DIGITAKT | DIGITONE - Why I am selling!

  • In this video I describe my thinking of why I am selling the Elektron Digitakt and Digitone. Hopefully this helps in a way to think about your gear, and that it sometimes is good to swap instruments to get renewed inspiration. A music studio will always be an organic thing, and not like Pokemon: You can't have them all ;)

    There are a lot of musicians who are used to the MPC workflow. I always liked looping more than sequencing because it used to be mostly programming when I started music. The thing that drove me towards the digitakt is that the sequencer takes away the monotony of a bar based sequence. I also mangle samples so much that they sometimes are unrecognizable from the original recording. So for me if I am inspired and have a good sound already I go to my Daw. If I’m feeling uninspired or something is missing with the sound I go to the digitakt. I realized this after I sold the digitakt and then I rebought it.

      Yeah, it is all about getting the workflow that suits you personally. For me, I almost never use a DAW, apart from sometimes record a live take. And have been sequencing with an mpc for ages... linear... love it :)

    mega fm looks great i hope they do a facelift version of that. Digitakt is my sketch pad, super fast takes no space and trigs on midi. Great upload.

      What do you mean with a facelift version of the MegaFM? Higher resolution for sweetspots would be nice... And yes, glad you find this a great upload; always doubting if anyone is waiting for my opinion on gear... but we all learn from these kinds of things right, even though we dont have to agree! It is all inspiration!

    Get an Oxi sequence monster and you'll soon forget about elektons sequences. ESPECIALLY after Oxi's recent firmware update. Oxi used with my custom synths in Maschine simply gives me the ability to quickly write complete pieces (that sound like no other instrument), which I then spend some time polishing. A highly powerful and easy and fast work flow... once you learn how to quickly do auto sampling in machine.
    Oxi is the future for more and more people, as it gives us the most powerful sequencer to use with any instrument.

    I also got rid of the Digitone and replaced it with a MegaFm MKII. The MegaFM is gorgeous and gritty.

    This was helpful, I just bought the digitone and I’m slowly getting used to the workflow but hearing your plan to get rid of the digitakt for the mpc has me feeling better about trying to use with my akai force and not gassing over the digitakt digitone combo. I’ll get more milage from the force anyway-it’s just gigantic in comparison lol

    • @SupahDupah
      @SupahDupah  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The digitakt is fast and intuitive... but I just need stereo and more power... and I happily sacrifice a little bit of the fastness for it...

    learned a bunch from you. An inspiring digi user. Thx!

    Four months in, how do you like the Syntakt for its sound design capabilities? I'm also an MPC user and I love its versatile workflow, but I too missed the sequencer of the Elektron boxes. But to me, the Syntakt is like the worst combination of the Digitakt and Digitone: no per-track polyphony, very shallow FM synthesis, shallow melodic sound design overall, tinny hi hat machine, no arp, no chorus, no resampling, etc etc. Yes, on paper it had 12 tracks and is both analog and digital, but in practice, if just sounds thin. I think I'll go back to accepting that I'm way more productive on the MPC and look for inspirational synth sounds elsewhere, like my Hydrasynth.

    • @SupahDupah
      @SupahDupah  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well, I kind of love the syntakt, but not as a standalone unit. I am starting a band with a guitarist at the moment and the combination of guitar and the beats and the baselines of the analog part is pretty dope I must say (with the occasional other sound)... this will be the base, but next step for my part is to integrate the MPC One as well, to have best of all worlds... Hope this makes sense!

    • @sinewaymusic
      @sinewaymusic ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SupahDupah Six months later and I love the Syntakt. It's funny how your opinions change over time. I never use the MPC anymore, instead, I record the Syntakt multitracked into the DAW and then do the final mixing and sampling touches there instead.

    Not sure if its since I updated firmware but recently my MPC One has gotten real slow. I used to be able to flick through VST Synth samples with ease, now I have to wait for each one to load (like 2 -3seconds) before I can use it or move to the next one.

    I have all three of these units. MPC needs setup time and a learning curve to wrap your head around all the parts. Two different ways of making music, which is not a bad thing. The UI/UX of the MPC ONE still needs a lot of work. Just because it can do a lot of things, doesn't make it ok for the workflow to be half baked, which it is. Just take a look at the MPC ONE step sequencer. That thing is completely and totally unusable. Someone once told me, "Hey! The MPC ONE is not for step sequencing!" Well then, why include it on the device? It's broken and calls into question the decision process behind aspects of this device. Some parts are more in favor of others according to the designers. It is one of the worst step sequencers out there.

    • @SupahDupah
      @SupahDupah  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      True, true... I have never used the step-sequencer on the MPC... on any of my previous MPC's... luckily no piece of kit is perfect :)

      @eyeballhopscotch2268 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SupahDupah Right, but if it actually worked and they put some thought into it, it could get it's recognition and people would use it. You could be like, "woah they updated the sequencer, check this out everybody!" and as far as no piece of gear not being perfect, true, but as a UI/UX person, everything can be made better!

      At least they added a sequencer, and maybe going to update it in the future. I think that’s a better approach then Elektrons „well fuck it, why should we add stuff like stereo sampling or a at least somewhat understandable amount of disk space, people gonna buy it anyways“ and what’s twisted about it it’s just because they have other boxes who can do it, but they can’t do other stuff. I’d really wish Elektron would bring out a modern box with modern features all in one and not this like „okay you buy this but then you don’t have that, oh yeah you can do that but not in this way, there’s a work around“ I really can’t believe how many work around you need with the Elektron boxes that are just normal features directly implemented in like every other device..
