    There is no stopping D'Angelo on this! But give Clapton a break, guys - he did a pretty damn amazing job himself. His falsetto was exact, and wasn't supposed to be powerful like D'Angelo's on this.

Because he realizes its a tribute to Curtis Mayfield. Not a competition. Clapton isn't really a singer like that. Well done by both. Never saw it before.

    It’s Perfect. Not sure why others are so negative on Clapton. This isn’t The Voice. The aim for a singer, regardless of range or ability, is to convey expression, emotion, or even vulnerability. Clapton holds his end down. D’angelo has a wide range. Together It works.

    Clapton is one of the most legendary guitarists of all time, hands down. All honor and respect due.
    But damn does D'Angelo makes him look bad vocally here. And it's not like D'Angelo is trying to do that.
    He's holding back, if anything.

    • @modifiedcontent
      @modifiedcontent 8 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      +morpheusxnyc - Eric Clapton was never a singer originally - Jack Bruce was the lead singer in Cream etc. I am surprised he is keeping up as well as he does.

      +morpheusxnyc If i recall correctly, Eric Clapton never wanted to be a singer but he always had a really rather normal cozy voice that attracted a lot of fans.

      @morpheusxnyc 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      modifiedcontent I know, though he did sing on a lot of Cream songs. Again, I don't mean to kick sand in the legend's face or anything.
      I'm now learning how to play the electric guitar based almost purely on inspiration by him, so trust that I'm not some hater.
      But the vocal contrast in this video is pretty stark. That's all I'm saying...

      ***** Hey, look. Clapton is my guitar hero. I play "Sunshine of Your Love" almost daily on my Fender strat as a warm up, so you're not talking to someone who doesn't love, honor and fully appreciate Slowhand.
      But if I'm being honest, he sound like Herbert the Pervert from Family Guy compared to D'Angelo, who as I said, is holding back.

    Sure, D'Angelo is the singer here. But no matter how good he is, Erics voice sounds pretty good, (as a singer, he is somewhat underestimated, I think) and together they sound great. And remember, it's not about competition, it's about how musical you sound. So Clapton is not put to shame here at all, on the contrary, he's right up there, with D'Angelo. Who would have thought this unlikely combination would sound that good?

    • @msrubie11
      @msrubie11 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +Ulbo de Sitter No he is not. I like Eric and I am sure he will be the first to say, this was not his best. The great Curtis Mayfield and the Impressions are cut from a different cloth. 60's Harmony with a Gospel background from Sam Cooke, Jerry Butler and Curtis Mayfield who made up the Gospel Group the Soul Stirrers. D' Angelo also come from the same Gospel background. This tune was done in that vein as it is an oldie. Eric does not have the background or the vocals for this. So no he is not up there with D'Angelo, who held back for him. But there is definitely no shame in getting together to honor a legend like Curtis Mayfield singing this great tune! Eric always honors the greats whose music he has borrowed from.

    • @RayasNegroOvejas
      @RayasNegroOvejas 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +msrubie11 You're dismissing a large part of Clapton's career, since he's played the blues most of it - which isn't his background.

    • @msrubie11
      @msrubie11 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      PJ
      Actually I am not. The Blues existed and flourished long before Eric, Mick and the Beatles attempted to copy the sound in England. For one thing the vocals of those Black Artists created Gospel, out of that came the Blues straight out of the Cotton Fields, out of that came R&B and Rock & Roll, out of that Jazz. All other popular music is just a replication of the originals.
      I like Eric Clapton and think he is talented as well as respectful of what he has borrowed and grew rich from. Many are not. But make no mistake about it. He was out of his vocal abilities on this song. Blues come from a life of Black pain that Eric and no white musicians could never share with us. That pain is in the music we sing.
      The vocal talent of Black musicians male and female have been ingrained from birth.There are Blacks who have never sung professionally who are parents of the Black Superstars you see in music today. D'angelo came out of the Black church. His parents musically abilities was passed down from those Cotton Fields.
      I exclude Hip Hop, but REAL BLACK MUSIC, is something Eric and other white musicians don't have the ability to replicate in it's original form, they don't share the history or the genetics. Every Blue Moon you get a Tina Marie, but that is every Blue Moon. I don't see that disrespecting Eric, I see it as telling a truth that I don't think he would disagree with.

    • @RayasNegroOvejas
      @RayasNegroOvejas 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      msrubie11 I don't know what you're saying. I said that blues isn't Clapton's background. (And I think he would agree that the Impressions sing it better, but I also think D'Angelo would say Curtis sing better.) I know the background of the blues, and everyone knows it doesn't come from England which is what you seem to think I think. House, funk, hip hop... is "real" black music too. I don't see a need on bashing on hip hop in this instance. How do you draw the line on what's "real" and what white musicians can't replicate? Does this extend beyond the vocals, to instruments? Is it "real black music" if the artist is black but not have that background?
      He may have been out of his vocal abilities on this song, but I still really like it.

SO MUCH SOUL, so effortless too and not oversung. should've just let D' sing the whole darn thing (no offense to clapton the legend).

    Wow, two years ago I posted a reaction to this fantastic tribute, and it evoked a pretty interesting discussion about the blackness/whiteness of music. Let's dwell on this subject a little more... I really don't know wether a white person can or cannot play black music as well or emotionally intense and meaningful as a black person. My first thought would be that it isn't a question of being black or white, but a question of musicianship. Being black or being white: not important. But having said that, if your culture produced a certain kind of music with its own unique means of expression (blues, flamenco, gipsy jazz) it would seem to me that if you are a member of that particular culture and the music of that culture that has been there for generations is passed on to you, that would certainly mean that you have a deeper understanding (intellectually, emotionally) of that music. It might even be there on a genetic level, and therefore you are probably a better performer of that music.
    But that would mean that Jessye Norman would not be as great an opera singer as Schwarzkopf or Maria Callas. European classical music: can it get any whiter? But we all know that Jessye belongs right up there, together with all the other star singers. And can you tell, just by listening, a black opera singer from a white one? No, you can't....
    And about D'Angelo and Clapton: everybody knows that D'Angelo outsings Eric. And that's because he is an amazing vocalist, not because he is an amazing bláck vocalist. But that's totally beside the point I wanted to make. I just wanted to say that Eric, not having half the power or souplesse that D'Angelo has, has his own sound and colour that mixes remarkably well with D'Angelo's.

    • @Padybu
      @Padybu  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree, I think the combination of these two voices make for a very natural and heart warming listen. I personally don't think that if you're not from the, for lack of a more suitable word 'race', which a genre of music originated from then you won't intellectually or emotionally understand it as much as someone who is closley related to said 'race'. I'm Irish and I'd find it obnoxious and nationalistic if said that anyone who doesn't have Irish heritage can't understand Irish music, poetry, dance or any other artform, be that on a macro or micro level. It's universal and obviously so for those of us who don't view the human species as subdivided by race, we can all learn from eachother.

    Eric Clapton should have stuck to only playing the guitar for this performance, or maybe just singing a little at the beginning. D'angelo makes him look like an ameteur vocally
