You could tell Ayton looks up to Jokic, Jokic might be his idol. It's like that with many bigs around the league. They all admire and respect Jokic as a person and basketball player. I kinda feel the opposite. There has always been this sort of "his game is so good but it's a next level, subtle, kind of good that you have to really understand the game to appreciate" when people talked about him. I'm glad fans who've never really watched him play, but heard all the debate about his MVPs, are seeing that whatever else he might be as player, he's also an unstoppable baller who can drop 50 in a playoff game dropping shots from all over the place. His game is sublime, but now they know he's a straight up dog too.

    It's hard to commit on Jokic because of how fast he passes the ball. He's just too good at reading defenses and knows where the open man is. Denver is also a well oiled machine at this point. They've got so many good cutters and shooters Phoenix didn't know what to do. Suns basically wanted him to score and prayed no one else would go off. You gotta either play him starlight up and get his and try to make it difficult for him or take his passing away. He got both in this series, his slicing them up with his scoring and passing that can't be a great game plan for this dude his a back to back mvp. The sun's been a bad defense team all year, so it makes sense they wouldn't make any adjustments.

      @ktbeatty ปีที่แล้ว +5

      That's the thing KG understands about defense on players at the level of Jokic. It's not about stopping them, you can't. It's the thing that the players who defended (not stopped, not shut down) players like Kobe, Jordan, LeBron, etc. the best understand. It's about letting them know you're gonna be there all day and make them work for every moment they're on the floor. His most important point was about meeting him at the free throw line and running up the court with him. Make them work continually for everything. If your effort begins when players at that level get the ball, you've already lost. You do that relentlessly, game after game, and the last 5 minutes of a vital 4th quarter of a game 6 or 7, maybe they can't quite get to that special level because the tank is nearly empty. You didn't stop them in that moment, you stopped them 6 games back making them work their ass off on a simple inbound pass half way through the first quarter. It's not easy to bring that intensity and never let up when they are dropping shots on you left and right, but it's why the KGs and Rodmans of the game were special.

A “dig” however is where the guard is basically halfway between the perimeter player and post player. Defender is feinting at the post player but not fully committing unless the post turns his back. It’s to discourage all the post dribbling and staying in position to double or go for a steal if the opportunity presents itself, but you can also still close out on the perimeter defender.

Ayton has happened to guard MVPS when he comes up short, Giannis or Joker. Ayton has been my favorite player since we drafted him, he went to high-school in the same city as me, he went to UofA and worked out for NO ONE but the Suns. It's a situation that's snow balled and seems to be at a fork in the road. Montys gone, hopefully someone can come in and REALLY teach DA how to change his attitude a bit, and use that size and strength. I hope we keep him because he's GOING to figure it out, and I'll forever be thankful for the night he brought back the WCF trophy 🏆, and let EVERY FAN that wanted to, come touch the trophy as he was standing out the moonroof w TC.... All time Suns big man, hope he can help get us 2 Finals 🤞🏻🧡💜☀️🏀🏜

    Ayton is the perfect example that it’s not all about the talent but personality’s matter in sports. everyone is good at the pro level but how bad you want it deep down in your soul is key guys Kobe Jordon Tom Brady Muhammad Ali would be willing to die in order to win at all cost. Guys like Ayton Marvin bagley JR rider Ryan leaf all talented but got rich and stop trying and winning is a option not the only thing that matters
