What a masterpiece Peter Townsend and Roger Daltry and John Entwistle this is my all time favorite song to hear Peter sing this is just amazing!! Freaking awesome so badass! Don't we all wish Peter sang more !Just kills this song Peter your voice is so underrated!
Pete has just enough self-doubt and insecurity as a guitar player that when The Who played Woodstock, they were scheduled to come on immediately after Jimi Hendrix, but Pete refused and said the band would play before Jimi or not at all! And so it was.
@@BruceMcKinley Speaking of Hendrix, there's also this absolute belter: Hendrix blew into a version of [Howlin’ Wolf’s] ‘Killing Floor’,” recalls Garland, “and plays it at breakneck tempo, just like that - it stopped you in your tracks.” Altham recalls Chandler going backstage after Clapton left in the middle of the song “which he had yet to master himself”; Clapton was furiously puffing on a cigarette and telling Chas: “You never told me he was that fucking good.”
Saw them in person for the first time in St. Louis in October, 2022, with my 17 year old grandson. I’m 72 and I have been to hundreds of concerts in my lifetime and I can honestly say I was blow away by the entire concert, but when they did this song! Holy Moly! I’m hooked. Rates in the top five concerts of my life. Absolutely amazing and my grandson was knocked out! He’ll remember it for his entire life!
Watch closely and pay attention. This is what they used to call “rock & roll”. Played by a “super band”. They used to roam the earth in the late 20th century. They would put out an album of hit songs about once each year. Every song on the album was brilliant. There were very few throw away pieces of the pop shit you hear today. God I miss good music!
Stan Williams, me too. Grew up in LA. Saw The Who, 5th row center. Blew my fucking mind! Best concert of my life. Saw Pink Floyd during the Animals tour. Saw some of the greatest concerts of all time. They are all gone now.
I watched this on TV in the 70's and was mesmerized by this music, I'm 59 now and I'm still mesmerized. Pete Townsend is a beast of a guitar player. And Roger usually does the lead vocals. But seeing them when I was so young taught me not to judge a book by its cover.
You can't improve on absolute perfection. This song, sang live in Toronto in 1982, was absolute perfection. Pete's playing was incredible. I'd rather listen to this over the studio recording any day of the week.
John The Ox Entwistle...just standing off to the side with his cool self...outta the way...workin that bass like it needed to be worked!! Love the way he works!!
I love how the camera focuses on Townshend and Daltry. Meanwhile Entwistle stands there and lays down what is the soul of this song. So many don't even realize, Entwistle IS the sound.
Robert Corso Just what I was gonna say. I wish they showed him more than for just 3 or 4 seconds right at the very end. He adds so much to the music. Daltrey is sitting there looking goofy playing the same couple of notes over and over just so he has something to do, meanwhile he gets like half the exposure here.
Robert Corso As per usual. So many vids where The Ox was laying down killer lines with no camera acknowledgement. I'd love to see more of what he was playing! Was surprised at how very much I missed his playing when I caught them live in 2006.
I think this is my new favourite song. I can’t stop listening to it! I’m blown away by the awesome talent. Where’s the modern day equivalent?? No where to be seen.
There's lots of great talent out there, all you have to do is move with the times and expand your musical taste. I was a huge Who fan during their Keith Moon era, and even in the post-Moon era, but eventually I grew tired of hearing the same songs and the same sounds over and over again.
@gringo loco2 NO BETTER way to SAY it!!! This video is an excellent example of the GREAT AUDIO available in 82!!! Especially for a LIVE recording!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
There is none mate hence why I keep finding oldies I ain't heard and being floored by them because the shite we have on our airwaves every day is absolute trash nothing more
Man Pete could bring it. The Who was so talented across the board ... drums, bass, and lead are out of this world good. Pete should be considered one of the best.
It’s not often you heard a Who track with Townsend on the vocals, but when he stepped up. You knew he was gonna blow you away. The greatest band to come out of West London. No questions asked, no quarter given.
The first 2 minutes where we see Pete caress that guitar along with his facial expression shows how much passion he has for that song. Such an underrated guitarist
Underrated by who, your grandma? I swear to God in every video there's some J.O. whose just got to make an 'underrated' comment. Is it the same idiot or what? Good grief. Edit: Oh, aparently 'quite a few' web sites don't mention his 'axe skills'. Sheesh. Well there you have your 'proof" folks .. underrated it is. 😅
Just recently caught the Who in Jacksonville FL, 2022, 40 years after this show and Pete knocked it out of the park!!!! Rock royalty...We are not worthy...
Oh totally, I hadnt seen this vid in a long time. And watching Pete go right into it and thinking "Man, that was a tasty solo, note for note". Then I read your comment. You've got a good pair of ears John.
26 years old here born in the mid to late 1990s. My earliest memories are riding in my dads 1993 dodge pickup truck blaring THE WHO on the cassette deck, the cars, tears for fears, guns n roses, phill Collins, Steve earl, the list goes on. So many older people are amazed at what I listen to. Strictly 70s 80s 90s music. This kind of music has a soul, not made to make money. Times were different and I am jealous of every person who go to experience the 1980s as an adult such a magical time it seemed to be from the outside looking in. It’s a put on.
the key is, they played instruments to make music back then. :) you have great musical taste, don't let anyone tell you different, if they do, just say I prefer instruments to make music not a computer.
DD57, I am almost 70 years old and have embraced music through the decades but anything after 1993 or so (post Nirvana) is shit. Why do I think that? Because it has no heart or soul, as you so aptly put it! Rock on, youngblood!
I'm 63, they have many songs they have wrote. From the beginning untill the end. My girlfriend and I saw them in Orlando in their first fairwell tour sponsored by some beer co. They were great, they played alot of their old tunes. Has fast time has gone by, and all the Great groups have gone God bless everyone of our 60and,70s groups that are gone ,but they are not forgotten.
Paul Johnson The Ox was and is arguably the best bassist in the history of rock and roll. His fingers always made me think of a tarantula the way they plucked the strings.
I could not agree more. Super Under Rated. John Entwhistle was Phenomenal / Super Talented. Saw them live & he went off. long live The Who = Legendary - Michael Caz - NYC -
I loved Pete's solo just when you thought he was going to lose it and go off the rails, he shows his mastery of his instrument and pulls himself back with just the right note. This is MY favorite WHO track I listen to it ALL the time. It just grooves Entwhistle on bass OMG 😱😱😱
I'd be honored if some Who/P.T. fans would check out my acoustic piano & vocal covers of SLIT SKIRTS and A LITTLE IS ENOUGH on my channel in tribute to the master. Live acoustic with no digital editing. Thanks and peace.
The Who played in Dublin, Ireland in 1965, I was 8 rows back in that cramped hall. I was 15 yo. I am still listening to the Who. I am 74 now. Thanks guys for the music that enriched my life.
Townshend was only 37 at the time and had already released almost all of The Who's entire catalogue, establishing the band as one of the greatest in the annals of rock and roll, and he had already produced a couple outstanding solo albums as well. It is doubtful that we will be blessed with that high level of creative output ever again.
There have been others... Paul Weller, Joe Strummer come to mind. I'm sure other people will name more. Not trying to take anything away from PT, he was a genius, no doubt.
I heard Pete say in an interview once that they hated playing this song live because they had to follow the prerecorded synth track that didn't allow for any improvisations.
Every time I hear tjis track it blows my socks off. Its pure quality Jimmy show ,I've searched & searched to see if anyone can get near this brilliant band I've struggled they are simply a cut about the rest .
the best version of this song out there The band is super tight, the groove is on, Roger is smiling (Happy 79th Birthday Roger) Pete is proud, John is shredding, Kenny is in the pocket, and Tim has got a great percussive melody happening. All of it, FANTASTIC
Absolute monster... I've seen the Who many times, including this '82 tour. However, the John Entwistle Band did a mid 90's club tour ... sat right in front of him and his huge live rig... what a night that was. Viewing and especially hearing his playing ability and tone directly in front of his concert rig in a moderate size club show was everything I could ask for! As a FOH audio engineer, and being part of live events of all sizes, I've had the good fortune to see essentially everyone that performs live over the last few decades. That particular night in front of JE was truly magical.
This was the time when Pete was keeping his best songs for his epic 80's solo albums. He's a great songwriter and The Who would have been zero without him
Well, Pete has always been The Who. He's always written the songs alone, and then introduce the others to it. And of course, offering suggestions of how he wanted it done. There's a great documentary simply named "Who's Next". It shows Pete Gett'n It Done. I feel he's underappreciated, just say'n
Hard to be a great band without a great composer, but the others were needed to round out the musical talent and vocals. Pete was the only essential one, though.
You know I was eighteen in 1969. It was a different year, it was a different time in life. It’s all different today the music everything. The old still tops the new in my opinion.
I was playing this song over and over real loud in my room when I was a kid and my stepdad opened the door and yelled "Turn this sh*t off!". I turned the volume down at first, but I gradually turned it up over an hour or so. He burst into my room and picked up my stereo and smashed it on the ground - and it didn't turn off! He tried again and it kept on playing - even louder! This went on for about 5 minutes and he eventually gave up. He's in prison now for writing bad checks.
LOL - I listened to plenty of loud R&R in the 80's when I was young. I remember my dad walking into my room when AC/DC was jamming "I'm a problem Child" and he would say yes you are. I remember him looking at the Jim Morrison poster on my wall with the denim shirt and aviators, and him saying to me "I worry that you like him". I remember him looking at my Cheap Trick poster and telling me Rick Neilson looks like a fag lol. Old men just don't get it. Thankfully I get constant praise from my two grown sons for remaining very cool and up with the times.
Saw this tour, Day on the Green with T-Bone Burnett and the Clash. Some of the folks I went with did not make it through the Clash, due to taking to many mushrooms. They spent the concert in the Haight Ashbury medical tent. I made it through. The entire concert was awesome!!

I remember as a16 year old walking into woolworths 1982 and purchasing the album It's Hard. Listened to It over and over again.
Yelp I was 22 Great album 👍
Man that bass is so rich....Entwistle kills it with a dynamic bass line.

The bass tone is so powerful. Makes the song.

John Entwistle was truly a force of nature. That bass line is amazing
This song is epic. I had a chance to see The Who back in the late 70's 70's in Chicago. It's now 2023 and they are a legend. They're music 🎶 lives on.
Me too in NYC 👏🏼👏🏼🙋🏻♀💚
@@BruceMcKinley ~ That was Monterey.
Pete’s searing opening guitar solo is just incredibly CLEAN
One of the best solos I’ve heard. Timing and soulful.
He's THE tone king! And it's blistering here.
Its angry sounding. Period.
He ran a "whiff" thru the guitar to get that sound
pure orgasmic
You know it's a badass song when the solo starts at the very beginning before the lyrics even start.
100% true
Yeah, one of my all time favorite rock intros!
Great example is "Money for Nothing." ~ Dire Straits.
It's now 2024 June 1st. Another year has gone by. The Who has really made rock n roll a legend.
still one of my favorite WHO songs 40 yrs later
Like a fine wine, this gets better with age.
My favorite Who song and I was born in 1981.
Hellz yeah
Saw them in person for the first time in St. Louis in October, 2022, with my 17 year old grandson. I’m 72 and I have been to hundreds of concerts in my lifetime and I can honestly say I was blow away by the entire concert, but when they did this song! Holy Moly! I’m hooked. Rates in the top five concerts of my life. Absolutely amazing and my grandson was knocked out! He’ll remember it for his entire life!
😎👍👌
Lucky to have you as a gp
Need another concerto! 😊
And he will think of you👍
Watch closely and pay attention. This is what they used to call “rock & roll”. Played by a “super band”. They used to roam the earth in the late 20th century. They would put out an album of hit songs about once each year. Every song on the album was brilliant. There were very few throw away pieces of the pop shit you hear today. God I miss good music!
They wrote full time and worked their asses off.
heard of and seen many a legend, P FLOYD, STONES, oh bro.

I'd rather listen to this over the studio recording any day of the week.
...and twice on Sunday.
The studio recording sucks compared to this.
Yeah. Studio recordings are usually inferior.
Agreed
They absolutely crushed it, just amazing
It amazes me how flawless this live performance sounds... This is simply a perfect song.
Makes me at times feel more alive. First mother's day without my mom. Thank you
Me too. I miss my Mom
John The Ox Entwistle...just standing off to the side with his cool self...outta the way...workin that bass like it needed to be worked!! Love the way he works!!
First last tour ....😂👍🏻🇨🇦
Riot squad tried to shut us down , fire hoses didnt work , finally white noise . Joe Jackson run off the stage . Fuckin priceless .😂👍🏻🇨🇦
RIP John
I love how the camera focuses on Townshend and Daltry. Meanwhile Entwistle stands there and lays down what is the soul of this song. So many don't even realize, Entwistle IS the sound.
Robert Corso Just what I was gonna say. I wish they showed him more than for just 3 or 4 seconds right at the very end. He adds so much to the music. Daltrey is sitting there looking goofy playing the same couple of notes over and over just so he has something to do, meanwhile he gets like half the exposure here.
Robert Corso wow...didnt even notice your comment, exactly correct...the little camera bits of Entwhistle at the end just increase the torment.
Robert Corso As per usual. So many vids where The Ox was laying down killer lines with no camera acknowledgement. I'd love to see more of what he was playing!
Was surprised at how very much I missed his playing when I caught them live in 2006.
It's hard to miss Daltry, swinging the guitar around like that, to draw attention to himself.
This song is just awesome!!
I think this is my new favourite song. I can’t stop listening to it! I’m blown away by the awesome talent. Where’s the modern day equivalent?? No where to be seen.
This one definitely gets you hooked!
There's lots of great talent out there, all you have to do is move with the times and expand your musical taste. I was a huge Who fan during their Keith Moon era, and even in the post-Moon era, but eventually I grew tired of hearing the same songs and the same sounds over and over again.
Keep going back in time my friend...it keeps getting better....
This is certainly one of the most powerful rock songs at all.

It’s not often you heard a Who track with Townsend on the vocals, but when he stepped up. You knew he was gonna blow you away. The greatest band to come out of West London. No questions asked, no quarter given.
THE WHO !!!!WHO ELSE !!!!!!!THE BOLLOX g
You must be on..... the Dust
Yeah I’m actually surprised how clear his voice is outside of the studio. Usually live performances voices sound washed out but this is pretty strong.
How many bands came out of West London?
Pete literally sang like half of Tommy with Roger...
I'm listening in Dec 2024. I always thought this was a terrific song!
The first 2 minutes where we see Pete caress that guitar along with his facial expression shows how much passion he has for that song. Such an underrated guitarist
And then he smashes the fuck out of it into the stage!
Says who ?
Quite a few web sites actually. They bang on about Hendrix, Clspton, Page, Berry, Van Halen etc,. but rarely mention the axe skills of Townsend
We are worthy, rock royalty he may be,but to have pictures of kids on his computer makes him lower than low.
One of the nastiest, riff-iest songs of all time. Absolutely classic, Pete'll never get his due as a lead guitarist.
Right Oh
Pete writes great keyboard songs like Eminence Front, Baba O'Reilly, and Won't Get Fooled Again.
At least he'll give that guitar its dues
Most people I know would say he’s one of the best
Sick riff
Sign of a great rock group. They produce one of their best songs in late-middle career. Pete's dancing is great. Really knew how to move
Pete’s in fine form here, that for sure! 😅
He may had some a little❄️❄️❄️😂

Pete Townsend's intro solo was amazing... Love it.
Oh totally, I hadnt seen this vid in a long time. And watching Pete go right into it and thinking "Man, that was a tasty solo, note for note". Then I read your comment. You've got a good pair of ears John.
He’s so goofy, I freakin love it
26 years old here born in the mid to late 1990s.
I truly agree
You have great taste young man. Rock on!!!
the key is, they played instruments to make music back then.
I was 27 in 1993! I'm getting old! 😂
Outstanding guitar playing from Pete!
@@michaelleonardis1540 I was there.
I almost had the keyboardist in my band in 2021.
Entwistle was an absolute beast of a bass player.
Yeah, shame he was the only one they DIDN'T have a camera on until the end, for about half a second.
Paul Johnson The Ox was and is arguably the best bassist in the history of rock and roll. His fingers always made me think of a tarantula the way they plucked the strings.
I like to say that to say what clapton Wars to guitar he was to bass guitar.

Pete Townshend doesn't get sufficient acknowledgement that he is a hugely gifted creative genius.
i t hink he does..my fav who song
I'd be honored if some Who/P.T. fans would check out my acoustic piano & vocal covers of SLIT SKIRTS and A LITTLE IS ENOUGH on my channel in tribute to the master. Live acoustic with no digital editing. Thanks and peace.
He does at my house.

He's okay for a part time puffer .
The Who played in Dublin, Ireland in 1965, I was 8 rows back in that cramped hall. I was 15 yo. I am still listening to the Who. I am 74 now. Thanks guys for the music that enriched my life.
I remember driving while this song played on K-DST.

Not driving flying an airplane with this playing is better
Townshend was only 37 at the time and had already released almost all of The Who's entire catalogue, establishing the band as one of the greatest in the annals of rock and roll, and he had already produced a couple outstanding solo albums as well. It is doubtful that we will be blessed with that high level of creative output ever again.
There have been others... Paul Weller, Joe Strummer come to mind. I'm sure other people will name more.
Not trying to take anything away from PT, he was a genius, no doubt.

Greatest Bass Guitarist of all time here, John Entwhistle, and some tasty lead guitar on the intro. Townshend is a genius!
This was by far one of the best songs The Who ever put out. Pete was awesome.
Agreed. Most classic rock fans tend to look back at all of the earlier work, I think this was the best.
I heard Pete say in an interview once that they hated playing this song live because they had to follow the prerecorded synth track that didn't allow for any improvisations.

the best version of this song out there The band is super tight, the groove is on, Roger is smiling (Happy 79th Birthday Roger) Pete is proud, John is shredding, Kenny is in the pocket, and Tim has got a great percussive melody happening. All of it, FANTASTIC
This song is so badass...you can't help turn the volume up, up, waaay up.... ✌🏾👍🏾
Amazing moment in rock and roll history. Thanks TH-cam for taking me back to the future.
Those little mini bass fills that entwhistle is putting in at 4:30 but still keeping the solid dance jam going with the bass anchor.

He was such a beast. That tone is fucking amazing too. Same with Petes tone in the intro solo.... Burning tone
I know. Is like a drug, RIGHT!?
Absolute monster...
I've seen the Who many times, including this '82 tour. However, the John Entwistle Band did a mid 90's club tour ... sat right in front of him and his huge live rig... what a night that was.
Viewing and especially hearing his playing ability and tone directly in front of his concert rig in a moderate size club show was everything I could ask for!
As a FOH audio engineer, and being part of live events of all sizes, I've had the good fortune to see essentially everyone that performs live over the last few decades.
That particular night in front of JE was truly magical.
This may be their best performance of this iconic song. PT’s guitar work is ridiculous, the lyrics are sublime. Love be this.
This was the time when Pete was keeping his best songs for his epic 80's solo albums.
He's a great songwriter and The Who would have been zero without him
you are correct sir
Fact
Well, Pete has always been The Who. He's always written the songs alone, and then introduce the others to it. And of course, offering suggestions of how he wanted it done. There's a great documentary simply named "Who's Next". It shows Pete Gett'n It Done. I feel he's underappreciated, just say'n
Hard to be a great band without a great composer, but the others were needed to round out the musical talent and vocals. Pete was the only essential one, though.
You know I was eighteen in 1969. It was a different year, it was a different time in life. It’s all different today the music everything. The old still tops the new in my opinion.
Can't believe I was 10 years old when this came out... A timeless treasure from another time....
This song is pure genius.
Sorry about your dad..Keith Moon would love this story.
That's a cool story bro.Sorry about your pappy though.Be all right...
epic story
What a fucking dick!!! I mean w.t.f. who doesnt like The Who?
LOL - I listened to plenty of loud R&R in the 80's when I was young. I remember my dad walking into my room when AC/DC was jamming "I'm a problem Child" and he would say yes you are. I remember him looking at the Jim Morrison poster on my wall with the denim shirt and aviators, and him saying to me "I worry that you like him". I remember him looking at my Cheap Trick poster and telling me Rick Neilson looks like a fag lol. Old men just don't get it. Thankfully I get constant praise from my two grown sons for remaining very cool and up with the times.
One of the few songs I could listen to over and over ...all day long...
Saw this tour, Day on the Green with T-Bone Burnett and the Clash. Some of the folks I went with did not make it through the Clash, due to taking to many mushrooms. They spent the concert in the Haight Ashbury medical tent. I made it through. The entire concert was awesome!!
