I love the part when the brother, who is a obviously not the smoothest dude, fighting through his fear to stand up for his brother. It is a quick.and touching moment
@samsbro1952 - as a bald fat middle aged man, this uplifted me today as it did back in 1997. My favorite part is when he has the tape that is trying to teach him to be more manly.
This was undoubtedly a creative, humorous way to honor and support Howard and his position. It is almost like deliberately shaving one's head to support a loved one with cancer or another medical condition causing hair loss.
Only Bob Newhart could deliver line, "But you're his brother.... as you know". I don't know why but I've seen this movie 100 times and that one line always gets me.
The deadpan humor and stammering delivery is Bob Newhart's whole schtick. He uses it in literally every single tv show and movie he's done in the last 60 plus years.
they knew that he was going to be TotY and everyone knew he loved Babs, so I'm guessing that's why they had that song ready - at least that's my headcanon :)

It's a joke, because the teachers acted as if one person being gay would somehow spread the gayness to other people. So she acted like she wasn't gay, but caught it from him. Kind of like you could catch a cold or something. she was pointing out how ridiculous the teachers were being.
No he's not gay, but, Mr. Brackett was a very influential teacher on him (and most of the students), he helped him get his grades up and helped him apply for college. He said it out of support for him.
This movie was almost great, but then blew it at the last second. The plot of the film is Kline, a high school drama teacher who isn't gay, is "outed" on a nationally televised awards show by a former student who became a famous actor. Hilarity ensues as Kline, who is engaged to marry his longtime girlfriend, deals with the consequences of everyone thinking he's gay. Then, on the cusp of making a great point - that it doesn't matter if he's gay or straight - the script has him announce that yes, indeed, he is in fact gay. Total cop out. The point would have been much more powerful had he NOT been gay, and then all the people who were shocked and appalled (or, conversely, giddy at the prospect of getting him to admit it) must confront that he's the same respected teacher and pillar of the community either way. Instead we get several minutes of virtue signaling, scolding, and holier-than-thou lectures. The ending, which could have been profound, instead lands with a resounding "CLANG! Thud."
Personally I think that would have been the safe, predictable, Disney way to end the film, by having him turn out to be straight. It's more edgy this way because being gay was still very controversial in the 90s.
@@darreylhenderson702 It was a plot twist that was totally out of left field, not consistent with the character or the story up to that point. THAT was the cop out.
Moms For Liberty could learn something from this film
Yep
Such an incredibly powerful scene. As a gay man, it was so fucking uplifting.

@@KevinMuller5 Well, He isn't smart but he is Howard's brother from so long. The very proud Howard's brother.
Much better than be the perfect genius

“I KNOW YOU’RE NOT YOU’RE A……A TRAMP!”
I can’t tell you how hard the theater laughed when she said that.
Had someone in real life actually called a student out (no pun intended) for being a tramp, they can expect a Major League defamation lawsuit!!
Kevin is so adorable in this movie! This movie made me a fan of his.
I’ve had a lifelong crush on Kevin Kline, you have good taste! Have you seen Soapdish? It’s my fave
Me too. BTW my sister's best friend, her twin brother and there mom appear in the crowd scene at the Oscars
-I'm a parent. I've lived in this town all my life. I'm Howard's father and I'm gay.
-I'm Howard's mother and I'm gay.

They were lying.
@@sha11235 duh! That's not the point of them all saying they are gay.

Yeah I'm a member of this community and I don't mind Howard's gay but you're his brother as you know one of my favorite parts.
It was very brave of Newhart to take that role. He did a great job with it.
Great movie one of the best I've ever been in.We all stood up in balcony and announced we're all gay! Shit was funny
Drew, you fucked up your scene 3 times. Cost us thousands in production. Let’s not brag about it
One of my very favorite movies of all time!!❤️❤️❤️
for some reason i was hoping Howard(Kevin Kline)and Peter(Tom Selleck)would eventually end up together in this movie
I think it is implied at the end.
ME TOO-
I THOUGHT THEY WERE GONNA GET MARRIED AT THE END AND I FANGIRLED-
Same.
They do. Peter's not at Howard's parents' second wedding at the end to report on it.
@paulastiles5507, but, Peter is at the reception party dancing with everybody. 🤔
😂 The orchestra playing Streisand
Kline and Cusack are great but Newhert was awesome too. His awkward uncomfortable nature was hilarious throughout the film

😅Quality of vidéo is poor, But The Moment is GIGANTIC. ❤
my favorite part
I love this movie and I'm gay!
Kevin Kline winning his second oscar!
That’s his actual Oscar that Howard receives.
It IS a great scene.
I love this movie and especially love this scene. I LOL’d when the band broke into People
Bob Newhart was a high school principal?
iam Spartacus oops wrong movie😉
We should send copies of this movie to Ron DeSantis and the GOP in Florida....
Joan Cusack looked great in the wedding dress 👰🏼♀️

What does “Stirgo” mean @ 3:30? Was that supposed to be Michael’s last name?
I was in this movie up in balcony I'm one of the first to stand in maroon dress white cardigan
Bless you Blazing Saddles❤ I'm gay!
Shame they don’t make gay movies like this
Its not really a gay movie. It's not Brokeback Mountain. Its just about someone who comes to the realization that he's gay.
Wilford Brimley's death brought me here.
Same, my mom refused to watch The Thing, so we watched this film instead.
He deserves that Oscar
I kinda thought Jack was gay half way through so am I right or wrong
charlie smith Do you think that Jack is gay?
Neo-Xgray87 ye because of how through the film quick scenes of jack
I'm also a teacher and I'm gay!
Wow... my husband had a gay brother who passed away from AIDS in 1995, so maybe his family and my family must all be gay. LOL!
They made him resign/fired him, for being gay... lol, YOU COULD NOT make this movie today. lol OH man... Oh man... What a product of it's time.
Myk McGrane Actually it still happens all the time :(
SUPREME COURT BABY SAID FUCK THAT NOISE! Jobs for all gays!!!!!
You spoke too soon. Now (5 years after you made this comment) it is, in fact, illegal to say "gay" in Florida schools.

Yeah, like he'd give his Oscar away.
Well, it did belong to Kevin Kline!
Ving Rhames gave his Golden Globe to Jack Lemmon once. During the ceremony. He admired him that much.
So is Jack actually gay coz the girls said she got it off him I'm confused
charlie smith Well, we don't know for sure if he is gay, but if he was..we'd noticed the signs indicating that he was gay this whole time.
