  • AFL Hall of Fame legend Bernie Quinlan started riding his bike with three mates in Black Rock, Victoria (Australia) in 1984. That weekly Saturday morning ride - which Bernie originally started in order to manage an Achilles injury - became known as The Hell Ride. Australia's biggest and fastest bunch ride.
Bernie explains the history of The Hell Ride in this video. How it started; how it grew; and how it prolonged his AFL career. Additionally, I explain post the interview what has occurred with The Hell Ride documentary Bike Chaser was looking to create, and future Hell Ride content on this channel.
Thanks to Bernie Quinlan for speaking with me. He's not only an AFL legend, he's a legend of a bloke!

Peter McGeorge was the same man that got me into cycling after a massive leg injury playing basketball when i was 18 in roughly 1995. He was a great friend of my dads and lived in the next street from us in Black Rock. He got me into cycling for my rehab, convinced me to give up basketball bc he thought i had potential in cycling, which then in turn turned into a professional cycling career over the next decade and i cant thank him enough for it. I think it was our second ride together he made do the hell ride and from then on i fell in love with the sport. He was one of the most generous hard working men i have met in my life and a true inspiration of what a good human should be.. Sad he is gone but his legend lives on
If you go forward with the documentary i have a lot of stories and also photos from the sprint finish from the 90's as my dad owned one of the shops at the finish line and would take pictures every few weeks as we came in. Feel free to hit me up if you need any of this stuff.

That’s awesome! I’d love to see them one day. I have this project as a must do, but not for a few years I think. I’ll come back to you when the time is right.

I remember doing the hellride in the 90's, I also remember being in a massive crash at the sprint at the end of the ride in 94 when the surface was like a cheese grater.

Thanks for the comment Mossy. So the surface of the road caused the crash? I've also seen a few there in Black Rock towards the finish, but it wasn't caused by the surface!

The crash was caused by a touch of wheels I think , with the surface being so coarse though it just ripped my skin apart so I ended up in the alfred for a few hours so they could get all the gravel out of my skin.

Great vid mate. Looking forward to the Hell Ride footage. Even vids on other Melbourne rides (Dandenongs, Kinglake, Bright, etc) would be pretty interesting I reckon.

All the elements of a "safe" hell ride are there! Experienced, focussed athletes. One of the best roads anywhere. Cops on motorbikes. (Some pedalling as well). What's needed is an advertised, police escort! With cops riding ahead to pedestrian crossings, lights etc + shutting down intersections to ENABLE the Hell Ride!
In fact! The TV stations (SBS?) ought to cover it - weekly!
    Camera Bikes?

Agreed. They are happy to close off roads to allow pedestrians to get to the G....so don't see why they wouldn't do similar for an iconic even in Melbourne that encourages fitness.

Cam if you are interested I would be super happy to give you any help you want or need in regards to film making. I make mini docs so I think I'd be able to give you plenty of advice. Let me know and we can find a way to get in touch.

    • @CamNicholls

Interesting Marek. And really appreciate the offer. We were actually working with a documentary maker for the full Hell Ride docu we were trying to get funding for. He's a senior lecturer for film and tv at Swinburn. Jeff Bird is his name. He helped us put together a comprehensive treatment, which we took to the TAC and others. While we didn't get funding for the docu, as you know, Jeff exposed us to the complexities and time required to make a top-shelf docu. So in addition to the expertise that the funding was going to provide, time availability is also another massive factor for me (between now and moving at the end of the year). However, if you're Melbourne based we should catch up. There might be other stuff we could explore. Email me on cameron@bikechaser.com.au
