  • U.S. Army Engineers demonstrate their capabilities utilizing the Improved Ribbon Bridge (IRB).
    The Improved Ribbon Bridge (IRB) enables Soldiers to cross rivers, lakes, or other bodies of water in the absence of a means of crossing or in the event of an unreliable or damaged permanent bridge. The IRB can be configured as either a continuous full-closure bridge or assembled and used for rafting operations.

    I have to agree with chicken wing, it's not a bridge but a ferry. I was an army engineer trained at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. What we used to build were constructions which connected two sides of a gap. That is what a bridge is designed to do. We made them of wood, rope, pontoons, and girders. One side gave access to one side of a gap and the other end gave access to the other side of the gap. I respect every man or woman who has served our country by serving in the various arms of the military. But Military intelligence has again brought into question their ability to recognize the difference between a horse and a horses ass.

    • @MAOfights
      @MAOfights 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The M3 is not as modular, cannot be emplaced long-term, cannot handle as large of loads, and requires more operators long-term in order to maintain position.The IRB offers much more flexibility and permits for the commander to really tailor the configuration to meet the mission needs. I like the M3, but I can think of many missions that I have been on where the M3 would have been ineffective.

    to all the idiots who made stupid comments. Yes it is a Ferry. You build the ferry. you cross armored support first to secure the far shore. Then you build a full enclosure over a river to cross uninterrupted traffic.
    And yes it can and has been built under fire. Twice in US military history first an older, more hand constructed version over the Rine in WW2. The second time I'd just as well not discuss. Essayons!

    Did my military service at such a unit 1981 in Sweden. Many exercises at night and opened the bridge for just one to two hours. When opened, it was go go go with almost no lights, very scary when driving heavy vehicles across the river.
    At the same time false bridges were set up. An enemy aeroplane flying at high speed couldn´t see the difference.
    The russians had at the time their version made of steel while ours were made of aluminium.
    As an military activity it is very impressive to have experienced. Those were the days my friend..

    Hmm, as a former engineer officer I also had to built bridges and ferries like these in the 80s.
    Seems to me, they are rather slow with coupling the FFB-segments and wouldn't get by very good, if they had to do this in a river with a flow of 2 to 3 meters per second. That's the challenge, not to perform at lakelike waters in sunny weather.
    If you want to built a FFB ferry or a bridge, you have to be fast as lightning. In our times you normally have betwen 10 to 20 minutes, until enenmy intelligence knows exactly, what you are doing and will attack the floating parts with artillery, drones, gliding bombs and so on. You have exactly three possibilities:
    1. in and out of the water within 20 minutes
    2. to be on the move all the time, with changing docking positions or
    3. you have the absolute air and land superiority (but if you have these, you need no ferry or bridge. The military purpose of these is, to bring the heavy material over deeper waters, fast to the frontlines, after the infantry has cleared a bridgehead on the opposite shore/bank. This means normally, that the zone, where you are acting, is still extremely hot)
    Regard Th. Krapf
    normally

    Nice,
    Reminds me of my time at dutch 105th corp of engineers in 1988
    Building this floating bridge in 45 minutes (!) with a lenght of 135 meters (About 443 ft) across a big river during poor circumstances in winter
    It’s original a Russian invention and probably updated by us corp engineers.
    However , our towboats look to have bigger engines. These boats on the video are smaller and we had 3 parts on our boats with less soldiers to connect the parts.
    I also noticed some dangerous handling of taking a cable away. This guy could lose his fingers or hand in stormy circumstances
    Helmets are ‘not done ‘ in case you will fall in the water
    Connecting by ropes when there is ice on the surface of the bridge will be slippery and can be dangerous. Just let the captain of the boat handle this by steering the parts nicely to the other parts
    Still nice to remember
    And we also used the parts in the Netherlands when a small part of a river broke though a dam and we helped farmers and other civilians in 1989

    This could be useful for a bridgehead and something more permanent but could they do this while being strafed with aircraft, artillery and small arms fire with motors? In almost every battle where the army was attempting to make a bridgehead, the opposing side was defended by the enemy! It would requite lots of support. Can this support tanks?

    • @12cusa67
      @12cusa67 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've never seen aircraft on a irb although I'm sure it can but yes to the rest from personal experience it can hold the weight

    • @nightlightabcd
      @nightlightabcd 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Alex Wong - So, it's main purpose is behind the front to allow tanks and support to reinforce the front, assuming that there is a front! This would be a good thing for often the enemy has destroyed the bridges, or sometime the US destroys the bridges to contain the enemy!

    • @nightlightabcd
      @nightlightabcd 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      12cusa - What is a "ireb"? Never the less, I'm pretty sure that this would be easier to put up than a pontoon bridge or a constructed bridge under fire!

    • @MAOfights
      @MAOfights 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is absolutely nothing like the Bailey Bridge. Float Bridging has been around longer than the idea of modular steel framed bridges. Heck, the Bailey Bridge has been improved on by the Mabry-Johnson and others. Still can't beat the Bailey for it's variety though: I know many which have been permanently emplaced by municipalities.

      It is the first one i saw being built. My dad was a welder and he was repairing one for the Canadian Legion for something or other. It's a good one. Having said that, Archimedes had a bridge that did the same kind of thing. Been around for a very long time which figures, it solves a very important difficulty

    Задействовать три машины ,две под понтон ,одну под катер , чтоб перевезти грузовик и 30 пехотинцев, на тихоходном пароме который, легко распиздошитт с чего угодно, а всех положить достаточно одного снайпера на берегу. В боевых условиях невыгодное и затратное средство доставки.

      The only place you're likely to find "Heavy water" is in a Nuclear Reactor. If you see a "Heavy water stream", I'd say run, but its not as if you'll be able to tell its heavy water.
      .
      Coming back to your question, they can build bridges upto 100 meters long (or even more if required). Indian Army is one of the best at this because Pakistan's primary defence against India, especially in Punjab, consists of a network of canals that all form a defensive barrier. And so Indian Army pays special attention to canal crossing ops. These days, DRDO is building newer generation bridges like Sarvatra Bridging System (22 bridges already inducted), Short Span Bridging System (110 on order) and the Amphibious Floating Bridge and Ferry System (AFFS, under development).
      .
      As for how these bridges are defended, the first action is to establish a defensive head on the other bank of the canal. These are then reinforced by Infantry Combat Vehicles that can simply float across like a boat. They are further supported by Artillery and Attack Helicopters. This way, they protect the area where bridge is to be made.

    Impressive, yet manual work 😁 we have the technology to do that with the touch of the button, by the time soldiers need to asemble this the war has finished

    • @Anonymous-mi6
      @Anonymous-mi6 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      But this is better because construction of a concrete/metal bride takes years to complete and at the time of war if the concrete/metal bridges are to be destroyed then this is the only way. It is better to construct a bridge manually which might take a few days rather than years (where war would surely end).

    • @ram2791
      @ram2791 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, on a computer its touch of a button. In real life we bridged rivers in hours so the armor and infantry could roll on. Often under fire. Instead of months to years.

      When moving large amounts of vehicles, the ferry option is of no use.
      You have the time window to think of.
      Transport as fast as you can before enemy discovers you and fire at you!
