- Experiment Name: Determination of moment of inertia of a flywheel about its axis of rotation.
Objectives:
The experiment is designed to provide the background of the following topics
To measure the angular velocity of a flywheel and conservation of energy for calculate its moment of inertia.
To learn the use of rotation to measure moment of inertia
Learning outcomes:
After completing this experiment students will be able to
Become familiar to use of rotation in measuring moment of inertia.
Applications of fly wheel in different mechanical systems.
Theory: Fig.1 (a) shows a mass M, attached by means of a string to the axle, radius r, of a fly-wheel the moment of inertia of which about its axis of rotation is I. The length of the string is such that it becomes detached from the axle when the mass strikes the floor. In falling a distance h, the potential energy of the mass has been converted into kinetic rotational and transnational energy.
If be the maximum angular velocity of the Wheel and F be the amount of work done against friction per revolution and n1 be the revolutions made while the mass falls the distance h
Then, the loss in P.E. of M= Gain in K.E. of M + Gain in K. E of fly-wheel + work done against friction
∴Mgh = 12 Mr22 +12I2+ n1F……………………… (1)
After the mass strikes the ground the wheel executes a further n2 revolutions and the angular velocity gradually decreases to zero.
The rotational kinetic energy 12 I2 have been used up in overcoming frictional forces, hence
Fn2 = 12 I2 …………………………… (2)
If n2 revolutions take a time t, then the average angular velocity
a =2πn2t
Since the angular velocity decreases uniformly from a maximum to a minimum of zero, the average angular velocity is also given by,
a=+02 = 2
Also the motion is uniform. Hence
2=2n22
i.e. =4n2t ……………………… (3)
From equation (1), (2) and (3), we get
I=2Mgh-Mr2w22(1+n1n2)……………………… (4)
Apparatus: Fly-wheel, weights, cord, stop-watch, setsquare, meter scale and calipers
