ive always been a good trumpet player, but i just joined jazz band with braces. i feel like i can’t even play anymore. its so hard. it doesn’t sound the same. i just wish i could play like i used to. i am playing with some really good musicians and i’m feeling like a beginner again. :(
Same. I'm not necessarily in Jazz band, but I went from being the first chair trumpet of the highschool to barely being able get out easy notes. I sound like a beginner now.
I'm sorry to hear that. I hope it's going better for you now - remember to keep your head up, fundamentals in check, and think about how much better of a player and musician you'll be after this is all over. You got this!
i feel the exact same way. i just got braces just a couple weeks ago and started to play more after my teeth stopped hurting as much. now that band camp is starting soon ive been trying to play more but now im feeling like im back at beginner level again.
I'm the main trumpet player in my city orchestra and got braces few days ago and the other day I tried playing and couldn't play almost anything and I just packed my trumpet and stormed out of hall and was litteraly so deppressed and angry and was litterarly hopeless that I won't be able to play it as long as I got braces. This video brought me hope in playing again and made me happier. Thanks for the tips and advives🙂
Im glad you made this! I wish this existed long ago when I had braces in high school. I was always told to put wax on the braces to avoid cutting the lips but I found it really annoying and it really didn’t help at all. Great video! Keep it up!
I heard about the wax but never tried it. From what I heard, it might have made it even harder to play because it's adding even more of an intent on your teeth. You just really gotta learn to play with the least amount of pressure possible. Appreciate the comment!
I was going to start using wax but the amount of time it would take to put and take off the wax on all of my braces was a turn off for me. It would've taken way too much time because I only have 4 minutes to go to my locker, then the bathroom to put on the wax, and then to band, and I surely wouldn't have enough time to do that.
I just got braces and I’m in 8th high school tryouts are in around 3 to 4 months and I lost a full octave and a half so far but I may improve just playing a c on the staff is out of tune
Hi, I'm sorry to hear about the lost progress. I would make sure to take your practice sessions slow. Be consistent but be sure not to overwork yourself. Range is unfortunately one of the biggest things impacted by braces, focus on getting a solid sound before hammering away at range exercises. If the braces remain to have a severe impact on your playing by the auditions, feel free to let the judges know that you simply have braces and are temporally limited because of it. There is no shame in that. I wish you the best and let me know if you have any other questions about braces or trumpet.
Very nice video! I remember when I had braces. I actually started playing trumpet with them in the 6th grade. I didn't get them off until two years ago my sophomore year of high school. They did hurt, but they made me play with less pressure.
This video is so helpful! I'm in jazz band at my school, and as the only first trumpet, I really need to get the notes out. I will most likely get my braces on next year, so I'll save this video until then!
Years ago, I got braces when I was about 13. I would put a strip of paper across the braces -- and, thus between the braces and the inner lip. It cushioned the sharp edges of the braces. When I would play the Sousaphone, I did not need to use the paper strip.
I am about to get braces so thank for the advice because I really do like the trumpet and don’t want to quit because of something that is going to help me out
Thanks for the advice bro- saw you at dublin brass week quite a while ago learning with allen vizzuti- great tips and hopefully my playings gonna get somewhat ok since getting braces
so, i messed up big time. i got my braces march 22nd. im writing this on june 19th. i struggled so hard to play with braces that i even decided that it would be easier to switch to baritone, where i wouldnt have to firm up so much for higher notes. now, the school years over, and i have so much pressure on myself to improve on the baritone, and what makes it worse is now that im in the low brass for sectionals, etc, is that 1, i cant read bass clef yet, 2, its gonna be really awkward because i just had a breakup with someone in that section, and 3, i genuinely have the worst anxiety so if they ask me to play alone, im gonna have a panic attack at the least. now seeing it, i want to stay in the trumpet section, and now im trying really hard to relearn how to play with braces, and now i can barely make a sound out of the trumpet mouthpiece since ive been using a baritone mouthpiece for the past couple of months. i dont know what to do, man, where to go from here, what instrument to play... :'[
I remember being in Summer being trumpet 1 for everything but getting braces during the winter was so frustrating and i changed to always player part 2 and although i could reach high notes it was hard to jump
Thank you so much for this! The other day I went to practice while on pain meds and I saw that braces have really messed my playing up! And I get frustrated very easily but this has helped me so much! You are the best!
Bro I was JUST getting good and now it’s back to square one 💀 Edit: after you get used to them and you’re not really being stabbed in the lips anymore, it’s actually not that bad. Sometimes you’ll make a weird fart noise but it’s fine
I would consider myself to be a pretty decent trumpet player. (i've always been first chair, i've always been praised for my talents, and being a musician is one of the most valuable parts of my life) But, I'm getting braces soon. I'm scared that my tone quality and range will be severely negatively impacted. I was wondering, from your experience, was your tone quality ever as good with braces as it was without braces? Also, how long did it take for you to be able to get your range back to normal with braces? Thanks!
Yea bro I was first chair literally just got my braces yesterday and I lost a whole octave and my b flats sound airy I can barley play c but that could just be because I need to give it a week
Bruh i learned trumpet with braces for like 8 plus mounths and i started trumpet with braces i thought it was just me I always cut my lips trying to play high notes
I have braces but I can't keep my chin up which affects my tone. The reason for this is because it puts pressure on my bottom lips which tends to hurt me if I play with my chin up. If you can relate or have a solution then please don't hesitate to leave it in the replies.
It sounds crazy but I’m the only trumpet that could play high notes in my group and the rest of them depend on me, I tried to switch but some of the band was against it, what do I do?
I recently got braces, and I found that if I wrapped my lips over my braces so they are pressing, then moved my lips up relative to my teeth then I can play just as well as before. Is this bad to do? Should I continue doing this or stop?
i just got my top braces and i find it hard to even tongue my notes now... i use to be able to triple tongue pretty decently but now its full of airy sounds.. any tips?
I literally quit because I got them last year in quarantine and was too embarrassed to do it in front of everyone… because of quarantine the teacher couldn’t help me as normal when you get them and now I can barley play the scales… I used to be the best in my class! :( I’m going to rejoin in high school but I’m still so scared and I’m going to practice soOOoO much to get back to at least eighth grade level… I can’t even play one scale well yet so I guess I’ll be doing three years of school in one 😟
So one of my big questions is that I have to play everyday at school and I don't really have a choice so is there another way that I can play without a break
It really depends on how severely the braces are needed. I had a tooth that decided to grow sideways for no reason...so the braces were, unfortunately, a must. Otherwise, it's all just a matter of how perfect you want your teeth to look and how much you value the time that you'd lose with braces. If my dentist wanted me to get braces for cosmetic imperfections, I probably would've denied in hindsight. I only got braces because I had no other choice; I would've been fine living with some minor dental imperfections if that meant I wouldn't have to get braces. Also, I was told that the braces would only be on for 6 months and it ended up taking 3x that.
I just have a quick question. I've had braces on for over 2 years and will be getting them off soon. I am a sophomore and have been first chair, causing scarring on the inside of my lips. I just want to know if that will effect my playing in any way once my braces come off, and if so, what ways will it be effected.

Me, horn/trumpet player watching in 7th grade before braces: ok great it won’t last forever
Four years later with 18 more months: 💀 make it stop
I actually never lost playing ability when I got braces which was a blessing
Im going to get mine rn😬
That's awesome! Braces hit everyone differently, but I'm glad they didn't impact you much.
Hope it went well!
