Floor said that she sanged this song several times in the beginning without knowing what it really means. Once she found this is about (like others said, a funeral procession for the human species), she had a hard time singing it without getting choked up. It is a very sad song about how our existence has caused irreversible damage to other species and the planet. We too would eventually become extinct like others.
This is one of the few Nightwish songs that it would not immediately attract the listeners in the beginning. However, it will grow on you. Always love your analysis. I'm not a musician but I feel like I learned something every time.
I was one of those who wasn't sure do I even like the song when I heard it first time, but now this is my favourite song in album.
I specially like the beautiful melody, which keeps repeating but changes in very end where the song drops its bomb: humankind will become extinct and the song is written by some other life form which we created.
It sounds pretty, but that's about all it is for me. Tuomas' haughty and pretentious lyrics shine in this song, along with "Tribal" and that does irritate me a bit.
Yeah I wasn't a fan of this song at first but after servers listens I love it.
Agreed. I thought it was okay at first but Floor's vocals at the start really stuck with me that I had to give it another listen. It's now one of my favourites on the album.
I did not know this, but now I know why this song is always making me cry.
This song hit us with a plot twist (stopped building up intensity and dropping to silence) only to then hit us with another plot twist by keeping it's original promise (the full band coming in)...
...beautiful song! :)
A wonderful surprise. Absolutely loved it.
This song is a musical poem for the humanity ✨🌏🎧
This is actually my favorite song on the entire album now, it wasn't at the start. This is to me a funeral poem to our planet, and it makes me cry on a regular basis. I doubt it will be played live though
Same here. IIRC it’s the first kind of “political” for the lack of better word song of nightwish? As in trying to raise awareness. All the songs before didn’t have that
@@danzansandeev6033 If you think none of the songs before Procession in the entire catalogue had political or awareness-raising messages, you need to re-examine the lyrics, my friend. It's all there; buried deep in symbolism, steeped in metaphor, but definitely there. Much more broad than your traditionally political song; certainly nothing like Dio's "The Man Who Would be King", but there are broad political arguments in other Nightwish songs.
The Greatest Show on Earth echoes similar sentiments to Procession at parts; "Enter history, the grand finale, enter rat-kind" implies that we humans will destroy ourselves, leaving the rats, scavengers, to pick at what we've left behind. The section near the end, when all the band repeats "We Were Here", it is the cry of a dying species, one which is already aware of its fate, begging to be remembered, if there is even anyone to do the remembering.
Trevor21230 ofc I didn’t say that other songs didn’t have the message cmon. But this is first song to raise direct awareness to the problem with the imagery and stuff
@@danzansandeev6033 To an certain extend, Weak fantasy (and Tribal) are political as well in it's anti-religion-patriarchy sense
It never fails to make me cry too~
Nightwish have collaborated with The World Land Trust to support the work they do & promite it💙🌏🌍 a
Dude. You are so insightful. You're the only reactor where I'm actually looking forward to the pauses and in particular your final analysis.
Thank you, friend ⏸️🙋🏼♂️
What Tuomas himself said regarding this song:
“Its very lyric heavy. To really understand what’s going on, to get the hook of the song - you need to delve into the lyrics.”
“Probably the best, at least most touching performance by floor I’ve ever heard. She really captured the essence of the song. And tells the story as it should be told”
And if if I remember correctly I believe he said something about this song being basically the first song he/they finished on the album.
I thought what he said was he'd been having a kind of writer's block for a year, then this song came to him and opened the flood gates for the others. So it was the first he wrote for this album.
@@kestrelcraig2593 Its how I interpret his words being: "First song to get it's final form", which in my mind means finished. Perhaps 'final form' doesnt mean finished, in this case. What do I know :)
@jorluo Same here. First it was "hmm", now from this album this song hits me hardest.
The Greatest show on Earth was a song of the earth, humans being born and this song is about our possible coming death and the death of the creatures around us because of the damage we're doing to the Earth. It'll be interesting if they play these songs back to back in their concerts.
Y’know, this song makes me think that *tuomas* is the alien, planted in order to learn our storytelling techniques in order to warn us about our own hubris. He’s finally putting the plan in order now that he has influence and all the talented musicians he needed.
Fun little detail in the video @ 13:45. The plackard on the right says "Het ontstaan der soorten". I can't read the minds of those that created the video, but it refers to Charles Darwin's most famous book "The Origin of Species", translated into Dutch. I interpret it as a nod to the Dutch Valkyrie Goddess of Metal herself, Floor.
Man, this song... makes me cry like a baby. Every. Damn. Time.
I'm not sure I could survive hearing it live. Seriously.
The song is called Procession, like a funeral procession, a funeral someone is holding for the earth, or for the humans. The song is repetitive and melancholically written because it is a funeral song, a dirge. "We wrote this in a tongue that you will understand, words and melodies with a touch of colouring"... The song is from the perspective of someone else, outside earth and humanity.
Our working theory that Floor is not human is coming together!
I always wanna cry when ik hear this song, even before i knew the meaning of it.
I like this explanation my thought on the song along with the video is the songs perspective is sort of coming from plant/fungal life slowly spreading over everything in humanities absence along with possibly most oxygen breathing life forms. The one line "We held our breath, as along came suffering" makes me think either most plants may have disappeared due to mankind or sort of evolved to stop taking in CO2 and produce O2 so mankind and other O2 breathers slowly suffocated till only the plants/fungi were left again to slowly take over after our demise.
It's written from the point of view of whoever or whatever (Ratkind?😉)comes after humans are long extinct.
I’m not sure there’s any other band that makes more impactful and deep music.
Every song is an emotional journey. Floors voice carries it right to your soul.
Yes, that right here is what I feel about Nightwish, nicely said...
For me, this song is also quite the counterpart to the optimistic "we were here" from The Greatest Show on Earth. "We were there and will remember mankind - our kin - aeons ago"
I understand what you are saying about being on the fence about the song. When I first heard most of this album, I liked it but didn't really love it !!! BUT, I spent some time being VERY still and absorbing the songs ... ALL of them together. Back in the 70's, we would buy an album, put on headphones and lie in the floor just listening.... blacklights or strobes going, or in the dark ! THAT is how I appreciate and absolutely ❤️ LOVE this album now ! I blocked out the world and "experienced" it ! Old school style !! GREAT Reaction, by the way. I always enjoy your input, knowledge and opinion !!
cool
Hallo friend, Tuomas say in an interview, in his opinion, this is Floors most emotional Voice for a Nightwish Song.
It's a brilliant idea that you touched upon there. It's through-composed (a term one often finds associated with orchestral "tone poems") to evoke the Procession, rather than a cycle, which a traditional verse-chorus scheme would conjure.
This 👌
I'm completely blown away by the fact that the song structure itself is a form of "procession" as well.
What's a procession? A parade, a line something that goes straight, consisting forward movement. Here the verses, which make the largest part of the song, are like a parade, marching onward. No left- or right-turning choruses. Just a line.
The different melody of the song's ending could be interpreted as the end of the parade. Possibly making may for a new chapter of life on earth, perhaps about our human/not-human descendants taking over the food chain crown.
You have multiple aspects here that tell the story of a procession,: the lyrics (about our planet's timeline), the singing + other instrumentation, but also the song structure itself as I mentioned.
This is a whole other dimension of songwriting. I feel SO humbled being allowed to live right in this moment so that I can contemplate these brilliant intricacies of storytelling. The best part about all of this? A fellow earth child, much like you and I, created this music.
Everyone, next time you re-visit other songs from the new album remember that Tuomas did incredible work on weaving the songs' meaning into his musical arrangements. For example "Pan" is about human creativity. Look at its song structure ("we're the writers of...."), at times the melody goes crazy. Well, it's embodying the creative theme. "Noise" has an extremely busy vibe. The melody, instrumentation, the tempo, the lyrics, everything is so hasty, and noisy if you will. Our good Chase already mentioned the heartbeat-like drums in "How's the Heart?".
There truly is beauty in the fineprint.
This “theme” that runs theoughout the album is how humans and nature relate. Human:||: Nature.
The more songs you listen too, they have common threads to each other and to last songs and albums.
Amazing. This work will be appreciated more as time goes by.
has a very cool scifi blade runner vibes starting with floor's pillow soft voice like raindrops the synthesizer sound that toumas is doing quite beautiful sounds like each sound is pulsating with energy then it pick up a little tribal drum sound at 5 and a half min
The song isn't just about a message, it's also built around a theme. The procession is in message a funeral procession for mankind, but thematically it's built as a procession as well. Like a line of people the song just keeps going in the same way, but building on what was before, and it is also mirrored by the evolution of life. Life keeps going and evolving in the same way, so it's consistent but still building on what came before.
I have come to realize this is the most important song on the album.
Forgot to leave a comment earlier.
You're a gem. Yes, YOU. Nuff said.
Nova, that's a lovely thing to say. Thank you!!!
“Saturdays don’t come quick enough”, well put! This is such a beautiful song, goosebumps all over. It is only bested by Endlessness.
two planets meet.
the first one: " you are not looking too well.
the second one: " I know. I´ve got humans."
........
the first one: "Don´t worry. That doesn´last long."
That would be soooo hilarious joke... if it wasn't true :(
Sorry, but I don´t buy this "humans are cancer on the planet" thing. I think we are also doing many good things, but they don´t make headlines in media, because fear is more powerful psychologically than hope, and helps boost sales.
WOW that's so true and tragic 💔, and infuriating !!! Humans are supposedly intelligent ???
@@zvolencan1 We have undoubtedly contributed to the climate crisis. Yes, we have done great things, but we have also done terrible things. Neither should be ignored. We have the capability of achieving great things, but we don't always think of the unintended consequences of our actions until we have done the damage.
@@gayleeidson6724 We are the dominant species, but whether we are the most intelligent is up for debate.
I find it really interesting using the vocal line as an ostinato, yet still carrying the message of the song, with the constant appearance of "as along came..." echoing the repetitive nature of the vocal melody. That constant repetition of the same section of melody can be very effective in driving a song along. Usually, it's underneath other changes, but here we have an ostinato _above_ the rest of the music. It's very clever: not only do the lyrics describe a procession (of life), but the structure of the song is a musical procession, with the vocal ostinato tying together the gradual evolution of the instrumentation until we get to the final reveal, where everything changes.
It's genius level, I tell you.
This is my favorite from the album ❤️ It moved me deeper than the other songs from the first listen and it has even grown more on me. Cant keep my eyes dry with it, crying every time.
For me, without reading Tuomas thought on the lyrics, is the Earth telling her story after we destroyed it, she is longing for new, better life. Don't know, but one of Tuomas best songwriting ever.
This song is gonna be a very popular life performance, calling it now
To me this song - that I already love so much just listening first time to it - is a natural follower of 'greatest show on earth. It must be a reaction by Thuomas to the truly effective work with Richard Dawkins. The wiseness in all the lyrics and especially the pictures shown in the video remind me a lot on that. Do I need to say that Floor is - like each time I hear her voice - giving me the feeling of pur love and emotion. She is the best I ever explored.
This band is incredible and I absolutely can’t wait for new music from them.
Can this band be anymore stellar?? Thanks for the reaction!!!
This song needed to exist in Human :||: Nature. After the message that was conveyed in Noise, it makes sense to have a piece that needs to be listened to with intentionality and attention.
The song is very touching and thought-provoking about what our greed has caused to nature, cry for help, right from the beginning and, If you have listened to the previous songs of the album in order and carefully, then you will notice that there have been references in them that point to this particular song, meaning that there is an even deeper meaning and dimension in the whole album as a whole. MASTERPIECE!
I love Nightwish - but this song, this album hits me way too damn hard. It's like every negative thought had about humanity, refined into a beautiful touching piece of art that rips my heart into fragments with each lyric. Loving your reactions to this album, but damn does it hurt.
Harvest is quite comforting, in an unexpected way. It's like Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life. 😉
@@ChrisPage68 Harvest does have an element of comfort, but also a sense of unrelenting futility. Truly beautiful pieces of music though. Thanks so much for replying:)
I think this song does not reflect negative thoughts about humanity. if you notice, suffering begins when animal life arises, before man ("sapiens") appears. It is a metaphor of evolution seen as a procession: most of the species that have existed on earth have become extinct and have been replaced by others, and the same will happen with them and with us (another thing is that we accelerate the process with our decisions). There was an "empty zoo" before we appeared and there will be again cyclically.
Sorry for joining so late, but I discovered this channel recently and started listening to the album a month ago...
first time i hear this song,i dont liked. then every time i hear again i like more and more and now it´s top songs this album. thanx to great react again chase and have great day there. grande finale endlessness is there waiting :)
This song didn't blow me over first time hearing...but burrowed its way under the skin and now resides close to my heart as a real favorite. Both beautiful and haunting. Can't wait for the live shows.
This has become one of my favorites of the new album , altough it tookl me more then one listening to get there , the message is so urgent and direct , everytime I see the animals appearing I cry a litle and feel very sad 😪 !
Tuomas has said that hè asked al lot from Floor in this song but when hè heard the endresult he simply smiled , hè said it was the finest singing of Floor he ever heard , I'l agree ❤️ !
One of the most emotional songs for me, cause I'm a Nature and music lover 😍💖🎩🌼 greetings from Czech Republic 🇨🇿🙋
Same here 💚🌱🌲🦍🐕🐅🦒🐘🐀🦇🐼🐨🦅🐥🦨🦦🐊🐍🐢🐟🐋🐞🕷🦠🌏
Awesome reaction. Saturdays are awesome :) I would suggest for next week, if you are up to it, doing a dual reaction with Tribal and Weak Fantasy from Every Form Most Beautiful. The only reason I say that is you haven't heard it yet, and Tribal is kind of a continuation of the theme and lyrics in Weak Fantasy. Tribal is also rather short compared to the rest of the album. Just a thought. Thank you again!
That would match perfect and would be so nice
This is a great idea. Chase, if you would do this please use the live version of Tampere (with lyrics)
That’s a super interesting idea! :)
I’ve always seen Tribal as sort of a “sister song” to Weak Fantasy - lyrically they are very similar, but when it comes to the musical side, you can really see how much Tuomas has evolved as a songwriter between EFMB and Human. :||: Nature.
It would be super cool to have Chase compare the two :)
Oh, and I second what Silvia said! Definitely do the Tampere version, where there’s lyrics already added - they are important to have, if you were to compare the two songs.
Even if you don’t do a double feature and just do Weak Fantasy on it’s own at some point (please please do) - I’d highly recommend doing that version as well :)
Weak Fantasy first, yes please!!! 😍🙏
This song always gets me teared up. And after reading the comments here I get why. As English isn't my first language, sometimes meaning gets lost on me when I just listen to a song. However this song always gets me. Now I know the meaning behind the song I really can't listen to this without crying.
The part "Another birth, another monster" always gets to me.
Lovely reaction again, thank you. This is the first song Tuomas wrote for this album, and it kind of set the theme for the whole album. The story is vital in this one, such a heart breaking message.
This sounds like a background for an info story, most of the time. Like a narration in the loud speakers in a zoological museum. But for a while, when the drums and guitar kick in fora drive, it's like you walk intp one of the rooms in that museum, and a band starts to play their song inspired by the background music of the naation.
It was a wonderful reaction as usual, thank you so much!
'Procession' might not seem like such an amazing song for a live performance at first thought but:
Imagine it being played live and the entire audience staying SILENT throughout it. That would make it such a POWERFUL experience live. All of us at the concerts not making a sound throughout Procession, mourning what our own species has done to all the others and to our planet. All of us, holding a song length's worth moment of silence for its message.
In my opinion, that would be an irl reaction the song really deserves.
I'm sure on one of Floors Instagram videos, a few months back, she said this wasn't one they planned on doing live, but given the fans response to it they may have to rethink that.
@@confuzedpenguin9974 Sounds exactly like what she was saying about Shoemaker back then (because she wasn't confident of being able to properly sing 'those parts' already, and originally didn't want to try live because she's way too much a perfectionist when it comes to her vocals), are you sure you didn't mix these two up? Or maybe it was the same for both songs... I don't really remember, but I know what you mean is what she was saying about Shoemaker (maybe 'as well').
I mean, I'm not complaining, would be totally fine with me either way, haha
The first time I heard this song (no lyrics) while listening through the entire album, it didn’t really do a lot for me, except being “pretty”...
However, after reading the lyrics and watching a reactor analyze the lyrics, the combination of the meaning of the song and the music just made me do a 180 on the song - and it actually made me cry :’(
I also think that the very unusual structure of the song makes so much more sense, when you’ve taken proper notice of the lyrics.
The song is repetitive and just goes on and on without some big chorus, just like evolution, which we as humans are a part of - we are not special in that regard, but just part of the endless procession of species that will emerge and then disappear...
Which reactor was this? Cause I really want to see that video.
So, Nightwish did what I feel no psalm or religion could ever do. They wrote like .. almost religious music to celebrate life, the universe, the existence. It's a celebration, but also a lamentation of the cruelty of parts of our society. That those cruel parts took over humanity.
As a conservation biologist, I would say that that cruelty holds us all hostage, wether we agree to the current doctrin or not. I never really saw anyone put words, pictures or sound to what I feel about nature, both scientifically, culturaly, and easthetically ... and also ecologically, since I and everyone else has this intimate relationship with nature: we cannot exist without it. The exception would be The Last March of the Ents, a scene of The Two Towers that I guess would make Tolkien himself tear up.
I hear sorrow, I hear awe, but also hope in this music, and I commend you for helping me dive deeper into that. I am breathless over how someone could create this piece, and learning more about it makes the experience deeper and more emotional to me.
Also, seeing those endangered species .. I never saw this video before. It makes me cry. And even more so when I think about the thousands of .. non-cute species that also face extinction, many of them because of humans wanting just ... profit.
Many of the songs on the new album need several listening and time to fully digest and accept. I felt the same way after the first listening of Procession and entire album actually, I was on the fence, I just didn't know what to think about it because it was something totally unexpected and different. But now after the album sank in I just love it the way it is, I enjoy every song, and Procession too. I just wish they would play entire album live, I cannot imagine leaving any of the songs out of the playlist.
Great reaction from you again 👍.
As others have mentioned, it was the first song Tuomas wrote after his little blocking on writing Nightwish songs. And at first it struck me as a kind of "rounding up of the album" or a kind of background summary, - because Tuomas said it was the first he wrote, and after this one, the others just came floating. And he said other things as well - the album is positive, gives hope and a believe in the future / nature / humanity - and we are just a blink in the evolution of the Universe.
I believe he is right, I think it is beautiful this song - and keeping in mind that this is an album for singers - Floor is completely incredible (hypnotic as Tuomas says) in this story. It's pure emotion and she manages to change them during the song, so you feel the hope or proudness of having been a part of the Earth once - a small, but important part.
This is songwriting, singing, composing at its absolute top level. The other 2 singers, low in the background is making this completely magical - but for sure - this is an album for singers - only the very very greatest singers.
Wow
🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘❤️
The damn onion ninjas hit me again. The lyrics hit me every time. Thank you for your reaction. I think the lyrics are deeper than the music. THANX again. Peace.
The struggle is real, my friend! 😭
I see the building of the sound layers as increasing with the amount of life on earth.... Vocal/keys and the soft breathiness when there is nothing... Drums kick in when the first plant life arrives... drums change when the heartbeat comes, then more of the orchestra... and it keeps building the more layers of life are introduce
Great reaction for a great song
The message is crystal clear
That's why i love this band so much
Great lyrics
Great music
And Floor as well....our Goddess
Hi Chase...from France
Stay safe
I've been looking foward to your reaction to this song all week 😁. When I first heard this song, I was slightly underwhelmed by it and felt it was a filler for the album... I was wrong. Now, it's one of my favourites and I sing this to my little boy who loves it. It's so beautiful, soothing, quietly powerful, emotive, just brilliant, a testament to the genius of Tuomas' writing and composition. Never underestimate Tuomas and Nightwish. X
Here Tuomas' genius is at full display. He wants the lyrics to be important and dominant in this song so he destroys everything that a listener is acquainted to hear developing in a song. This song is one long-stretched single verse from beginning to the end telling Tuomas' story but.... there is no chorus. And we expect to hear that chorus! Genius, true genius!
2:07 This is why I love your reactions, Chase. Noticing and pointing out the small details I'd only barely be able to understand by myself - as well as your genuinely positive/confounded reaction when it happens.
Keep pausing and doing the replays!
I will! I appreciate you! ⏸️⏸️⏸️
This song grabbed me by the throat the first time I heard it, I immediately understood the meaning. It was intense. The rest of the album took time for me to grow into.
That's a fine reaction Chase!
This is said many times already but you might actually come to love it more and more. The one song that has to grow on you the most, but when it did it becomes a favorite. Such a beautiful composition both musicly and lyrical
I keep being amazed by the quality of the content you keep putting out. Your attention to details is incredible (I would have never caught the small growl behind the "birth", not in a million years). I already told you you'll be getting to 100.000 in no time, but you're getting there even faster than I thought, and it's well deserved! Thank you.
Great reaction, Chase! That change in the harmony from D minor /G minor to the F major/ C major chords on "singers of the gone" is absolutely stunning!
Loved your reaction, as usual. At 13:24, the sign the in the drawing says The Origin of Species in Dutch. Nice touch.
Hoi Jessica! Hopelijk heb je een verdomd goede dag.
I think this is one of Floor's finest vocals....Can't wait to see this concert live, when the band comes to New York....
This was my first time listening to this song,it was incredibly emotional.
If we do wipe ourselves out i hope this is in a time capsule so those who come after us know some of us were aware and cared.
And did nothing
🌌💙🌏🌎🌍
Hello my favorite from this album. Though next week might be different song. These are all amazing songs
Tuomas way of conveying emotions and thoughts goes beyond words, even if his own are not only beautiful but eloquent. Damn, what a composer.
Thanks for reacting to this one, Chase! Keep the great work up!
One of my favourite songs from the album.
This is my favorite on the whole album. The first few times I heard this I cried.
Like others have said, this is the song that probably will grow the most on you... had the same feeling as you, but then it has on and off become one of my favourite songs of this album
Tuomas said that for him, this was the best interpretation of a song by Floor that he has ever seen, it delivered exactly what he wanted and a little more.
Yep, i see his Statement..🤗
Yes, and I wonder if that is the reason of a little "joke" (by lack of a better word I cannot think of now) in the video: at approx 3:50 of the original video (around 13:53 in this reaction) we see a book called "Het ontstaan der soorten". That is the Dutch(!) translation of Charles Darwin's famous work The Origin Of Species. Could did be as an acknowledgement of this superb interpretation by Floor, who is Dutch as we all know?
Love that you have the integrity to give your honest opinion even if it's not totally overwhelmingly positive.
Tuomas songwriting is just one of a kind, and as you said it's architecture
how the song structure varies. But here, if you haven't noticed the piano in the end of the song is same as the end piano in The Poet And The Pendulum just in a little lower key...just amazing.
At the beggining of this year I read a book which became one of my favourites; Wonderful life: the Burgess Shale and the nature of History, by Stephen Jay Gould. Thanks to this book I could understand the lyrics of this song when I listened to, specially these parts: "We remember father Pikaia / gave the way as along came Sapien" and "such worlds were there, zoos dead again / After all, we should've never appeared". I don't know if Tuomas read the same book, but I guess so.
Heart breaking is accurate words.
But one of my favourite songs.
Love it.
I had to listen this several times to really start liking it and understand the message.
I understand that Tuomas wanted to show the same melody, but evolving, to represent evolution as a procession.
Tuomas is just a GENIUS, Floor is just a vocal godess - and you bring it to the point. Thank you!
13:53 I only just noticed it says “Het ontstaan der soorten” in the video, which is Dutch for The origin of species” which is a book by Darwin
That was a little gift to Floor.
I was looking for this comment! Hoi Lilo! Ik hoop dat je een verdomd goede dag hebt gehad! En gaat hebben als je dit leest ^^
This song too me a moment to get into. Like you said, the structure of the song is so different. But when you see the video and dig deep in the video you see what this song is. Just like other comments have said, it’s a funeral dirge. Like everything Nightwish does...it’s beautiful...but this song added an element of heartbreak. Yes there is hope that we can put out the dumpster fire, but we as humans have to acknowledge our stake in the game.
I’m sure so many have said it, but like...we are truly lucky as humans that the forces of the universe brought these insanely talented people together to be Nightwish.
Great video! Have a damn good day!
I wonder if they can even perform this live as it is so emotional. It might be the new Poet in live shows
We're lucky life even got started here. The ingredients vital for life apparently didn't originate on Earth. We're a happy accident - but we're turning it into a tragically avoidable one.
No not exactly radio friendly but gorgeous in its own special way. More of a deep cut for this album which never repeats itself in the sense that no two songs sound the same.
The structure of "Procession" is very deliberately crafted to maintain the mood of that slightly wistful parting with someone dear - which in this case is us... and the life on Earth itself. There is light, as there were beautiful memories, but after all can only be talked about in the past tense, as if through the eyes of a watcher somewhere out in space. Some kind of surviving intellect. I love how the song unfolds with every new thematic / evolutionary stage, getting into the beat at the mention of Sapien... However the power is never unleashed, as the listener starts to get the picture - this is not about some procession, this IS the procession. Thus the repeating motive, thus the ponderous pace. And a different kind of emotional impact. This is masterful storytelling, probably not intended for live performance but necessary within the "concept" of the album.
I believe, those fans that did not "get" the song, always waiting for the metal to kick in, are the kind that do not pay much attention to lyrics and just wanna have good time with their music. And for that purpose, there is never a shortage of offer! But there is just one song like this, even in NIGHTWISH discography. Maybe for some it will open up in several years, if revisited, at a moment when their guard is down. :) I see that potential here.
Just like we look back on the existence of the dinosaurs, just as we're watching current species slowly fade away, the philosophy of impermanence tells us that we too will one day fade into the cosmos and other beings will reflect on our existence. And that's okay. Death is a natural part of life we have to come to terms with, even if we want to do as much good as we can while living. This is the feeling I get from the song and I love it. Life is sad and beautiful at the same time. The song's heaviness in meaning, and it's lack of a catchy singable chorus, means I can only listen to it every so often when in the mood. So I understand where Chase is coming from with his feeling on the song. But I appreciate the song quite a bit.
Sidenote: I'm really hoping we can figure out this space travel thing so we can populate other planets and discover new life. That would extend humanities existence quite a bit, though I think a species living forever is likely not possible barring cybernetic human enhancements, which I wouldn't be super enthused about.
Compared to the dinosaurs, humans are unsuccessful in terms of their longevity of survival.
Personally, this song has grown on me after several listens. It now causes me to tear up each time I listen to it. May with more listens you feel emotionally connected. Continue to enjoy the ride!
I don't know what it is exactly, but this song makes me break down and sob like a baby every time. It's simple, repetitive, but carries such a heavy message that I don't think I could handle much more musically. Like you I can't really imagine it as a live song, but I don't think that's its purpose.
The heartbreak is in every layer of the music. The emotion in Floor's voice, the lyrics, the instruments, the buildup
"We will remember all the suffering"
"We wrote this in a tongue you will understand"
How's my heart when I first heard this?
😭 😭 😭
Tribal is coming! Can’t wait for tomorrow! Chase Day!
This is one of my favorites from this album, it's beautiful.
Thank you for the excellent breakdown of that song. I was worried for a moment you would not comment on the subject matter but you did hit it there at the end. As you reach the end of the album I would ask you that when you do the final song please take an additional five minutes to look at the album as a whole and comment on that as a singular work.
Thanks Chase for another great reaction. This song is very sad. Not every loves it but when you truly understand what the song is about, it will bring chills and tears to your eyes. Can’t wait till next Saturday. Until then, have a damn good week 😊
I love this song. I've seen many people feel the same way as I do but there are also those who don't like it. Everyone has their own taste in music and that's a beautiful thing. Some of you are still on the fence and would like to listen to it again.
Well, if you decide to listen to it again you need to surrender to the song. Let it lead you. You might just need to listen the song a couple more times to get there though. I promise you it's worth it. The official lyric video is very well done and it helps you to get a bigger picture.
Variation is the spice of life and the tastes are different. Then again, some people doesn't like if a song reminds them even a tiny bit of a "ballad". There's been a negative attitude towards these slower songs that are often called ballads for a long time. Some people always say that a band is trying to be more commercial and get some radio stations to play them by writing "softer songs" and "ballads". After a while a "ballad" is automatically seen as something negative. I've seen it from many people and not just from those who are very much into metal. Well, some people just want every song to rock as hard as possible. That's their thing.
There are also some people who really doesn't want to get emotional... Maybe it's time to surrender to it. You are welcome to discover that side of yourself. You are welcome to join the human race. Music is there for you. It's not just a question of attitude and what style you want yourself to be associated with. Music is much more than that... Life is much more than that.
Anyway, I just wanted to write this. Take care, everyone. Have a wonderful day.
The song structure is a liturgical lamentation for those of us who like labels boxes and categories 🤘hence all the repetition
What is that ?
@@thisismyvanced3738 Essentially a funeral dirge.
If you've seen LOTR, think the extended scene where Eowyn is singing at Theodred's funeral.
If you haven't seen LOTR, then think of the sound you make at 2am when sneaking to the fridge but when you get there you find the milk is all gone
Wow bro....you've picked a deep one here...🤗💟🖤 Many have shed a tear...🎧🎤🎵🎶 Really looking forward to your break down.. analysis and reaction 🤟🤟🤟. Think we are in for fun, tears and an emotional rollercoaster 🖤
Fantastic reaction. Im stillamazed how you catch allt hsoe different musical elements. In special the drums!
I do my best. And I appreciate you.
I’ll listen to the song even when I really don’t like it that much because I know after this one comes my favorite!!! 😎🤘 For me this album is too short. I began listening to the second part to see if it “feels” longer... but no... its still ends too quickly for me. 🤷♀️😂
A really good and thoughtful reaction and a wonderful help to unterstand the way, the composer developed the music as well as the content of the lyrics. Thanks a lot.
Thank you so much for supporting.
I came to hear you talk about music and Floor's singing and I stayed for you love of owls!
🦉🦉🦉
This is such a heartbreaking song. It took many listens for me to really get what the song was about.
Super looking forward to next week's reaction!
Great reaction, Chase! The message is definitely in the lyrics with this one. Now, I may be wrong, but I'm 99.9% sure that the 'strings' sound you're talking about just before the 7-minute mark is actually Troy's guitar with the E-Bow. You hear it come back in again at around the 14 and a half-minute mark before doing that wonderful harmony with Floor's vocals at 15:07. :) Beautiful (and definitely understated) addition to the song.
Thanks for your reaction. This song makes me a bit sad but then again it makes you humble that you are able in this day and age enjoy music that actually moves you and stirs feelings. You still have a lot of great songs ahead. If you want to revisit Wacken you cant really go wrong with any pick. I think you would like Weak Fantasy from Tampere as well. Have a good day.
Reminder to myself, no visits when Chase goes live for Nightwish
My favourite song of this album. It sounds hopeful but what it is is a warning.
A great reaction again. I told you this one was different ;) I agree that it almost doesn't feel like a song... to me it feels like a message rather than a song. To me personally it doesn't so much feel like a funeral poem but a call to remember that we're not alone in the world and that we should stay in our place in nature instead of trying to dominate it all, resulting in destruction.... but, that's just how I feel about the song :) next week TRIBAL!!!!!! can't wait!
Well that means this week coming is Tribal! You are gonna LOVE the video (and the song of course) 🎸💀🕺
My favourite of the album 😊
