a boot that’s resole-able, and will last me a good while otherwise. 6-8” seems ideal as I really appreciate ankle support and protection. What I need bedsides a safety toe is metatarsal protection, since I often carry heavy parts around. I got very wide EE or EEE feet, unsure what that is in EU standards, but they are paddles. Do you have any recommendations? I live in the US. I am willing to break them in if it gets me a union made safety boot with metatarsal protection. Thanks, just found your channel, you seem like a dude who I could have a beer with.
Those 875s are GORGEOUS! I love the way those vibram lugs look. I’ll definitely lean that direction when mine are due for a re-sole. And I LOVE the color! What have you been using to condition?!
@@richardruney7345 Actually I ended up getting a pair of 1907s, and my experience of the length of both boots is "fairly" similar. What I mean by that is, the 875s fit well for me lengthwise, but the 1907s were maybe 1 or 2 millimeters shorter for me - especially on my right boot - which looked as if it was visibly shorter than the left one - might be just my luck - which is why I would still try to get another pair in the same size. So I can't really give a definitive answer, but I would say if you have at least 1 CM in front of your toes in 875s (last 23), then 1907s (last 45) should fit just fine with the same size. But obviously, the best option would be to try them on before purchase. I personally can't, cause I live oversees.
Not sure if you have dune a review of the Red Wing Iron Ranger. This is anouther popular boot here in America. Very close to what my Grandfathers wore many many moons ago. Solid review. Well dune.
I have the 875’s and they’re an excellent winter boot. I’ll probably give the 1907’s a try next winter though as they seem a bit more comfortable based on your review. Where do you recommend getting them resoled?
For me it's the 875 have had them for over a decade.. I think you like the 1907 more because they are the newer not as wear down pair and have the original wedge sole. I do like the 1907's, but the wider silhouette is a major turn off for me.
I don't have thorogood's heritage moc, but I do have their heritage roofer boots in natural chromexcel. I would say they're on par in quality with redwings factory 2nds. Highly reccomend if you can find them on a good sale.
I think some of the thorogoods are ugly honestly. Look like that cheap baseball glove leather. Also, the tops are top tight. Jmo. I wear Redwing heritage for work. I respect people who like thorogoods tho
I would really like to see you do a review of the Iron Rangers and then do a comparison between the Big 3 (Moc Toes, Blacksmith and Iron Rangers). I need to know which one is the best to buy for constant wear and walking each day (no formal office job here). Cheers.
I like the 1907 a lot but I feel like it looks like a more straight up work boot. The 875 looks more like a work boot inspired classic boot. If we are talking comfort though, the 1907 does win all the way.
@@MarcP5267 Yup, I used to own a pair. They are essentially the same boot but with different leather and color eyelets. They are tough as nails. The heritage version is tough too, bomb proof to quote Devon but the leather is more fashion oriented, meant to patina fast.
Wao if one didn't know the 875 doesn't look anything like when It was made, The color is way darker because of treatment, the sole is different like you mention, they don't come with the American flag on the laces overall a very different look from the original but definitely, you showed how well its made thanks for the video
The 1907s look big on you. I can tell my the amount of leather that cresses. That explains, since you stated you like to buy your boots bigger for more room. I prefer to buy them true to size, almost tight with a little discomfort, not short at all. They will loosen up over time.
Something I really want to explore a bit more... the RW Blacksmiths are great but a bit plain except the spitfire leather which is interesting... I really want to try out the Hawthorne Iron Rangers, some cherry Beckmans, and some Wolverine 1000mile....then I will have an opinion on round toe boots!
I had a pair of Red Wing 8890's and the 1907's. I got rid of them. I prefer the fit of my 877's. I didn't like the way the 1907's fit me and I find the fit of my 877's much better than the 6" moc toes on the 23 last for some reason.
@MesYang88 well my 1907s seem to stretch a lot. So they were loose. The 877 moc toe area also seems a bit larger. Plus the 877s Don't have a heal counter like the 6" boots. Not sure what you'd call it.
@MesYang88 maybe it was just the pair I got. The copper rough and tough leather just seemed softer than the Oro legecy. I had zero Break in with the 1907s. The 877s took a few days to start to get comfortable.
Every redwing 875 video always look so orange/Red but I can never find them with that coloration. Mine are both either very yellow/brown or dark brown with no red/orange tint

I assumed the wedge would be better for me as I have plantar fasciitis but as soon as I read your comment I’m imagining the gravel issue would drive me up the wall 😄
I got gifted a pair of 875s and was planning to take them back to swap for roughnecks or 1907s but now I’m not sure 🤔
Nice boots are you the same size on the 1907 and 875 since they have a different last ? Thanks
Beautiful 😍 I have the 1907 and I don't use for work because they look so nice that I don't want to destroy them working😂
Well what’s your job? If you have a casual office job or something along those lines then they’re fine, if you are working a construction or trade job then I wouldn’t recommend them, I’m not saying they aren’t durable. There’s just better options for work.
Buy a work pair and a good pair
Why have boots in an office job hahaha, its like looking like a lumberjack and not knowing how to swing an axe
@@charlesbronson240 like which ? Honest question , I’m a maintenance worker researching for my next pair
So idk
Once I wear these soles out I'm gonna go with a lug type vibrim maybe
Just picked up a pair of 1907's. The guy at the store said they are dress shoes and not to be used for work. Is this true? Also noticed they run a little big, should I go a half size smaller?
Already got copper rangers and I don’t like their other Mocs so 875 it is
If you want to keep the Rough and Tough pull up effect you should use suede conditioner. It won't darken the leather
That's a hell of a tip I haven't come across before.
A lesser man would cave... or at least that's what I tell myself.
im a couple days in on a new pair aswell. i found the heel rub stops after a few days, double up on the socks if needed.
how is the heel slipping now?
@@EmreY25 went on for about another week, then the pain just disappeared one day. The boots are so damn comfortable now and getting better by the day
@@ryanb7665 oh ok, I experience heel slip as well, but it's not accompanied with pain, just some annoying slippage.
I didn't have that problem with the 877s. However my 8111s I have been a bear to break in. I got them to big. Heal slip.
Your 875s kept great color what have you done to condition and clean them and what have you used?
I’m considering getting the 1907. Should I
I love my 875's!!
I definitely gotta get me a pair of 1907's they look sexy af!
Great review bro.
5 years later I believe those boots still going strong
I own both. Both are excellent because Red Wing makes quality boots that will last a lifetime if you treat them carefully.
Do you own the same size in each boot?
Why would you want to buy a boot whose sole wears out so quickly? Thorogood is marketing a Max Wear sole that has good reviews for durability. Even though I really like the design of the Redwings I’m leaning toward the Thorogood boots.
Thank you for the video. I was debating these two. I was leaning towards the 1907, and now it’s a definite.
Also those look great with the resole.
Love my 1907s. Long break in time, but worth it!
Yes both the same size, I found the 1907 more roomy, a taller toe box and either a wider fit or easier to break in.
Red Wing 4492!! Made in the U.S. and have a metgaurd and safety toe!
Have you looked at the Redwing Super sole 2.0 ? I got some 2406 and they are working great.
Those 875s are GORGEOUS! I love the way those vibram lugs look. I’ll definitely lean that direction when mine are due for a re-sole.
And I LOVE the color! What have you been using to condition?!
You can't beat the waynthe Oro Legacy leather patinas.❤ I love my Black Harness leather Iron Rangers.
do you wear the same size in last 23 and last 45? I'm concerned about the length of the boots, are they the same lengthwise? Thanks
Does anyone know the answer to this?
Ara Mahrejian this helps. Thank you
Just got a brand new pair of 1907 born 0221 I bought g t them an hour ago I'm so excited
I need all the room in the toe box that I can get. So, I’m convinced that the 1907 is the one
Not sure if you have dune a review of the Red Wing Iron Ranger. This is anouther popular boot here in America. Very close to what my Grandfathers wore many many moons ago. Solid review. Well dune.
I just had them put the super sole 2.0 on my 875s I will try and put some pictures or video up
I prefer the 8138. The colour and leather looks better.
I've got the briar. I could go for another pair of mocs.
I have the 875’s and they’re an excellent winter boot. I’ll probably give the 1907’s a try next winter though as they seem a bit more comfortable based on your review. Where do you recommend getting them resoled?
I'd say Russell Moccasins backcountry is the best
I bought the 8103 and it uses the 23 last. But the fit is entirely different than the 875 and 877's of the exact size.
why this 1907 is different from the 1907 on the redwing website? Is this sold outside the us?
Did you put a shank in after getting that new sole?
I wear an 11US in 875 moc toe with no insole. Would you recommend going up because of the insole for 1907? How would a size 12 fit?
For me it's the 875 have had them for over a decade.. I think you like the 1907 more because they are the newer not as wear down pair and have the original wedge sole. I do like the 1907's, but the wider silhouette is a major turn off for me.
I own both. 875 are more iconic but 1907 are beautiful.
What about the fit of both boots, I have the 8131 oro russet, half size smaller than my other shoes. Does this also count for the 1907?
I personally prefer the Thorogoods, but haven't tried their higher end heritage line
Yes, those are some handsome boots, not cheap though!
I don't have thorogood's heritage moc, but I do have their heritage roofer boots in natural chromexcel. I would say they're on par in quality with redwings factory 2nds. Highly reccomend if you can find them on a good sale.
Yeah I'm a Thorogood guy too.
But either way's an honest push
I think some of the thorogoods are ugly honestly. Look like that cheap baseball glove leather. Also, the tops are top tight. Jmo. I wear Redwing heritage for work. I respect people who like thorogoods tho
I would really like to see you do a review of the Iron Rangers and then do a comparison between the Big 3 (Moc Toes, Blacksmith and Iron Rangers). I need to know which one is the best to buy for constant wear and walking each day (no formal office job here). Cheers.
Humanfactor Iron Ranger 8085s are the best. Had mine for a year and a half now and love them!
I have Iron Rangers and Moc 875's i find the 875's more comfy for longer periods. Due to the sole really. No difference in uppers comfort.
I like the 1907 a lot but I feel like it looks like a more straight up work boot. The 875 looks more like a work boot inspired classic boot. If we are talking comfort though, the 1907 does win all the way.
Miguel Vargas Red Wing makes a bonafied work boot similar to the 875 called the 10875 which is a real work boot.
@@MarcP5267 Yup, I used to own a pair. They are essentially the same boot but with different leather and color eyelets. They are tough as nails. The heritage version is tough too, bomb proof to quote Devon but the leather is more fashion oriented, meant to patina fast.
good review. Resole looks great.
They should come with the thicker Vibram Christy sole which is only $10 more.
Can you resole the 1907's with a Vibram lug sole? Are the 1907's a straight lasted boot or curve lasted?
I think the 1907s could happily take a lug resole!
Great review, thanks!
Your 1907's look much lighter than normal, did you do something to make them lighter?
I have the same looking, maybe he has beaten them so hard :D
What did you use to condition the 875s? I love that rich amber color it has morphed into.
Wao if one didn't know the 875 doesn't look anything like when It was made, The color is way darker because of treatment, the sole is different like you mention, they don't come with the American flag on the laces overall a very different look from the original but definitely, you showed how well its made thanks for the video
after watching your review, I also think that 1907 is a better buy for me.
The 1907s look big on you. I can tell my the amount of leather that cresses. That explains, since you stated you like to buy your boots bigger for more room. I prefer to buy them true to size, almost tight with a little discomfort, not short at all. They will loosen up over time.
I think you’re mistaken, Devon states in his videos that his boots ARE true to size. He says that he doesn’t down size he just buys HIS usual size 😎
Good review, thanks.
So Devon, if you get bored using that one of your boots, you can ship it to me in Indonesia..LOL
Guthrie reviewing boots
I agree but i just bought the 875 so i need to break them in to really tell ,the 1097 is hard to beat tho very good boot
Did redwing put a shank on the resole?
A worthy mention is the 405’s
Great video 👍🏻
In your opinion what is your favorite round/not moc toe redwing boot? I have the classic moc, and now I want a boot with a rounded toe.
@@DevonReviewer have you come to some conclusions on this topic yet?
Fantastic review.
Robert Williams the 877 is the one. Good game
I agree with you.
The 1907's are the better boot.
1907 has nubuck and 875 has a full grain upper. Do we have 1907 with same bullet prove leather upper as 875?
Yes, they both have about the same thickness in leather. I own the 1907s and they are pretty much indestructible and super comfy.
1907s don’t have nubuck btw. They are full grain pull up leather.
@@teacherpacothe rough and tough leather is buffed.

Are the 1907’s the ultimate moc toe boots?
Great video! Much appreciated
Every redwing 875 video always look so orange/Red but I can never find them with that coloration.
Mine are both either very yellow/brown or dark brown with no red/orange tint
I have the 875 and they turn more red/ orange after the conditioning/ oiling has set in for some time.
Nice jeans!
Does they come from a woman size ?? thanks
For me 1907’s all the way. Better leather and its a better overall boot.
Very interesting, thank you
The Norwegian welt is more secure, it is sewn to the insole, the vamp and the midsole
