Welcome aboard Mate 👍 Yeah, it’s pretty awesome, the longer tiller is great too. Just serviced that motor, thinking maybe of selling if I can bring myself to 😂 Cheers 🍻 Aussie Boat Guy 😎
Really like your experiments and work, especially the small engine stuff. I found your channel while searching for power-tilt conversions, as I have a project that requires a 15-20HP, 4-stroke electric start with forward controls. Not much around second-hand that has power-tilt as well. Maybe a visit to the wreckers is in order! Cheers.
Thanks so much mate, I really appreciate your encouragement 😊 Yeah, it’s hard to sort out trim and tilt if the motor doesn’t share the same bracket as a trim tilt version. Always a way around it of course 😂 All the best, Aussie Boat Guy 😎
Cheers mate. Yeah electric start is awesome 😎 Done that to mine now too. You reminded me about the long tiller video, I had actually forgotten. Thought I lost it and could not find the footage. After searching, it’s on my phone, edited and ready to post. Will try to get it up tomorrow. Cheers.
Thinking about doing something similar blew the original motor mounts out. Having trouble removing the leg from the steering bracket and the service manual is not much help. Any advice for removing the studs/ lower motor mounts would be greatly appreciated.
Hi Champion, Yeah, they can be stubborn. From memory, there are retainer plates and the mounts slide into the trunk (leg). You will not be able to remove the complete clamp bracket from the leg without removing the shift rod (gear selector rod). This can be done by removing the carburetor and taking it upwards with some manipulation. Cheers 🍻 Aussie Boat Guy 😎
Cheers mate, really appreciate it. I did it to a 18hp as well. Check out my other vids I added trim tilt to a 15hp Mercury super which is the same as the 18hp tohatsu. Can’t get enough, I love it. Cheers
Hi mate Great videos I have just got my first boat and it has a 25hp Honda just wondering if u could point me in the right direction on where I could get my hands on a trim and tilt like this ? Cheers
Hey mate, I would just ring around all the outboard wreckers. Also keep an eye out for any non running motors for sale. If I’m after a part I often put an add up saying wanted part etc. Cheers and enjoy being on the water mate.
Love the videos mate.Do you have any idea how I can add tilt/trim to my forward steer yamaha 30 hp cv and roughly how much it would cost if possible? Any help appreciated.Keep up the great work.
Hi mate, The best way would by to add a CMC pre-made trim-tilt unit. Think they are about $1400.00. Adding Custom trim thd way I did my motor would be extremely expensive if you had to pay someone to do it. Maybe the cheapest way would be sell your motor and but one with trim tilt. Cheers 🍻
@@25hpboatracerman Thanks mate.My thoughts too.I looked into the cmc and panthers ages ago and thought even they were very expensive I'll keep her as she is until I decide if I can justify buying a 40hp brand spanker.8k buys alot of fuel.😂
Hi Mate, Yes I did, it’s two part primer followed by two part gloss paint, finish is actually better than new factory and used reproduction decals. Cheers 🍻 Aussie Boat Guy 😎
@@yahnpavlovic9626 Hi Mate, It’s Two part paint, you need to mix two parts and use a spray gun. The finish from a can is not as good and also the paint from a can is not as hard wearing and can be affected by fuel or oils Cheers 🍻 Aussie Boat Guy
Hey mate, I have a video on this exact question, search tohatsu 18hp comparison. Here is the answer as well. The 18hp tohatsu two stroke is actually a stand alone power head. It is visually the same as the 9.9hp and 15hp power head but has a larger bore and bigger ports and the 18hp has a bigger carburetor. Same crank, seals, reeds, exhaust cover etc. the only way to tell a 18 block from the 9.9 and 15 Block is it has 60 stamped on the port side of the block (60mm bore) and the 9.9 and 15 have a 55 stamped (55mm bore) Cheers,
@@25hpboatracerman Thanks for the info. I got a 18HP and it runs crazy good. Pushes my 16ft Jon boat up to about 25 miles per hour with one guy and about 22 miles per hour with two guys and gear.
Hey mate from BC Canada! Eh I got a 25 merc sea pro same as in the vid I up rated to 30hp via changing intake gasket and setting timing to 25* is there Anything else a guy can to for more power? Have herd the exhaust tube is different on the 30? Any help would be much appreciated! Love this channel!!! Cheers!
Hi mate. Well done on a great motor, they are awesome. The exhaust tube is the same in the 25 and 30hp version, looks like you already got the extra 5hp. We have shaved the head on them in the past to make more compression (around 170psi) this have us better torque by a fair bit but didn’t notice top end speed increase. We have also played with raising the exhaust port which changes the power band to a higher rpm and results in better top speed. Keep in mind it’s very easy to loose speed if the slightest thing is wrong with the porting. If your motor is on a light boat I would play with props and engine height over trying to mod the motor as they are pretty dialed in already. If it was a 30hp Yamaha 3 cylinder then you can get a fair amount more power out of them but the tohatsu built 30 (Mercury) is a great motor. Hope this helps
Yep tried it out on the fish nipper, was a rough day. The hull coped well with the 30hp. I didn’t gps the top speed but would have been very close to 63kph. Cheers mate.
Hi Mate, I’m in NSW Australia. unfortunately as you saw it’s a very custom unit and I am not planning on doing any more, the labour and parts are worth more than the outboard sadly. You could look up the CMC trim units, they are off the shelf. My trim - tilt setup will go with my motor when I finally sell it. Cheers 🍻 Aussie Boat Guy 😎
All good mate. Did you do the whole thing with a 9 inch grinder. Shaping and all. And also the grease nipple. Did you line it up with the existing hole on the internal barrel. Might have a crack at this. Cheers
Hi Champ, Nine inch, five inch and 4 inch, die grinders, flap discs etc. Yep, the nipple feeds the correct area and also tapped the steering friction screw in the correct spot. The steering stops are important as well. I reckon there is enough to follow along with in the vid to replicate the unit. Keep me posted. Cheers 🍻 Aussie Boat Guy 😎
Correct. Unless the Honda clamp assembly has a kick up function, which I don’t think it does. Actually don’t think any of the small motors with trim tilt have a kick up function. Anyway, where I use the motor is open waters not rivers or shallows. Also plenty of those 25 - 30hp Honda’s floating around with trim tilt still going well so fingers crossed I don’t hit anything.
I can understand that. I think maybe the top pin is designed to shear maybe ? Could always mount a kick up plate. Enjoyed your videos on this merc, it’s the type of thing I would I do ! Appreciate the content !
Cheers mate, Did some more research, looks like it does have some sort of internal release if you hit a submerged object but I’m assuming things will break regardless. Glad I don’t run skinny water 😬
Yep, just know it will take a lot of effort and time and I don’t regret one second of it. Whenever I trim the motor underway I smile from ear to ear . Try and find a trim unit that will suit your size and shape then mod to fit your motor. Cheers 🍻 Aussie Boat Guy 😎
Man that's sick! Been wanting to put a trim on my 30merc but no luck with local mercury dealer, have looked on ebay but from watching your vid, seems to be abit more to it than I thought. Interested if you live in qld, I'd pay you for one on it for me
Cheers mate 👍 yeah, I love it. Definitely a lot of work and I just did it because i love that sort of one off stuff. The parts and labour would end up costing a small fortune unfortunately.
