I have only read a few of his novels and I was overwhelmed by them. I never felt the way I did after reading two to three pages. I felt drunk. His prose intoxicated me.
Just beginning to read "American Pastoral" having just discovered Roth. My God, he writes beautifully and insightfully. May just draw me back into reading fiction on a regular basis again.
Same story! I had troubles with reading, habe them till this day but since I've watched "Elegy" with Penelope Cruz and Ben Kingsley based on the book "The dying animal". I've bought the book! I've read the book! I loved it!❤

If he approved of 'The Human Stain' film rendering...........the obvious was before, and law enforcement would have decided good riddance....the Harris character was a stupid sidebar
To write about your Jewishness and Jewish life as well as sex is to be courageous. Yes, Roth was a stand-up comic, emphasis on “stand-up”which means you stand up for who you are. In Roth’s case, he was born and brought up a Jew, a writer and a highly sexual man. His way of standing up for himself was to own it all as he saw it. “Portnoy’s Complaint” is one of the funniest books of all time. You miss it at your peril.
I agree with you, Roth is undeniably brilliant. But Roth's writing has also contributed to the general erosion of gentility, nobility, propriety, and chastity that characterised gentile society pre-WW2. Cultural standards have shifted dramatically partly due to the unprecedented influence of the Hebraic character. Many consider this a 'liberation' and a very good thing. Personally, I have my doubts...
"when a writer is born into a family, the family is finished" loved that quote!
Nice one!)

Saame! Felt in love with his craft and writing

If you have a strong stomach for vulgarity and sexual delinquency, my suggestion would be to next approach Sabbath's Theater.
Christopher, will you ever forget the intricacies of glove-making? The once-respectable boarding house?

Read his later, shorter novels, eg Everyman. It is a masterpiece.
Brilliant doco. Thank you so much!

What a treasure. A clear eyed narrative of an American. A must see for any writer.

You were introduced to his work at the age of five ? I hope you didn't grow up to become a disturbed and fucked up adult.

I'll never discard his NYT obituary. That it started on the front page was his due.
Wonderful to see the beautiful Claire Bloom. So sad things went so wrong for them.
I have enjoyed this piece a great deal.

“You pour the oil on your own head.” True, I love writers, and writing.

Adulterous middle-aged man. Sounds like a fun reading.
Which book? You mean 'fun read'. A fun reading would be an amusing interpretation.
Boring twat on the internet IS dreary for sure. Writer of wonderful fiction? Not so much.
