If you put a lid on it, drill a small hole towards the top to allow air in. If not, it will create a vacuum and the water won't come out!
True, but depending on the lid most don't seal that well.
I set my bowls, feeders, waterers & their treat tray EVERYTHING on bricks works great. And easier for them to eat & drink. My girls are spoiled. 😉🐓🐔

I found that the most simple of waterers work best, dump them out daily and refill. The more you need to maintenance your animals the sooner you find problems that need to be fixed promptly. Those black rubber bowls up on concrete blocks worked best for me
I have a plasson style waterer under a 55 gallon drum. This is my redundant water source. I have used all different waterers and adult chickens prefer drinking out of LARGE black rubber plastic water “bowls” that I top off every other day. Dump. Clean. Refill. We have 75 chickens.

Lol.ive tried it all. The babies would sleep in the cups. Scratch n poop in all of the things. I used nipples tried the hanging half pipe..i gave in years ago n use dog dishes. Easy clean out quick water change n its good for me 😅luv that kiddos are willing to help n learn!
People, chicken math is REAL!!! They are the gateway drug to homesteading 😂 I started with 5 but ended up having 2 roosters. One was mean, so he went to the crockpot for re-education. Now I have 16?!? I had to make 2 flocks. The last 3 hens I got were all roos, so I ended up with 4 🥴 I was able to give 2 to my neighbors since they had 2 flocks without roos. Now my younger roo only has 5 hens (supposed to be 10+ per), so right now, I have my broody hen on 6 eggs 😵💫 Only use food grade buckets (I get icing buckets free from grocery store bakery) but living in the desert you have to use a big bowl in the summer. Nipples DO NOT provide enough water in 100+ temps!!!

If you use pig nipple waterers and cut the springs they triple the water output, it would probably work out there, but you'd know better than I since I don't live on the Sun. Haha. Thanks for your comment!

We just use rubber bowls in tires. It's easy enough to dump out and change every day or two or three and you don't have to worry about freezing in the winter. Same with our rabbits but we use metal dog bowls because they like to chew anything else.

I haven't seen a better solution than the one I have. I'm not pretending like I came up with it. I saw others do it and I did the same. I posted a much longer version of what I did, so I'll try to make this short.
* get yourself a 55 gallon food grade rain barrel. If it's not black, paint it black.
* drill two holes near the bottom one on top of the other and add bulkhead fittings to both, then PVC garden hose fittings, then stainless steel washing machine hoses
* added a small pump to the outlet garden hose fitting and plug that into a temp controlled outlet (if you live in areas that cold in the winter like I do)
* connect that to a 1" pvc pipe that's 4' long to the pump (you'll need adapters and fittings, of course) and add the nipples mentioned in this video
* more adapters, fittings and then connect the other washing machine hose to it
If you want, you can do what I did and add a 500W heater in the barrel.
If you REALLY want to not do anything, do what I did and connect the gutters from the coop/run to the barrel.
I can go on vacation for a month and just have a neighbor check in on them here and there to make sure all is good. The only issue I haven't solved is how to move the eggs to some type of collection box if no one comes for the eggs. Still thinking about that.
@dontbanmebrodontbanme5403 since we use a 55 gallon drum with ours we can leave it for a long time also. We've got a semi automated self feeder system also. You're right about the egg harvest thing, although I'm thinking of looking at how they do it commercially and see if I can modify it for the homestead.
I do close to the same as you. I had problems with every fancy watering system. Then I discovered the simple rubber bowls. I put mine on concrete blocks to prevent scratch projectiles out and their vents tend to not hover over them when they need to climb up to get a drink. I also found daily maintenance on feeding and watering lead to me finding other problems much sooner.
These nipple waterers are 100 the best solution so far, while they do leak from time to time it usually just needs the o-ring reset as it slipped a little. I use it on a 55 gallon drum for my laying hens, couldnt get a black one but dark blue worked pretty good too, though we got down to -45 this past winter and it did freeze, but with plenty of snow that wasnt an issue as our chickens just ate the snow.

I agree with you totally on those red and white waterers…. Total nightmare!! We have 2 of those ….we bought them this last winter as water chores were killing me each day. I thought the larger waterers would help with this…… nope…. It has unfortunately increased my water chores.
One of them randomly overflows everywhere after filling…. I’ve tired everything…. Waiting for 5 minutes so it can develop the suction… etc…. Then I also tried filling up the tray with water too, before I take the little white cap off…. Nope… still overflows all over the coop sometimes….I can’t figure out why sometimes it does this and sometimes it doesn’t…
Then in our other coop area… we also have the red and white waterer….that one gets a vacuum suction so tight (yes, we keep the lid properly oiled) I can never get the lid off… I will try and hold the waterer with my legs(knees) to get it steady while I twist the black lid off with a stick… many times I have to go get my husband to help and even he struggles to get it off….
Lastly…. They get so filthy, in just minutes…. I have it up on bricks and this helps a little, but yeah…. They get gross .
On the reviews I read online…( that I’m now convinced were not written by real people!!) people claimed they were easy to clean….. um…. Nope… they’re a pain in the arse to clean… in fact, I can’t get the red tray off of the base of the waterer now, to clean…. So I use a paper towel, soaked in vinegar to clean it…..

Every day I deal with this with the baby chicks. I've tried everything. The cup waterers along a 2 x 4 in the chicken tractor with a 5 gallon bucket on top works good for our meat birds. I purchased a wonderful 8 gallon water container from Rural king for our adult hens, the water is under the large container(fills at the top) and has 3 5 inch size legs. It is fabulous.
I now know what I'll be doing with the kitty litter buckets. We inherited some of the gallon tray waterers from the prior owners of our house, so we went with the low low price of free for chicken water this year. That said, between the fouled up water and the fact that there are some kitty litter buckets in the garage just begging for reuse, I may have to switch.

I used the cups for a while but they were always getting nasty. So, I took a 275 gallon IBC tote and screwed on the waterers that look like an orange cross with a tiny rod sticking out over a small bar. I had already been using them for quail. Works fantastic. Set that thing up 4 years ago, still works perfectly. Was nice to be able to set the cross waterers at different heights to accommodate banties and full size, and all ages.

I have been using on of those same litter buckets for about two years. I leave the lid on to keep debris out. It also keeps algae from growing and prevents evaporation.
Put a solid copper wire in it and no more algae
Thank you, I might use for baby chicks. It’s a hot climate here so we use open plastic bowls for the chickens they’re easy to clean and fill and they can take large drinks, generally they don’t poo in them….not sure why that is 😂
We put the waterer above the level of their but and it cuts out most all the issues. It’s really simple actually

Love it! Been using the nipple waterer for several years now. Heads up if you raise the cornish cross, they will stand there and drain all the water. 3 years in a row different birds of course, and they did the same thing.
I have the 5 gal water containers like you showed, and I like it. I put it on a cement block and dirt, etc. don't get into the well area. When they were chicks I used the smaller types and kept them on something as well, so nothing got into the holes.

with the Water Cups, we blast it with the Garden Hose set to Jet each morning when watering the garden, then we let the birds out so they have clean cups. it's like wasing Spoons in the kitchen sink though, so be careful. lol

Ive got the 5 gallon version of what is in your thumbnail. I was given it. At thencost of Free .99 and 2 epoxy patches after 3 years of use, Im satisfied with it. All you have to do to keep chicken mess out and of of it is is place it on a pedestal or pit it up h9gh enough to stay out of the way and glue aome sticks to it to discourage it being landed on. I have 400 chickens so i might be an amateur.

We also use anything free first and look to doodads later. I love these because a 20 pack is like 10 bucks and I can use any plastic thing laying around.

😂😂😂. I love this guy! You vented out all my frustrations with chicken supply poo, to say the least. My best system I made it. 5 gl bucket, a 6' heat trace with temp senser, bought from Grainger, at the time. Used the nipples, but the ones instaled on side of the bucket, 4 of them.

I love the tidy cat buckets with locking lids. I wish they also took that same plastic and made bin style containers to sell the litter in. Like the shape and size of a cat litter pan with a lid. Like a shallow tote. So far, the raccoons haven't figured out how to open the locking lids.

But seriously, watering nipples are far and away the best! I usually utilize the vertical type into a manifold of whatever chunk of PVC pipe I have lying about. The manifold is fed by a siphon from a 5 gallon container so the only place a leak could be is where they're drinking anyway. Next watering project is 2-3 rain catching barrels with a solar-charged battery and temperature-switched pump to circulate through the manifold(s) of any critters (there are larger versions) we might have.
If I'm really slick, I'll add a sight glass and a fill float (yes, toilet tank type, why reinvent it) normally-off but with the valve to it inside the house for the brides convenience in case of dry spells.

I might train the next batch on that system, though the existing flock would need to be gently coerced into making it work. That garbage #1 is currently their water dispenser, and I occasionally curse it just for something to do. Being zone 4a the hens can almost keep the coop above freezing by body heat. The new coop will be something of an improvement. I'm really tempted by the bowl and float design with a heating pad for those -25-30°C daze or nights.
Off topic, I surmise either you're an avid reader by your narrative style, or I'm wrong. Same goes for cheep not being a typo like mine isn't. ;);

I've used these pecking water dispensers for a few years.
Our chickens alway prefer to dip & sip, not peck, peck, peck & sip. I also noticed they're not very efficient. The chicken pecks several times before it figures out the timing to grab that drop of water.
We've had them for years & also had malfunctions no matter how much we cleansed them.
I still use them but more as a back up in the summer as they need more water.
They froze in the winter, even in the coop that we keep at least 38° in the winter.
I offer them in an addition to the traditional water containers for chicks that are at least 2 weeks old, just so they know its a back up in case the other water container gets spilled or dirty.
Important note, they must be installed on a container that doesn't move, like hanging 2-gallon buckets or bottles. The Tidy liter container is great because its heavy & sturdy & can sit up well. Buckets that sit upon bricks or cement blocks do well too.
Also, we place a board on top to keep the lid clean.
(Now, I'll watch the rest of this video... lol)
Haha! If they malfunction, it might be due to the design. There are a bunch that look really similar but are different.
We also have used pig nipple waterers for chickens and they are larger, made of metal, and seem to be much more sturdy and give out more water.

Recently switched to cups on 2 gallon buckets because i cant lift anything bigger. I added them to the drip irrigation system I use to deliver water to all of my coops. Its working out really well and the chickens seem to like them. Im still going to put out wading pans for summer.
Yes to the wading pens! Keeping them cool is key.
Love the drip set up, although depending on geographical location freezing can be an issue. I haven't set one up for the summer yet but it is in the planning.
I have used your trash drinker for 5 years. I have 3 of them 5 gallon capacity. The turkeys peck at the hole when it bubbles so only chickens use them now. I have had 0 problems and they are relatively cheap. Literally raised over 1000 birds on them.
I'm glad you enjoy them! However, the nipple waters are less than 10 bucks so cost isn't an issue.
Everyone has their methods that they like better than others. It isn't that bell waterers can't work, it is just there is a different option that people may like better. @FlannelFarms You implied they were expensive and junk. I find the to be be neither. Also, a friend of mine killed 300 ginny fowel with niples. He set up a 250-gallon tote and the niples. Used them for a year. Went on a 2 week trip, and the birds broke a couple of niples. And flooded the food and ran them out of water. He came home to a disaster since he didn't have anyone check on his birds. Every system has its shortcomings.

I use those on a 5 gal. Bucket. The problem I have had is the chickens hit it so hard it pushes the ring past the stop and then leaks. The fix I take it apart remove the the o-ring take it apart bend the spring a little. Then reinstall, if it leaks a little I use some Vasile around the o-ring works good and lasts. When the o-rings go bad just replace o-ring.
I didn't include it in this video, but they make a pig nipple waterer that is metal and substantially more durable, but you've got to take it apart and cut the spring so it doesnt have so much pressure on it.

You need to move up one level from expert to "lazy person who doesn't like having the chore of watering chickens"!!! This is long, but if you follow it, it just makes your life easier.
I have 8 black Australorps, live where it gets cold and I NEVER have to water my chicks. What did I do?
* had a clear, 55 gallon barrel lying around that used to hold soap. I painted it black.
* I drilled 2 holes near the bottom, one on top of the other and added 2 bulkhead fittings. I then added two pvc garden adapters to that.
* I then attached a stainless steel washing machine hose to one garden adapter and added a small pump on that. I plugged the pump in a temperature controlled outlet that I set to turn on at 37F and off at 41F. I'll explain why I did this part in a bit.
* I attached a 1" PVC pipe to this (obviously adding bushings and fittings to make this happen). The pipe is a little more than 4' long.
* I then put this pipe inside the run and added 5 nipples to it, which is more than enough for my 8 girls. Heck, most of the time they all just fight over 1 nipple anyway!
* Ater more bushing and fittings, I attached another (longer) stainless steel washing machine hose to the other end of the 1" PVC pipe and screwed that to the other bulk head fitting.
In between the bulk head fittings and garden hoses, I actually have a Y splitter with two connectors and shut offs for each. Meaning I can fix the PVC pipe if I have to while not draining the water from the tank. I can also drain water from the tank into a bucket if the need arises without disturbing their setup. Now, there's a few things I did that allows this to work even where I live, where it gets cold in the winter.
* I added a 500W heater in the tank that auto kicks on to make sure the water inside never freezes. I honestly don't know if I need this because, as was mentioned in video, unless you're seeing -20F days, the barrel probably won't freeze enough for this to be an issue. But I have it anyway for insurance.
* the pump right before the PVC bar kicks on at 37F and circulates the warm water in the tank through the pipe to ensure it never freezes. I've only done this 1 winter so far, but the system worked even at 9F.
* what makes it pretty much a system I never have to touch: I have gutters on both the coop and the run. And yep, I have the output going straight into the barrel! We've been getting way more water than normal, even getting about 5 or 6 heavy rains during the winter (unheard of). It's so cool to see that the rain barrel was maybe at 35 gallons and 30 minutes into a heavy rain, it's already full. I'm considering adding another barrel to water greenery I'll have near them in the spring/summer. Who knows.

@FlannelFarms 😂 mine too but I use cat liter tubs for the kitteh poop. I use 5 gal buckets from TTS. Not expensive at all or other waterers. The type you showed does suck but there's a similar one that's way better and I add a little CDS to keep it clean and helps chickens stay healthy.

I'm sorry I've used these for years and have no problems, like anything with chickens keeping things clean is part of a healthy flock. I just place the waterer on a different size block depending on the size of chicken chicken. I made a cone out of sheet metal to sit on top keeps the chickens from sitting on top, no problems
No need to be sorry, and I am replying with only good intentions.
Your comment proves the point. First the nipple waterers keep the water clean, and it sounds like you do a great job keeping their water clean. Second, in order for you to keep your water clean you have to vary the size of your blocks and add a metal to keep it clean, and with this you don't.
It isn't that you can't use the bell waterers, or that you can't keep them clean, but not everyone wants to dedicate that amount of time to it when there are more automated type systems. I appreciate you watching and leaving a comment! Have a lovely weekend:)
I get folks wanting a nice coop but it will be covered in crap soon and you don’t want your dozen of eggs to cost you $54 each. ROI is a thing and up cycling is a thing too. Resume everything you can and you’ll save money and have fresh eggs.
My chickens won't use the nipples. I use the cups in the summer in a 13 gallon container that I can put frozen water jugs in when it's hot. I use something similar to the other kind in the winter but one that has a strainer you lift to toss anything that gets in there. It's also heated.

Do you think the waterers would be Raccoon proof because my chickens are free range and locked up at night and the raccoons come through. And skunks and possums.

I've also switched to pig nipple waterers for chickens but that takes some modifications and most backyard chicken folks don't need that level of strength, but that video is in the works.
@FlannelFarms I use a stainless steel animal water feeder with float valve for my chickens, they prefer it to the nipples, I made a easy clean attachment for it to clean it in less than 30 seconds, I don't buy nothing plastic as water feeders anymore.

My neighbor uses a bucket with nipples hanging off the bottom so she can’t place the bucket on the ground. It also leaks all over the ground when the chickens use them. So she ends up with a messy wet area in the run.
I know people love these but I’ve had success with the other type probably because I hang them (and they are a bit different than the ones shown).

I’ve used these nipple waterers for a few years now. I would be leary using a 55 gallon drum, ‘cause the nippler springs wear out and will begin leaking.
I use pig nipple waterers mostly on the 55-gallon barrels, and those have held up great for the chickens.
You just need to cut the springs a little so it doesn't take as much pressure to activate.

These are fine if you don't worry about them freezing. What's right for you isn't always right for everyone.

Will older chickens raised on the red trays learn how to drink how of this little nipple flange? What makes them want to pec at the stud?
In most cases, yes, I've heard from some people they couldn't get their grown birds to use them. I haven't found that to be the case with my birds.
As for the pecking, I can't scientifically prove it, but I've heard chickens like to peck at stuff that is red. What I can say is if your birds are thirsty and you push the nipple with your finger some water will pool in that little lip on the waterer and when the birds go to drink from that they inadvertently hit the plunger causing more water to come out. It never takes my birds more than a few hours to figure it out.

Great job, but I feel sorry for the chicks because the dispensers aren't high enough to reach and they have to bend their necks down too low😢. Maybe install them at eye level?
You know they drink out of puddles on the ground right? It isn't to low at all. They also eat off the ground. That said, you could set the bucket on a brick.

I have the exact same ones and if you or anyone else knows why but almost every one of mine are leaking from the piston, I'm not sure if I did something wrong when installing them or they're just not good ones.
You can slip the piston out and replace the O ring.

These are the exact ones I use.
The nipples didn’t work for my chickens, they are apparently aggressive drinkers and would destroy one of the spring every other day.

They make a stainless steel pig nipplr waterer. If you get those they are substantially stronger. You do need to cut the spring a little otherwise they won't peck it with enough force, but we've used those for two years out in our free-range flock and they love it.

i have tried them all...and they all fail lol...so i make my waterers from empty 4 liter distilled water bottles ...i use scissors and cut a hole big enough for the chickens to get in to drink...they are easy to make and toss when and if they get dirty ....best of all is...i love the price! free lol

@@FlannelFarmsthanks , I actually just bought those little cup ones the other day and it’s funny I put it on a cat litter box just like you, so those new ones will be a great addition, if you put copper in your water bucket no algae will form!

I haven’t been able to get my adult chickens to drink from a nipple like that. Not yet anyway. I also have ducks too.
If you put a treat on them, something sticky, that can help or take out their other waterers, then wait a hour or so and then push the nipple stud with your finger and it will leave a little water pooled in the red plastic of the waterer and they tend to peck at that which in turn activates the waterer. I hope it helps. Mine love them, and it has saved us a lot of routine chore time with them. Have a great day!

You can get food safe 55 gallon drums, the ones I've seen are old pickle containers.
I haven't looked, but I also don't remember seeing any BPA free chicken waterers, but I haven't bought a bell style in a while.

I can't get my chickens ducks or geese to even try to get water from these. I used an old 3 gallon water jug and it day there fill!

I tried the nipples, and within days they were steadily leaking. Tried two other manufacturers, same thing.
I then tried the cups, and they got filled up with sludge within a day or so, then got pushed side to side enough that they either started leaking or broke off, within a week or two.
Back to the sealed gravity bottle for me.

I see one problem how do you get the chicken to Peck at it
Chickens tend to peck at everything and seem to have an affinity for red stuff.
But, if they don't start pecking at it you can use your finger to squirt some water out and they will take it from there.

If you haven't tried this, maybe put some food on it, peanut butter or something, or try when chicks like you said.
Love the nipples only they seem to leak over time. My guess is from the bucket/gasket connection. They have to sit flush and don't over or under tighten the flange inside the bucket. On my third bucket now. Ugh
Mine haven't leaked ever. Do you have the ones that have a wing nut on the back? You could also JB Weld them in.

Bought some of those from Amazon, and they fell apart after about a month of use
I've had them outside for two years and haven't had any issues. Did you get the kind that screw in or the type with the plastic wing nut on the back?
The wing nut ones aren't any good, the ones we show here don't have anything that can fall apart.

Nipples suck in Arizona you're chickens will get heat stroke
Using a water source to keep them cool is key in high temp locations.
