The adventure continues.
Safe sailing.
Boat:
White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built.
The camera gear:
Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V700 with a Rode External mic with a sponge and dead kitten attached.
Action, underwater scenes and small blogging is done with two Osmo action cams. Some boat shots are done with a Dji gimbal camera.
Editing:
Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff!
There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access.
Content:
I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining.
Comments and being at sea:
I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World.

Barry it’s been a while more than usual 2 weeks I hope your ok mate….looking forward to another great video
It's been awhile since I've seen a video in my U-tube feed. Glad to see your well😊and⛵⛵⛵along still
It certainly exemplifies the term...bobbing in the water... Thanks Barry for your always efusive manner. Cheers Mate
Man Alive! The action on that guitar! I imagine the atmosphere plays hell with a wooden instrument.
Thank you, my old friend. I needed that today I've watched you for years.
The birds at the end was so funny! 😂😊
Hey, first to post! Alright, Alright, alright! Always enjoy your adventures!
18:30 It is so funny how you try to reason with those birds instead of shooing them off , you are a kind soul Barry. Just like you were with Martin the Moth , May he rest in peace.
You are living your best life mate , cheers to that !
Barry,Barry,Barry,Barry,we will always cheer you on mate.keep safe
lol love watching you, reminds me of my day boating/ sailing alone, you always win the argument 🤙😎
Hey, old boy!
Nice to see you made your power system running again!
Have a good time!
Conversations with a gull!!!
Water and salt and potassium at east that’s what I do when I am working in heat. We love you Barry take care!
Barry needs his own program on tv, like a Rick Steves type show. I love the sailing but once Barry’s sailing days are over it can be his next project. I’m sure the masses would fall in love with Barry’s personality/humor and storytelling. Someone needs to make that happen.
Barry dancing with the sea and all maintenance... On and on...
Compliments on troubleshooting and repairing the solar panel situation.
Cliffhangers of an old sea dog more like it! Love the ending Barry stay safe stay calm and stay cool.
That calm water part was absolutely beautiful. An old sailor floating his boat in the sky.
I got to sail through the Coral sea with Family, in the early 70's, Cairns to Lae, PNG and on.. It was not so calm.. Mountainous was a closer apt description.. I doubt I'll ever forget the mountains there.. Stay safe.. stay happy.
"Fair sailing Barry"!
My Dad was on New Caledonia during WWII , He was there during and after Battle of the Coral Sea .
It was nice of those birds to crap on the boat then laugh at you, nature eh! Amazing 😂
Bary, It is called a "Blocking Diode". Another GREAT video!
Your vids are a treasure in my life, Barry. Glad you're OK and telling the tale.
Wow incredible those shots of the boat on the water doesn't, even look real more like green screen.
That ending !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Fantastic
me and my mother met you in Palatka. Fair winds my friend and God bless your journey
Love that becalmed footage, very Life of Pi.
Barry you are my single handed sailing teacher and personal hero !
Great episode and eager to see what happens next!? We can't get enough of your Globe-Trotting sailing journey!
That last bit, channeling your inner Johnny Morris 👏brilliant stuff, i got quite nostalgic 😆
Sunday 7 oct 5.30 iam sailing thanks😉looking at your video
Wow , how quick time goes by, I remember when you were reported missing, doesn't seem that long ago, love your videos, God bless
Loving the bird conversation.
Headed for Bundy I see. That puts you back on my old sailing route.
Good memories! - Have a Bundy Rum for me!
Nice one Baz my urine is crystal clear and loads of it I’m drinking plenty of beer and eating salad like a rabbit, and a tortoise. Stay safe matey!
Virtigo...lie with a pillow under shoulders, head back, slowly roll head from side to side a few times. Crystals in ear got stuck. Need to release. Good luck.
One of your best videos
Berry every time I see you sailing I keep thinking if only you would let out your main more, you would be sailing much better. Easy sail trim tip to remember: when in dout, let it out! ie. with wind from the side the boom is almost all the way out by the shrouds.
There was a old western movie SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL SHERIFF starring James garner Bruce Dean a really good comedy. James garners character was always on his way to Australia
Thanks Barry. Brilliant
good morning my friend Barry fantastic videos 73 from kb2uew
The water catcher from the Caribbean has been very helpful to White Shadow
OK, we’re ready for your next biannual post!
Loved the Monty Python type ending. Made me laugh out loud. Great video, Barry. 🙂
Lovely flat unbelievable that the sea of time can do that
That was a lovely bit of video and also your watery eyes is called dry eyes and you need eye drops. I and a lot viewers enjoy all.
Always a pleasure to watch your vlogs. What I enjoy is hearing you solo sailors talking to birds, seagulls and today it was the boobie birds.
Baz you legend! May I recommend you getting a suitcase generator. I went sailing for 3 years and bought a little Honda for grand and I wouldn’t go again without one. Been watching your channel since 5k sub. Peace. Phil gosport, UK
Calm Seas and Fair Winds Barry, another interesting episode.....
Hi Barry , Hope you are OK, nothing posted for a few weeks now. Your video's are entertaining and educational . Keep them coming!
A wood holster or sleave works well for securing the anchor bar or tube you can make it very snug and its easy adjust the tightness by adding wood shims. It wears out but its wood and so its easy n cheap to repair or replace..
Love your funny bird friends :)
I ❤ everything on the boat has a personality. Barry, I have binge watched all your videos in the last few weeks. And have been becalmed for the last five days with no video. I have absolutely fallen in love with you and your journey. I wish you lots of safety. I think you’re hilarious. You remind me a lot of Robin Williams, our beloved, comedian in the US.
Alway good to see another episode of TOSD
Tyvm Barry texcellent as usual
At 16:00 the winch set up was interesting. Liked the engine comment too. Thanks for this vlog - you are my goto vlog.

I’ve sailed across the Coral sea . It’s just fantastic obviously at the right time
Lots of good details!
I spent a lot of time in a stell destroyer in those waters, gets so hot at times, had to sleep on the deck of an evening.
Hope you have a good lay over in Bundy. Cheers mate.
Been watching you for Years! Sail on, Old Sea Dog! Fair winds. 👍🏼
Love the trick with the boogie board!
Enjoying your sailing ⛵️ video! Mike from Missouri
Oh Barry, This video tells me you survived. Please Stay Safe & Fair Winds!! ☘
Splicing Paracord (for your wind vane), is quite straight forward Barry. Good vids here on YT. Weavers of Eternity or Bored Paracord ✌🏼
Stay safe Barry!!!
6:56, The reality of life on the water in time sensitive situation the details!! I must without reservation say that my dreams of blue water sailing are diminishing as a mostly land based person. But there is always of coarse a but yes? If it were just me and the sea I would welcome the sea . Thank you for your explorative and indefinably exciting life. Thank you for sharing your adventures with us landlubbers with blue water hearts. EZL
No one could ever say you aren't living life to the fullest! Even though you've already gone through the scariest day of your life, I'm anxiously awaiting! So glad to know you lived to tell about it! Am I shouting? Apologies. I get my point across with those exclamation points for certain! Take good care Barry!
Where is the old sea dog? Not heard from you for a while and hope all is well 👍
Heck yeah! Old sea dog bringing good vibes as always.
Always look foward to this!
I Pray For Your Health Barry And May God Bless You Always, Wendy
When you're sweating a lot in the heat, remember to replenish your salts and electrolytes too, not only the water. Also, consider dumping buckets of seawater over you so your body doesn't have to sweat that much, but I'm sure you were already doing that. I said it last video, and I'll say it again: I am glad these videos are not in real time and that I know you somehow made it safely to land.
There is plenty of sea salt. Full of good stuff
@@barbarianlife Sea salt has a lot of things in it that make it less than ideal for drinking.
Lots of electrolyte in beer, lol😂
Barry, Vicks Salve or camphor salve, same thing are great for healing, put that on your sores and infections 4 cuts. I've used it a lot over the decades and it has served me well. Anchors Aweigh and thanks much Ole friend❤
💯 under this kind of heat stress and physical work water will never replenish all you need no mater how much you drink cause it doesn’t contain all the elements you have lost
You sound like tom hanks list on the island with his ball which became his companion and he talked to it as if it was human...great film.
Thank you!
Please check those white plastic wiring connectors, they burn very easily. Try holding them to a flame, be carefull, when they catch on fire they will drip flaming golbs on whatever is under them. David
Well done
This 3.43 min, is what I am searching for calm seas! I know it could, can, and will get old. Yes I get that, but in this crazy world well need I say more? EZL
Once again a very nice video to watch
Love the channel! Was still trying to work out the thing about options running out from the last vlog. See now as per the next one.
Maybe see a doc when u get to Australia, unless you feel 100 percent better soon. Yes another cliffhanger love it ❤ Stay safe Barry ❤
The Coral Sea and Australia's Heaven on Earth
Another great video! You know what else is great besides water is dried seaweed that you can get all over Asia, look up the nutrients, its a real good energy booster! And what is really really great in the morning for breakfast is couscous which is easy to prepare, its more nutritious than rice! I fry some garlic and ginger in a pan in olive oil then add half a chopped red pepper and another half orange pepper, some chopped red cabbage, a bit of chopped green or regular onions and one chopped carrot (very finely chopped), finish off with 1/4 can of green peas. After its fried you then add a teaspoon of curry powder and a half teaspoon of garam masala powder and half a tea spoon of red chilli pepper and mix the couscous in (you boil half a cup of water with salt then put in half a cup of couscous once you bring the water to a boil!) These three curry powders are essential as you know to anyone crossing an ocean, always so great to have on board! Served with a fresh glass of orange juice on ice and coffee and you have a super breakfast that will fill you for the day! Hummus on bread is also great when you add chopped fresh chilli to it, fresh olives and green onion to it. I also discovered canned sardines with mustard sauce when I was in France the last time and absolutely fell in love with that if you can locate that on shore somewhere next time! Keep in mind as well that if you eat a bowl of salad before going to bed, yuo'll wake up refreshed as the lettuce cleans the blood in the arteries while you sleep! You should also try to turn off all electromagnetics whenever you can as they are VERY harmful to your body.. If you think about how they scan the ocean all the time, they go through your body and a lot of sailors fall sick because of it and don't know why, they develop chronic fatigue or tumors, vertigo is also part of that, as you are always fighting that radiation, it gets tiring!.. Look up this video "Dr Sharon Goldberg 5g Michigan state hearing" as well as Dr Paul Heroux at the same hearing, very good information about this! Also they do sell portable air conditioners that cool a room very quickly, you should look that up! By the way just put a plastic blanket there at the front so the birds don't crap on your boat, the poor little ones were tired and really needed the rest! Glad you made it through that nasty weather in the next video! All the best!
At 3:28, the art begins....beautiful.
ahhh Barry you naughty boy lol, I thought this was the episode for the cliff hanger, Alfred Hitchcock me thinks 😅
Have you ever gotton the magenta sky with cumulous and a glassy sea all over? They all reflect off each other, but the color is unforgettable. It was typically late afternoon, I think.
great edit Baz. Can't wait for the next)
Great episode and dramatic ending. I can't wait to see how it turns out.
Barry, you remain an inspiration.
I had the opportunity to sail 800 nm from Bermuda to the Virgin Islands, this really takes me back. Life doesn’t get any better.
That was a fun passage.
Enjoy your video! Mike from Missouri
Thanks Barry.
I Will Always Love Your Adventures On The White Shadow, Missed You And Hope More Videos From You Soon Barry, Thank You, Wendy
Thanks Barry loved it.
Dark urine is possibly from not enough salt.
It's counterintuitive but I'm not talking about drinking salt water. You do need enough salt so the body can absorb the fresh water you are drinking or you will dehydrate.
That's why sweat is salty! And you need to replace BOTH!
Half a teaspoon a day of salt or a shotglass of seawater!
