Everything has a use if you use it for that use! Profound I know! Im not a fan of them either but I have looked at them for my 200. I live remote north WA, so lizards don’t really factor into my reasoning as I grew up in the bush of the NT and lizards were a part of every day life…it’s the people that I’m worried about!! Good review.
If you’ve grown up with them then your view of them would be completely different to a southerner like me so that makes total sense. I have found it useful for just the quick overnight trip and it’s very comfortable because I don’t need to worry about the one rock I end up setting the swag on 😂. But you are entirely right. Everything has its use in the right place.
@@Australian4x4Adventures put me in the water where a shark is…heart attack material mate…I have an ungodly fear of them. The first marine animal I caught was a shark and the bugger bit me…just a little reefy but that was enough to send my PTSD into the atmosphere 🤣🤣🤣🤣
For me to use it less than 10 times a year, i will rather stick to my tent for overnight trips or the camper trailer for longer periods. You have to weigh up the initial cost & the additional weights on the roof, plus as you mentioned the extra height. 🤠
Camping at Christmas my mate was still trying to get his rooftop tent set up, while I already had my centre pole touring tent up and had boiled the billy.
Yep, got a tent like that! Does not leak water or crawlers. It’s great except… Pegging four corners into rocky ground. Ant nests, scorpions, snakes, goanna, wild donkey etc etc The ground heat or damp cold. Clearing ground patch of animal droppings, gum tree nuts, prickle weeds even broken glass and chewing gum. Now this is subjective but my observations are people put all the crap / gas/ fuel water and max tracks on a roof rack and possibly the tent or then drag out a Tent. 🤷🏻 Pillows, mattress and bedding clutter in vehicle and exposed to dust and dirt. 🤷🏻🙃 PS : got a tent trailer, roof top and my trusty centre pole so it’s horses for courses, depends where I go👍
G'Day, It looked so awkward trying to set up and pack up, I recon you would have been better off with one of those side opening RTT rather than a rear opening RTT. The side opening RTT is accessed, set up and down all from the one side, and is similar in design with canvas extensions and star gazing windows. I could no longer use swags with my back injury (arthritic) even though I like them, and find them confortable, the cold tends to pass through the PVC bucket floor and mattress and buggers my back the following day. I invested in a RTT before covid hit and it's been the best thing for me since sliced bread, with regards to my back. I enjoy camping again with better mobility, and I don't even need a lounge chair anymore to take breaks which is a big plus. It used to kill me rolling up a double swag with a bad back, but with the rear accessible RTT it takes literally a minute to set up and pack up, whilst I stand upright on a ladder, (no more bending over). Anybody who has a back injury knows what a game changer this is. I have my RTT mounted to the canopy so weight really isn't an issue as it can handle 300kg+. The weight on the roof of a vehicle is a different issue. If anybody has arthritic back issues, I would definitely recommend a good RTT and get off the ground.
I probably made it look harder then it needed to be ( I did have many flu at the time haha ). I looked into the side opening tents but they all had the extra flaps that required the spring pole to hole out. I’ve had similar in the past and I’ve always found the shake at night when it windy. The sanhima design ( although not perfect ) doesn’t have any loose material to flap in high winds. That was a big selling point for me anyway. Thank you for your feedback and I’m glad a rooftop has worked out for you with your back issues.
Great honest vid. Having just bought the San Hima Kalbarri I am feeling more confident taking it for its maiden voyage in the rain in Manjimup this weekend 👍
@@Australian4x4Adventures fairly sure that looks to be so, seems you took the hardest line. The Adventra you seen last year at the Autobarn event did similar line might help you get an idea of whats going on capabaility wise.
you mentioned your tent is 60kg, but the link youve attached says 90kg? is this a typo? I also have a 100kg roof load limit and trying to work out how to fit a RTT plus my 270 awning
Good to see you discussing the actually Roof Load Rating not just that of the roof rack. I know the Gen 3 (mine) & Gen 4 Pajeros have a Roof Load Rating of 100kg but it is also meant to be reduced by 30% when on "Unsealed" roads. I hate RTT's personally. As you said they are ugly and I think way too heavy to be keeping on the roof of your vehicle especially if it stays on all the time. I also don't like the thought of climbing up & down that ladder of a night especially if you have had a few.
I've had rooftop tents for about 10 years, and I think they're fantastic. However, I do agree that they look like S#$t when left on 4wd around town. I just got too old to climb up and down ladders. But I think there's no going back once you've used a rooftop tent. Keep up the good work. Stev, and enjoy the cape with a rooftop tent.
Same mate , have a bush company RTT and love it , quicker and easier to set up than my double dome swag , all the bedding staying in there is a big bonus
What? $5k for a roof top tent that’s crazy what a rip off. I got my 2nd hand 18model Palomino ss550 slide on camper for $18k & that thing is Grouse, pull up anywhere cook food, watch Tv, have a snooze & no towing heavy caravans.
G’day Steve , good presentation as usual mate but after watching all of that I needed a beer !! Most 4x4’s have all the aerodynamics of a house brick and I keep anything on my rack to a necessary requirement as in a sober panel etc. I’ll stick to my swag on a cot thanks bro lol , fits perfectly under my awning too 👍🍻
After watching a slew of YT videos, I went with the Inspired Overland RTT to put on my 2024 Subaru Forester Wilderness. The latest 2.0 version weighs in at just under 80 lbs and is under 5 inches thick when closed.. I paid under $1k for it then got a sweet deal on the shipping.
Was just wondering when you mentioned weights & how it's secured, because the arb base rack is only rated at 20kg per slat with only securing at each end is it technically over the rating? Or if it actually sits on each slat is it considered spreading the load even though its not secured to each slat?
James B don’t have midji mesh, but are one of the few with level ladder treads Nearly every other RTT has the dodgy square treads that cut your feet even with thongs
The san hima Jarvis pro has side awnings, that would solve your heat and rain situation…. Looks awkward to set up and pack away compared to similarly priced RTT’s. I still haven’t pulled the trigger as I just can’t justify the price of something I just don’t see solving my off-road sleeping situation. Great vid 👍🏼
I've just found and subscribed to this channel but I'm wondering if it's worth staying. I don't need to watch negative depressing videos. You put us whingeing poms to shame.

The high position is great for air flow and views ....... beats a swag at HOT or Soaking WET ground level . Also is better than towing ANYDAY !
