    One thing I’ve learned about more expensive batteries is that the engineering going into them tend to be better. Overall life span, better power regulation and distribution for both powering and also receiving power when getting charged, and overall build quality. I’d pay 400 bucks for a core 140 versus 130 bucks for a d and o lighting 190 battery. I already had one catch fire.

    Hey, Meshna, I Love this rig! Thanks for making this awesome rig/video.
    I got most of the parts, along with the 99 Smallrig battery. Even though I switched the camera to running USB-C delivery, I can't get the camera to turn on without a battery in the FX-3. I am also running V4.0. You didn't state it; assumed switching to USB delivery would forego the use of a battery in the body. 🤷🏽‍♂️😕
    Do you have a battery in the body as well? Or are able to run it the camera solely from the small rig battery?

    • @kylemeshna
      @kylemeshna  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yeah you still need to keep the battery in the body. It’s basically like having it plugged into a power outlet, so it’ll be keeping the battery charged

       @kylemeshna Amazing; thanks for the lightning-fast response, Kyle! • @TheShockwave44

    7:45 Are you still using the Sony battery in the camera or not? The whole point of a dummy battery is to reduce the overheating time.

    Is there a solution to clamp the USB-C cable at the camera to prevent it from breaking off? I get that the USB-C vs dummy battery solution is safer overall, but on its own it seems like the fragile USB-C connection is bound to snap off which presents it's own threat to the system.

    Looking for a FX3 rig which is Manfrotto Nitrotech compatible . I like yours, efficient and effective. Just two comments: wouldnt 9 inch rods be better so you can close the FX3 screen? Smallrig even as carbon fiber 9 inch rods if I am not mistaken. I like the Smallrig battery but as you say: 50Wh is a bit tight and the price is too steep.

    For me top handles introduce a lot of shake in the image, it’s just physics: “give me a long enough lever and I can move the earth” - Archimedes, which basically means the longer a lever is, the more leverage it has to move the item at the other end, hence tiny movements of your hand when holding a top handle are then amplified the longer the handle is..
    I’ve never understood why someone would want a top handle other than for low angle shots, which you could just use a gimbal with a bucket handle for unless you intentionally want a skate-video type shake in your footage.

    • @TallManMedia
      @TallManMedia 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Arguably it reduces the shake by distancing the shake from the body when use in conjunction with another hold point such as under the camera. One handed sure, but the further the two points of contact the less shake generally. Personally I prefer a side handle but some do like the top down as well as the fact its a good hold point by your side

    • @RustyShackleford9000
      @RustyShackleford9000 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@TallManMedia “distancing the shake from the body” makes zero sense. Adding a lever will amplify movement made at the end being held at the other end, that’s why if you cast with a fishing rod, the handle is only moving about a foot or two, but the tip is moving 6 or 7 feet back and forth. The only things that are gonna reduce shake are adding weight to the camera rig, or ibis/oss lenses, or a gimbal.

    • @TallManMedia
      @TallManMedia 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@RustyShackleford9000 Using physics, it comes down to the point of leverage. Its not distance, its ratio.

    • @TallManMedia
      @TallManMedia 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Imagine in this example, your hand is at the rod tip, and the sensor is the handle of the rod. You'd have to move the tip of the rod a lot, to effect the sensor. You got the right concept, just not the right outcome.
      The reason this works is the center point is the sensor, or the middle in this example, not the hand.
      @@RustyShackleford9000

    • @RustyShackleford9000
      @RustyShackleford9000 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@TallManMedia the word you’re looking for is “fulcrum”, which in this case is pretty much in the same spot most of the time since one end of the lever is attached to the “load” aka camera, and one end is being held in the user’s hand. And most handles only offer a slight variation in hand position. The closer the hand is to the load, and the shorter the lever is, the less shake there will be at the sensor, but any handle will still produce more shake than holding the body directly, and for about the same weight as many cage rigs, you could just have a gimbal if you don’t want shake. (Even a full cinema camera with auto ND etc like the fx6 can easily fit on a DJI rs3 pro.) If you DO want shake, do handheld and use a top handle. There is a time and place for camera shake.
      Think about it: if you have a camera on the end of a selfie stick, vs gripping it directly in your hands, which will have more potential for shake? It’s the same principle with a handle, just on a smaller scale. It may not have the image super jerky but it will introduce small micro-shakes and jitters into the footage unless it’s a very heavy rig like an fx9 or Venice or arri classic or like a red with a huge v mount battery and heavy lens/cage. The only thing that’s gonna stop shake when holding a camera hanging down by the top handle is weight on the camera itself. But still less stable than holding closer to the body.

    Question:
    I currently use a Canon 77D for all my video, it was my starter camera and I only recently graduated college to start working in the film industry, where I will mostly be doing my own personal projects (meaning I want to start building a collection of my own gear). I love this rig and would love to have something like it, but with student loans and other expenses, it would be a long, slow process to start affording this stuff, especially with the biggest purchases (camera + lens) being the first ones I would want to make.
    I am trying to decide whether it would be better to start building a rig around my 77D, knowing that I will eventually not be able to use some of the equipment I purchase for it, or just use the camera as is until I can fully build a rig like this around a nicer camera.
    Let me know what you think! (open to everyone in the comments too)

      Stick with a camera strap to help get a 3rd point of contact around your neck for now.
      Save up to get a better camera and don’t worry about rigging it out to start. Just get something like an fx30 and a used zoom lens

    If I get you correct about that SmallRig V Mount Battery is you can charge it with a USB-C cable, right? Or do you still need D-Tap Charger for that specific one?

    The Ninja V is why you are running out of Battery (v mount). The Ninja is one of th emost power hungry montiros / records on the market. It uses almost 3x more power than a smallHD or portkeys. If you are not using it for recording might as well pick up a different monitor, now you got less weight and can power your rig with the smallrig 50w battery.

     @kylemeshna HI i want to buy the fx3 dont know much about film, but im willing to learn can u tell me for someone whos starting out. will the camera plus lens be enough? i noticed theres a lot of gear people have. what would u recommend to buy to be clear fx3 is really what i want. and what lens size u recommend for shooting real estate vidoes?

    • @kylemeshna
      @kylemeshna  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you're just getting started, I think the FX3 is probably overkill. If you have the budget though... its an incredible camera.
      For real estate I'd recommend looking at either the Sony 16-35 (the GM or PZ version depending on budget) or the Tamron 17-28.
      And yes, if you're just getting started, then just get the camera and lens. Worry about the other stuff once you get the hang of things a bit more

    Hello. I am a student studying camera. I want to set up a rig, but I'm curious of battery running time. I use A7M4 (24-70 GM2). I will use the monitor (Feelworld) and camera while charging at the same time. How many hours can I shoot with the VB50 when charging both camera and monitor? and how many hours for VB99?

      Yeah I guess, I have both the fx3 and the osmo pocket. Of course a $4,000+ full frame mirrorless will be better cinematic wise but it’s still doesn’t have global shutter, internal nd, etc. so what makes a cinema camera a cinema camera? for the price and how simple they are to use I would argue that the osmo is one of the best consumer “cinema” cameras. 4k 120fps and 10bit And dlog footage for $650 is quite impressive lol
