People just don't understand. There are chip manufactures in the U.S. like Intel and Texas Instruments but (Taiwanese based) TSMC is the world's absolute bleeding edge in chip manufacturing technology. No other company (expect for a close second like Korean Samsung) compares. The chip manufacturing industry is unlike any other industry and EXTREMELY specialized. And so are the plants where chips are being produced. Is it so incomprehensible that TSMC wants some of their own contractors to have a hand in the over-seas construction of a hundred+ billion Dollar project?

I have seen both Mexican and American construction workers.
The Mexican ones work by the hour. The American ones work by the contract.
The Mexicans work by the contract only if deadline is near. Otherwise you will see three workers show up, shovel a pile of dirt and leave after less than 2 hrs of work. This would continue until a) they collect their pay or b) they complain about not being paid enough or being over worked.
This two tier system is not just the mindset of union workers but the entire American work force.
Now the Americans. They work by the contract. They dig a pile of gravel then fill it up.
Then when it caves in they want another contract. The same pay TWICE for rework of shoddy, less than 2 hrs of work "work".
TSMC is being held back by American "culture".

Just like a merger of an American electrical company with a Japanese company. Japenese company having the majority. They immediately wanted the workers to work for just above minimum wage. Giving the workers to take a wage cut or look elsewhere. Many of the good electrical workers went elsewhere immediately without a notice.

Worker's wage compare to the cost of the site, equipment, and time to market is really nothing. That's not the point. Timing is the key and if local workers can't handle important tasks, due to having served other lukewarm companies for years and not able to adapt to successful company's workflow, just let them send experienced experts from Taiwan to unblock. Local workers can still do lower end work. After all, this is America. You get paid fairly for what you actually contributed.

TSMC is actually forced by the US goverment, you guys needs to know the operation cost in the US is twice than that in Taiwan. Leaving Taiwan, the benefit of low cost will be gone. What TSMC really wants to do is 'escape' from the US.

I guarantee the fab being built in Japan will be built far faster than in Arizona.

If he saw a lax area he talk to the forman to see if there was a problem. If it was material he make the calls etc. But if it was people it was area formans job. If the forman still allowed it to continue he tell the foreman they didn't need him anymore along with the workers. My husband was good at his job. There is a reason that America's manufacturing isn't competitive on world market. To demand any wage level and sustain it, American workers need to prove that their value creation in the final products will be more than those "cheap" labor. If everyone can do everything you do for a better price, you just demand more because you are "American"? Just ask American consumers if they want to pay much more to support their American compatriots. Better still, ask these American workers if they go out shopping for much more expensive American made products for their own consumption. tsmc never wanted to build this fab in the US in the first place. tsmc was forced to come here by US politicians. Why not just let tsmc go back to manufacture in Taiwan, and we just by imported chips? American workers demand more because America's cost of living is higher. American workers need to work on products/services that are of much higher value creation, like design. Chip manufacturing isn't going to sustain.

You should place the blame on the American governments. The US strategy was always outsourcing manufacturing outside of the US. So blaming TSMC is kinda stupid. If TSMC wasn’t forced by the US to keep the chip making going, they wouldn’t ever dreamed of setting up a chip making plant in Arizona. The only reason why the American government want TSMC in the US is to secure semiconductors away from China and to have supplies of chips for most of the high US tech firms.

    • @blackdan0259

"The US strategy was always outsourcing manufacturing" How US gov is to blame? In a scenario where USA build your own chip, you still lose with Taiwanese and Korean and Chinese chip company because with the way USA labor whine, they can't do the job! If by any chance they can do the job, it will cost 5-10x more than asian chip! Do you think most business are patriotic and buy the chip that does the same thing for 10x more ? Just think with your brain rather than being a beta always look for someone to blame! You American can't because you ask premium price! It is what it is!
