Thank you, these are great tips and very clear and thought out advice. I'm definitely going to save this video to rewatch when I start my PhD in September.

0:48 You cannot believe how fluid this is in my case! I have so many options for the 2nd part of my project...
1:54 We need to finish within 4 years, but agreed on the task-dividing! Piece by piece
5:04 Indeed, you need to develop self-criticism and self-reliance. So if you have a problem, best to come with x amount of options to circumvent and present these instead of just posing the problem and expecting the PI to solve it.
    6:29 An extra cup of (PhD)Coffee(Time)? ;)
    9:46 BULLSEYE!
    Great list, Vera!

Love your take on the 2 month plan! I would have been much more productive and less stressed if I had done that.

Actually, I'm not sure why I watched this video... because its something I perhaps needed much earlier. However, your calm, organized and sincere explanation definitely helped me understand some points better 👍
To be honest, I very recently exited PhD after 5 yrs with an MS (Research). And, now I am kind of clueless about what should be my future direction. My social and personal life is also hazy and causes anxiety. Basically, right now I kinda hate this all-or-nothing, uncertain gamble called PhD. I find learning about my research area interesting, but I'm not sure if I'm really into always being on the bleeding edge, and constantly exploring things too. Also, sometimes it feels later on Prof.s actually don't do anything, and their PhD candidates are kinda like indentured slaves and they basically become fund-procurers socializing only, with little or no research... I'm not sure if I wanna be such a hypocritical person taking credit for other's research too. And, not sure if I wanna got back to Software Engineering jobs with boring, stupid client-facing requirements either. I'm a bit lost.
But, thanks for sharing your wisdom with fellow PhD new entrants 🙂

Hi Abhishek, thank you for sharing your story here. A PhD is certainly a huge commitment. Exiting on the 5th year is a pity but not a big deal.
In fact, if you are not targeting an academic career, it could be an advantage. In many cases, having a line that says PhD on the resume confuses many employers. The job market still doesn't know how to fit a PhD in a company because many people believe that PhDs over qualify for a job.
It is common to feel lost, so you are not alone.
Here is what I could suggest:
      (1) explore externally - what are the similar alumni doing after an MS?
      (2) explore internally - what do you do best?
I have made this video to discuss my transitioning thoughts after postdoc, but I think the self-discovery process is similar, so you may enjoy it: th-cam.com/video/Cb8XQPDZGeQ/w-d-xo.html

@@PhDCoffeeTime Thanks, Vera, for your thoughtful reply :)
Actually, in here (India), there aren't many who exit with an MS by Research (yet), and the stigma associated with it kinda means people who do don't really announce and quietly slip away. That way it becomes harder to trace any alumni who have this degree, as opposed to those who've graduated with a PhD. However, I agree that would be best place to find advice. I'll try
Regarding what I'm best at, that's perhaps a tough one. Frankly, I don't really know.. perhaps, because I might've not dabbled enough in areas (with job market) to know where my skills might lie. And, although my interest is towards Visual/Geometric Computing, where I have demonstrated sufficient adeptness might be more menial Web development, in my job before jumping into PhD. Thankfully, now I've better Machine Learning skills which might be a saving grace due to Data science trends now.
I've watched your other video and posted a Like. I was really impressed with your never-ending Scholar profile paper list :D Also, I'm your Subscriber now ✌️ I hope you're better able to decide what u want next. And, hope u find it even in these Covid times.
Are you in any chatting forum by chance e.g. Discord ? I'd like to have a chat if possible sometime :)

      @@abhishek.chakraborty Hi Abhishek,
I could sponsor your participation in the Workshop with Welcome Solution (the company I got my academic training) with the condition that you will put in the time and energy to fully attend it and complete all the homework as required.
It's a very helpful workshop that has helped me, 4hr x 4 weeks, and it actually starts this Thursday (6-10pm CEST, 9pm - 1am Indian time). Given your story, I highly recommend it.

If this is too much time commitment, you could read Natalia's book, it guides you in thinking about what is your most important science skill in the market.
What is out there for me? The landscape of post-PhD career tracks:

Also, if you are open to working outside of India, I know many people who have a science/tech career in Europe/ Canada.

@@PhDCoffeeTime Wow... That's really kind of you. I am touched !
Although you've offered sponsorship so generously, I cannot ask you to do that. I will try to check out Natalia's book later possibly.
I would be open to discuss more freely over a chat about my current scenario, and would be more than willing to help you in any way as well (maybe in Data Science tasks). For that, I've sent an invite to your LinkedIn account.
Thanks again for being so candid :)

Actually I was worried that most of the PhDs don't end up in their dream job. Is it true that welcome solution or the book What Is out There for Me? is it really helpful. I would like to give it a try.

    • @PhDCoffeeTime
      @PhDCoffeeTime  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hi Kothai, I have gained a lot from Natalia's workshop and book, the questions she asked are so valuable to me, and as a result I have become a lot more aware of "what brings happiness to my life", "what kind of career would be the most fulfilling to the way I would like to work with others". She recently has developed the ODYSSEY test, and you could also give it a try along with the book. If you have the budget, her workshop was greatly comprehensive and I highly recommend it.

@@PhDCoffeeTime Hi Vera, I contacted Natalia and found that there is an upcoming workshop (which includes the book and the ODYSSEY test) on July 7th, due to financial reasons I cannot take it but one day I'll try to make it happen. I am hoping to buy the PDF version of the book sooner this month. Thank you Vera.

Thanks for the question! I would recommend this Linkedin group for PhD career networking (www.linkedin.com/groups/8476427/). In fact, I have met many helpful network who has helped me a lot in job prep, I actually have landed a job this month.
I don't have any plan to offer any paid services but I have created a privat discussion group where you are welcome to post any PhD related questions: facebook.com/groups/860570264454111

Hi, Kaxar, I know it's too late, but just in case you are still searching...I personally checked the professors' profiles in each university I wanted to study a PhD at. If I found one whose work and projects aligned with my needs, I would write a direct email to them expressing my interest. Many won't even answer the emails, but some of them might show interest in your ideas. Some of them will ask for a more defined project plan while some might just accept your raw ideas to start.
