    A trick I was taught years ago with a pile of bagged parts and an illustrated parts diagram. With the parts list to confirm against, number the bags to match the illustration. That saves time having to cross reference the part number to diagram number when your hands are all greasy and dirty. Now you have fathers day free tomorrow, I hope you have a great day Stu.

    • @DangarMarine
      @DangarMarine  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a good strategy Ron, great for checking your order as well as prepping you to do the install. Hope you are having a nice relaxing Father's day too!

    Sometimes we need an extra hand or two to hold one thing to manipulate another thing. What a puzzle that locking mechanism was. Stupendous install Stu. Thanks for your effort Mate !!!.

    My old Johnson outboard (1964) has a very similar mechanism but the lock out is a tab at the front motor mount (inside). Pretty clever system.

    Great vid, Stu. My old 7.5 Merc outboard has had a wonky tilt/troll mechanism for some time and the thought of trying to make heads or tails of all those fiddly bits n pieces has had me procrastinating on a fix. Your detailed explanation has given me a bit of courage to dig in. My system is slightly different in that the actuator handle is accessed on the front of the motor between and above the transom clamps. I'm willing to bet though that most of the moving bits further down are very similar. Right off I see my issue may be that nylon bushing up inside has perhaps just worn out, sending everything out of alignment a bit and preventing smooth rotation. Thanks again!

    • @DangarMarine
      @DangarMarine  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks mate, good luck with getting yours sorted. As you say, the lever may be different but they basic job they do is the same and often different manufacturers will come up with very similar ways to achieve it.

    I sure got quite the surprise one day when I was using someone's boat and needed to back up a bit. Not very funny as it's happening, but it's funny now, especially when seeing someone else going through the same experience. Thanks for the insight into the replacement of such an overlooked component. Great to know that Marine Engine dot com has such good quality diagrams to help identify the correct parts, and help people figure out the orientation of such parts when trying to install them. Spring must be upon you finally. How was your winter? We had one of the coolest (and somewhat wet) summers I can remember in years. Cheers from Ontario, Canada.

      I am about 50kms south and west of Stu. For us it has been a pretty dry but cold winter- which is normal. We tend to have dry winters and wetter summers, with spring being the wet season.

    I have one of these on my Evinrude 48 SPL. It uses a gas charged hydraulic cylinder (like a big shock absorber ) It no longer seems to have a sufficient gas charge within. It doesn't provide the "assist" like it's supposed to. I bought a used one on eBay, I heard they corrode at the pin and can be a pain to remove. I guess I'll be breaking out the oxy acetylene rig! Lots of parts on this one Stu. I hope you had a well deserved beer after this job!

    • @DangarMarine
      @DangarMarine  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jack. We've had a few of those style through on Yamahas too. It's a clever idea, but as you say, once they lose their charge they don't do anything. Time to get the big red wrench out again! ;)

    Hey Stu - thanks so much for your videos. I fitted my 30Tohatsu including new tilt tube and steering all off the videos you have shared. Much appreciated !
    I was wondering - for trailering a motor like this, would resting on the 'shallow running' stand be ok? I.e. would the motor be at risk of bouncing up and coming off that stand, dropping the motor towards the road suddenly? Or, with the stand, is it locked and secure?

    I have the newer version of this motor and i has almost the same exact bracket etc. My question is: When you put the motor in forward gear it should release the locking mechanism automatically? This would prevent the motor from breaking if you hit something like a log or underwater obstacle. When you put it in reverse the mechanism should automatically lock the motor so it doesn't shoot up when going in reverse? Mine doesn't do this when shifting. The only way for me to unlock / lock the motor is to it manually using that lever in your video. This doesn't seem right to me. If someone new was driving the boat and they forget to unlock or lock the motor then bad things could happen.

    Great video. Not the most exciting one you have made. But its still a pretty common fault on "older" motors.

    • @DangarMarine
      @DangarMarine  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks mate. It is true that videos on specific models / jobs are a bit dull if you don't need to do the job yourself, I much prefer general interest ones. Yes, certainly seen plenty of tilts where you need to reach in and grab the stand directly. Hurts when they bite!

  • @sideburns999
    @sideburns999 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thanks, great video! When we tilt down the engine, the stand is not entering / locking in to the upper grooves/tilt positions, and when i move the stand back and forth by hand, there is some friction and I suspect it does not move as freely as it should. I have been looking for a grease nipple to lube the stand, but to no avail. Would it make sense to remove the stand to lube the axle/bushing or should I take a closer look at the springs etc?

    Hey Stu, awesome video and exactly what I was looking for. I have a 30hp Tohatsu and it' basically new, its been having the problem of locking down even when I release the lock I need to give the underside a push to get it moving. Any idea of what I need to tweak/change so that it works nice and smooth again? (None of the pieces look bent and it's all nice and shiny) Thanks, Ross.

    • @DangarMarine
      @DangarMarine  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is often really hard to tell why it isn't moving without a helping hand unfortunately. Lubricating the pivot points is normally what I do, but sometimes I think it is such a minor problem that it is very hard to tell what is causing it.

    Question from a novice, how do you know what is the best setting for the outboard to be angled at when deep running?. I noticed the main stopping bar was set at the outer most hole away from the stern of the boat.

    • @DangarMarine
      @DangarMarine  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It mostly has to do with how the hull rides in the water. You don't want the bow bouncing up and down (called porpoising), and this happens when it is trimmed to high. By the same token you don't want the bow digging into the water if it is trimmed to far down. If it is trimmed to high you may also hear the prop sucking air in.

    Mercury makes parts very cheaply made now day's compared to what they did in the 60's and 70's. It is a shame but they are not the only one all the other manufactures of outboards followed suit...

      Only because everyone only wants to buy the cheapest part they can get to do the job for now.
